Effects of progesterone on T-type-Ca^(2+)-channel expression in Purkinje cells

Impact of OCT scan-patterns in identifying morphological features of lamellar macular holes and macular pseudoholes

AIM:To evaluate the impact of the optical coherence tomography(OCT)scan patterns on the detection of the features associated with lamellar macular hole(LMH)and macular pseudohole(MPH).METHODS:This is a retrospective analysis of 100 consecutive eyes with LMH(n=41)and MPH(n=59)having at least three of the following OCT features,which include mandatory criteria for the diagnosis of LMH and MPH:Epiretinal membrane,epiretinal proliferation,verticalization,intraretinal cystoid spaces,foveoschisis,irregular foveal contour,foveal cavity with undermined edges,and ellipsoid line *** outcome measurement was the detection frequency of the features in three different OCT scan patterns:1)volume scan;2)six radial scans(R6);and 3)vertical and horizontal radial scans(R2).RESULTS:Of the total eight features,the maximal detection frequency was found as 4.45±1.45,4.35±1.47,and 3.70±1.59,by the volume,R6 and R2,respectively.R2 was inferior to the other patterns in detection of the total features(P<0.001),whereas R6 and volume patterns were found comparable(P=0.312).CONCLUSION:The physician should be aware that the selection of the OCT-scan pattern may influence the detection of mandatory morphological criteria for the diagnosis of LMH and MPH.

Detection of bladder trabeculation by voiding cystourethrography and sonography:observations in boys with posterior urethral valves

Long-lasting effects of unplanned logging on the seed rain of mixed conifer-hardwood forests in southern South America

Natural compounds and extracts from Mexican medicinal plants with anti-leishmaniasis activity: An update

Leishmaniasis is considered as an emerging, uncontrolled disease and is endemic in 98 countries. Annually, about 2 million cases of cutaneous and 500000 cases of visceraltype leishmaniasis are recorded and 60000 persons died from the disease. In Mexico,cutaneous leishmaniasis is known as chiclero's ulcer and is reported in 22 states, it is considered as a health problem. For its treatment, pentavalent antimonial drugs are administered. These drugs cause severe side effects, are costly. Drug-resistant cases have been reported and have been developing for over 70 years. One alternative to the drugs that are currently available is to find active molecules in medicinal plants. Dihydrocorynantheine, corynantheine and corynantheidine are active against Leishmania major,while harmane, pleiocarpin, buchtienin, luteolin and quercetin are active against Leishmania donovani. In Mexico, about 20 medicinal plants have been evaluated against Leishmania mexicana, among which the most active are Tridax procumbens, Lonchocarpus xuul and Pentalinon andrieuxii. From these plants, active compounds with IC_(50)≤30 mg/mL or m M have been isolated, such as 3(S)-16,17-didehydrofalcarinol or Oxylipin, cholestra-4,20,24-trien-3-one or pentalinosterol, 24-methylcholest-4-24(28)-dien-3-one, cholest-4-en-3-one, 6,7-dihydroneridie-none, neridienone, cholest-5,20,24-trien-3β-ol, and isocordoin. Today, only pentalinonsterol has been synthesized and assayed in the visceral leishmaniasis experimental model using BALB/c mice infected with Leishmania donovani. Liposome formulation of this compound administered by intravenous route at 2.5 mg/kg showed a significant reduction of parasite load in mouse liver and spleen.

Purpose:This study was aimed to determine associations of accelerometer-determined time and bouts of sedentary behavior,light physical activity(LPA),and moderate-to-vigorous PA(MVPA)with sarcopenia and incident falls over 12 ***:A total of 3334 Swedish 70-year-olds were assessed for sarcopenia,as defined by the revised definition of the European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older *** were based on low scores for appendicular lean mass(dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry),hand grip strength,and the Timed Up and Go *** 7 days after baseline,total time and total number of bouts(≥10 min of continuous activity at a given intensity)of activity performed at sedentary,LPA,and MVPA intensities were assessed by *** falls were self-reported 6 months and 12 months after ***:Only 1.8%of participants had probable or confirmed *** multivariable adjustment for other levels of activity,only greater MVPA time was associated with a decreased likelihood of having low appendicular lean mass,low hand grip strength,and slow Timed Up and Go time as defined by the European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People criteria(all p0.05).Conclusion:Higher amounts of accelerometer-determined MVPA are consistently associated with a decreased likelihood of sarcopenia and its components,regardless of the length of bouts or amounts of sedentary behavior.
