High level infant mortality rates and onset of drug resistance has led into the possible development of indigenous probiotics as alternative bacteriotherapy in the control of infantile bacterial *** study was to determine the in vitro inhibitory potential of four probiotic candidates obtained from Nigerian indigenous fermented foods and beverages and from faecal specimens of healthy infants on infantile Gram-positive diarrhogenic bacterial *** probiotic candidates,AAOOL4,*** AAOOCH1,*** AA0025NN and *** AAOOT20 were assayed for in vitro bactericidal effects on diarrhogenic bacterial test strains-Bacillus cereus 25S,*** 32S,*** 26S and *** *** the test strains inoculated into an industrial infant weaning food already seeded with the probiotic strains were significantly inhibited within 96 *** AAOOL4,*** AAOOCH1,*** AAOO25NN and *** AAOOT20 had in vitro bactericidal effects on bacteri isolates implicated in infantile diarrhoea,indicating the probiotic potential of the candidates.

In this study,the physicochemical properties of linseed and linseed biofuel were studied and their effect on the flow properties of Nigerian waxy crude oil at different volume fractions was *** Nigerian wax crude oil was characterized for its specific gravity,API gravity,wax content,pour point and cloud *** properties of the linseed oil and linseed biodiesel investigated include:density,specific gravity,viscosity,pour point,cloud point and flash *** esterification of the free fatty acid(FFA)contained in the linseed oil reduced from 3.5 to 0.75 and the viscosity of the seed oil reduces from 2169 to 362 mm^(2)/*** linseed oil and its biodiesel exhibited similar trend of reduced viscosity at higher shear rate,however,linseed biodiesel demonstrated the lowest viscosities,cloud points and pour points owing to reduced fatty *** effect of the linseed oil and its biodiesel on the pour point and cloud point of the waxy crude oil was determined;and the performance compared to that of xylene.A rapid drop in the pour point and cloud point was observed with the wax crude pre-heated with 0.1 v/v linseed oil,its biodiesel and xylene.

Objective:To evaluate the in vitro inhibitory potential of commonly available antibiotic(discs) and paediatric suspensions against bacterial species from polio-positive faecal ***:Commonly available antibiotic (discs) and oral,paediatric suspensions were screened for in vitro inhibitory activities against bacterial species from infantile polio-positive faecal specimens,using agar disc-diffusion and modified agar well-diffusion ***:Isolated bacteria were Bacillus cereus,***,Staphylococcus aureus,Streptococcus pneumoniae,Aeromonas hydrophila,Citrobacter aerogenes,Escherichia coli,Enterobacter aerogenes,Klebsiella pneumoniae,Pseudomonas aeruginosa,Proteus mirabilis,***,Shigella dysenteriae,***,Sh. sonnei and Vibrio *** phenotypic antibiotic susceptibility rates among Gram-positive bacterial species were between 33.3%(augmentin) and 75.0%(chloramphenicol,erythromycin and gentamicin); higher susceptibility rates(48.6%-100.0%) were recorded among Gram-negative bacterial species, while between7.8%/ 10.1%(metronidazole / ampicillin) and 25.2%/28.1%(cotrimoxazole / septrin) were recorded towards paediatric ***:Bacterial species from polio-positive fecal specimens are minimally susceptible to commonly available oral paediatric antibiotic suspensions in Nigeria.

Perception and Practice of Emergency Contraception among Female Undergraduates of the University of Ibadan, Nigeria

Objective To assess perception and level of proper utilization of emergency contraception （EC） among female undergraduates. Methods Cross-sectional questionnaire study was performed on 383 female undergraduates in Nigeria in June 2006. Data analysis was with Z-square test and logistic regressions （P 〈O. 05）. Results One hundred and five （48.2%） had been sexually exposed. Only 32 （30.5%） used regular contraception. Seventy-three （24.3%）female undergraduates were aware of EC. Only 29 （7.6%） had used EC before. Most would not use emergency contraceptive drugs in future due to lack of awareness （64.8%）, and fear for future fertility and of drugs being injurious to health. Use of EC was associated with awareness of correct interval for use （OR=9.1; 95%CI： 2.1-39.9）. Conclusion There is poor knowledge about EC and poor use, while significant need remains. Most knowledge was acquired from peers and inaccurate. Peer educators are important and professionals＇ knowledge needs improvement.

This study affirms the effect of family planning on rural household food security. The major thrust of this research identified socio-economic characteristics of respondents, various family planning methods used, benefit of use and factors influencing household food security in the study area. The research was carried out in 4 Local Government areas （LGAs） of Oyo state, where five communities each were randomly selected from the LGAs. A total of 272 households were sampled from the 20 communities. Descriptive and multinomial logit regression were used to analyse data collected. Findings revealed that 64.4% of the respondents were female, mean age was 40 years; about 80% of them were married and most of them had formal education with average of 10years spent in school. Result further revealed that that most of the respondents adopt artificial method of family planning. Sex, marital status of respondent, number of children; primary occupation, traditional method, natural method and artificial method of family planning were the factors influencing household food security status. It was recommended that rural household should be enlightened on the advantages of the use of family planning to improve their household nutritional intake level as well as standard of living.

Set of integers, Zn is split into even-odd parts. The even part is arranged in ways, while the odd part fixes one point at a time to compliment the even part thereby forming the semigroup, AZn. Thus, -spaces are filled choosing maximum of two even points at a time. Green’s relations have formed important structures that enhance the algebraic study of transformation semigroups. The semigroup of Alternating Nonnegative Integers for n-even (AZn-even) is shown to have only two D-classes, and there are -classes for n≥4. The cardinality of L-classes is constant. Certain cardinalities and some other properties were derived. The coefficients of the zigzag triples obtained are 1, and . The second and third coefficients can be obtained by zigzag addition.

Effect of ceramic powder coating on low carbon steel samples was presented. Electrostatic deposition method was used to produce ceramic coatings on low carbon steels. The coatings were fabricated over a range of temperatures (100℃ - 400℃). Detailed investigation on the corrosion behaviour, the hardness property and electrode potential of the fabricated and uncoated samples are reported. The ceramic materials used are locally available in Ondo-State Nigeria. The coating temperatures affect the rate of corrosion, the hardness property and the electrical resistivity of the coated steel sample. The sample coated at 300℃ with ceramic powder Y showed the best corrosion resistance in 0.5 M NaCl solution. The highest resistivity occurred in the sample coated at 300℃ with ceramic powder Z. All the samples coated with ceramic powder Y had better corrosion resistance in 0.5 M NaCl than the one coated by sample Z.

Fresh leaves of oil bean (P. macrophylla) were used as sensitizers for fabrication of dye sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) at four dye pH values of 2.58°C at 23.7°C, 2.62°C at 22.2°C, 2.65°C at 22.3°C and 3.61°C at 22.1 °C. The methanol extracts of P. macrophylla were extracted and used as sensitizers for the development of dye sensitized solar cells. The solar cells sensitized by P. macrophylla leaf extracts realised up to short circuit current (Jsc) 0.16 mA/cm2, open circuit voltage (Voc) 0.045 V, Pmax 0.031 mW/ cm2 and fill factor (FF) 0.50. The energy conversion efficiency (η) of the DSSCs is 0.43%. Phytochemical screening of P. macrophylla leaf extract shows the presence of flavonoids and anthraquinones. The nanostructured dye shows conversion of solar energy into electricity using low cost natural dyes as wide band-gap semiconductor sensitizers in DSSCs. This will provide economically viable substitute to silicon p-n junction photovoltaic (PV).
