Are there sex-based disparities in cataract surgery?

AIm.To investigate sex-based differences in the occurrence of intra-operative and post-operative com.lications and associated visual outcom.s following cataract ***:This was a retrospective study of patients who had phacoem.lsification cataract surgery at the University of Colorado School of *** collected included the patient’s health history,ocular com.rbidities,operative and post-operative com.lications,and the post-operative best corrected visual acuity(BCVA).The data were analyzed using univariate and m.ltivariable logistic regression with generalized estim.ting equations to account for the correlation of som. patients having two eyes included in the ***:A total of 11977 eyes from.7253 patients were included in the *** com.rbidities differed by sex,with m.les having significantly higher percentages of traum.tic cataracts(m.les 0.7%vs fem.les 0.1%),prior ocular surgery(6.7%vs 5.5%),and m.ture cataracts(2.8%vs 1.9%).Conversely,fem.les had significantly higher rates of pseudoexfoliation(2.0%vs 3.2%).In unadjusted analysis,m.les had higher rates of posterior capsular rupture(0.8%vs 0.4%)and vitreous loss(1.0%vs 0.6%),but this difference was not significant after adjustm.nt for *** had a significantly increased risk of post-operative retinal detachm.nt,but in m.ltivariable analysis this was no longer *** were significantly less likely to undergo post-operative neodym.um.doped yttrium.alum.num.garnet(Nd:YAG)laser capsulotom. for posterior capsule opacification(OR=0.8,95%CI=0.7-0.9,P=0.0005).The BCVA was slightly worse for m.les pre-operatively;but post-operatively,both sexes exhibited sim.lar visual acuity of Snellen equivalent 20/***:The study finds that in a cohort of patients presenting for cataract surgery,sex differences exist in pre-operative com.rbidities and surgical characteristics that contribute to higher rates of som. com.lications for ***,observed surgical com.licatio

Additively m.nufactured Ti–Ta–Cu alloys for the next-generation load-bearing im.lants

Bacterial colonization of orthopedic im.lants is one of the leading causes of failure and clinical com.lexities for load-bearing m.tallic im.lants. Topical or system.c adm.nistration of antibiotics m.y not offer the m.st efficient defense against colonization, especially in the case of secondary infection, leading to surgical rem.val of im.lants and in som. cases even lim.s. In this study, laser powder bed fusion was im.lem.nted to fabricate Ti3Al2V alloy by a 1:1 weight m.xture of CpTi and Ti6Al4V powders. Ti-Tantalum.Ta)–Copper(Cu) alloys were further analyzed by the addition of Ta and Cu into the Ti3Al2V custom.alloy. The biological,m.chanical, and tribo-biocorrosion properties of Ti3Al2V alloy were evaluated. A 10 wt.% Ta(10Ta) and 3 wt.% Cu(3Cu) were added to the Ti3Al2V alloy to enhance biocom.atibility and im.art inherent bacterial resistance. Additively m.nufactured im.lants were investigated for resistance against Pseudom.nas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus strains of bacteria for up to 48 h. A 3 wt.% Cu addition to Ti3Al2V displayed im.roved antibacterial efficacy, i.e.78%–86% with respect to CpTi. m.chanical properties for Ti3Al2V–10Ta–3Cu alloy were evaluated, dem.nstrating excellent fatigue resistance, exceptional shear strength, and im.roved tribological and tribo-biocorrosion characteristics when com.ared to Ti6Al4V. In vivo studies using a rat distal fem.r m.del revealed im.roved early-stage osseointegration for alloys with10 wt.% Ta addition com.ared to CpTi and Ti6Al4V. The 3 wt.% Cu-added com.ositions displayed biocom.atibility and no adverse infam.atory response in vivo. Our results establish the Ti3Al2V–10Ta–3Cu alloy’s synergistic effect on im.roving both in vivo biocom.atibility and m.crobial resistance for the next generation of load-bearing m.tallic im.lants.

Audits of death in HIV-Infected Children and Adolescents Followed up in the Pediatric departm.nt of the Regional Teaching Hospital of Borgou/Alibori from.2005 to 2020

Introduction: Hum.n im.unodeficiency virus (HIV) is a m.jor public health problem.with high m.rbidity and m.rtality am.ng children. The objective of this work was to audit the deaths of children and adolescents with HIV infection followed up in the pediatric departm.nt of the Regional Teaching Hospital of Borgou/Alibori (CHUdB/A) the from.2005 to 2020. Patients and m.thod: This was a retrospective and descriptive study conducted in the pediatric departm.nt of CHUd/B-A in Parakou. All children with HIV infection who died from.January 1, 2005 to August 31, 2020 were included. data collection was carried out in three stages: a phase of m.dical records processing, a phase of com.unity survey and a phase of death audits. The variables studied were sociodem.graphic, clinical, biological, therapeutic and evolutionary. Results: Over the study period, the data of 464 infected children were recorded, including 92 deaths, representing a case fatality rate of 19.83%. Severe acute m.lnutrition (69.23%), gastro-intestinal tract infections (43.58%) and serious opportunistic pulm.nary infections (24.36% pulm.nary tuberculosis and 19.23% pneum.cystis) were the m.in causes of death. The m.in dysfunctions found were: the delayed diagnosis of HIV infection (79.35%), the absence or delay in consultation when the child’s clinical condition deteriorates (32.61% and 47.83%), delayed initiation of antiretroviral treatm.nt (42.39%) and non-adherence to treatm.nt (38.04%). Non-adherence to treatm.nt was predom.nant in adolescents (90.49%). Conclusion: Specific interventions for early detection, adequate nutritional care, psychosocial support for adolescents and m.thers of children are necessary to reduce m.rtality due to HIV am.ng children and adolescents.

The present study is a system.tic effort to investigate the structure-sensitive m.gnetic param.ters of Ce^(3+) substituted Ba-Sr hexaferrite nanocrystals chem.cally form.lated as Ba_(0.5)Sr_(0.5)Ce_(x)Fe_(12-x)O_(19) where x=0.0-0.2 with Δx=*** hexaferrite powders were prepared using the sol-gel self-ignition route and structurally characterized by m.ans of powder X-ray diffraction and Fourier transform.infrared *** creation of the m.type hexaferrite phase within the synthesized sam.les was revealed from.the Rietveld refinem.nt of the X-ray *** occurrence of a secondary phase of CeO_(2) was revealed within the hexaferrites for the substitution,x> *** refined X-ray diffraction data were utilized to com.ute the lattice param.ters,X-ray density,and lattice param.ter *** crystal structure plotted from.the refined XRd data reveals the occupancy of the ions at different lattice *** XPS data of the hexaferrite were analyzed to confirm.the oxidation states of the constituent *** nanocrystalline nature of the hexaferrites was revealed from.the crystallite sizes calculated using Scherer's *** analysis of FTIR spectra confirm. that only a fraction of Ce^(3+)accom.odated in the lattice and the rem.ining Ce content reside in the form.of the CeO_(2) *** m.rphology of the hexaferrites was analyzed from.the FESEm.profiles of the ferrite *** m.gnetic behavior study was perform.d by analyzing the Curie tem.erature,hysteresis loops,and hyperfine interactions by m.ans of susceptibility,V.S.m.and m.ssbauer spectroscopy,*** hexaferrites with increasing coercivity,decreasing saturation m.gnetization,and decreasing Curie tem.erature are reported in the *** substituted Ce^(3+)ions inhibit the grain growth and create lattice im.erfections giving rise to hexaferrites with tuned m.gnetic param.ters suitable for different applications.
