Objective:To evaluate the hepatocurative effects of aqueous root bark,stem bark and leaves of Vitex doniana in carbon tetrachloride(CCl_4)induced liver damage and non induced liver damage albino ***:A total of 60 albino rats(36 induced liver damage and 24 non induced liver damage)were assigned into liver damage and non liver damage groups of 6 rats in a *** animals in the CCl_4 induced liver damage groups,were induced by intraperitoneal injection with a single dose of CCl_4(1 mL/kg body weight)as a 1:1(v/v)solution in olive oil and were fasted for 36 h before the subsequent treatment with aqueous root bark,stem bark and leaves extracts of Vitex doniana and vitamin E as standard drug(100 mg/kg body weight per day)for 21 d,while the animals in the non induced groups were only treated with the daily oral administration of these extracts at the same *** administration of CCl_4 was done once a week for a period of 3 ***:There was significant(P<0.05)increase in concentration of all liver marker enzymes,alanine aminotransferase,aspartate aminotransferase and alkaline aminotransferase(ALT,AST and ALP)and significant(P<0.05)decrease in albumin in the CCl_4 induced liver damage control when compared to the normal *** extracts caused a significant(P<0.05)reduction in the serum activities of liver marker enzymes(ALT,AST and ALP)and a significant(P<0.05)increase in albumin of all the induced treated *** stem bark extract and vitamin E significantly(P<0.05)increased total *** the extracts significantly(P<0.05)lowered serum creatinine whereas only root bark extract significantly(P<0.05)lowered serum level of urea in the rats with CCl_4 induced liver ***:Hepatocurative study shows that all the plant parts(root bark,stem bark and leaves)possess significant hepatocurative properties among other therapeutic values justifying their use in folklore medicine.

First principle calculation within the Density Functional Theory (DFT) and Density Functional Perturbation Theory (DFPT) using Local Density Approximation as implemented in Quantum ESPRESSO has been significantly used to investigate the structural and Piezoelectric, properties of Perovskite ZrTi(PbO3)2. From structural properties calculation, the ground state total energy of -2417.12 eV has been obtained which led to an equilibrium lattice constant of a= 5.620Åfor ZrTi(PbO3)2. Our obtained optimized atomic positions and atomic effective charge shows that the optimized ZrTi(PbO3)2 is stable and the Piezoelectric stress tensor is calculated using Berry-phase approach within density functional perturbation theory (DFPT). From our calculation, we have obtained the stress tensor elements with values of d1,5 = 6.81, d3,1 = 1.69, and d3,3 = 6.18, which is in agreement with the values obtained for tetragonal PbTiO3.

Antibiotics are indispensable to maintaining human health, however, their overuse has resulted in resistant organisms which present a significantly higher burden to the low to middle income countries, due to the high incidence of communicable diseases. Insufficient antimicrobial-related training for physicians during their undergraduate education could have a negative impact on their prescribing. This study assessed the knowledge, attitudes and practices of antibiotic use and antimicrobial resistance among medical students in a private university in Dominica, a resource-limited country, in order to facilitate more effective education of these future prescribers. A cross-sectional study was undertaken with the medical students from February 2021 to April 2021 using a 36-item questionnaire. Data analysis was achieved using descriptive statistics. A total of 85 students participated in the study, majority (70%) were female, African, aged 23.8 ± 4.6 years and single. Between 64 and 99% of the respondents reported no risk factors for communicable diseases and demonstrated a low to moderate (10% - 40%) negative response to knowledge-related questions. The majority (70%) of the respondents who had used antibiotics in the past 12 months reported efficacy and limited side-effects, but confirmed lack of knowledge about the classes of antibiotics prescribed to them. Almost half of the medical students (48%) reported having abused antibiotics, while about a third (35%) of the respondents reported sharing antibiotics with friends or loved ones in the past. There was no significant association between age, gender, and the medical students’ knowledge of antibiotic resistance (p > 0.05). However, they reported that they would like more education on antimicrobial use and resistance. Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a major pathogen causing infections resulting in severe morbidity and mortality worldwide. To date, the true nature and extent of MRSA infections in the Caribbean are not well understood. This is a review of the limited studies in the Caribbean describing the prevalence, epidemiology, and molecular characteristics of MRSA in hospitalized and non-hospitalized patients. Relevant articles were searched and extracted from PubMed and Mendeley and a narrative review of the findings was constructed. An aggregate of 24 articles, from 1999 to 2020, was found from 10 of 27 countries. Majority of the studies were from Trinidad and Tobago (29%) and Jamaica (21%) while 50% were from Barbados, Dominican Republic, Martinique, Haiti, Cuba, St. Kits & Nevis, Guadeloupe, and Guyana. Approximately 75% of investigations were conducted on hospitalized patients versus 20% on outpatients. The data revealed geographical differences in the prevalence of MRSA within the Caribbean;20% - 100% of Staphylococcus aureus clinical isolates from hospitalized patients and outpatients were resistant to methicillin, macrolides, and fluoroquinolones, but susceptible to several non-beta lactam antibiotics, due to the widespread occurrence of CA-MRSA clone ST8 SCCmec IV, PVL positive. There was moderate prevalence of ST72 SCCmec V (14% - 25%) in both hospital and community settings in a few of the countries while ST30 SCCmec IV, PVL positive, was moderately prevalent (27%) only in Dominican Republic. Also, there was moderate prevalence of HA-MRSA ST5 SCCmec II (18%) in community settings in the Dominican Republic and Martinique, but high prevalence of HA-MRSA ST239 SCCmec III (60%) in hospitalized patients in Cuba and Trinidad & Tobago. Anatomy, a foremost basic medical science (BMS) has evolved in content and context, while remaining the most fundamental BMS subject. Stakeholders have continually made efforts especially in recent time to achieve an evolution of this subject. The primary aim of this work was to study the perceptions and experiences of Anatomists towards contributing to programme and career advancements. Following ethical approval, structured questionnaire was administered to Nigerian anatomists using a Google form. It is a total population study. The questionnaire had 13 sections, with each section addressing a theme that was integral to the subject of research interest. The last section collected free responses as qualitative information. After indicating informed consent, 106 anatomists properly completed and returned the questionnaires. Statistical and quantitative analyses of results were done. The most popular field amongst respondents was Neuroscience (60.9%);followed by Histology or Microscopic Anatomy (53.6%), Embryology or developmental anatomy (35.5%), Gross anatomy (34.5%) and Histochemistry (30.9%). About half of Nigerian anatomists involved in the study had a PhD degree. Training emphasized the cognitive domains the most. Consequently, emphasis should be laid on the psychomotor (skills) and the affective domain (attitude) to improve capacity, competences, and the job prospects of trainees. The consensus was that the programme trained students and prepared graduates as medical educators, scientists, and researchers. Anatomy has significant potential to contribute to development with proper programme design, emphasis on research, teaching and applied services competencies, effective policy formulation and implementation and adherence to best practices.

An Inventory of the Geological, Biological and Cultural Resources on Ufe-Oke Hill, Idanre, Southwestern Nigeria

Idanre, which represents a unique topographical landscape within southwestern Nigeria, is being proposed to the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) for designation as a world heritage site. In line with this, we conducted a survey to document the rich geological, biological and cultural resources contained within the Ufe-Oke section of Idanre Hills. Our geological inventory revealed two major rock types, older porphyritic granite and fine grained granite, in addition to other minerals. We identified insects belonging to 174 species while fishes from 4 species were collected. Mammals belonging to 13 species were identified through trapping, sightings and signs, although an even greater variety was inferred from interviews with hunters and visits to local fetish markets. Patterns concerning how these biological taxa are distributed altitudinally along Ufe-Oke Hill are discussed. In addition, in the quarters within Ufe-Oke representing the ancient city of Idanre, we characterized about 200 pieces of anthropological material, which included pottery shards, beads, chinaware, brass bangles and ancient metal coins. We also identified various other major features of archeological interest. Finally we offer recommendations, in the light of our findings, concerning how the variety of resources catalogued in this study can be effectively harnessed while sus-taining at the same time the environmental integrity of this site, which offers the greatest opportunities and potential for tourism.

Tropical regions across the globe are characterized by an annually prolonged hot weather conditions that showcase limiting production efficiency in livestock industry, as domesticated animals leave the zone of maximum comfort, under heat stress, with death and reduced carcass yield accompanying the subsequent alteration in body chemistry and behavior. However, pen house orientation, cooling systems, genetic modification and different dietary manipulations have been employed in poultry industry, but many of such did not account for the body’s acid-base equilibrium and the potentials of aggregate levels of dietary electrolytes in enhancing carcass yield of broilers under severe heat stress conditions. Therefore, this study was conducted to investigate the effects of different electrolyte-balanced diets on overall performance, carcass yield, meat safety potentials and economic value of heat-stressed broilers reared for five weeks. Arbor Acre broiler chicks (n = 300) were randomly allotted to diets with aggregate electrolyte balance of 210 (T1), 240 (T2), 270 (T3), 300 (T4), 330 (T5) and 360 (T6) mEq/Kg, in a completely randomised design. On day 35, birds whose weights were closest to the mean class weight were selected from each replicate pen for carcass yield assessment. Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) patients on Antiretroviral Therapy (ART) have shown impressive improvement and death rates have drastically reduced, even though complications still exist. This research carried out a baseline study to determine the nutritional interplay between HIV-drugs and kidney, liver, and heart indices among subjects undergoing HIV treatment and attending the Medical Out-Patient Department of a Federal Medical Center in the North-Eastern part of Nigeria, using a sample size of 50 individuals both male and female, who have been shown to be HIV positive and have been on ART for over 12 months.
