Characterization of Manmade and Recycled Cellulosic Fibers for Their Application in Building Materials

The aim of this study was to characterize two types of cellulosic fibers obtained from bleached wood pulp and unbleached recycled waste paper with different cellulose content(from 47.4 percent up to 82 percent),to compare and to analyze the potential use of the recycled fibers for building application,such as plastering *** in the chemical composition,cellulose crystallinity and degree of polymerization of the fibers were *** recycled fibers of lower quality showed heterogeneity in the fiber sizes(width and length),and they had greater surface roughness in comparison to high purity wood pulp *** high purity fibers(cellulose content>80.0 percent)had greater crystallinity and more homogeneous and smooth surfaces than the recycled *** presence of calcite and kaolinite in all of the recycled cellulosic fibers samples was confirmed,whereas only one wood pulp sample contained *** influence of the chemical composition was reflected in the fiber density *** in the chemical composition and cellulose structure of the fibers affected the specific surface area,porosity and thermo physical properties of the *** favorable values of thermal conductivity were reached for the recycled fibers than for the wood pulp *** the suitability of the recycled fibers with inorganic impurities originating from the paper-making processes for their use as fillers in plastering mortars(0.5 wt.%fiber content of the total weight of the filler and binder)confirmed their application by achieving a compressive strength value of 28 day-cured fiber-cement mortar required by the standard as well as by measured more favorable value of capillary water absorption coefficient.

Dysregulation of RNA modification systems in clinical populations with neurocognitive disorders

The study of modified RNA known as epitranscriptomics has become increasingly relevant in our understanding of disease-modifying mechanisms. Methylation of N6 adenosine(m6A) and C5 cytosine(m5C) bases occur on mRNAs, tRNA, mt-tRNA, and rRNA species as well as non-coding RNAs. With emerging knowledge of RNA binding proteins that act as writer, reader, and eraser effector proteins, comes a new understanding of physiological processes controlled by these systems. Such processes when spatiotemporally disrupted within cellular nanodomains in highly specialized tissues such as the brain, give rise to different forms of disease. In this review, we discuss accumulating evidence that changes in the m6A and m5C methylation systems contribute to neurocognitive disorders. Early studies first identified mutations within FMR1 to cause intellectual disability Fragile X syndromes several years before FMR1 was identified as an m6A RNA reader protein. Subsequently, familial mutations within the m6A writer gene METTL5, m5C writer genes NSUN2, NSUN3, NSUN5, and NSUN6, as well as THOC2 and THOC6 that form a protein complex with the m5C reader protein ALYREF, were recognized to cause intellectual development disorders. Similarly, differences in expression of the m5C writer and reader effector proteins, NSUN6, NSUN7, and ALYREF in brain tissue are indicated in individuals with Alzheimer’s disease, individuals with a high neuropathological load or have suffered traumatic brain injury. Likewise, an abundance of m6A reader and anti-reader proteins are reported to change across brain regions in Lewy bodies diseases, Alzheimer’s disease, and individuals with high cognitive reserve. m6A-modified RNAs are also reported significantly more abundant in dementia with Lewy bodies brain tissue but significantly reduced in Parkinson’s disease tissue, whilst modified RNAs are misplaced within diseased cells, particularly where synapses are located. According to the recent policies regarding energy use in buildings and the need of retrofit strategies,the aim of this work is to support policies concerning the installation of ground source heat exchangers in urban and historical areas,raising the awareness on the potential energy saving achievable with optimal sizing and limited impact on the urban *** have been developed distinguishing among existing and historic buildings,focusing on single-family terrace houses,which are the typical residential buildings in European historic centres.A methodology for the optimal sizing of ground source heat pumps,eventually considering dual-source system or air system has been developed combining simulations of a photovoltaic system to estimate the self-sufficiency and the self-consumption for five orientations of the *** results have been obtained for warm cli-mates,with negligible heating energy demand and possibly free cooling systems rather than traditional cooling systems needed in *** temperature was acceptable despite unbalanced energy *** proper inclination,photovoltaic systems could provide up to 40%of self-sufficiency share also in northern *** energy-economic analysis was carried out obtaining a variety of cases representing a general overview of the European building stock and the potential benefits achievable in terms of renewable energy share,energy savings and economic investments needed to be extended to simulations at urban scale.

Changes of Porosity and Roughness of Concrete Surfaces Due to Microbial Corrosion

The issue of the building materials biocorrosion has a significant economic dimension because it results in the costly repair. The start and the course of corrosion are conditioned by many factors which undoubtedly include biological effects like the influence of vegetation and microorganisms causing the so called microbial corrosion. Microorganisms have also a considerable share in the decay and degradation of different building materials. The activity of sulphuratum is the keystone of many processes in nature and in industry. The sulphuric bacteria oxidize hydrogen sulphide produced by sulphate-reducing bacteria into sulphuric acid resulting in the acid or sulphate corrosion of cement stone. The paper is aimed on evaluation of porosity and roughness of concrete samples surface as elementary characteristics of microbial corrosion. After 4 months exposure to the real conditions in sewers deposition the changes were observed by confocal laser microscopy and consequently analyzed and interpreted.

The clinical role and underlying mechanisms of valproic acid(VPA)on bone homeostasis remain ***,we confirmed that VPA treatment was associated with decreased bone mass and bone mineral density(BMD)in both patients and *** effect was attributed to VPA-induced elevation in osteoclast formation and *** RNA-sequencing,we observed a significant rise in precursor miR-6359 expression in VPA-treated osteoclast precursors in vitro,and further,a marked upregulation of mature miR-6359(miR-6359)in vivo was demonstrated using quantitative real-time PCR(qRT-PCR)and miR-6359 fluorescent in situ hybridization(miR-6359-FISH).Specifically,the miR-6359 was predominantly increased in osteoclast precursors and macrophages but not in neutrophils,T lymphocytes,monocytes and bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells(BMSCs)following VPA stimulation,which influenced osteoclast differentiation and bone-resorptive ***,VPA-induced miR-6359 enrichment in osteoclast precursors enhanced reactive oxygen species(ROS)production by silencing the SIRT3 protein expression,followed by activation of the MAPK signaling pathway,which enhanced osteoclast formation and activity,thereby accelerating bone ***,there are no medications that can effectively treat VPA-induced bone ***,we constructed engineered small extracellular vesicles(E-sEVs)targeting osteoclast precursors in bone and naturally carrying anti-miR-6359 by introducing of EXOmotif(CGGGAGC)in the 3’-end of the anti-miR-6359 *** confirmed that the E-sEVs exhibited decent bone/osteoclast precursor targeting and exerted protective therapeutic effects on VPA-induced bone loss,but not on ovariectomy(OVX)and glucocorticoid-induced osteoporotic models,deepening our understanding of the underlying mechanism and treatment strategies for VPA-induced bone loss.
