Ego strength and health: An empiric study in hemodialysis patients

Introduction: Ego strength represents an important variable that could be predictable about health and compliance in chronic diseases. In this study we propose a new questionnaire, E.F.E. “Ego Functioning Experience”, able to reveal the psychological functioning profile in Hemodialysis patients. The aim of this work, is to underline the existing relations between emotional profile and compliance, whit E.F.E., that may be predictive of a state of psychologycal health in hemodialysis patients. Methods: Study population included 90 hemodialysis patients. The study protocol was made by three psychological tests: the E.F.E. Questionnaire, the DMI, the Self-Liking and Self-Competence Scale. Results: Factor analysis extracts three factors: 1) “Need of Ego support”;2) “Ego activity oriented to treatment”;3) “Ego strength”. The correlation coefficients between the E.F.E. Questionnaire factors (three factors) and other measures, showed a direct correlation with the first factor and “turning against object” TAO of the DMI test (correlation is significant at the 0.001 level) and an inverse relation with set mechanisms of “Principalization”, PRN of the DMI (correlation is significant at the 0.005 level). The correlations of the second and the third factors with other measures, were not statistically significant. No relations were found about other variables. Conclusions: The E.F.E. questionnaire is a simple evaluation to detect hemo-dialysis patients who may need greater attention to the psychological health and therefore the need for treatment such as psychological support. In fact, lower presence of ego strength is indicative of poor compliance to clinical treatment in hemodialysis, but also of worsening of psychiatric symptoms such as demoralization and depressed mood. In conclusion, an increased social support is needed in hemodialysis patient in order to achieve better compliance and achieve a better state of psychological health in chronic hemodialysis patients.

Innovative Services for Electric Mobility Based on Virtual Sensors and Petri Nets

About 60%of emissions into the earth’s atmosphere are produced by the transport sector,caused by exhaust gases from conventional internal combustion *** effective solution to this problem is electric mobility,which significantly reduces the rate of urban *** use of electric vehicles(EVs)has to be encouraged and facilitated by new information and communication technology(ICT)*** help achieve this goal,this paper proposes innovative services for electric vehicle users aimed at improving travel and charging *** goal is to provide a smart service to allow drivers to find the most appropriate charging solutions during a trip based on information such as the vehicle’s current position,battery type,state of charge,nearby charge point availability,and *** particular,the drivers are supported so that they can find and book the preferred charge option according to time availability and the final cost of the charge points(CPs).To this purpose,two virtual sensors(VSs)are designed,modeled and simulated in order to provide the users with an innovative service for smart CP searching and *** particular,the first VS is devoted to locate and find available CPs in a preferred area,whereas the second VS calculates the charging cost for the EV and supports the driver in the booking phase.A UML activity diagram describes VSs operations and cooperation,while a UML sequence diagram highlights data exchange between the VSs and other electromobility ecosystem actors(CP operator,EV manufacturer,etc.).Furthermore,two timed Petri Nets(TPNs)are designed to model the proposed VSs,functioning and interactions as discrete event *** Petri Nets are synchronized by a single larger TPN that is simulated in different use cases and scenarios to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed VSs.

Maximizing Convergence Speed for Second Order Consensus in Leaderless Multi-Agent Systems

The paper deals with the consensus problem in a leaderless network of agents that have to reach a common velocity while forming a uniformly spaced ***,the final common velocity(reference velocity)is determined by the agents in a distributed and leaderless ***,the consensus protocol parameters are optimized for networks characterized by a communication topology described by a class of directed graphs having a directed spanning tree,in order to maximize the convergence rate and avoid *** advantages of the optimized consensus protocol are enlightened by some simulation results and comparison with a protocol proposed in the related *** presented protocol can be applied to coordinate agents such as mobile robots,automated guided vehicles(AGVs)and autonomous vehicles that have to move with the same velocity and a common inter-space gap.

Downwash modelling for three-lifting-surface aircraft configuration design

This paper introduces a semi-empirical model to predict the downwash gradient at the horizontal tail of a three-lifting-surface *** superposition principle applied to well established formulations valid for two lifting surfaces is not a reasonable approach to calculate the downwash of a canard-wing-tail layout,and this paper demonstrates that such a basic technique leads to incorrect ***,an ad hoc prediction model is proposed that considers the combined nonlinear effects of canard and main wing inductions on tail downwash,being based on a full factorial design sweep of CFD simulations obtained by varying the main geometrical parameters of the three lifting surfaces.A suitable analytical formula for the downwash gradient is established through a process of data analysis and factor *** presented model extends the validity of the available models for traditional two-lifting-surface designs by means of a correction *** engineering estimation method introduced here exhibits an acceptable accuracy,as well as relatively small prediction errors,and it is suitable for conceptual and preliminary studies of threesurface *** value of this methodology is confirmed by the validation with the results of numerical and experimental investigations on a case study aircraft.

Morphodynamics and sediment connectivity index in an unmanaged,debris-flow prone catchment:a through time perspective

Torrential processes are among the main actors responsible for sediment production and mobility in mountain *** this reason,the understanding of preferential pathways for sediment routing has become a priority in hazard assessment and *** this context,the sediment Connectivity Index(IC)enables to analyse the existing linkage between sediment sources and the selected target(channel network or catchment outlet).The IC is a grid-based index that allows fast computation of sediment connectivity based on landscape information derived from a single Digital Terrain Model(DTM).The index computation is based on the log-ratio between an upslope and a downslope component,including information about drainage area,slope,terrain roughness,and distance to the analysis target(***).The output is a map that highlights the degree of structural connectivity of sediment pathways over analysed *** now,these maps are however rarely used to help defining debris-flow hazard maps,notably due to a lack of guidelines to interpret the IC spatial *** paper proposes an exploitation procedure along profiles to extract more information from the analysis of mapped IC *** methodology relies on the analysis of the IC and its component variables along the main channel profile,integrated with information about sediment budgeting derived from Difference of DEMs(DoD).The study of connectivity was applied in the unmanaged sub-catchment(without torrent control works)of the Rio Soial(Autonomous Province of Trento–NE Italy)to understanding the geomorphic evolution of the area after five debris flows(in ten years)and the related changes of sediment *** a recent DTM as validation,we demonstrated how an IC analysis over the older DTM can help predicting geomorphic changes and associated *** results show an IC aptitude to capture geomorphic trajectories,anticipate debris flow deposits in a specific channel location,and depict pre

Topography, exhumation, and drainage network evolution of the Apennines

The present-day topography of the Italian peninsula results from the interactions between crustal-mantle and surface processes occurring since the Late Miocene. Analysis of exhumation and cooling of crustal rocks, together with Quaternary drainage evolution,helps to unravel the tectonic-morphologic evolution of the Apennines by distinguishing end-member models,and hence describing the orogenic belt evolution. The pattern of regional topography, erosional history and present-day distribution of active deformation suggests that the eastward migrating extensional-compressional paired deformation belts may still control the topogra-phy of the northern Apennines, albeit at slower rates than in the past. Conversely, Quaternary drainage evo-lution in the central and southern Apennines suggests that the topography of these regions underwent a Quaternary regional arching, which is only partly con-sistent with the persisting migration of the compres-sional-extensional pair.

On the criteria to create a susceptibility map to debris flow at a regional scale using Flow-R

Studies on susceptibility to debris flows at regional scale （ioo-looo km2） are important for the protection and management of mountain areas. To reach this objective, routing models, mainly based on land topography, can be used to predict susceptible areas rapidly while necessitating few input data. In this research, Flow-R model is implemented to create the susceptibility map for the debris flow of the Vizze Valley （BZ, North-Eastern Italy; 134 km^2）. The analysis considers the model application at local scale for three sub-catchments and then it explores the model upsealing at the regional scale by verifying two methods to generate the source areas of debris-flow initiation. Using data of an extreme event occurred in the Vizze Valley （4 August 2012） and historical information, the modeling verification highlights that the propagation parameters are relatively simple to set in order to obtain correct runout distances. A double DTM filtering - using a threshold for the upslope contributing area （0.1 km^2） and a threshold for the terrain-slope angle （15°） provides a satisfactory prediction of source areas and susceptibility map within the geological conditions of the Vizze Valley.

Driving style,traffic and weather conditions have a significant impact on vehicle fuel consumption and in particular,the road freight traffic significantly contributes to the CO2 increase in *** paper proposes an Eco-Route Planner devoted to determine and communicate to the drivers of Heavy-Duty Vehicles(HDVs)the eco-route that guarantees the minimum fuel consumption by respecting the travel time established by the freight *** proposed eco-route is the optimal route from origin to destination and includes the optimized speed and gear *** this aim,the Cloud Computing System architecture is composed of two main components:the Data Management System that collects,fuses and integrates the raw external sources data and the Cloud Optimizer that builds the route network,selects the eco-route and determines the optimal speed and gear ***,a real case study is discussed by showing the benefit of the proposed Eco-Route planner.

NMR relaxation analysis provides a unique and non-invasive probe of fluid dynamics within porous materials,and may be applied to the interpretation of a wide variety of material and interfacial ***,we report two-dimensional^(1)H T_(1)-T_(2)relaxation correlation measurements of a range of three-carbon adsorbates(1-propanol,2-propanol and propanoic acid)imbibed within the mesoporous metal oxide *** data,acquired across field strengths of 2 MHz,12.7 MHz and 43 MHz,clearly reveal two populations in each measurement,identified as the alkyl and hydroxyl moieties of each *** results expand the range of materials in which such functional group resolved relaxation is known to occur,and demonstrate the clear persistence of such phenomena using a range of typical benchtop NMR systems employed to study fluid-saturated porous media.
