Amylolytic Activity in Selected Sweetpotato(Ipomoea batatas Lam)Varieties during Development and in Storage

Sweetpotato varieties (five) were investigated for changes in α- and β-amylase activities during root development and on subjection of harvested roots to different postharvest handling and storage conditions. Changes in α- and β-amylase activities in development were monitored from 10 weeks after planting. At physiological maturity, sweetpotato roots were harvested and subjected to various conditions: freshly harvested roots and cured roots (spread under the sun for four days at 29℃ - 31℃ and 63% - 65% relative humidity), stored at ambient conditions (23℃ - 26℃ and 70% - 80% relative humidity) and in a semi-underground pit (19℃ - 21℃ and 90% - 95% relative humidity). Generally α- and β-amylase activities increased during development with NASPOT 9 and 10 consistently registering the highest activities and NASPOT 1 the lowest activity. Generally, maximum α-amylase activities were achieved at week 3 in ambient stores for NASPOT 9 and NASPOT 10 at 0.930 and 0.897 CU/g, respectively. Maximum β-amylase activity was achieved in ambient stores at week 3 and 4 for fresh and cured NASPOT 9 at 806 and 782 BU/g, respectively. Generally, curing and storing sweetpotatoes in ambient conditions registered the highest amylase activity. Maximum α- and β-amylase activities were registered at 67℃ - 68℃ and 58℃ - 60℃, respectively. These findings provide information for controlled modification of amylase activities of these sweetpotato varieties for product development efforts and monitoring the shelf life of the roots during storage.

Value-added Impact of Geostationary Hyperspectral Infrared Sounders on Local Severe Storm Forecasts——via a Quick Regional OSSE

Accurate atmospheric temperature and moisture information with high temporal/spatial resolutions are two of the key parameters needed in regional numerical weather prediction(NWP) models to reliably predict high-impact weather events such as local severe storms(LSSs). High spectral resolution or hyperspectral infrared(HIR) sounders from geostationary orbit(GEO) provide an unprecedented source of near time-continuous, three-dimensional information on the dynamic and thermodynamic atmospheric fields—an important benefit for nowcasting and NWP-based forecasting. In order to demonstrate the value of GEO HIR sounder radiances on LSS forecasts, a quick regional OSSE(Observing System Simulation Experiment)framework has been developed, including high-resolution nature run generation, synthetic observation simulation and validation, and impact study on LSS forecasts. Results show that, on top of the existing LEO(low earth orbit) sounders, a GEO HIR sounder may provide value-added impact [a reduction of 3.56% in normalized root-mean-square difference(RMSD)] on LSS forecasts due to large spatial coverage and high temporal resolution, even though the data are assimilated every 6 h with a thinning of 60 km. Additionally, more frequent assimilations and smaller thinning distances allow more observations to be assimilated, and may further increase the positive impact from a GEO HIR sounder. On the other hand, with denser and more frequent observations assimilated, it becomes more difficult to handle the spatial error correlation in observations and gravity waves due to the limitations of current assimilation and forecast systems(such as a static background error covariance). The peak reduction of 4.6% in normalized RMSD is found when observations are assimilated every 3 h with a thinning distance of 30 km.

The Influence of the Solar Radiation Absorptivity up on the Outdoor Thermal Environment Evaluation Index and the Thermal Sensory Perceptions

When the thermal environment is under heated conditions, short-wavelength solar radiation shows a strong influence on the human body and the heat is accumulated in the human body. In order to demonstrate the effect of the short-wavelength solar radiation absorptivity of clothing on physiological temperature in an outdoor space, the relationship between the thermal environment evaluation index, ETFe, and the thermal sensory perceptions of the human body was investigated. A significant temperature difference of 2.7°C was shown for an ETFe that was thermally neutral (neither hot nor cold). The effect of short-wavelength solar radiation absorptivity was strongly apparent in ETFe when direct solar radiation was strong and in warmer outdoor spaces. In an outdoor space where the effect of the sky factor and albedo was strong, the setting of the short-wavelength solar radiation absorptivity was demonstrated to greatly impact the estimation of perceived and physiological temperature. When interviewing subjects on clothing in an outdoor space, it is essential to obtain the hue of clothing.

Neurological involvement in Behcet＇s disease （BD）, namely, neuro-Behcet＇s disease （NBD）, causes devastating central ner- vous system （CNS） complications and is present in 5% to 30% of patients with BD.1 Immunological and molecular pathways are involved in NBD and include the release ofinterleukin （IL）- 1, -6 and -8, and TNF-α and IFN-γ into cerebrospinal fluid （CSF）,2 which reflects a nonspecific inflammatory pattern that is comnatihle with anta-inflammatnry disease pathways.

Use of Wavelet Transform to Analyse Observed Precipitation at Bukoba, Tanzania to Recognize Impacts to Hydrological Response in Lake Victoria Basin

This research exploited seventy years of daily precipitation data from Bukoba, Tanzania to understand precipitation variability and change important for water resource management. Morlet Wavelet Transform was applied to discriminate the distinct time-frequency rainfall variability in the 92 days long MAM （（March and May）） and OND （October to December） primary rainfall seasons for intraseasonal characteristics over the periods 1931 - 1960, 1961-1990 and 1971-2000. The time-frequency analysis yielded wavelets outlining the intraseasonal nature of sporadic wet and dry spells in each epoch. The characters of the spells designate changing distribution, intensity and frequency of occurrence across the three epochs. The profile of the erratic wet and dry spells speculates shift change and fading of high frequency, quasi biweekly and low frequency oscillations. The oscillations which act together across atmosphere, oceans and land surfaces through convective processes are likely to influence seasonal precipitation anomalies at intraseasonal scale. The variability of the observed daily precipitation is thus hypothesized to be linked to the fading oscillations in the later two epochs particularly during the main MAM season and thus the declining precipitation in the study domain. Global increased atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration could catalyze this process.
