developing and validating a nestling photographic aging guide for cavity-nesting birds: an example with the European Bee-eater(Merops apiaster)

Background: Accurate estimation of nestlings’ age is essential in avian demography studies as well as in population ecology and conservation. For example, it can be useful for synchronizing nest visits with events of particular interest, such as the age at which young can be safely ringed, or in choosing the best period to attain the most accurate calculation of laying or hatching ***: We constructed a photographic guide for aging European Bee-eaters(Merops apiaster) nestlings to 3-day age classes and evaluated the aging method by performing a validation exercise with several observers with no previous experience in aging bee-eater ***: The aging guide for bee-eater nestlings allowed estimating age to within 3 days with an average accuracy of 0.85. We found the optimal period for aging nestlings was between days 13-18(with accuracy between 0.94 and 0.99), during which the status of feather development was more easily distinguishable from the preceding and subsequent age classes. during the first 3 days after hatching, nestlings could also be aged with high accuracy(0.93). The small size of the nestling in relation to the eggs and the nestling’s inability to raise its head during these first days allowed for good discrimination from the subsequent age class. Between days 25 and 28, nestlings were correctly aged in only half of assignments(0.55 sensitivity) and nestlings belonging to class 7(days 7-9) were the least correctly identified(0.38 sensitivity). However, by visiting the nests at 12 days intervals it is possible to achieve the highest accuracy in age estimation with the smallest disturbance and logistic ***: This study highlighted how indirect methods and a simple protocol can be established and employed to quickly estimate nestling age in cases where handling nestlings is challenging or impossible, while minimizing disturbance in and around the nest.

Automatic detection and evaluation of sugarcane planting rows in aerial images

Sugarcane planting is an important and growing activity in ***,several techniques have been developed over the years to maximize crop productivity and profit,amongst them,processing of sugarcane field *** this sense,this research aims to identify and analyze crop rows and measure their gaps from aerial images of sugarcane *** this,a small Remotely Piloted Aircraft captured the images,generating orthomosaics of the areas for ***,each orthomosaic is classified with the K-Nearest Neighbor algorithm to segment regions of *** row orientation is estimated using the RGB gradient *** operations and computational geometry models are then used to detect and map rows and gaps along the planting row *** evaluate the results,crop rows are mapped and compared to manually taken *** technique obtained an error smaller than 2%when compared to gap length in crop rows from an orthomosaic with the area of 8.05 ha(ha).The proposed approach can map the positioning of the automatically generated row segments appropriately onto manually created ***,our method also achieved similar results when confronted with a manual technique for differing growth stages(40 and 80 days after harvest)of the sugarcane *** proposed method presents a great potential to be adopted in sugarcane planting monitoring。

In scenarios of climatic change when increased global temperatures can be expected,it is essential to search for technologies that favor sapling survival and growth after planting and increase yield in the ***-based particle films(KBPF)have been applied as barriers against the deleterious effects of high levels of solar *** objective of the present study was to assess the effects of applying purified calcined kaolin-based particle film to young eucalyptus *** treatments were carried out:0%(just water),3%,5%,7%,and 10%calcined kaolin applied to the adaxial part of the leaves.A complete randomized block design was used with five treatments and ten *** plants were assessed for height,diameter at ground level,gas exchanges(net photosynthetic CO_(2) assimilation,stomatal conductance and transpiration),instantaneous(WUE)and intrinsic water use efficiency(IWUE),chlorophyll a fluorescence(maximum quantum yield of photosystem II(PSII)(Fv/Fm),concentration of active reaction centers in relation to the quantity of photons absorbed(RC/ABS)and the maximum ratio of quantum yields of photochemical and concurrent non-photochemical processes in PSII(Fv/F0),SPAd reading and leaf *** 3%KBPF concentration showed the best responses in biometric assessments 80 days after planting(dAP)and were corroborated by the responses of the leaf,stem and shoot dry matter production as a *** leaf ontogeny assessments showed positive responses following KBPF application when considering leaf development,with 7%KBPF concentration resulting in the highest mean *** mean specific leaf mass had negative response to high KBPF *** 60 dAP,the gas exchange variables during both assessment periods declined with an increase in KBPF *** differences as a result of KBPF applications were found only at the start of the assessments(34 dAP)for both WUE and for ***‘greenness’(SPAd reading)at 47 days showed a quadratic

Machines that mimic humans have inspired scientists for *** soft robotic hands are a good example of such an endeavor,featuring intrinsic material compliance and continuous motion to deal with uncertainty and adapt to unstructured *** research led to impactful achievements in functional designs,modeling,fabrication,and control of soft ***,the full realization of life-like movements is still challenging to achieve,often based on trial-and-error considerations from design to fabrication,consuming time and *** this study,a soft robotic hand is proposed,composed of soft actuator cores and an exoskeleton,featuring a multimaterial design aided by finite element analysis(FEA)to define the hand geometry and promote finger’s *** actuators are fabricated using molding,and the exoskeleton is 3d-printed in a single *** ON-OFF controller keeps the set fingers’inner pressures related to specific bending angles,even in the presence of *** FEA numerical results were validated by experimental tests,as well as the ability of the hand to grasp objects with different shapes,weights,and *** integrated solution will make soft robotic hands more available to people,at a reduced cost,avoiding the time-consuming design-fabrication trial-and-error processes.

In this study,the relationship between spinodal decomposition and the formation of Ni-rich clusters and G-phase in the ferrite on hardening and pitting corrosion of two thermally aged duplex stainless steels(dSSs)at 475℃was *** indicate that,for 2205 dSS,pitting corrosion behavior is influenced by the presence and size of G-phase precipitates for longer aging times,but this contribution is masked by the advanced stage of spinodal decomposition in the ferritic *** the other hand,for 2101 dSS,the formation of Cr-richer nitrides impairs pitting corrosion resistance more than spinodal decomposition.

Blueberry:Functional Traits and Obtention of Bioactive Compounds

There is pressure from consumers about exchanging synthetic for natural dyes in foods. This review aimed to expose the potential of blueberry (Vaccinium myrtillus) as a source of natural dye, associated with its properties of functional food. Blueberry is a fruit plant natural from temperate climate, rich in phenolic compounds. The properties of phenolic compounds can be attributed to its ability to capture free radicals, deactivating or eliminating them from the body. Anthocyanins are flavonoid phenolic compounds responsible for color of fruits, flowers and vegetables. Blueberry is rich in anthocyanins, being its content more affected by genotype than by climatic or environmental factors. Brazil has the potential to assume an important position in the worldwide market of this fruit, both in natura and as byproducts, whose main destinations are populations from regions with higher income and educational level, as the North America and Europe. due to the importance of blueberry as a source of natural pigments, as well as its high value while associated with functional food, it is important to improve extraction and stabilization processes of anthocyanins from blueberry fruits. Researches should focus on the technical viability and cost reduction in the extraction of this pigment. Pioneer studies with blueberry have been conducted in Brazil, but the intensification of researches will allow yield maximization, increased levels of anthocyanins in fruits, and compound stability after extraction. Another focus should be the use of these natural pigments in order to replace those currently used.

Mathematical Modeling for Isotherms of Mango Pulp Powder,Obtained by Atomization

Mango, as the other fruits, is a perishable food that can be easily deteriorated and presents high levels of post-harvest loss. Therefore, dehydration is an important alternative to use the production excess. In this context, this work aimed at evaluating the hygroscopic behavior of the integral mango pulp powder, obtained by atomization, by means of adsorption isotherm. After applying BET’s, GAB’s, Henderson’s and Oswin’s mathematical models, it was possible to identify that the equations for two models were perfectly adjusted to the experimental results of mango pulp powder. Henderson’s model was the best adjusted experimental curve and showed the lowest average error (E) and the highest determination coefficient (R2) at all temperatures studied.

Impacts of land use and land cover changes on hydrological processes and sediment yield determined using the SWAT model

Land use and land cover (LULC) changes strongly affect local hydrology and sediment *** current study focused on a basin in the Brazilian Amazon and had the following three objectives:(1) to perform an effective diagnosis of flow and sediment yield,(2) to evaluate the impacts of LULC changes over the last 40 years on the hydro-sedimentological variables,and (3) to investigate the impacts of the possible trends or breaking points in the flow,surface runoff,and sediment yield *** Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model validation showed that the simulated results were consistent with the data measured in the dynamic reproduction of flow ***,changes in LULC altered surface runoff,sediment yield,and flow according to the Mann-Kendall and Pettitt non-parametric *** was also observed that the sub-basins in which pastureland is predominant are more susceptible to increased surface runoff and sediment *** to trend and homogeneity tests,these sub-basins had break points in the time series of these *** the other hand,in the sub-basins whose land cover is predominantly forest,the time series is homogeneous and *** current study highlighted the impacts that 40 years of LULC changes in an Amazonian basin had on hydro-sedimentological variables,which,in turn,can play an important role in changing the hydrological cycle,consequently these changes can also impact diverse human activities in the region,such as agribusiness,livestock,energy production,food security,and public water ***,it is concluded that the SWAT model is a good estimator of hydro-sedimentological processes in Amazonian basins and can be used by decision makers in the management of water and environmental resources.

development of synthetic bone substitutes has arisen as a major research interest in the need to find an alternative to autologous bone *** an ovine model,the present pre-clinical study presents a synthetic bone graft(BonelikeVR)in combination with a cellular system as an alternative for the regeneration of non-critical *** association of biomaterials and cell-based therapies is a promising strategy for bone tissue *** stem cells(MSCs)from human dental pulp have demonstrated both in vitro and in vivo to interact with diverse biomaterial systems and promote mineral deposition,aiming at the reconstruction of osseous ***,these cells can be found and isolated from many ***-critical bone defects were treated with BonelikeVR with or without MSCs obtained from the human dental *** showed that BonelikeVR and MSCs treated defects showed improved bone regeneration compared with the defects treated with BonelikeVR ***,it was observed that the biomaterial matrix was reabsorbed and gradually replaced by new bone during the healing *** therefore propose this combination as an efficient binomial strategy that promotes bone growth and vascularization in non-critical bone defects.

AIM To determine the prevalence of epstein-barr virus(eb V)-associated gastric carcinomas in the North Region of Portugal and to study its clinicopathological characteristics. METHOdS We have performed a retrospective study including a total of 179 consecutive patients with gastric cancer(GC) submitted to gastrectomy during 2011 at the Portuguese Oncology Institute of Porto. Clinical and pathological data was collected from individual clinical records and inserted on a database with unique codification. Tumour tissues were collected from the institutional tumour bank. eb V was detected by in situ hybridization for the detection of eb V-encoded small RNAs(ebe Rs) and eb V latent proteins(LMP1 and LMP2 A) were detected by *** The analysis showed that eb V-associated gastric carcinomas(eb Va GC) represents 8.4%(15/179) of all GC cases, with a significant differential distribution among histological types(P dullary carcinomas, 100%(1/1) of adenosquamous carcinoma, 8.7%(8/92) of tubular adenocarcinomas, 8.0%(2/25) of mixed carcinomas and 2%(1/51) in poorly cohesive carcinomas. The analysis revealed a higher predominance of eb Va GC in the upper third and middle(cardia, fundus and body) of the stomach(P = 0.041), a significant lower number of regional lymph nodes invasion(P = 0.025) and a tendency for better prognosis(P = 0.222). eb V latent protein expression revealed that all eb Va GC cases were LMP1-negative, nevertheless 6 cases(40%) expressed LPM2 A, which reveals that these cases show a distinct eb V-Latency profile(latency II-like).CONCLUSION eb Va GC represents 8.4% of all GC in the North Region of Portugal. The eb V-infected patients have specific clinic-pathological features that should be further explored to develop new strategies of management and treatment.
