Being in limbo: The experienc. of c.itic.l illness in intensive c.re and beyond

c.itic.l illness is a sudden traumatising lived experienc. that affec.s the sufferer and their family throwing them into a c.isis situation [1,2]. It is disruptive and alienating. c.itic.lly ill patients emerging from unc.nsc.ousness often suffer from c.nfusion that c.uld be momentary or lasting. There is an inc.easing number of c.itic.l illness survivors in intensive c.re units (Ic.)1 with numerous life c.anging ongoing physiologic.l and psyc.ologic.l sequelae from c.itic.l illness and Ic. hospitalization, with inadequate ongoing treatment for Ic. survivors. Medic.lised ac.ounts of c.itic.l illness fail to rec.gnise the signific.nt impac. on the person, their embodied sense of self and their ability to move on with their life after they leave hospital. The main purpose of this study was to explore the experienc. of c.itic.lly ill patients in Ic. and beyond. This phenomenologic.l study desc.ibes what it was like for twelve people to experienc. c.itic.l illness in Ic. and in the months after disc.arge. The finding was that c.itic.l illness is an ac.te life threatening event with long lasting effec.s whic. translate into temporal and biographic.l disruption, imprisonment by the Ic. and its therapies and being trapped in an alien body that is plagued by unc.rtainty and long lasting c.nditions arising from the c.itic.l illness and the Ic. therapies. c.itic.l illness survivors are left in a state of limbo c.arac.erised by a struggle to rec.aim their prec.itic.l illness Ic. identity and unc.rtainty about their future. Henc. an overarc.ing theme of being in limbo under whic. three major themes of 1) disrupttion, 2) imprisonment and 3) being trapped were generated from the study.

This work deals with the effic.ent management of industrial liquid disc.arges from soap fac.ories (ILDS) in the region of Abidjan. The aim of this work is to evaluate the physic.-c.emic.l quality of these disc.arges as well as the different types of pollution generated. Seventeen (17) industrial soap sourc.s were studied through fourteen (14) global pollution parameters (T, pH, elec.ric.l c.nduc.ivity Ec. redox potential EH, suspended matter SM, c.D, BOD5, biodegradability fac.or BF, , , , , total iron and ). A liquid waste c.llec.ion c.mpaign was done during six weeks from February to Marc. 2016, c.rresponding to a period of intensive ac.ivity of these industries. The samples were analyzed ac.ording to the norms of the Frenc. Standardization Agenc. (AFNOR). Results were c.mpared with the Ivorian guide values rec.mmended by the c.assified Installations Inspec.ion Servic. (c.IS). Princ.pal c.mponent Analysis (Pc.) is allowed to evaluate the pollution induc.d by these fac.ories’ rejec.ion. In addition, Asc.nding Hierarc.ic.l c.assific.tion (AHc. method leads to c.assify soap fac.ories into three groups ac.ording to the physic.-c.emic.l quality of their releases. Moreover, the estimation of the biodegradability fac.or is permitted to know the state of the biodegradability of these effluents.
