Spatiotemporal optical properties of dissolved organic matter in a sluice-controlled coastal plain river with both salinity and trophic gradients

Due to the combined effect of sluices and sea tide,the sluice-controlled coastal plain river would be characterized by both trophic state and salinity gradients,affecting the spatiotemporal optical properties of dissolved organicmatter(DOM).In this study,we investigated the spatiotemporal variation of water quality parameters and optical properties of DOM in the Haihe River,a representative sluice-controlled coastal plain river in Tianjin,China.A significant salinity gradient and four trophic states were observed in the water body of the Haihe *** humic-and one protein-like substances were identified from the DOM by the three-dimensional fluorescence spectra combined with the parallel factor(PARAFAC)***’s correlation analysis and redundancy analysis(RDA)showed that the salinity significantly affected the abundance of chromophoric DOM(CDOM)but did not cause significant changes in the fluorescence optical *** addition,the effect of Trophic state index(TSI)on the CDOM abundance was greater than that on the fluorescence intensity of fluorescent dissolved organic matter(FDOM).In the water body with both salinity and trophic state gradients,TSI posed a greater influence than salinity on the CDOM *** results fill the research gap in spatiotemporal DOM characteristics and water quality variation in water bodies with both salinity and trophic state *** results are beneficial for clarifying the joint influence of saline intrusion and sluices on the DOM characteristics and water quality in sluice-controlled coastal plain rivers.

Electromagnetic shielding effectiveness of amorphous metallic spheroidal-and flake-based magnetodielectric composites

Flexible,lightweight,conductive materials,having both high rf losses and high permeability,are extremely desirable for applications as electromagnetic(EM)*** atomized spherical FeSi-based ferromagnetic metallic particles,having a mean diameter of 14.6μm with a standard deviation of 7.3μm,were measured to have a room temperature saturation magnetic flux density of 1.49 T with a coercivity of 160 A/*** milling of the amorphous particles led to aspect ratios from 1:1(spherical)to>100:1(flake-like).Flake-like particles,suspended in paraffin,were found to not only increase the surface area of fillers enhancing the polarization mechanism but also increase the complex permeability and complex permittivity,and thus provide broadband shielding effectiveness.A loading factor of 40 vol.%of the∼15μm diameter powders provided the largestΔW_(RL=-20 dB)of 9.49 gHz(i.e.,6.55gHz)at a coating thickness of 2 ***,powder composites show a wide absorption potential above 18 gHz forg EM wave absorption with an SE of-40 dB and SEgHz at 40 vol.%filler at a thickness of 1.6 mm.

Partial oxidation of methane over SiO2 supported Ni and NiCe catalysts

Nickel and nickel-ceria catalysts supported on high surface area silica, with 6 wt% Ni and 20 wt% CeO2 were prepared by microwave assisted(co) precipitation method. The catalysts were investigated by XRD,TPR and XPS analyses and they were tested in partial oxidation of methane(CPO). The catalytic reaction was carried out at atmospheric pressure in a temperature range of 400–800℃ with a feed gas mixture containing methane and oxygen in a molecular ratio CH4/O2=2. The Ni catalyst exhibited 60% methane conversion with 60% selectivity to CO already at 500℃. On the contrary, the Ni–Ce catalyst was inert to CPO up to 700℃. Moreover, the former catalyst reproduced its activity at the descending temperatures maintaining a good stability at 600℃, over a reaction time of 80 h, whereas the latter one completely deactivated. Test of CH4 temperature programmed surface reaction(CH4-TPSR) revealed a higher methane activation temperature(> 100℃) for the Ni–Ce catalyst as compared to the Ni one. Noticeable improvement of the ceria containing catalyst occurred when the reaction test started at a temperature higher than the methane decomposition temperature. In this case, the sample achieved the same catalytic behavior of the Ni catalyst. As confirmed by XPS analyses, the distinct electronic state of the supported nickel was responsible for the differences in catalytic behavior.

Malnutrition in cirrhosis:More food for thought

Malnutrition is highly prevalent in liver cirrhosis and its presence carries important prognostic *** clinical conditions and pathophysiological mechanisms that cause malnutrition in cirrhosis are multiple and *** and liver decompensation symptoms lead to poor dietary intake;metabolic changes characterised by elevated energy expenditure,reduced glycogen storage,an accelerated starvation response and protein catabolism result in muscle and fat wasting;and,malabsorption renders the cirrhotic patient unable to fully absorb or utilise food that has been *** is therefore a considerable challenge to manage effectively,particularly as liver disease progresses.A high energy,high protein diet is recognised as standard of care,yet patients struggle to follow this recommendation and there is limited evidence to guide malnutrition interventions in cirrhosis and liver *** this review,we seek to detail the factors which contribute to poor nutritional status in liver disease,and highlight complexities far greater than“poor appetite”or“reduced oral intake”leading to *** also discuss management strategies to optimise nutritional status in this patient group,which target the inter-related mechanisms unique to advanced liver ***,future research requirements are suggested,to develop effective treatments for one of the most common and debilitating complications afflicting cirrhotic patients.

Using genetic markers in unpedigreed populations to detect a heritable trait

Before a breeder invests selection pressure on a trait of interest, it needs to be established whether that trait is actually heritable. Some traits may not have been measured widely in pedigreed populations, for example, a disease or deformity may become more prevalent than previously, but is still relatively rare. One approach to detect inheritance would be to screen a commercial population to obtain a sample of "affecteds" (the test group) and to also obtain a random control group. These indi- viduals are then genotyped with a set of genetic markers and the relationships between individuals within each group estimated. If the relatedness is higher in the test group than in the control group, this provides initial evidence for the trait being heritable. A power simulation shows that this approach is feasible with moderate resources.

Rare double fracture-dislocation of the thumb： a case report and review of the literature

Simultaneous fracture/dislocation of the thumb carpometacarpal （CMC）joint and dislocation of the metacarpophalangeal （MCP） joint is considered as a rare injury pattern. We report an unusual case of dorsal disloca- tion of MCP joint of the thumb associated with extraarticular fracture of the base of the first metacarpal in a 28-year-old man. The dislocation of MCP joint had been missed during initial presentation at a peripheral centre. The patient made an uneventful recovery following open reduction and fixa- tion with 1.25 mm Kirschner wire of the MCP joint along with repair of the ulnar collateral ligament. This injury pat- tern has not been previously reported to the best of our knowledge in the English-language based medical literature.

Prediction of Extractable Cd,Pb and Zn in Contaminated Woody Habitat Soils Using a Change Point Detection Method

Accumulation of heavy metals in soils poses a potential risk to plant production, which is related to availability of the metals in soil. The phytoavailability of metals is usually evaluated using extracting solutions such as salts, acids or chelates. The purpose of this study was to identify the most significant soil parameters that can be used to predict the concentrations of acetic and citric acidextractable cadmium(Cd), lead(Pb) and zinc(Zn) in contaminated woody habitat topsoils. Multiple linear regression models were established using two analysis strategies and three sets of variables based on a dataset of 260 soil samples. The performance of these models was evaluated using statistical parameters. Cation exchange capacity, CaCO_3, organic matter, assimilated P, free Al oxide,sand and the total metal concentrations appeared to be the main soil parameters governing the solubility of Cd, Pb and Zn in acetic and citric acid solutions. The results strongly suggest that the metal solubility in extracting solutions is extractable concentrationdependent since models were overall improved by incorporating a change point. This change point detection method was a powerful tool for predicting extractable Cd, Pb and Zn. Suitable predictions of extractable Cd, Pb and Zn concentrations were obtained, with correlation coefficient(adjusted r) ranging from 0.80 to 0.99, given the high complexity of the woody habitat soils studied. Therefore,the predictive models can constitute a decision-making support tool for managing phytoremediation of contaminated soils, making recommendations to control the potential bioavailability of metals. The relationships between acetic and/or citric acid-extractable concentrations and the concentrations of metals into the aboveground parts of plants need to be predicted, in order to make their temporal monitoring easier.

In this talk, I present the results on the pole structure of pion-nucleon scattering in an analytic model based on meson exchange. The analytic properties of scattering amplitudes provide important information. Besides the cuts, the poles and zeros on the different Riemann sheets determine the global behavior of the amplitude on the physical axis. Pole positions and residues allow for a parameterization of resonances in a well-defined way, free of assumptions for the background and energy dependence of the resonance part. This is a necessary condition to relate resonance contributions in different reactions.

Study the Hydration and the Microstructure of Cement Blended with Rice Husk Ash in Comparison with Silica Fume

Rice husk ask (RHA) is not a ultra-fine material as silica fume (SF),but possesses a very high specific surface area because of its porous structure. With the similar chemical composition of RHA and SF,the activity of RHA,therefore,is different from that of SF. The objective of this work is to study the hydration and the microstructure of Portland cement blended with RHA in comparison with SF. The test results show that SF refined the pore structure of cement paste better than RHA. However,the effect of RHA on cement hydration is more pronouned than that of SF for the mixture with low water to binder ratio.
