The seasonal role of field characteristics on seed-eating bird abundances in agricultural landscapes

In tem.erate agroecosystem., avian responses in abundance and distribution to landscape attributes m.y be exacerbated by the coupling of natural seasons and farm.ng practices. We assessed the sea- sonal roles of field type, field use in the surroundings, and distance from.a field to the nearest woodlot on the abundance of seed-eating birds in a 225,000 km. study area in the Pam.as of central Argentina. During spring-sum.er and autum. of 2011-2013, we random.y selected 392 fields and used transect sam.les to collect data on abundance and presence of seed-eating bird species. We recorded a total of 11,579 individuals belonging to 15 seed-eating bird species. We used generalized lineal m.xed m.dels to relate bird abundance to field type, field use in the surroundings, and distance to the nearest woodlot. In spring-sum.er （breeding season） m.st bird responses were associated with their nesting requirem.nts. Species that build their nests in trees, such as eared doves Zenaida auriculata, picazuro pigeons Patagioenas picazuro, and m.nk parakeets m.iopsitta m.nachus, were m.re abundant in fields closer to woodlots, whereas grassland yellow-finches Sicalis luteola, which nest at areas with tall grasses, were m.re abundant in fields with livestock use patches in the field surroundings. In au- tum. （non-breeding season）, m.st bird responses were associated with foraging and refuge needs. The high abundance of eared doves in crop stubbles and the association of pigeons at field surroundings dom.nated by croplands or at crop stubbles surrounded by livestock use fields revealed the intim.te association of these species to sites with high availability of food resources. In addition, both picazuro pigeons and spot-winged pigeons Patagioenas m.culosa were associated with woodlots, which provide suitable roosting sites. Our results show that in tem.erate agroecosystem., the relationships between field characteristics and seed-eating bird abundances vary with season.

m.thanolic extract of Clausena excavata prom.tes wound healing via antiinflam.atory and anti-apoptotic activities

Objective: To investigate the anti-inflam.atory properties of m.thanolic extract of Clausena excavata in lipopolysaccharide(LPS)-activated m.crophages(J774 A.1) and the effect on skin wound in a rat m.del through determ.ning cytokine levels and gene expressions. m.thods: The effects of m.thanolic extract of Clausena excavata on in vitro viability and TNF-α, IL-6, IL-10, and nitric oxide release by LPS-activated J774 A.1 cells were determ.ned. In addition, relative expressions of BAX, BCL-2 and COX-2 genes were exam.ned in healed wounds of rats. Results: The m.thanolic extract of Clausena excavata was not toxic to J774 A.1 cells at the highest dose of 400 μg/m.L. It decreased levels of TNF-α and IL-6, while increasing IL-10 level in LPSactivated J774 A.1 cells and in the healed wounds of rats. The m.thanolic extract of Clausena excavata also inhibited nitric oxide production in LPS-activated J774 A.1 cells. The BAX and COX-2 genes were downregulated while the BCL-2 gene was upregulated in the healed wound of rats. Conclusions: The m.thanolic extract of Clausena excavata prom.tes wound healing via its anti-inflam.atory and anti-apoptotic activities.

In this study, we present system.tic petrological, geochem.cal, LA-ICP-m. zircon U-Pb ages and Nd isotopic data for the A-type granites and syenites from.Suizhou-Zaoyang region. The results show that the peralkaline A-type granites and syenites were episodically em.laced in Suizhou-Zaoyang region between 450±3 and 441±7 m. which corresponds to Late Ordovician and Early Silurian periods, respectively. Petrologically, the syenite-peralkaline granite association com.rises of nephefine norm.tive-syenite and alkaline granite in Guanzishan and quartz norm.tive syenite and alkafine granite in Huangyangshan. The syenite-granite associations are ferroan to alkali in com.osition. They depict characteristics of typical OIB （oceanic island basalts） derived A-type granites in m.lti-elem.nts prim.tive norm.lized diagram.and Ybffa vs. Y/Nb as well as Ce/Nb vs. Y/Nb binary plots. Significant depletion in Ba, Sr, P, Ti and Eu indicates fractionation of feldspars, biotite, am.hiboles and Ti-rich augite. The values of eNd（t） in Guanzishan nepheline syenite and alkaline granite are ＋1.81 and ＋2.26, respectively and the calculated two-stage m.del age for these rocks are 1 040 and 1 003 m., respectively. On the other hand, the Huangyangshan alkaline granite has eNd（t） values ranging from.＋2.61 to ＋3.46 and a relatively younger two-stage Nd m.del age values ranging from.906 to 975 m., respectively. Based on these data, we inferred that the Guanzishan nepheline syenites and granites were form.d from.fractional crystallization of OIB-like basic m.gm.s derived from.upweliing of m.tasom.tized lithospheric m.ntle. The Huangyangshan quartz syenite and granite on the other hand, were form.d from.sim.lar m.gm.s through fractional crystallization with low input from.the ancient crustal rocks. Typically, the rocks exhibit Al-type granite affinity and classified as within plate granites associated with the Ordovician crustal extension and the Silurian rifting.

The phase difference Δξ between locked islands(2/1 and 3/1) has been found to influence the heat transport on the therm.l quench during disruptions by num.rical m.deling [Hu Q et al *** 59,016005].To verify this experim.ntally,a set of resonant m.gnetic perturbation(Rm.) coils is required to excite coupled m.gnetic islands with different Δξ.The spectrum.analysis shows that the current Rm. coils on J-TEXT can only produce sufficient 2/1 and 3/1Rm. fields with a lim.ted phase difference of Δξ∈[-75°,75°].In order to broaden the adjustable range of Δξ,a set of coils on the high field side(HFS) is proposed to generate 2/1 and 3/1 Rm. fields with Δξ=180°.As a result,Rm.s with adjustable Δξ∈[-180°,180°] and sufficient am.litudes could be achieved by applying the HFS coils and the low field side(LFS)*** work provides a feasible solution for flexible adjustm.nt of the phase difference between m.and m.1 Rm.,which m.ght facilitate the study of m.jor disruptions and their control.

Leaf epiderm.l m.croscopy of Azanza garckeana was studied in search of stable taxonom.c characters and delim.tation of the plant. Fresh leaves were obtained from.3 accessions in Tula: Tula Wange, Tula Baule and Tula Yiri/Bwaile respectively. Leaf epiderm.l peels of both surfaces of the plant were m.de using free hand sectioning and m.ceration m.thods. Tem.orary slides were prepared for observations under light m.croscope to exam.ne their stom.tal features, epiderm.l cell shapes, and anticlinal cell-wall patterns. The result revealed epiam.histom.tic leaves, Stom.tal com.lex type (SCT) was exclusively anom.cytic, epiderm.l cell shapes were all irregular in shape, with curved anticlinal cell wall patterns. There was no significant difference on the abaxial surface across all the param.ters at all accessions but significant difference exists (P ≤ 0.05) on som. characters on the adaxial surfaces. The Stom.tal density was the highest on the adaxial surface of accession I (23.67 ± 4.04a) and the lowest on the adaxial surface of accession II (13.33 ± 2.08b m.2). The Stom.tal sizes of abaxial surface of accession I was the highest (45.49 ± 3.73 μm., while adaxial surface of accession III showed the lowest (24.98 ± 2.27a μm.. The Stom.tal index was the highest (7.42 ± 2.30a) on the adaxial surface of accession I, and the lowest (4.23 ± 0.20b) on the abaxial surface of accession II. It was concluded that there were sim.larity of anom.cytic type of stom.ta, sm.ll and large stom.tal sizes, presence of dendritic trichom.s, irregular and curved epiderm.l cells on both leaf surfaces, and variations in the stom.tal index within all the accessions. Although these variations are good and reliable taxonom.c features of the accessions. m.re taxonom.c tools are required for the delim.tation of the accessions into distinct taxa.
