Carcinogenesis describes the process through which normal cells transform into malignant cells(cancer).There were an estimated 18.1 million new cases of cancer(all cancers combined excluding non-melanoma skin cancer)worldwide in 2020:8.8 million(48%)in females and 9.3 million(52%)in males,giving a male:female ratio of 10:*** may be initiated by the action of biological,physical,or chemical agents that cause a non-lethal,permanent,DNA error on the cell with a consequence of altered cell *** altered cell metabolism include the Warburg effect,altered lipid and amino acid metabolism and production of various *** also results in unique metabolic dependencies that,in some cases,can be targeted with precision medicine and nutrition,including drugs that selectively target metabolic *** fingerprinting has been applied to the study of carcinogenesis and is particularly helpful in early diagnosis,staging and choice of treatment,thus improving health *** technology could therefore be harnessed effectively while combining with other omics technologies.

Composite water samples taken from Owena Multi-purpose Dam in six sampling campaigns covering the wet and dry seasons were analyzed for physico-chemical and microbial characteristics using standard methods for the examination of water and wastewater jointly published by the American Public Health Association, American Water Works Association and Water Pollution Control Federation. Results showed significant (p < 0.05) seasonal variations in most measured parameters with few showing significant spatial variation. The characteristics of the water from the dam lake revealed an acceptable quality for most measured parameters with low chemical pollutants burden when compared with drinking water standards and water quality for aquaculture. However, high values of turbidity, colour, iron, manganese and microbial load were recorded compared with drinking water standards, which call for proper treatment of the water before distribution for public consumption.

Equilibrium Sorption of Lead and Nickel from Solutions by Flame of the Forest (<i>Delonix regia</i>) Pods: Kinetics and Isothermic Study

Batch adsorption techniques were used to study the biosorption of Lead and Nickel from aqueous solutions by Flame of the forest pods. The effects of optimum pH, contact time, metal ion concentration, biosorbent dose, biosorbent particle size and the presence of sodium, calcium and magnesium interfering ions on the sorption were investigated. Experimental results showed that Delonix regia biomass was effective in removing these metals from aqueous solutions as the equilibrium biosorption of both metals was attained within 60 minutes of interaction with 98% of the metals removed within this period. Sorption of these metals was dependent on pH as maximum removal was attained at pH 4 and pH 5 for Lead and Nickel ions respectively. Adsorption experiments showed that the process followed the pseudo second order kinetic model with high r2 (0.9999) and the equilibrium data fitted well with Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models. The presence of competing ions impacted negatively on the sorption process irrespective of the type used. 27% and 36% of lead (II) were recovered from the spent biosorbents with 1 MHCl and disodium salt of EDTA solutions respectively.

Introduction: Infertilityaffects one in six couples, and it is an important public health issue largely due to thepervasive effects on the emotional and psychological wellbeing of affected couples. In many developing nations emphasis is placed on childbirth and inability to fulfill this role can be very distressing. There is an unmet need for assisted reproductive technology (ART) in many developing countries and where facilities exist, they are mostly privately owned, expensive and concentrated in urban areas. To bridge this gap, public fertility clinics have been established to provide subsidized care. Evaluating the characteristics and peculiarities of clientele presenting at these public facilities will aid planning and prioritization of care. Methodology: A descriptive retrospective study of 116 infertile patients presenting to the fertility clinic of the University College Hospital, Ibadan, Nigeria from inception on the 14th of February 2019 and 31st of December *** was analyzed using the Statical Package for Social Sciences (IBM, SPSS, New York) version 23. Descriptive statistics were used to summarize the results which were presented with the aid of bar charts and frequency tables. Result: The mean age of the patients was 40.70 ± 6.62 years. Post-menopausal patients accounted for about one-fifth of the study population while 80.2% (93 women) were older than 35 years. The mean duration of infertility was 9.39 ± 6.11years and nine patients (7.8%) had a duration greater than 2 decades. Secondary infertility occurred in 67.2% of the women. Twenty-nine women (25%) had undergone myomectomy prior to presentation. Hypertension (11.2%) was the most prevalent comorbidity. Nineteen patients (16.4%) had used contraceptives in the past with the male condom (36.8%)being the most preponderant. Conversion of hourly dispatch cases derived using DC optimal power flow(DCOPF)to AC power flow(ACPF)case is often challenging and requires arduous human analysis and *** paper proposes an automated two-stage approach to solve ACPF formulated from DCOPF dispatch *** first stage involved the use of the conventional Newton Raphson method to solve the ACPF from flat start,then ACPF cases that are unsolvable in the first stage are subjected to a hotstarting incremental method,based on homotopy continuation,in the second *** tasks such as the addition of reactive power compensation and tuning of voltage setpoints that typically require human intervention were automated using a criteriabased selection method and optimal power flow *** datasets with hourly dispatches for the 243-bus reduced WECC system were used to test the proposed *** algorithm was able to convert 100%of the first set of dispatch cases to solved ACPF *** the second dataset with suspect dispatch cases to represent an extreme conversion scenario,the algorithm created solved ACPF cases that satisfied a defined success criterion for 77.8%of the dispatch *** average run time for the hotstarting algorithm to create a solved ACPF case for a dispatch was less than 1 minute for the reduced WECC system.

1,2-Dichloroethane （DCA）, a potential mutagen and carcinogen, is commonly introduced into the environment through its industrial and agricultural use. In this study, the impact of lead and mercury on DCA degradation in soil was investigated, owing to the complex co-contamination problem frequently encountered in most sites. 1,2-Dichloroethane was degraded readily in both contaminated loam and clay soils with the degradation rate constants ranging between 0.370-0.536 week-1 and 0.309-0.417 week-1, respectively. The presence of heavy metals have a negative impact on DCA degradation in both soil types, resulting in up to 24.11% reduction in DCA degradation within one week. Both biostimulation and treatment additives increased DCA degradation, with the best degradation observed upon addition of glucose and a combination of diphosphate salt and sodium chloride, leading to about 17.91% and 43.50% increase in DCA degradation, respectively. The results have promising potential for effective remediation of soils co-contaminated with chlorinated organics and heavy metals. However, the best bioremediation strategy will depend on the soil types, microbial population present in the soil matrices, nutrients availability and metal forms.

The innate toxicity of dichloroethenes(DCEs) and their tendency to be reduced to vinyl chloride(VC)(a known human carcinogen) is a cause for environmental concern. Aerobic bacteria capable of growth on cis- and trans-DCEs as sole carbon and energy sources were isolated by enrichment culture technique and identified to belong to the genera; Bacillus, Pseudomonas and Acinetobacter. Axenic and mixed cultures of the bacterial isolates utilized DCEs at concentrations above the maximum contaminant level allowable in drinking water by the Environmental Protection Agency. Their specific growth rate constant ranged significantly(P<0.05) between 0.346—0.552 and 0.461—0.667 d -1; while the maximum specific substrate utilization rate ranged significantly(P<0.05) between 20.01—29.79 and 31.40—42.83 nmol h -1 (mg of protein) -1 in cis- and trans-DCE, respectively. The optimum growth was observed at 30℃ and at a pH of 7.0 with up to 96% of the stoichiometric-expected chloride released. Serial adaptation positively affected the growth yields and dehalogenase activities of the organisms with multiple antibiotic patterns also demonstrated by the isolates. These findings therefore indicated the important roles that these organisms may play in the bioremediation of sites polluted with chlorinated ethene compounds in Africa.
