Protective effect of Ocimum sanctum Linn. leaf extract on ethanol withdrawal syndrome in Wistar rats

Objective: To evaluate the effects of Oscimum sanctum L(O. sanctum), an important medicinal herb, on alcohol withdrawal syndrome in Wistar rats. Methods: Liquid diet with 7.2%, v/v ethanol was administered to the rats for 21 d. Control group animals received sucrose as an isocaloric liquid diet. After alcohol withdrawal, rats were examined at 6 th and 24 th hour for major withdrawal signs that included anxiety and hyper locomotor activity. Ethanol withdrawal anxiety was tested using elevated plus maze, light and dark model; the hyper locomotor activity using actophotometer. O. sanctum leaf extract(100, 200 and 300 mg/kg, oral) and diazepam(2 mg/kg, i.p) were administered to the treatment group animals 30 min before alcohol withdrawal estimation. Drug treatment was also given 30 min before the second observation at 24 th hour. On the last day of the protocol, rats were sacrificed by cervical dislocation liver, kidney and brain were isolated and preserved in formalin for further histopathological examination. Results: Findings from the present study revealed that O. Sanctum leaf extract treatment at doses 100, 200 and 300 mg/kg, oral had a significant protective effect on signs and symptoms of ethanol withdrawal in alcohol-dependent rats. However, no remarkable pathological and microscopic alterations were observed in histopathological examination. Conclusions: O. sanctum seems to be an active drug for the treatment of alcohol abstinence syndrome.

Objective:To evaluate the antifertility activity of hydroalcoholic extract of Delonix regia(Boj.ex Hook.)Raf.leaves and seeds which are traditionally being used by Yanadi tribe to treat dysmenorrhea.Methods:Three experimental animal models,including anti-implantation,early abortifacient,and estrogenic activity in female rats,were used for evaluation of the antifertility activity of both extracts at two dose levels(250 and 500 mg/kg,orally).There were five groups in the anti-implantation and early abortifacient activity while six groups in estrogenic activity including the standard.The number of implants,resorptions,vaginal cornification,body weight,uterus weight,and biochemical parameters were measured.Results:At doses 250 and 500 mg/kg,the leaf extract was found to have strong anti-implantation action.The extract administered at the same doses also caused a significant rise in the number of resorptions,showing early abortifacient activity,increased uterine weight,and altered numerous biochemical parameters.Meanwhile,the seed extract only displayed slight anti-implantation activity at both levels.Conclusions:Based on these preliminary findings,we can conclude that the leaf extract outperformed the seed extract in terms of antifertility activity,exhibiting potent estrogenic,anti-implantation and early abortifacient activities in a dose-dependent manner.These findings are consistent with the literature study and corroborate to the antifertility activity of the plant.

Sex dimorphism and gene expression were studied in developing catkins in 159 F 2 individuals from the bioenergy crop Salix purpurea,and potential mechanisms and pathways for regulating sex development were explored.Differential expression,eQTL,bisulfite sequencing,and network analysis were used to characterize sex dimorphism,detect candidate master regulator genes,and identify pathways through which the sex determination region(SDR)may mediate sex dimorphism.Eleven genes are presented as candidates for master regulators of sex,supported by gene expression and network analyses.These include genes putatively involved in hormone signaling,epigenetic modification,and regulation of transcription.eQTL analysis revealed a suite of transcription factors and genes involved in secondary metabolism and floral development that were predicted to be under direct control of the sex determination region.Furthermore,data from bisulfite sequencing and small RNA sequencing revealed strong differences in expression between males and females that would implicate both of these processes in sex dimorphism pathways.These data indicate that the mechanism of sex determination in Salix purpurea is likely different from that observed in the related genus Populus.This further demonstrates the dynamic nature of SDRs in plants,which involves a multitude of mechanisms of sex determination and a high rate of turnover.

Comparison of two incisions for open reduction and internal fixation of mandibular body fractures: A randomised controlled clinical trial evaluating the surgical outcome

Purpose: The purpose of the study is to compare the surgical access and post-operative outcome of two intra-oral incisions used for approaching a mandibular body fracture. Methods: This clinical trial involved 60 patients with mandibular body fractures who were randomly allocated to control and study groups. The fractures were approached using the routine vestibular incision in the control group and crevicular incision with vertical release in the study group. The effects of incision design on the post-surgical outcome variables like swelling, trismus, paresthesia, wound healing and gingival recession were statistically analysed with non-parametric tests by using SPSS 22.0 software. Comparison of continuous variables between the groups and time points was done using Mann Whitney test and Friedman test respectively. Chi-square test was used to compare proportions between groups. Dunn's test with Bonferroni correction was used for pair wise comparisons. Results: The study group demonstrated favourable surgical outcome in the immediate postoperative phase as compared to the control group. The difference in mouth opening, swelling and neurosensory impairment between the two groups was found to be statistically significant (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Crevicular incision was found to be an ideal alternative to vestibular incision in achieving surgical access and fixation of mandibular body fractures with reduction in postoperative patient discomfort and better surgical outcome.

Direct numerical simulations of square particle sedimentation in a viscous incompressible fluid are presented to examine the effects of sharp edges for various particle-to-fluid density ratios and different initial inclination angles.The settling process exhibits four different motion regimes;non-oscillatory,non-uniform centered oscillatory,uniform off-centered oscillatory,and non-uniform off-centered(irregular)oscillatory.At moderate density ratios,we observe that the rotational motion of settling square particle varies with the initial inclination angle.We employ Dynamic Time Warping and Fast Fourier Transform to analyze translational and angular velocities.Oscillating systems are described using phase-space plots,and a chaotic phenomenon is observed at a higher density ratio.

Numerous experimental and theoretical observations have concluded that the probability of the three fragment emission(ternary fission)or binary fission increases when one proceeds towards the heavy mass region of nuclear periodic table.Many factors affect fragment emission,such as the shell effect,deformation,orientation,and fissility parameter.Binary and ternary fissions are observed for both ground and excited states of the nuclei.The collinear cluster tripartition(CCT)channel of the^(235)U(n^(th),f)reaction is studied,and we observe that the CCT may be a sequential or simultaneous emission phenomenon.To date,different approaches have been introduced to study the CCT process as a simultaneous or sequential process,but the decay dynamics of these modes have not been not fully explored.Identifying the three fragments of the sequential process and exploring their related dynamics using an excitation energy dependent approach would be of further interest.Hence,in this study,we investigate the sequential decay mechanism of the^(235)U(n^(th),f)reaction using quantum mechanical fragmentation theory(QMFT).The decay mechanism is considered in two steps,where initially,the nucleus splits into an asymmetric channel.In the second step,the heavy fragment obtained in the first step divides into two fragments.Stage I analysis is conducted by calculating the fragmentation potential and preformation probability for the spherical and deformed choices of the decaying fragments.The most probable fragment combination of stage I are identified with respect to the dips in the fragmentation structure and the corresponding maxima of the preformation probability(P0).The light fragments of the identified decay channels(obtained in step I)agree closely with the experimentally observed fragments.The excitation energy of the decay channel is calculated using an iteration process.The excitation energy is shared using an excitation energy dependent level density parameter.The obtained excitation energy of the identified heavy fragments is fur

Coaxial plasma guns are a type of plasma source that produces plasma which propagates radially and axially controlled by the shape of the ground electrode, which has attracted much interest in several applications. In this work, a 120° opening angle of CPG nozzle is used as a plasma gun configuration that operates at the energy of 150 J. The ionization of polyethylene insulator between the electrodes of the gun produces a cloud of hydrogen and carbon plasma.The triple Langmuir probe and Faraday cup are used to measure plasma density and plasma temperature. These methods are used to measure the on-axis and off-axis plasma divergence of the coaxial plasma gun. The peak values of ion densities measured at a distance of 25 mm on-axis from the plasma gun are(1.6±0.5)×10^(19)m^(-3)and(2.8±0.6)×10^(19)m^(-3)for hydrogen and carbon plasma respectively and the peak temperature is 3.02±0.5 eV. The mean propagation velocity of plasma is calculated using the transit times of plasma at different distances from the plasma gun and is found to be 4.54±0.25 cm/μs and 1.81±0.18 cm/μs for hydrogen and carbon plasma respectively. The Debye radius is obtained from the measured experimental data that satisfies the thin sheath approximation. The shot-to-shot stability of plasma parameters facilitates the use of plasma guns in laboratory experiments. These types of plasma sources can be used in many applications like plasma opening switches, plasma devices, and as plasma sources.

Network Intrusion Detection Systems(NIDS)are utilized to find hostile network connections.This can be accom-plished by looking at traffic network activity,but it takes a lot of work.The NIDS heavily utilizes approaches for data extraction and machine learning to find anomalies.In terms of feature selection,NIDS is far more effective.This is accurate since anomaly identification uses a number of time-consuming features.Because of this,the feature selec-tion method influences how long it takes to analyze movement patterns and how clear it is.The goal of the study is to provide NIDS with an attribute selection approach.PSO has been used for that purpose.The Network Intrusion Detection System that is being developed will be able to identify any malicious activity in the network or any unusual behavior in the network,allowing the identification of the illegal activities and safeguarding the enormous amounts of confidential data belonging to the customers from being compromised.In the research,datasets were produced utilising both a network infrastructure and a simulation network.Wireshark is used to gather data packets whereas Cisco Packet Tracer is used to build a network in a simulated environment.Additionally,a physical network consisting of six node MCUs connected to a laptop and a mobile hotspot,has been built and communication packets are being recorded using the Wireshark tool.To train several machine learning models,all the datasets that were gatheredcre-ated datasets from our own studies as well as some common datasets like NSDL and UNSW acquired from Kaggle-were employed.Additionally,PsO,which is an optimization method,has been used with these ML algorithms for feature selection.In the research,KNN,decision trees,and ANN have all been combined with PSO for a specific case study.And it was found demonstrated the classification methods PSO+ANN outperformed PSO+KNN and PSO+DT in this case study.
