Soil salinity diminishes soil health and reduces crop yield,which is becoming a major global *** stress is one of the primary stresses,leading to several other secondary stresses that restrict plant growth and soil *** major secondary stresses induced in plants under saline-alkaline conditions include osmotic stress,nutrient limitation,and ionic stress,all of which negatively impact overall plant *** stressed conditions,certain beneficial soil microflora are known to have evolved phytostimulating mechanisms,such as the synthesis of osmoprotectants,siderophores,1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid(ACC)deaminase activity,phosphate solubilization,and hormone production,which enhance plant growth and development while mitigating nutrient *** soil-borne bacterial species such as Bacillus,Pseudomonas,and Klebsiella and fungal strains such as Trichoderma,Aspergillus,Penicillium,Alternaria,and Fusarium also aid in reducing salinity ***-solubilizing microorganisms also assist in nutrient acquisition via both enzymatic and non-enzymatic *** the case of enzymatic processes,they produce different enzymes such as alkaline phosphatases and phytases,whereas non-enzymatic processes produce organic acids such as gluconic,citric,malic,and oxalic *** native halotolerant/halophilic soil microbial gene pool with multifunctional traits and stress-induced gene expression can be developed as suitable bio-inoculants to enhance stress tolerance and optimize plant growth in saline soils.

Anti-angiogenic agents in metastatic colorectal cancer

Colorectal cancer(CRC) is a major public health concern being the third leading cause of cancer mortality in the United States. The availability of better therapeutic options has led to a decline in cancer mortality in these patients. Surgical resection should be considered in all stages of the disease. The use of conversion therapy has made surgery a potentially curative option even in patients with initially unresectable metastatic disease. In this review we discuss the role of various antiangiogenic agents in patients with metastatic CRC(m CRC). We describe the mechanism of action of these agents, and the rationale for their use in combination with chemotherapy. We also review important clinical studies that have evaluated the safety and efficacy of these agents in m CRC patients. Despite the discovery of several promising anti-angiogenic agents, m CRC remains an incurable disease with a median overall survival of just over 2 years in patients exposed to all available treatment regimens. Further insights into tumor biology and tumor microenvironment may help improve outcomes in these patients.

Prediction and optimization of process variables to maximize the Young’s modulus of plasma sprayed alumina coatings on AZ31B magnesium alloy

Like other manufacturing techniques,plasma spraying has also a non-linear behavior because of the contribution of many coating *** characteristic results in finding optimal factor combination ***,the issue can be solved through effective and strategic statistical procedures integrated with systematic experimental *** spray parameters such as power,stand-off distance and powder feed rate have significant influence on coating characteristics like Young’s *** paper presents the use of statistical techniques in specifically response surface methodology(RSM),analysis of variance,and regression analysis to develop empirical relationship to predict Young’s modulus of plasma-sprayed alumina *** developed empirical relationships can be effectively used to predict Young’s modulus of plasma-sprayed alumina coatings at 95%confidence *** graphs and contour plots were constructed to identify the optimum plasma spray parameters to attain maximum Young’s modulus in alumina coatings.A linear regression relationship was established between porosity and Young’s modulus of the alumina coatings.

‘Do I Really Need It?'Professional Development in Pragmatics in Asian EFL

One of the foremost tasks in conducting any research in the field of social sciences involves ascertaining a need for such research to be carried *** Analysis (NA)is the primary tool used in recording the perceptions of stakeholders in educational *** present study employed a sequential exploratory strategy to gather the views of 15 Non-Native English Speaking Teachers (NNEST) from the North of *** first aim of the study was to determine the extent to which a need for L2 pragmatics instruction existed in Thailand,an Asian English as a Foreign Language (EFL)***,the study aimed to collect the suggestions of the participants regarding tasks,methods of instruction,and other activities that would enable the delivery of such instruction using in-service professional development workshops in *** data to reach the objectives were collected by employing a semi-structured interview and an online questionnaire. The present paper discusses the qualitative findings,which were determined using content analysis followed by thematic analysis of the *** findings reveal a definite need for L2 pragmatics instruction for Asian NNESTs in ***,the participants indicated a preference for explicit L2 pragmatic *** addition,the participants favored an enhancement of L2 pragmatic strategies in speech acts that would be relevant in academic,and pedagogical contexts in Thailand.

Improving Performance of a Distributed File System Using a Speculative Semantics-Based Algorithm

File-sharing semantics is used by the file systems for sharing data among concurrent client processes in a consistent manner. Session semantics is a widely used file-sharing semantics in Distributed File Systems(DFSs). The main disadvantage of session semantics is that writes to an open file are visible to the concurrent client processes only during their next session. Recently, "linearizability semantics" was introduced in Blob Seer DFS, in which a Read Client Process(RCP) can read only a previous version of a binary large object(blob), while update operations are carried out on that blob in a concurrent manner. In this paper, we propose a new type of file-sharing semantics, namely "speculative semantics", which permits writes to an open file to be visible to other concurrent processes provided that data consistency is not affected. In addition, we propose a new read algorithm for DFSs based on speculative semantics and a new performance measurement metric called Currency. The experimental results obtained using Blob Seer DFS indicate that the proposed read algorithm performs better than the existing read algorithm of Blob Seer DFS.

Process optimization for microencapsulation of probiotic yeasts

Microencapsulation is a technique which improves the survival and viability of probiotics. We demonstrate encapsulation of five potential probiotic yeasts with alginate and gum as encapsulation matrices to improve their gastrointestinal transit. Gum extracted from various cereals viz. rice, oats, barley, finger millet and pearl millet along with alginate have been used to encapsulate five potential probiotic yeasts. Screening was carried out by measuring swelling index, encapsulation efficiency and nutritional value of microcapsules encapsulated with alginate and gum. The concentration of OBG, sodium alginate and inoculum dosage of probiotic yeasts was optimized using response surface methodology (RSM). Efficiency of alginate OBG microcapsules with or without coating materials viz. whey protein and chitosan also tested. The mucoadhesion ability and storage stability of alginate OBG microcapsules with coating materials were tested. Highest encapsulation efficiency of probiotic yeasts was noted using oats bran gum (OBG) microcapsules along with alginate in all the five probiotic yeasts. Notably whey protein coated microcapsules showed maximum GIT tolerance (95%) and mucoadhesion (90%) for L. starkeyi VIT-MN03. The minimum loss of viability was observed in L. starkeyi VITMN03 microcapsules on 60th day of storage. This is the first report on optimization and survival of microencapsulated probiotic yeasts under simulated GIT conditions using natural gum and alginate as encapsulation matrices and whey protein as coating material.

Microbial Populations,Activity and Gene Abundance in Tropical Vertisols Under Intensive Chemical Farming

There are increasing concerns on the environmental impacts of intensive chemical agriculture. The effect of high agrochemical inputs used in intensive chemical farming was assessed on soil microbiological, molecular and biochemical properties in tropical Vertisols in India. Farm field sites under normal cultivation of arable crops using high inputs of fertilizers and pesticides in chili （Capsicum annum L., 5.0× dose for fertilizers and 1.5× dose for pesticides over normal inputs） and black gram （Vigna mungo L. Hepper, 2.2× dose for fertilizers and 2.3× dose for pesticides over normal inputs） were compared with adjacent sites using normal recommended doses. Organic carbon and basal respiration showed no response to high inputs of fertilizers and pesticides in soils of both crops. Labile carbon decreased by 10% in chili soils and increased by 24% in black gram soils under high input farming system. The proportion of soil labile carbon as a fraction of soil organic carbon was unaffected by high inputs. The labile carbon mineralization coefficient （qMLc） increased by 50.0% in chili soils, indicating that the soil microorganisms were under stress due to high agochemical inputs, whereas qMLc decreased by 36.4% in black gram soils. Copiotrophs increased due to high inputs in soils of both chili （63.1%） and black gram （47.1%）. Oligotrophs increased by 10.8% in black gram soils but not in chili soils. The abundance of amoA gene reduced by 39.3% in chili soils due to high inputs and increased significantly by 110.8% in black gram soils. β-Glucosidase also increased by 27.2% and 325.0%, respectively. Acid phosphatase activity reduced by 29.2% due to high inputs in chili soils and increased by 105.0% in black gram soils. The use of high agrochemical inputs thus had adverse consequences on biological health in chili but not in black gram soils.
