Objective: To explore the effects of aqueous extract from Phthirusa pyrifolia leaves(67 mg/kg body weight for 12 days) on the reproductive function of male Wistar rats through oral ***: Animals(n = 30), aged 13 weeks and weighing(378.5 ± 5.0) g, were housed in a vivarium under controlled environmental conditions [photoperiod of 12 h light/dark,temperature of(23 ± 1)C] and were fed standard rations ad libitum. The experiment ran for 12 days, wherein animals were divided into three groups: negative control(n = 6)received water, positive control(n = 12) with finasteride at a concentration of 1.0 mg/kg;and a test group(n = 12) submitted to aqueous extract. At the end of the experiment, the animals were sacrificed and submitted to ***: The morphological results of the testes showed that the aqueous extract induced significant changes in the diameter and cross-sectional area of the seminiferous tubules as well as the thickness of the seminiferous epithelium. Furthermore, the extract was able to abruptly decrease testosterone concentrations by about 81.88% in the treated group when compared with the negative control,(47.0 ± 4.8) ng/d L and(255.0 ± 2.0) ng/d L,respectively, and 76.8%,(211.0 ± 8.7) ng/d L, when compared with finasteride. The mineral industry is of great importance for the economy and for the development of Brazil. However, climate change further accentuates the impacts caused by extreme weather and climate events on the logistics and operation processes of the mineral production chain (from the mine to the port). In order to reduce these effects, it is essential to have information about the future climate that will help this economic sector to carry out better long-term planning of its activities. However, the current scientific literature still lacks studies with this approach applied to the mineral industry. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the future seasonal patterns of climate extremes in eastern Amazonia, exploring their impacts on the mineral production chain in the near future (2019-2050). To categorize the dry and rainy climate extremes, the Standard Precipitation Index (SPI) was calculated for the precipitation data series of Climate Prediction Center (CPC) observations and the PRECIS regional modeling system, considering the IPCC RCP4.5. The 1981-2005 period was defined as the present climate and used to assess the performance of the modeling system in reproducing the extremes. The analyses were based on the relative frequency of the categories of dry and rainy extremes. The performance evaluation of PRECIS showed that it had better accuracy in representing seasonal extremes of drought than extremes of rain. Along the mineral chain in eastern Amazonia, its accuracy was better over the port region, except for the dry extremes experienced from June to August (JJA), and from December to February (DJF) and March to May (MAM) for rainy extremes. The analysis of the frequency of occurrence of these events for the future indicates a greater probability of rain extremes along the mineral chain compared to another category of extremes. A method was developed for the analysis of ester-linked phenolic acids in forage samples using extraction by an ultrasound-assisted treatment and quantification by HPLC with a UV-VIS detector. A reversed-phase C18 column was used for developing the method and the optimal condition was established with isocratic elution using acetonitrile/methanol/H3PO4 pH 2.08 (13:12.5:74.5) as the mobile phase. To reduce the time of sample processing, the extraction of ester-linked phenolic acids was studied using ultrasound bath and the results were then compared with those from an extraction usual using alkaline hydrolysis (20°C for 24 h). The method was valued through external and internal calibration. Internal calibration using o-coumaric acid as internal standard and m-coumaric acid as surrogate internal standard showed better results. The detection limits were of 0.09 and 0.04 mg●L-1 for p-coumaric and ferulic acids, respectively. The proposed method showed a good linear dynamic range (3.00 - 30.00 mg●L-1) for the analytes. The usefulness of the methodology was demonstrated by addition-recovery experiments using forage samples and values were in the 83 to 99% range. The extraction of ester-linked phenolic acids by 120 minutes of ultrasound bath was faster and more reproducible than alkaline hydrolysis (20°C for 24 h).

Laparoscopic Gastrectomy after the Age of Eighty:Still a Good Choice?

Main Goals: Evaluation and comparison of short-term results of totally laparoscopic gastrectomy performed for gastric carcinoma in two groups of patients: older and younger than eighty years. Material and Methods: From 1st January 2011 to 31st October 2012, we have treated 110 patients for gastric carcinoma. 79 patients were submitted to radical gastric resection (the remainder 31 patients either presented with cardia carcinoma or were submitted to palliative treatment). In 33 cases we performed a laparoscopic gastrectomy while in the remainder 46 cases, the open approach was used. The 33 patients operated by a laparoscopic approach were the subject of this study. They were divided in two groups: Group A—patients eighty years old or older (10 cases) and Group B—patients younger than 80 years (23 cases). We evaluated and compared the short-term outcomes of both groups. Results: In all 33 cases, a gastrectomy was performed using a totally laparoscopic approach. There was no need to convert into open surgery. No patient needed to stay in the Intensive Care Unit. One patient needed a night stay in the Post Anesthetic Care Unit, due to subcutaneous emphysema (which resolved within 24 hours). There was a fatality in Group B, due to hepatic failure. The median of the operating time was 224 minutes in Group B and 199 minutes in Group A. The difference was non-significant (pvalue > 0.05). Group A patients were discharged in 6 to 10 days while those in Group B were discharged in 6 to 9 days. Conclusion: The results in this series suggest that totally laparoscopic gastrectomy is effective and safe in patients eighty years old and older, with low morbidity and mortality and short hospital stay. It compares favourably with the results of the same technique applied to younger patients. We suggest that laparoscopic approach to gastrectomy can be used in older patients, allowing them to benefit from the advantages of minimally invasive surgery.

Hypopigmented Mycosis Fungoides in a 7-Year-Old Boy

Hypopigmented mycosis fungoides (HMF) is an uncommon variant of cutaneous T-cell lymphoma. It is more frequent in dark-skinned people, particularly children. The HMF diagnose is difficult, especially in early stages because this condition resembles benign skin diseases. Thus is histopathological analysis very important for the diagnosis. We report a case of a 7-year-old child with widespread HMF confirmed by histopathology that showed cells tagging along the dermal/epidermal junction and extending into the epidermis in a pattern of epidermotropism and focal cell aggregates in the epidermis (Pautrier’s microabscess). We demonstrate the importance of clinical suspicion for this cutaneous neoplasia in patients with hypopigmentated lesions.
