Syringaldehyde exerts neuroprotective effect on cerebral ischemia injury in rats through anti-oxidative and anti-apoptotic properties

There are few studies on the neuroprotective effects of syringaldehyde in a rat model of cerebral ischemia. The study aimed to elucidate the mechanisms underlying the neuroprotective effects of syringaldehyde on ischemic brain cells. Rat models of cerebral ischemia were intraperitoneally administered syringaldehyde. At 6 and 24 hours after syringaldehyde administration, cell damage in the brain of cerebral ischemia rats was obviously reduced, superoxide dismutase activity and nuclear respiratory factor 1 expression in the brain tissue were markedly increased, malondi-adehyde level was obviously decreased, apoptosis-related cysteine peptidase caspase-3 and -9 immunoreactivity was obviously decreased, and neurological function was markedly improved. These ifndings suggest that syringaldehyde exerts neuroprotective effects on cerebral ischemia injury through anti-oxidation and anti-apoptosis.

The novel polymer metal chelate electrolytes(polychelates)were prepared by incorporation of cobalt sulfate(Co)into poly(acrylic acid)(PAA)host ***-solid state supercapacitor devices were fabricated using polychelates,PAA-Co X(X:3,5,7,and 10)where X represents the doping fraction(w/w)of Co in *** polymer metal electrolytes were showed excellent bending-stretching properties,thermal stability and electrochemical durability with an optimum ionic conductivity of 3.15×10^(-4) S cm^(-1).Hierarchically porous activated carbon and nano-sized conductive carbon were used to form carbon composite symmetrical device *** electric double-layer capacitor(EDLC)and redox reactions of Co-incorporated polychelates at the interfaces of porous activated carbon provided an optimum specific capacitance of 341.33 F g^(-1) with a device of PAA-Co7,which is at least 15 times enhancement compared to the device of pristine *** PAA-Co7 device also provided energy density of 21.25 Wh kg^(-1) at a power density of 117.69 W kg^(-1).A prolonged cyclic stability of the device exhibited superior capacitive performance after 10,000 charge-discharge cycles and the maintained 90%of its initial *** addition,the supercapacitor with a dimension of 1.5 cm×3 cm containing PAA-Co7 successfully operated the red-blue-green(RGB)LED light.

Intragastric balloon therapy, as a part of a multidisciplinary weight management program, is an effective short-term intervention for weight loss. Although the insertion procedure is easy and generally well tolerated by patients, a few complications can occur. We report here a heavy smoker with intragastric balloon inser-tion complicated by colonization with opportunistic organisms. The 27-year-old female, body mass index 35.5 kg/m2, had a BioEnterics Intragastric Balloon inserted under conscious sedation without any perioperative complications. Six months later, when the standard removal time arrived, the balloon was seen to be covered with a necrotic white-gray material. Microbiological examination revealed Enterobacter cloacae and Candida species yeast colonies. We recommend that asymptomatic fungal and/or bacterial colonization should be considered among the complications of the intragastric balloon procedure, despite its rarity.

In this work, the finite element analysis of the elasto-plastic plate bending problems is carried out using transition rectangular plate elements. The shape functions of the transition plate elements are derived based on a practical rule. The transition plate elements are all quadrilateral and can be used to obtain efficient finite element models using minimum number of elements. The mesh convergence rates of the models including the transition elements are compared with the regular element models. To verify the developed elements, simple tests are demonstrated and various elasto-plastic problems are solved. Their results are compared with ANSYS results.

The biosorption of phosphorus in the form of orthophosphate（Po） from wastewater using biomass as the sorbent is of potential importance because the Po-loaded biomass could be applied in the agricultural sector as fertilizer and soil conditioner. However, biomass generally displays a very low affinity for Posorption and therefore biomass surface modification is required. In the present study, the biomass（as model grinded leaves of Phragmites sp. were used）was pretreated with Ca（OH）2to enhance Pobiosorption capacity（qe）. The results indicate that the alkaline pretreatment resulted in a modification of surface functional groups. It was concluded that the main sorption mechanisms were ligand exchange and electrostatic attraction. A series of experiments were conducted to investigate the performance of the pretreated biomass for Pouptake under various conditions. Isotherm and thermodynamic studies were also applied and analyzed. The biosorption process was best described by the pseudo-second order kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm, which gave a qmaxof 12.27 mg P/g at 25°C and p H 7. The Ca（OH）2treated Phragmites biomass applied in this study for Porecovery may present some potential advantages in terms of costs and environmental impact.

AIM: To quantify corneal ultrastructure using laser scanning in vivo confocal microscopy(IVCM) in patients with keratoconus and control subjects. METHODS: Unscarred corneas of 78 keratoconic subjects without a history of contact lens use and 36age-matched control subjects were evaluated with slit-lamp examination(SLE), corneal topography and laser scanning IVCM. One eye was randomly chosen for analysis. Anterior and posterior stromal keratocyte,endothelial cell and basal epithelial cell densities and sub-basal nerve structure were ***: IVCM qualitatively demonstrated enlarged basal epithelial cells, structural changes in sub-basal and stromal nerve fibers, abnormal stromal keratocytes and keratocyte nuclei, and pleomorphism and enlargement of endothelial cells. Compared with control subjects, significant reductions in basal epithelial cell density( 5817 ± 306 cells / mm2 vs 4802 ±508 cells/mm2,P < 0. 001), anterior stromal keratocyte density(800 ±111 cells/mm2 vs 555 ±115 cells/mm2, P <0.001),posterior stromal keratocyte density(333±34 cells/mm2vs270 ±47 cells/mm2, P <0.001), endothelial cell density(2875 ±223 cells/mm2 vs 2686 ±265 cells/mm2, P <0.001),sub-basal nerve fiber density(31.2 ±8.4 nerves/mm2vs18.1 ±9.2 nerves/mm2, P <0.001), sub-basal nerve fiber length(21.4±3.4 mm/mm2 vs 16.1±5.1 mm/mm2, P <0.001),and sub-basal nerve branch density(median 50.0(first quartile 31.2- third quartile 68.7) nerve branches/mm2 vs median 25.0(first quartile 6.2- third quartile 45.3) nerve branches/mm2, P <0.001) were observed in patients with ***: Significant microstructural abnormalities were identified in all corneal layers in the eyes of subjects with keratoconus using IVCM. AIM:To investigate the association between apolipoprotein E(APOE)-219 T>G promoter polymorphism and primary open angle glaucoma(POAG).METHODS:Patients and healthy subjects were genotyped with polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism(PCR-RFLP).Genotype/allele frequencies were compared between 122 healthy subjects and in 75 POAG patients using Chi-square ***:Although the frequency of APOE-219 GG genotype was higher in POAG group(13.3%)than in control group(6.6%),this finding was not statistically significant(P=0.09).In glaucoma patients carrying GG genotype,mean linear C/D ratio was higher and progression was more compared to glaucoma patients with GT ***:APOE-219 T>G polymorphism does not seem to be a risk factor for the presence of glaucoma,but might play a role in deterioration of the disease,which needs further evaluation.
