Thermochemical co-conversion of biomass-plastic waste to biochar:a review

Physicochemical Properties of the Seed oil of Khaya senegalensis

The physicochemical characteristics of Khaya senegalensis seed oil were investigated. Iodine value, saponification value, percentage free fatty acid (FFA), acid value, and peroxide value were the chemical parameters examined in the oil analysis, while specific gravity and refractive index were examined as physical parameters. The results showed that the acid value was 1.18 ± 0.01, the saponification value was 191.76 ± 0.01 mgKoH/gm, and the iodine value was 102.79 ± 0.01. It contained 0.59 ± 0.01 percent free fatty acid. The value of peroxide was 6.83 ± 0.01 meq/kg. The results showed that the refractive index was 1.462 ± 0.02 and the specific gravity was 0.9194 ± 0.04. The established parameters fell within the worldwide and Nigerian vegetable oil industry standards.

Impact of Relative Dose Intensity (RDI) on Survival in Non-Metastatic Breast Cancer: Nigerian Experience

Background: This study was initiated to determine practices patterns in adjuvant chemotherapy for non-metastatic breast cancer and to examine the relationship between received dose intensity (RDI) and survival in patients with breast cancer Nigeria. Methods: our study was a retrospective analysis of patients with breast cancer recruited from 2012 and 2015. A total of 204 patients were initially entered into the study, 102 were lost to follow-up leaving 102 patients who were suitable for the survival analysis. Survival time was calculated from 106 days, the scheduled end of chemotherapy. Results: The total average RDI for patients was 74%. over the 204 patients that were reviewed, 144 (70.6%) had some reduction of RDI. This subgroup had an average RDI of 63%. on average, 79% of the intended dose of chemotherapy was given. The time to completion of chemotherapy was 1.33 times that specified by the protocol. Dose delays an overall reduction was mainly attributed to intolerability and financial constraints. Survival by RDI showed a significant decrease in survival rate for patients with RDI of >49% (Hazard Ratio = 3.473, 95% CI 1.21 - 9.91, P = 0.020);RDI of 50% - 59% (Hazard Ratio = 3.916, 95% CI 1.01 - 15.18, P = 0.048);RDI of 60% - 69% (Hazard Ratio = 4.462, 95% CI 1.65 - 12.03, P = 0.003) compared with patients who received an RDI of 100%. Although associated with poorer prognosis, there were no significant changes in the survival rate for patients with RDI of 70% - 79% (Hazard Ratio = 1.667, 95% CI 0.56 - 4.96, P = 0.359);RDI of 80% - 89% (Hazard Ratio = 1.620, 95% CI 0.47 - 5.53, P = 0.441);RDI 90% - 99% (Hazard Ratio = 1.590, 95% CI 0.53 - 4.73, P = 0.405) compared with patients who received an RDI of 100%. Conclusion: This study provides evidence that decreased RDI of on-metastatic breast cancer patients is strongly associated with decreased overall survival.

Modeling microwave drying kinetics and moisture diffusivity of Mabonde banana variety

This study investigates the microwave drying kinetics of thin layer Mabonde banana variety(MBV)at power levels between 100 and 300 *** mathematical drying models:Wang and Singh,Verma,Two-term,Page,Two term exponential,and logarithmic models were fitted to experimental drying data obtained from the *** statistical consistency of the models was determined using statistical parameters including coefficient of determination,mean bias error,root mean square error,and reduced Chi *** migration from banana slices was described using the Fick’s diffusion *** effective diffusivity was *** results indicated that drying took place largely in the falling rate *** time required to reduce the moisture of banana to a certain level was dependent on the microwave output,being the longest at 100 W and shortest at 300 *** effective moisture diffusivity increased with increasing microwave power with values at 4.89×10^(-10),1.09×10^(-9) and 1.69×10^(-9) m^(2)/s at 100,200,and 300 W,*** Wang and Singh model gave the best results for the description of thin layer drying of MBV.

Differential degradation of crude oil (Bonny light) by four Pseudomonas strains

Four hydrocarbon degraders isolated from enriched oil- and asphalt-contaminated soils in lagos, Nigeria, were tested for their petroleum degradation potentials. All the isolates were identified as species of Pseudomonas. Pseudomonas putida P 11 demonstrated a strong ability to degrade kerosene, gasoline, diesel, engine oil and crude oil while P. aeruginosa BB3 exhibited fair degradative ability on crude oil, gasoline, engine oil, anthracene and pyrene but weak on kerosene, diesel and dibenzothiophene. Pseudomonas putida Wl2 and P. aeruginosa MVl1 grew on crude oil and all its cuts tested with the latter possessing similar polycyclic aromatic potentials as P11. All the strains grew logarithmically with 1-2 orders of magnitude and with generation time ranging significantly between 3.07 and 8.55 d at 0.05 level of confidence. Strains Wl2 and MVl1 utilized the oil substrate best with more than 70% in 6 d experimental period, whereas the same feat was achieved by P11 in 12 d period. BB3 on the other hand degraded only 46% within 6 d. Interestingly, data obtained from gas chromatographic analysis of oil recovered from the culture fluids of MVl1 confirmed near-disappearance of major peaks （including aliphatics and aromatics） in the hydrocarbon mixture.

Synthesis of spinel ferrite and its role in the removal of free fatty acids from deteriorated vegetable oil

Deterioration and loss of quality of vegetable oil is a big challenge in the food *** study investigated the synthesis of nickel ferrite(Ni Fe_(2)_(o4))via co-precipitation method and its use for the removal of free fatty acids(FFAs)in deteriorated vegetable *** Fe2 o4 was characterized using Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy(FTIR),X-ray diffraction(XRD),thermogravimetric(TG)analysis,Brunauer–Emm ett–Teller(BET)surface area,transmission electron microscopy(TEM),scanning electron microscopy(SEM)and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy(EDX).Synthesis of Ni Fe_(2)_(o4)was confirmed by characterization,which revealed a BET surface area of 16.30 m^(2)·g^(-1)and crystallite size of 29 *** Fe_(2)_(o4)exhibited an adsorption capacity of 145.20 l·kg^(-1)towards FFAs with an 80.69%removal in a process,which obeys langmuir isotherm and can be described by the pseudo-second-order kinetic *** process has enthalpy(DH)of 11.251 k Jámolà1 and entropy(DS)of 0.038 k J·mol^(-1)K^(-1)with negative free energy change(DG),which suggests the process to be spontaneous and *** quantum chemical computation analysis via density functional theory further revealed the sorption mechanism of FFAs by Ni Fe_(2)_(o4)occurred via donor–acceptor interaction,which may be described by the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital(lUMo)and the highest occupied molecular orbital(HoMo).The study showed Ni Fe_(2)_(o4)to be a potential means that can remove FFAs from deteriorated vegetable oil.
