Reaction of nitrous oxide with methane to synthesis gas:A thermodynamic and catalytic study

The aim of the present study is to explore the coherence of thermodynamic equilibrium predictions with the actual catalytic reaction of CH4 with N2O,particularly at higher CH4 *** this purpose,key process variables,such as temperature(300℃-550℃) and a molar feed ratio(N2O/CH4 = 1,3,and 5),were altered to establish the conditions for maximized *** experimental study was conducted over the Co-ZSM-5 catalyst in a fixed bed tubular reactor and then compared with the thermodynamic equilibrium compositions,where the equilibrium composition was calculated via total Gibbs free energy minimization *** results suggest that molar feed ratio plays an important role in the overall reaction products *** for N2O conversions,and irrespective of N2O/CH4feed ratio,the thermodynamic predictions coincide with experimental data obtained at approximately 475℃-550℃,indicating that the reactions are kinetically limited at lower range of *** example,theoretical calculations show that the H2 yield is zero in presence of excess N2O(N2O/CH4= 5).However over a Co-ZSM-5 catalyst,and with a same molar feed ratio(N2O/CH4) of 5,the H2yield is initially 10%at 425℃,while above450℃ it drops to ***,H2yield steadily increases with temperature and with the level of CH4 conversion for reactions limited by N2O concentration in a reactant *** maximum attainable(from thermodynamic calculations and at a feed ratio of N2O/CH4=3) H2yield at 550℃ is 38%,whereas at same temperature and over Co-ZSM-5,the experimentally observed yield is about 19%.Carbon deposition on Co-ZSM-5 at lower temperatures and CH4 conversion(less than 50%) was also *** higher temperatures and levels of CH4conversion(above 90%),the deposited carbon is suggested to react with N2O to form CO2.

Post-occupancy evaluation of residential satisfaction in Lasos, Niseria： Feedback for residential improvement

This study is a post-occupancy evaluation of residential satisfaction in Oniru Estate, Lagos, Nigeria. It conceived residents＇ satisfaction as a measure of people＇s attitudes towards certain aspects of their residential environment. The very important role of certain physical quality or characteristics of the environment as a dominant predictor of satisfaction is emphasized. Apart from the measurement of residential satisfaction through post-occupancy evaluation, it also utilized respondents＇ satisfaction scores as indices for evaluating the performance of residential development in the study area. Analysis was done using Chi-square statistics （p=0.05 with a level of significance of 0.000） to confirm the relationship between the quality of housing physical environment and level of residents＇ satisfaction. The results show and confirm that the quality of certain physical characteristics in the housing environment is imperative thereby influencing the level of residents＇ housing satisfaction. The need to consider relevant inputs emanating from the end-users or occupants of residential developments in the planning, design and development of satisfactory dweltlings is highlighted.

Aspects of Transitivity in Select Social Transformation Discourse in Nigeria

This article examines transitivity in the mediatised discourse of social transformation in *** for the study comprises texts on aspects of social transformation campaigns in Nigeria in the context of democracy,anti-corruption crusades,insecurity,and domestic *** data was drawn from speeches,radio commentaries,jingles,printed texts,interviews,tweets,and online newspaper comments about government actors and non-government actors covering the period between March 2013 to March *** five-year span was informed by a wide gamut of negative realities in the nation which led to increased mediatisation of social transformation *** analysis of data is hinged on the transitivity system espoused in Halliday’s systemic functional linguistics and critical discourse analysis by Fairclough(1989;revised 2015)and Machin and Mayr(2012).Data analysis revealed that the different participants in the discourse deployed material processes,relational processes,and mental processes to negotiate the social transformation challenge and agenda in *** presentation of the agents in relation to the processes in the discourse reflected positive in-group representation and negative-other representation for legitimation and *** study concludes that transitivity is a veritable tool in the discourse that primarily serves in foregrounding social problems in Nigeria while also affording social participation.

Significance of house-type as a determinanl of residential quality in Osogbo, Southwest Nigeria

This study investigates the effect of house-types on the assessment of residential quality in Osogbo, Nigeria. Through a questionnaire survey, this study employs a stratified systematic sampling method to select 406 （10%） households from three （3） major residential districts of Osogbo. Data are analyzed using descriptive statistics and one-way analysis of variance （ANOVA）. The study showed that 80% and 14.8% of the respondents live in contemporary vernacular houses, that is, the ＂face-me-i-face-you＂ house, and western apartment houses, respectively. Meanwhile 2.5%, 1.5%, and 1.2% of the respondents live in duplexes, single family houses, and traditional courtyard dwellings, respectively. This result suggests that in Osogbo, the Yoruba traditional courtyard house-type is gradually being replaced by the contemporary vernacular house and the western apartment house-type. Confirming the linear relationship and level of significance among the variables, the ANOVA Test F-value is 2.17 （where p〈0.05 probability level）, which indicates that house-type significantly affects the assessment of residential quality in Osogbo. The need for the government and others involved in housing delivep/to consider the appropriate house-types for and residential preferences of end-users within different sub-cultures when planning for future housing in Nigeria is highlighted.

Effect of Low Gamma Irradiation on the Germination and Morphological Characteristics of Broad Beans (Vicia faba L.), Mung Beans (Vigna radiata L.), and Peas (Pisum sativum L.) Seedlings

Understanding the effects of ionising radiation (IR) on plants has been a major focus of research. Acute high-dose effects are well-documented and understood (mainly through laboratory testing). Lower doses, on the other hand, are less understood, as low dosage research is controversial, and there are only a few studies that use low and ecologically relevant IR levels, particularly those conducted under controlled conditions. The effect of low gamma radiation was investigated in this study using Vicia faba L., Vigna radiata L., and Pisum sativum L. Healthy and viable seeds of these plants were irradiated with varying doses of gamma radiation (Cs−137 source) and sown under controlled environmental conditions. The doses/dose rates used were within the scope of the International Commission on Radiological Protection’s Derived Consideration Reference Level (DCRL) for these groups of plants (1 - 10 mGy∙d−1), so this study tested this DCRL. Observations were made on certain germination parameters and growth traits like germination percentage and rate, shoot and root length, seed weight, number of leaves, wet and dry biomass, plant height, leaf chlorophyll content, and leaf area. In the germination phase, the doses employed in this experiment did not affect the seeds’ weight, germination percentage, and rate, but there were some interesting effects on the root and shoot length;as all irradiated groups performed better than the control group (particularly the 16.2 mGy and 48.5 mGy dose in V. radiata and P. sativum, while the 1070 mGy dose had the highest value in V. faba). However, the plants were able to compensate for the effects observed in the germination phase and by the end of the experiment, there were no statistically significant effects (at 0.05 p level) in all the morphometric parameters studied;the visible organs appeared normal, and growth rate was normal. Design, Development and Test of a Small Scale Mango Juice Extractor

Mango fruit （Mangifera indica） is very rich in fibre and vitamin C which are the required nutrients for good health and easy digestion of food in human body system. However, the fruit is highly perishable in its natural state after harvest due to the chemical deterioration and environmental effects. Due to the perishable nature, abundant wastage during the production season and relative scarcity during the off season were recorded by farmers. Processing the fruit into the form that can easily be stored, preserved, packaged, transported or consumed is crucial to having the product all the year round. Besides, mango juice can be consumed freshly, processed into dry powder, mixed or blended with other juice to make fruit jams, or evaporated to concentrates. These products have a lot of potential in food and beverage industries for export and foreign exchange earnings. Therefore, a small scale machine to process mango fruits to high quality juice is highly essential to reduce the postharvest loss and then add value to the commodity. To achieve this purpose, an abrasion-macerating device （AMD） was designed, fabricated and tested for small scale mango juice extraction. Design considerations focused on the techno-economic status of the micro and small scale fruit juice processors who are the intended users of the machine. The major components of the machine included hopper, perforated drum, screw conveyor, juice outlet, waste outlet, frame, electric motor and motor stand. Other components included screw shaft, the juice collector, top cover and the transmission system. In operation, the screw conveyor conveys and presses the mango fruits against the perforated roughened drum. The abrasion/tearing process of the screw on the flesh of the fruit and further pressing against the drum squeeze enough juice out of the fruit. The juice extracted is drained through the perforated mesh of the juice channel into the juice outlet from where it is collected while the residual waste is

Seasonal Frequency in Esophageal Atresia/Tracheo-Esophageal Fistula: Is there an Environmental Etiology?

Background: Esophageal Atresia and Tracheo-Esophageal Fistula (EA/TEF) occurs sporadically and its eti-ology is poorly understood. We observed six cases of EA/TEF within three weeks of October 2007 at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Nigeria. Aims: To analyze the monthly trends of presentation of EA/TEF at the LUTH from 2002-7, test the hypothesis that the October figures were not due to chance and correlate data with known local disease patterns. Setting: Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Nigeria. Patients, Materials, Method: A retrospective analysis of all EA/TEFs managed at the LUTH within stated period. Results: 25 babies with EA/TEF presented over the period. 10 (40%) were seen in the month of Oc-tober, 5 (20%) occurred in May while the rest were spread over the rest of the months. Chi-square analysis confirmed that the EA/TEF cases occurred significantly more frequently in October (P < 0.001) and this ob-servation was unlikely due to chance. Conclusions: There seems to be a seasonal variation in the occurrence of EA/TEF in Lagos, with a significantly higher frequency in the month of October. 96% of mothers of ba-bies with EA/TEF lived in low socioeconomic parts of Lagos. This study highlights the possibility of local viral etiology of EA/TEF.

Development of an Anaerobic Digestion Unit for Biogas Production from Cow Dung Substrate

An anaerobic digestion unit for producing biogas from cow dung in the rural communities was designed, fabricated and tested for performance, durability and throughput. The major components of the digester included the substrate holding tank, tank cover, agitator, debris collector, inlet and outlet pipes, gas reception tank, hose and heat source. The digester is a vertical cylindrical tank with an inlet pipe for the introduction of substrate and an outlet pipe to collect the digested substrate. An agitator is incorporated inside the digester to break scum on the substrate and create uniform temperature profile in the digester while a pressure gauge was fitted to the gas outlet valve to measure the gas pressure in the tank. The agitator shaft is extended outside to be driven by an electric motor through belt and pulley system. The criteria considered in the design of the digester included air tightness of the system, mesophilic and thermophilic temperature, nature and type of substrate used, substrate retention period, number of crank turns per minute and volumetric capacity of the digestion tank. Other considerations included the desire to make the digestion tank and gas reception tank of galvanized steel to ensure good quality of the product and the need for a strong structural support to ensure structural stability of the system. After construction and assembly, the biogas digestion unit was tested with 40 kg of cow dung diluted with 80 kg of water and subjected to a retention period to make a substrate （slurry） of 10 % total solid （TS）. Daily gas yield was determined; gas pressure in the tank was measured by the pressure gauge, while the ambient temperature was taken at five hours interval. Results showed that a cumulative gas yield of 0.415 litres after 22 d retention period at average substrate temperature and pH of 29 ℃ and 6.2, respectively. HIV Seropositivity among Paediatric Surgical Patients at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital: What Risk to the Surgeon

Background: Although much concern has been expressed about the occupational risk posed to surgeons by the HIV pandemic infection, the paediatric age group is often seen as less likely to harbor the disease. Aim: To determine the HIV infection rate among children presenting for surgical operations at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Lagos. Materials, patients and method: Blood was taken from 1000 consecutive children referred to LUTH for surgical conditions and tested for HIV sero-positivity using the Western blot method. Consenting parents of sero-positive patients were also tested. Result: Five children tested positive for HIV, giving an overall infection rate of 0.5%. Four mothers and three consenting fathers were also positive. In one child, none of the parents was positive and he was suspected to have developed the disease from a previous blood transfusion prior to presentation in LUTH. This possibly resulted from transfusion of infected blood during its window period. Conclusion: Although the HIV infection rate of 0.5% in paediatric surgical group in Lagos is low, surgeons should vigilantly apply universal precautions to prevent needle-stick injuries while the rate of HIV infection should be periodically monitored to determine the trend.

Stability Analysis of a Numerical Integrator for Solving First Order Ordinary Differential Equation

In this paper, we used an interpolation function to derive a Numerical Integrator that can be used for solving first order Initial Value Problems in Ordinary Differential Equation. The numerical quality of the Integrator has been analyzed to authenticate the reliability of the new method. The numerical test showed that the finite difference methods developed possess the same monotonic properties with the analytic solution of the sampled Initial Value Problems.
