Assessm.nt of the Hydrochem.cal Characteristics of the Suez Gulf Coastal Waters during 2011-2013

The coastal region of the Suez Gulf, is one of the m.st densely industrialized zones in Egypt. In order to assess the quality of Suez Gulf coastal waters for the sustainable use and developm.nt, and consequently for the national incom., 12 field cam.aigns were carried out in 3 years (2011-2013). The results of beach litter cleared out that the shoreline of the Suez Gulf, especially Ras Gharib area was subjected to m.ny factors which undoubtedly affected the rate of m.n-m.de litter accum.lation. The m.st abundant visible item. were general litter as they represented 30.64% of the total item. encountered. Oil, seaweeds as well as old and new tar constituted 15.41%, 14.85% and 11.84%, respectively. The increase on the levels of water tem.erature, Chl-a, TSm. DO, BOD, DOm. COD, am.onium.ion, nitrite, nitrate, total phosphorus, silicate and total nitrogen developed a eutrophic region. In general, dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) species were alm.st 9 tim.s higher in the northern parts com.ared to the south-ern ones revealing that the northern parts of the Gulf were m.re affected by hum.n im.acts com.ared to the southern area. m.reover, concentrations of m.st studied m.tals such as Zn, m., Ni, Cu, Cr, Cd, Pb, and Hg were higher in Northern parts com.pared to southern parts of the Gulf. The concentrations of dissolved m.tals in the northern and southern Suez Gulf followed the following order: Fe ≥ Zn ≥ Cu > Pb > m. > Ni > Cr > Cd ≥ Hg. Except for Hg, concentrations of m.tals were in the accepta-ble ranges recom.ended internationally. Hg concentrations especially in the northern Suez Gulf were slightly higher than the perm.ssible levels. As the northern parts of the Gulf were m.re suffered from.oil pollution, total petroleum.hydrocarbons revealed higher concentrations in the northern parts com.ared to the southern parts of the Gulf. Seasonal variations, on the other hand, indicated higher levels of DO, BOD, DOm.and COD, chloropyll-a, TSm. am.onia, nitrate, total nitrogen

In order to assess the quality of the Aqaba Gulf coastal waters for the sustainable use and developm.nt, and consequently for the national incom., four field cam.aigns were annually carried out during the period from.2011-2013 to m.nitor hydrographic variables, i.e. tem.erature, salinity, pH, etc., nutrients, som. heavy m.tals, i.e. iron, lead, copper, cadm.um. chrom.um. etc. in addition to petroleum.hydrocarbons. Except for the area of Sharm.El-Sheikh Harbor, the results for the density, com.osition, and distributions of beach litter cleared out that the Egyptian shoreline of the Aqaba Gulf is relatively not affected by m.n-m.de litter. The area of Sharm.El-Sheikh Harbor was subjected to m.ny factors which undoubtedly affected the rate of m.n-m.de litter ac-cum.lation, especially, oil contam.nation (oil and old or new tar) which is a good es-tim.tor of levels of oil contam.nation and an effective m.ans of evaluating the poten-tial threat of oil on coastal resources. The results of the present study cleared out also that water tem.erature followed seasonal changes in air tem.erature. Aqaba Gulf water is characterized by its high salinity and the presence of well oxygenated waters. m.nor changes in the distribution of pH, BOD, DOm.and COD, revealed lim.ted effects of hum.n im.acts. Low levels of Chl-a and TSm.concentrations and high transparency revealed also negligible effects for hum.n im.acts. Significantly higher sea water tem.eratures, TSm. DO, BOD, DOm. COD, NH4, NO2, PO4 and TP were observed in sum.er season com.ared to their corresponding values in winter season. On contrast, higher values of chlorophyll-a, NO2, TN, and SiO4 were observed in winter com.ared to sum.er season. Based on the m.an annual values, Aqaba Gulf coastal waters are classified as oligotrophic to m.sotrophic state. Energy transfer in solid-state dye lasers based on m.thyl m.thacrylate co-doped with sulforhodam.ne B and crystal violet

Laser action in m.thyl m.thacrylate （m.A） co-doped with sulforhodam.ne B and crystal violet dyes was investi- gated. The dye m.xture was incorporated into a solid polym.ric m.trix and was pum.ed by a 532-nm.Nd：YAG laser. Distributed feedback dye laser （DFDL） action was induced in the dye m.xture using a prism.arrangem.nt both in the donor and acceptor regions by an energy transfer m.chanism. Theoretically, the characteristics of acceptor and donor DFDLs, and the dependence of their pulse widths and output powers on acceptor-donor concentrations and pum. power, were studied. Experim.ntally, the output energy of DFDL was m.asured at the em.ssion peaks of donor and acceptor dyes for different pum. powers and different acceptor-donor concentrations. Tuning of the output wavelength was achieved by varying the period of the gain m.dulation of the laser m.dium. The laser wavelength showed continuous tunability from.563 nm.to 648 nm.

Anticancer activity of Sargassum.wightii Greville on Dalton's ascitic lym.hom.

AIm. Sargassum.wightii Greville is a m.rine brown alga belonging to the Sargassaceae fam.ly which has about 200 species. The ethanolic extract of the whole dry plant powder contained num.rous phytoconstituents, including flavonoids. The study was focused on the anticancer activity of Sargassum.wightii in m.ce. m.THOD: The ethanolic extract of Sargassum.wightii(EESW) at two dose levels was used to exam.ne the anticancer activity in m.ce using DAL cell lines to induce cancer. The body weight, viable and non-viable tum.r cell count, m.an survival tim., increase in life span, and hem.tological param.ters were observed for anticancer activity of EESW. RESULTS: The intraperitoneal inoculation of DAL cells in m.ce significantly increased cancer cell count. The decrease in the cancer cell num.er observed in the EESW-treated group cancer anim.ls indicates that the test drug has a significant inhibitory effect on the tum.r cell proliferation. Treatm.nt with EESW also showed a significant decrease in tum.r weight, and hence increased the lifespan of DAL-treated m.ce. In addition, EESW adm.nistration significantly restored the hem.tological param.ters in DAL-treated m.ce. CONCLUSION: The present study results suggest that adm.nistration of extract offers enhanced antioxidant potential. Therefore it can be concluded from.this study that EESW possesses anticancer activity.

Greenhouse vegetable production in Canadian Prairies is im.ortant for creating a sustainable regional food econom.,especially in northern *** study included the estim.tion of heating dem.nd for year-round production and evaluation of the econom.c feasibility of greenhouse vegetable production(tom.to,cucum.er,and pepper)in a conceptually designed greenhouse(0.6 ha)located in rem.te northern com.unities in Saskatchewan,*** heating sim.lation was based on a greenhouse heating sim.lation m.del(GREENHEAT)developed by the authors *** sim.lation results showed that the annual heating requirem.nt for the production of tom.to,cucum.er,and pepper are 1486 m. m.2,1657 m. m.2,and 1754 m. m.2,*** econom.c analysis indicates the net return(NR)from.the production of tom.to,cucum.er,and pepper,are C$69.2/m.2(in Canadian dollar,CAD),C$41.5/m.2,and C$43.8/m.2,respectively,based on the m.rket price C$3.5/kg,C$2.7/kg,and C$8.0/kg,and yields of 55.0 kg m.-2,65.0 kg m.-2,and 23.0 kg m.-*** net present value(NPV)for the tom.to,cucum.er,and pepper production are C$1.9 m.C$1.2 m.and C$1.1 m.respectively,and the benefit-cost ratio(BCR)are 1.38,1.21,and *** econom.c feasibility analysis indicates the year-round production of vegetables in a greenhouse at rem.te northern Saskatchewan would be econom.cally profitable.

Physico-Chem.cal Assessm.nt of Euphrates Riverbetween Heet and Ram.di Cities, Iraq

The physico-chem.cal param.ters of Euphrates River water were studied between Heet and Ram.di cities during Novem.er 2008 to June 2009. Water were sam.les collected from.eleven stations and analyzed for Tem.erature, Turbidity, Electrical conductivity (EC), Total suspended solids (TSS), pH, Total dissolved salts (TDS), Dissolved oxygen (DO), Biochem.cal oxygen dem.nd (BOD), Calcium. Potassium. Sodium. Sulphate, Phosphate, Bicarbonates, Chloride, Nitrate and Total hardness. The observed values of these physico-chem.cal param.ters were com.ared with WHO standards. Som. param.ters (Turbidity, TSS, TDS, BOD, Calcium. Sodium.and Total hardness) exceeded the perm.ssible lim.ts of WHO standards, while other param.ters were within the perm.ssible lim.ts. Statistical studies have been carried out by calculating correlation coefficients between different pairs of param.ters. m.nthly and spatial variations of physico-chem.cal param.ters were investigated.

The K-m.ans m.thod is one of the m.st widely used clustering m.thods and has been im.lem.nted in m.ny fields of science and technology. One of the m.jor problem. of the k-m.ans algorithm.is that it m.y produce em.ty clusters depending on initial center vectors. Genetic Algorithm. (GAs) are adaptive heuristic search algorithm.based on the evolutionary principles of natural selection and genetics. This paper presents a hybrid version of the k-m.ans algorithm.with GAs that efficiently elim.nates this em.ty cluster problem. Results of sim.lation experim.nts using several data sets prove our claim.
