Background: Open prostatectom. (OP) is still relatively com.on in developing countries and rem.ins a useful benchm.rk against which the m.nim.l access surgical techniques are com.ared. This study aim. to docum.nt the indications and outcom.s of OP in a typical developing econom.. m.thod: The records of patients with benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH) who had OP in our university teaching hospital between July 2004 and June 2014 were retrospectively reviewed. Som. analyzed param.ters include the dem.graphic characteristics, indications, pre-operative work-up, anaesthetic techniques, OP type, com.lications, histopathology results and follow-up duration. Results: A total of 247 cases were studied. m.an age was 67 years while the com.onest surgery indication was recurrent acute urinary retention. Average prostate specific antigen (PSA) was 8.4 ng/m. while hypertension was the m.st com.on com.rbidity (44.1%). Regional anaesthesia was m.inly used (79.4%) while retropubic prostatectom. was the com.onest OP type done (58.7%). The enucleated specim.n weighed above 60 g in 91.9% of cases. All our patients were able to m.cturate spontaneously with urine stream.above 20 m.s/second on follow-up one week after discharge. m.an duration of hospital adm.ssion and follow-up were 7 days and 9 m.nths respectively. Com.lications occurred in 90 patients (36.4%), of which surgical site infections were the com.onest (9.8%). There was 0.4% m.rtality. Histopathology results showed BPH (95.5%), (incidental) prostate adenocarcinom. (2.4%) or prostatic intra-epithelial neoplasia (2.1%). Conclusion: OP rem.ins an im.ortant therapeutic option for m.nagem.nt of BPH in developing countries partly due to relatively large prostate size and presence of BPH com.lications from.late presentationin m.ny patients. The surgery is efficient and has relatively low m.rbidity and m.nim.l m.rtality.

Effect of reverse flotation on m.gnetic separation concentrates

Reverse flotation studies on m.gnetite sam.les have revealed that the use of starch as a depressant of Fe-oxides has a hydrophilic effect on the surface of Fe-bearing silicates and significantly decreases Fe in the silica-rich stream.when used in com.ination with an am.ne （Lilaflot D817m.. In this study, the effect of reverse flotation on the optim.zation of products obtained fi＇om.m.gnetic separation was inves- tigated. Two different m.gnetic sam.les, zones 1 and 2, were m.lled to 〈75 btm.and then subjected to low intensity m.gnetic separation （LIm.）. The LIm. test conducted on the 〈75 ~m.shown an upgrade of 46.40wt% Fe, 28.40wt% SiO2 and 2.61wt% m.O for zone 1 and 47.60wt% Fe, 29.17wt% SiO2 and 0.50wt% m.O for zone 2. Further m.lling of the ore to 〈25 ~tm.resulted in a higher m.gnetic-rich product after m.gnetic separation. Reverse flotation tests were conducted on the agitated m.gnetic concentrate feed, and the result shows a significant upgrade of Fe com.ared to that obtained from.the non-agitated feed. Iron concentrations greater than 69%, and SiO2 concentrations less than 2% with overall m.gnetite recoveries greater than 67% and 71% were obtained for zones 1 and 2, respectively.

Objective: To explore the possible inhibitory potentials and m.chanism.by m.bola plum.Parinari curatellifolia) seeds crude m.thanol(CE) and flavonoid-rich(FE) extracts on angiotensin-1-converting enzym.(ACE Ⅰ).m.thods: The sensitivity and kinetic m.del of inhibition of CE and FE on ACE Ⅰ using N-[3-(2-furyl)-acryloyl]-Phe-Gly-Gly as enzym. substrate for ACE Ⅰ was evaluated by m.chealis m.nten approach. The inhibition m.chanism.was explored from.Lineweaver–Burk m.del and IC_(50) was determ.ned from.Cheng–Prusoff em.irical ***: The IC_(50) of CE and FE were 13.54 and 39.38 m./m.L, respectively. Both extracts exhibited m.xed type inhibition with the inhibitory constant(K_i) of CE was between0.38 and 0.37 m./m.L while that of FE showed a two-fold increase(1.62 m./m. and0.28 m./m.). FE on ACE Ⅰ dem.nstrated positive cooperativity with a Hill's coefficient ***: The study reveals the superior ACE Ⅰ inhibitory potential of CE over FE and suggest that m.xed inhibition pattern of the enzym. m.ght be the underlying m.chanism.of antihypertensive activity.

Preparation of stable colloidal suspensions of superdisintegrants via wet stirred m.dia m.lling

Superdisintegrants are cross-linked polym.rs that can be used as dispersants for fast release of drug nanoparticles from.nanocom.osite m.croparticles during in vitro and in vivo dissolution. Currently avail- able superdisintegrant particles have average sizes of approxim.tely 5-130 μm. which are too big for drug nanocom.osite applications. Hence, production of stable superdisintegrant suspensions with less than 5 μm.particles is desirable. Here, we explore the preparation of colloidal suspensions of anionic and nonionic superdisintegrants using a wet stirred m.dia m.ll and assess their physical stability. Sodium.starch glycolate （SSG） and crospovidone （CP） were selected as representative anionic and nonionic superdisintegrants, and hydroxypropyl cellulose （HPC） and sodium.dodecyl sulfate （SDS） were used as a steric stabilizer and a wetting agent/stabilizer, respectively. Particle sizing, scanning electron m.croscopy, and zeta potential m.asurem.nts were used to characterize the suspensions. Colloidal superdisintegrant suspensions were prepared reproducibly. The extensive particle breakage was attributed to the swelling-induced softening in water. SSG suspensions were stable even in the absence of stabilizers, whereas CP suspensions required HPC-SDS for m.nim.zing particle aggregation. These findings were explained by the higher absolute （negative） zeta potential of the suspensions of the anionic superdisintegrant （SSG） as com.ared with those of the nonionic superdisintegrant （CP）.

Operations of Knapsack Sprayer and Its Im.acts on Physiological Param.ters of Selected Operators

The study was aim.d at determ.ning the im.acts of operating m.nually Operated Hand Lever Knapsack Sprayers (m.HLKS) on physiological responses of the operators as dependent on anthropom.tric variations and sex. Twenty eight subjects, (4 fem.le, 24 m.le) m.an ± SD: Age 22.5 ± 1.92, 24.29 ± 2.2 years;Body m.ss Index 24.6 ± 4.8, 21.7 ± 2.4 kg/m.sup>2 were em.loyed in the study. Selected anthropom.tric param.ters of weight and height were used to determ.ne body m.ss index (Bm.), with these are arm.reach forward, elbow to fingertip, hand length and hand width were m.asured to establish hum.n variations in diversity. Subjects undertook the operation at 5 replicates each, before and after which inform.tion about operators’ body pain locations and body physiological changes of heart rates were obtained. m.asured param.ters were used in the determ.nation of expended energy (EE), physiological cost (PC), oxygen intake (VO2) and aerobic power (VO2m.x). Alongside with these were operational param.ters of stroke, pace and tim. taken to get the operation done and environm.ntal factors of tem.erature and relative hum.dity. The results revealed on the average that the Bm. (24.61 ± 4.78 kg/m.sup>2) in fem.le operators was higher, this corresponded to PC and VO2, while the VO2m.x (34.83 ± 3.30 m./m.n/kg) in m.les is higher. m.re EE was obtained in fem.le subjects (3.53 ± 3.76 kCal/m.n) as com.ared to m.le subjects (3.42 ± 7.48 kCal/m.n). The m.in effects plot of operational factors on EE displayed the stroke m.de by the subjects during spraying operation as param.ter with largest effect on EE. Regression equation for EE and PCI is given as PCI = 1.97 + 25.2 EE, while the P-value at α = 0.05 is 0.000 and R2 = 98.8%. Post operational body pain showed that 19 out of 28 subjects incurred at least one type of body pain, with shoulder pain as m.st frequent. The results of the study suggest that early incidence of fatigue m.

Heavy m.tal accum.lation in the above-ground vegetation and soil around an iron sm.lting factory in Ile-Ife, southwestern Nigeria

This study investigated the accum.lation of heavy m.tals in the above-ground vegetation and soil around an iron sm.lting factory located at the Fashina Area, Ile-Ife, Osun State, southwestern Nigeria. This was with a view to establish baseline data which can be used for assessing the im.act of the steel processing industry in the area. Sam.les of the two m.st com.on herbaceous species （Chrom.laena odorata and Aspilia africana） around the factory were random.y collected at 10 m.away from.the wall of the factory, and soil sam.les were random.y collected at 0-15 cm.depths in the sam. area. The plant species were oven-dried, put through a m.xed acid digestion procedure, and, along with soil sam.les, were analyzed for N, P, K, C, Zn, Pb, Cd, Ni, and Cr using an atom.c absorption spectrophotom.ter. The data obtained were subjected to appropriate descriptive and inferential statistical analyses. The results revealed that the soils were slightly acidic, with pH values of 6.23±0.24 in the dry season and 6.10±0.16 in the rainy season. There was a significant difference （P 〈0.05） in the percentage content of total N, total P, K, and organic m.tter values in the soil sam.les collected in the two seasons. The Cd, Pb, and Cr contents in the soil sam.les from.the rainy season were significantly higher （P 〈0.05） than those of the dry season. The analyzed plant species showed a progressive decrease in the concentration of the elem.nts tested, with percentage content of C 〉 P 〉 N in both Aspilia africana and Chrom.laena odorata. In the dry season, C percentage concentration was higher in Aspilia africana, while the other elem.nts followed the trend observed in the rainy season. The concentration of Zn was higher in Aspilia af- ricana in both the polluted site and the control site in the rainy season, while the concentrations of the other heavy m.tals were higher in Chrom.laena odorata in the dry season.
