The first version of the Brazilian Oceano- graphic Modeling and Observation Network （REMO） ocean data assimilation system into the Hybrid Coordi- nate Ocean Model （HYCOM）（RODAS H） has recently been constructed for research and operational purposes. The system is based on a multivariate Ensemble Optimal Interpolation （EnOI） scheme and considers the high fre- quency variability of the model error co-variance matrix. The EnOl can assimilate sea surface temperature （SST）, satellite along-track and gridded sea level anomalies （SLA）, and vertical profiles of temperature （T） and salinity （S） from Argo. The first observing system experiment was carried out over the Atlantic Ocean （78°S-50°N, 100°W-20°E） with HYCOM forced with atmospheric reanalysis from 1 January to 30 June 2010. Five integra- tions were performed, including the control run without assimilation. In the other four, different observations were assimilated： SST only （A SST）; Argo T-S profiles only （AArgo）; along-track SLA only （A_SLA）; and all data employed in the previous runs （A_All）. The A_SST, A_Argo, and A_SLA runs were very effective in improv- ing the representation of the assimilated variables, but they had relatively little impact on the variables that were not assimilated. In particular, only the assimilation of S was able to reduce the deviation of S with respect to ob- servations. Overall, the A_All run produced a good analy- sis by reducing the deviation of SST, T, and S with respect to the control run by 39%, 18%, and 30%, respectively, and by increasing the correlation of SLA by 81%.

Assessing the estrogenic potency in a Portuguese wastewater treatment plant using an integrated approach

The estrogenic potency of a wastewater treatment plant （WWTP） was evaluated using chemical and biological analyses, which showed that after the station treatment processes some of the selected endocrine disruptor compounds （EDCs） were still present in the treated effluent （e.g., bisphenol A, alkylphenols, estrone）. Thus, the most common endocrine EDCs were identified and quantified and the overall estrogenicity of the treated effluent assessed by integrating the results. Male goldfish （Carassius auratus） were used as biological indicators in a 28-day experiment. Vitellogenin （Vtg）, gonadosomatic and hepatosomatic indices, steroids （17β-estradiol and 11-ketotestosterone） and histopathology were biomarkers used in fish to evaluate WWTP treated effluent estrogenicity, in combination with instrumental analyses. The results showed a significant increase （P 〈 0.01） in plasma and liver Vtg, which were significantly correlated （r = 0.66; P 〈 0.01）. The gonadosmatic index was significantly （P 〈 0.01） reduced in exposed fish. The steroid analyses revealed significant elevations in 17β-estradiol and depressed 11-ketotestosterone concentrations. The histological examinations show changes in exposed fish gonads, such as regressed testes and in some cases （43% to 75%） the development of ovo-testis in fish exposed to 50% and 100% treated effluent.

Fish farming in Brazil has been growing, and a new branch that has been taking up space and evolving, every year, as a source of leisure, is fish-pay. Despite being a leisure practice, this type of fish farming has contributed to the development of Brazilian aquaculture. With the growth of aquaculture in the country, concerns about the quality of the product arise, both financially and microbiologically. Aquaculture has caused some environmental problems, such as the increase in the population growth of bacteria specific to the aquatic environment and the possible proliferation of microorganisms resistant to antibiotics due to the indiscriminate use of these drugs in nurseries. Inadequate water quality conditions can contaminate fish and favor the development of diarrheal infections due to the microbiological load present in the fish. This article aims to review the literature covering the general characteristics of fish, including aspects of nutritional importance, and mechanisms of deterioration and analysis of freshness.

Objective: To determine the predictors of absence of lesion on cone biopsy (white cone). We evaluated several factors including parity, cytology, human papillomavirus (HPV) typing, biopsy, colposcopy, smoking habit, use of oral contraceptive or condom, and immunosuppression as predictors for absence of dysplasia. Methods: Of 510 patients with CIN (cervical intraepithelial neoplasia) treated by loop electrosurgical excision (LEEP) in the Fundación Jimenez Diaz hospital between 2012 and 2016, 51 (10%) patients had a white cone and were defined as the study group. The control group was established from two randomly selected controls for each case (n = 102). Results: The study group had a higher prevalence of low-grade cytology (p 0.001), minor changes (p 0.01), and CIN 2 (<0.001) than the control group. The study group had a lower rate of oral contraceptive use (p = 0.005), as demonstrated by the multivariate analysis (except for low-grade cytology). Conclusions: In conclusion, this study indicates that the incidence of white cone in our institution is 10% of all the cone biopsy and women with low-risk cytology, minor changes in colposcopy, CIN 2, and no use of oral contraceptive have a high probability of having no lesions in the conization specimen.

Throughout its lifetime,high-voltage circuit breaker(HVCB)contacts suffer from inevitable degradation processes,especially during the formation of electric *** degraded contacts can reduce the current interruption capacity and increase the chances of operational faults,which might lead to considerable financial ***,the use of efficient evaluating techniques is a key factor to achieve systems *** dynamic resistance measurement(DRM)is a technique that can be used to evaluate the degradation level of HVCB'*** stands out from the usual technique,static resistance measurement,by allowing the assessment of both the main contacts and the arcing contacts(ACs).Usually,the mean resistance or the area under the DRM curve is used to estimate the AC ***,DRM is a non-standardised technique and there are no specified parameters to evaluate the real wear ***,an analysis of alternative parameters extractible from the DRM technique is presented in this study,such as amplitude and variance of the DRM *** results attest the possible use of more than one parameter for the continuous evaluation of HVCB ACs,characterising the DRM as a more complete and precise diagnosis tool.

Meningococcal disease is the acute infection caused by Neisseria meningitidis, which has humans as the only natural host. The disease is widespread around the globe and is known for its epidemical potential and high rates of lethality and morbidity. The highest number of cases of the disease is registered in the semi-arid regions of sub-Saharan Africa. In Brazil, it is endemic with occasional outbreaks, epidemics and sporadic cases occurring throughout the year, especially in the winter. The major epidemics of the disease occurred in Brazil in the 70's caused by serogroups A and C. Serogroups B, C and Y represent the majority of cases in Europe, the Americas and Australia. However, there has been a growing increase in serogroup W in some areas. The pathogen transmission happens for respiratory route(droplets) and clinically can lead to meningitis and sepsis(meningococcemia). The treatment is made with antimicrobial and supportive care. For successful prevention, we have some measures like vaccination, chemoprophylaxis and droplets' precautions. In this review, we have described and clarify clinical features of the disease caused by N. meningitidis regarding its relevance for healthcare professionals.
