Factors predicting poor prognosis in ischemic colitis

AIM： To determine the clinical, analytical and endoscopic factors related to ischemic colitis （IC） severity. METHODS： A total of 85 patients were enrolled in a retrospective study from January 1996 to May 2004. There were 53 females and 32 males （age 74.6 ± 9.4 years, range 45-89 years）. The patients were diagnosed as IC. The following variables were analyzed including age, sex, period of time from the appearance of symptoms to admission, medical history, medication, stool frequency, clinical symptoms and signs, blood tests （hemogram and basic biochemical profile）, and endoscopic findings. Patients were divided in mild IC group and severe IC group （surgery and/or death）. Qualitative variables were analyzed using chi-square test and parametric data were analyzed using Student＇s t test （P 〈 0.05）. RESULTS： The mild IC group was consisted of 69 patients （42 females and 27 males, average age 74.7 ± 12.4 years）. The severe IC group was composed of 16 patients （11 females and 5 males, average age of 73.8 ± 12.4 years）. One patient died because of failure of medical treatment （no surgery）, 15 patients underwent surgery （6 after endoscopic diagnosis and 9 after peroperatory diagnosis）. Eight of 85 patients （9.6%） died and the others were followed up as out-patients for 9.6 ± 3.5 mo. Demographic data, medical history, medication and stool frequency were similar in both groups （P 〉 0.05）. Seriously ill patients had less hematochezia than slightly ill patients （37.5% vs 86.9%, P = 0.000）. More tachycardia （45.4% vs 10.1%, P = 0.011） and a higher prevalence of peritonism signs （75% vs 5.7%, P = 0.000） were observed in the severe IC group while the presence and intensity of abdominal pain were similar between two groups. Two patients with severe IC had shock when admitted. Regarding analytical data, more seriously ill patients were found to have anemia and hyponatremia than the mildly ill patients （37.5% vs 10.1%, P = 0.014 and 46.6% vs 14.9%, P = 0.012, respectively）. To highlight the importance of small earthquakes in seismic hazard, a study of the 11 May 2016, Mw 4.9, Tesistan, Mexico earthquake is presented. Due to the close proximity of the event to the city, accelerations were considerably higher than those caused by historical severe earthquakes (6.0 < Mw < 8.2). This paper addresses two objectives related to the Tesistan event: the fi rst is to estimate the focal mechanism solution in order to place the event in the context of the tectonic environment of this area. The second is focused on a vulnerability evaluation of buildings that suff ered resonance. Several building′s typologies with variations in construction system and height are assessed in terms of resonance with the structural and soil periods. The results show that around the Zapopan station, strong damage is expected in intermediate to high-rise buildings (12-30 m) with moment resistant frame systems and in reinforced concrete shear walls. Masonry structures around this station may not present resonance. In contrast, in the surroundings of the Guadalajara station, all intermediate height buildings from 9 to 21 m may present resonance.

The liquid-phase partial oxidation of propane in the presence of the Fen+/H2O2 Fenton system at 70℃ and 1.4 atm on silica supported Nafion catalysts has been investigated. The reaction proceeds via a radical reaction path the efficiency of which is improved by silica-supported Nafion catalysts. Because of the direct relationship between reaction rate and concentration of sulphonic acid sites of Nafion catalysts, it is inferred that the active phase enahnces the kinetics of propane conversion by promoting the rate of active radicals generation.

Methotrexate induced sprue-like syndrome

A 52 year-old male patient diagnosed of ankylosing spon-dylitis presented with an iron deficiency anemia after a ten-month treatment of methotrexate. He did not respond to treatment with oral iron not a proton pump inhibitor and an upper endoscopy was performed. The histological study of the duodenal biopsies showed villus atrophy. After removing the methotrexate, administrating intra-muscular iron and undertaking a gluten-free diet, the histological and analytical alterations progressively resolved.

Non Perturbative Approach to the Time Evolution of a Simple Excited Coupled Quantum System in a Cavity

We consider a system modeled by a harmonic oscillator of frequency , coupled to the scalar potential inside a reflecting sphere of radius R. We use dressed states introduced originally in [1] and recently employed in [2] to present a non-perturbative unified description of the decay process of the system, in free space and in the case of the system being confined in a finite cavity. In the situation that we start from the initial condition that the system is in the first excited state, we give exact formulas to describe its time evolution for a cavity of arbitrary size. In the particular case of a very large cavity (free space), we recover the behaviour expected from perturbation theory in the limit of the small coupling constant. In the case of a very small cavity, our results are in good agreement with experimental observations

An assessment is offered regarding the progress made, and the remaining challenges, in the field of carbocatalysis. The fundamental principles that govern the preparation and performance of sp2-hybridized carbon materials in heterogeneous catalysis have been known for decades, and the level of understanding of key issues – especially the importance of textural and ion-exchange properties (i.e., surface area, pore size distribution, and proton transfer) – remains quite satisfactory. The opportunities for novel catalytic materials – especially graphene nanosheets and carbon nanotubes– are tremendous, especially when it comes to taking advantage of their structural order, such that electron transfer can be both better understood and controlled to enhance catalytic activity and selectivity.

Celecoxib enhances the detoxification of diethylnitrosamine in rat liver cancer

AIM： To study the effect of celecoxib （CXB） on diethylnitrosamine activation through the regulation of cytochrome P450 in a hepatocarcinogenesis ***： Six-week-old male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into five groups, a non-treated group （NT）, a diethylnitrosamine-treated group （DEN）, a DEN＋CXB-treated group （DEN＋CXB）,and CXB 8 d-treated and CXB 32 d-treated groups. The effects of celecoxib on the enzymatic activities of CYP1A1, 2A, 2B1/2, and 2E1 were assessed in hepatic microsomes 24 h after DEN *** in CYPIA1 and CYP2B1/2 protein expression were also evaluated. The rate of DEN metabolism was measured by the production of the deethylation metabolite acetaldehyde, and the denitrosation metabolite ***： DEN＋CXB administration produced a significant increase in the enzymatic activities ofCYP2B1/2 and 1A1, whereas it did not change the activities of CYP2A and 2E1, compared to that of the DEN group. CXB treatment for eight days did not produce a significant effect on enzymatic activity when compared to the NT group; however, when it was administered for prolonged times （CXB 32 d group）,the enzymatic activities were increased in a similar pattern to those in the DEN＋CXB group. The observed increase in the enzymatic activities in the DEN＋CXB group was accompanied by an increase in the CYP2B1/2 protein levels; no changes were observed in the levels of CYPIA1. In vitro, CXB increased the denitrosation of DEN, a pathway of metabolic detoxification. The addition of SKF-525A, a preferential inhibitor of CYP2B, abrogated the denitrosation of ***： These results suggest that the mechanism of action of CXB involves enhancement of the detoxification of DEN by an increasing denitrosation via CYP2B1/2.
