Introducing a multi-criteria indicator to better evaluate impacts of rare earth materials production and consumption in life cycle assessment

Life cycle assessment （LCA） is based on the basic principles of sustainable development. LCA method demonstrated its efficiency in providing a systematic environmental assessment approach of a product or a process. The effectiveness and efficiency of these methods lies in the fact that they take into account all life cycle stages of a product, from the extraction of raw materials to end of life treatment （recycling, ...） through an assessment covering different impact categories such as climate change, human health, ecosystems and resources. Existing LCA indicators reflect different issues surrounding resource depletion, creating inconsistency and moreover confusion among LCA practitioners. The evaluation of different life cycle impacts assessment （LCIA） methods done by EC JRC showed that available models did not address the same parameters： short- vs long-term, stock vs backup technology, etc. It also showed that if the correlation between the methods was sufficient for some resources, others such as rare earth elements showed a high level of inconsistency between methods. It was therefore necessary to develop a relevant indicator and harmonized assessment of impacts on resources in LCA. Furthermore, a resource strategy indicator based on the three pillars of sustainable development （eco- nomic, environmental and social） would better address wider challenges and making it a more powerful decision making tool. This study aimed to introduce an indicator for evaluating the strategy implications of metal resources for products and to compare different ways of production resulting from extraction of raw materials or recycling, with a special focus on rare earth materials. The indicator would assess the impacts based on a reserve-resource vision [BGS NERC] and the evolution over time and founded over three pa- rameters： technical feasibility, economic viability and political stability （including social and environmental aspects） in representing countries.

Influence of particle contact models on soil response of poorly graded sand during cavity expansion in discrete element simulation

The discrete element method(DEM) has been extensively adopted to investigate many complex geotechnical related problems due to its capability to incorporate the discontinuous nature of granular materials. In particular, when simulating large deformations or distortion of soil(e.g. cavity expansion),DEM can be very effective as other numerical solutions may experience convergence problems. Cavity expansion theory has widespread applications in geotechnical engineering, particularly to the problems concerning in situ testing, pile installation and so forth. In addition, the behaviour of geomaterials in a macro-level is utterly determined by microscopic properties, highlighting the importance of contact models. Despite the fact that there are numerous contact models proposed to mimic the realistic behaviour of granular materials, there are lack of studies on the effects of these contact models on the soil ***, in this study, a series of three-dimensional numerical simulations with different contact constitutive models was conducted to simulate the response of sandy soils during cylindrical cavity expansion. In this numerical investigation, three contact models, i.e. linear contact model, rolling resistance contact model,and Hertz contact model, are considered. It should be noted that the former two models are linear based models, providing linearly elastic and frictional plasticity behaviours, whereas the latter one consists of nonlinear formulation based on an approximation of the theory of Mindlin and Deresiewicz. To examine the effects of these contact models, several cylindrical cavities were created and expanded gradually from an initial radius of 0.055 m to a final radius of 0.1 m. The numerical predictions confirm that the calibrated contact models produced similar results regarding the variations of cavity pressure, radial stress, deviatoric stress, volumetric strain, as well as the soil radial displacement. Enhanced oil recovery by nonionic surfactants considering micellization, surface, and foaming properties

Surfactants for enhanced oil recovery are important to study due to their special characteristics like foam generation,lowering interfacial tension between oleic and aqueous phases,and wettability alteration of reservoir rock *** is a good mobility control agent in enhanced oil recovery for improving the mobility *** the present work,the foaming behavior of three nonionic ethoxylated surfactants,namely Tergitol 15-S-7,Tergitol 15-S-9,and Tergitol 15-S-12,was studied *** the surfactants,Tergitol 15-S-12 shows the highest *** effect of Na Cl concentration and synthetic seawater on foaming behavior of the surfactants was investigated by the test-tube shaking *** critical micelle concentrations of aqueous solutions of the different nonionic surfactants were measured at 300 *** was found that the critical micelle concentrations of all surfactants also increased with increasing ethylene oxide *** light scattering experiments were performed to investigate the micelle sizes of the surfactants at their respective critical micelle *** flooding experiments were carried out in sand packs using the surfactant *** was found tha t22% additional oil was recovered in the case of all the surfactants over secondary water *** 15-S-12exhibited the maximum additional oil recovery which is more than 26%after water injection.

A comparative study between gravel and rubber drainage columns for mitigation of liquefaction hazards

Liquefaction is one of the most destructive natural hazards that cause damage to engineering structures during an earthquake. This study aims to examine the effect of rubber and gravel drainage columns on the reduction of liquefaction potential of saturated sandy soils using a shaking table. Experiments were carried out in various conditions such as construction materials, different arrangements and diameters of drainage columns. Effects of the relative density and the input motion on the base test were investigated as well. The results demonstrate that rubber drainage columns have slightly better performance compared to gravel drainage columns at high relative density and high input acceleration. Soil improvement using gravel drainage columns, which leads to reduction in liquefaction effects at moderate input acceleration and low relative density, is a more effective method than that using rubber drainage columns. By increasing the number and diameter of gravel and rubber drainage columns, deformations due to liquefaction are reduced. The drainage rate of gravel drains is higher than that of rubber drains after shaking. Totally, the outcomes indicate that densification is the most important factor controlling liquefaction.

The present work has focused on the modification of multiwalled carbon nanotube with a ligand,l-（2-pyridylazo）-2-naphthol, and its potential application for the development of a new,simple and selective modified glassy carbon electrode for stripping voltammetric determination of Cd（Ⅱ）.The analytical curve for Cd（Ⅱ） ions covered the linear range varying from 0.8 up to 220.4μgL^（-1）.The limit of detection was found to be 0.1μgL^（-1）,while the relative standard deviation（RSD） at 50.0μgL^（-1） was 1.8%（n=5）.This modified electrode was successfully applied for determination of Cd（Ⅱ） in some water samples.

Chemical constituents and fumigant toxicity of essential oil from Carum copticum against two stored product beetles

Plant secondary metabolites play an important role in plant-insect interactions and therefore such compounds may have insecticidal or antifeedant activity against insects. Carum copticum C. B. Clarke （Apiaceae） is one of these plants that have medicinal effects on humans. The chemical composition of the essential oil from dry seeds of C. copticum was studied by gas chromatography （GC） and gas chromatography mass spectrometry （GC-MS）. Thymol （41.34%）,α-terpinolene （17.46%） and ρ-cymene （11.76%） were found to be the major constituents of the oil. In fumigant toxicity tests with the essential oil against adults of Sitophilus oryzae （L.） and Tribolium castaneum （Herbst） at 27 ±1℃ and 60% ± 5% RH, it was observed that S. oryzae （LC50 = 0.91 μL/L） were significantly susceptible than T. castaneum （LC50 = 33.14 μL/L）. The mortalities of the insect species reached 100% at concentrations higher than 185.2 μL/L and 12-h exposure time. The findings indicate the strong insecticidal activity of C. copticum oil and its potential role as a fumigant for storedproduct insects.

Mine production index(MPI)-extension of OEE for bottleneck detection in mining

Although mining production depends on various equipments, significant amount of production loss can be attributed a specific equipment or fleet. Bottleneck is defined not only by production loss but also by our satisfaction from the equipment. The user satisfaction could be measured as machine *** literatures on performance improvement and optimization of equipment operations assert importance of availability, utilization and production performance as key parameters. These three parameters are useful for evaluating effectiveness of equipment. Mine production index(MPI), which can represent the effect of these factors, has been applied for continuous operation in mining. MPI uses Fuzzy Delphi Analytical Hierarchy Process to determine importance of each three parameter for individual equipment. A case study in a Swedish open pit mine was done to evaluate the field application of *** results reveal that crusher is the bottleneck equipment in studied mine. As a methodical approach,an algorithm which uses MPI and detects bottleneck in continuous mining operation has been proposed.

Investigations on the relationship among the porosity,permeability and pore throat size of transition zone samples in carbonate reservoirs using multiple regression analysis,artificial neural network and adaptive neuro-fuzzy interface system

Finding an accurate method for estimating permeability aside from well logs has been a difficult task for many *** most commonly used methods targeted towards regression technique to understand the correlation between pore throat radii,porosity and permeability are Winland and Pittman equation *** these methods are very common among petrophysicists,they do not give a good prediction in certain ***,this paper investigates the relationship among porosity,permeability,and pore throat radii using three methods such as multiple regression analysis,artificial neural network(ANN),and adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system(ANFIS)for application in transition zone permeability ***,a comprehensive mercury injection capillary pressure(MICP)test was conducted using 228 transition zone carbonate core samples from a field located in the Middle-East *** regression analysis was later performed to estimate the permeability using pore throat and porosity *** the ANN,a two-layer feed-forward neural network with sigmoid hidden neurons and a linear output neuron was *** technique involves training,validation,and testing of input/output ***,for the ANFIS method,a hybrid optimization consisting of least-square and backpropagation gradient descent methods with a subtractive clustering technique was *** ANFIS combines both the artificial neural network and fuzzy logic inference system(FIS)for the training,validation,and testing of input/output *** results show that the best correlation for the multiple regression technique is achieved for pore throat radii with 35%mercury saturation(R35).However,for both the ANN and ANFIS techniques,pore throat radii with 55%mercury saturation(R55)gives the best *** the ANN and ANFIS are later found to be more effective and efficient and thus recommended as compared with the multiple regression technique commonly used in the industry.

Synthesis,characterization and antioxidant activities of highly functionahzed cyclopentadienes catalyzed by ZnO-nanorod as economic and efficient heterogeneous nano catalyst

A three-component condensation was applied for the preparation of cyclopentadiene derivatives through the reaction of primary amines,alkyl propiolate and dialkyl acetylenedicarboxylate in the presence of catalytic amount of ZnO-nanorods（Zn-NR） under solvent-free conditions at 50 ℃.The method has proved to be synthetically green,simple,and effective with high atom economy and *** catalyst also revealed significant ***,the antioxidant activity and free radical scavenging capacity of the newly synthesized derivatives 4a,4b,4c,and 4d was screened using free radical scavenging 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl（DPPH） and ferric reducing antioxidant power（FRAP）assays and compared with hydroxytoluene（BHT） and tert-butylhydroquinone（TBHQ）.These compounds do not exhibit good DPPH radical scavenging,but they have a desirable FRAP.
