Xanthogranulomatous appendicitis: A comprehensive literature review

Mechanisms of action of leptin in preventing gastric ulcer

To investigate the effects of leptin （1-20μg/kg） on acidified ethanol （AE）- and indomethacin （Indo）-induced gastric lesions in rats and compare it with ranitidine, lansoprazole, and omeprazole and to determine its mechanisms of ***： Gastric ulcers, which were approximately 1 mm in width, formed in the glandular portion of the gastric mucosa produced by oral administration of either AE or Indo were taken as ulcer index. The inhibitory effect of subcutaneous administration of leptin, two proton pump inhibitors （PPIs） lansoprazole and omeprazole, or H2-receptor antagonist ranitidine 30 min before AE or Indo was evaluated.A radioimmunoassay was used to determine the PGE2 concentration in the homogenate of the glandular portion of the stomach. We performed histological study of the glandular stomach for the evaluation of total, acidic, and sulfated mucus ***： Subcutaneous administration of leptin, two PPI slansoprazole and omeprazole or H2-receptor antagonist ranitidine 30 min before AE or Indo produced a dosedependent and reproducible inhibition of gastric ulcers （GUs）. This inhibition was found to be more potent than other antagonists used. In N^G-nitro L-arginine methyl ester （L-NAME）-pretreated animals, the ulcer prevention ability of leptin in AE-induced ulcer was significantly reduced,compared to rats without L-NAME pretreatment. However,the ulcer prevention ability of leptin was not altered by L-NAME treatment in Indo-induced ulcers. Leptin produced a dose-dependent increase in PGE2 level in the gastric glandular tissues. Leptin also increased mucus ***： The results of the present study show that leptin inhibits GU formation by AE or Indo in a dosedependent and reproducible manner in rats. The results also suggest that leptin prevents ulcer formation by increasing the activities of the cyclo-oxygenase and/or nitric oxide pathways and by increasing mucus secretion.

Mechanical lithotripsy and/or stenting in management of difficult common bile duct stones

BACKGROUND:Mechanical lithotripsy and/or stent insertion is the alternative therapeutic approach in difficult endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP)*** study was designed to investigate the appropriate treatment for extraction of bile duct stones in difficult cases of ERCP. METHODS:Between 2000 and 2008,744 ERCP procedures were performed in 592 patients with choledocholithiasis in our endoscopy *** demographic features,and clinical and laboratory findings were collected from a prospectively held *** duct calculi were extracted by basket and/or balloon catheter following ERCP and *** with retained stones were regarded as difficult *** patients were treated with mechanical lithotripsy and those with incomplete clearance of stones underwent stent placement. RESULTS:Two hundred and forty-five patients(41%) were male and 347(59%)were female with a mean age of 58 years(range 19-95 years).Stones were impacted in 27 patients(5%).Stone extraction was performed by basket and/or balloon catheter in 610 ERCP procedures,and lithotripsy was performed in 70 ERCP ***- four patients underwent stent insertion,and 20 underwent stent *** occurred in 39 patients (5%),with no mortality associated with the *** occurred in 9 patients and basket impaction in *** pancreatitis and cholangitis developed in 12 and 11 patients,respectively. CONCLUSION:Difficult cases of bile duct stones can be treated successfully with lithotripsy,and a stent should be applied when the common bile duct cannot be cleared completely.

Evaluation of the Physicochemical Parameters of Cow’s Fresh Milk in Shkodra

Milk is universally recognized as complete food, which contains essential components for human nutrition. Physicochemical analysis constitutes an important device that monitors its quality. The purpose of this study was to determine the physicochemical characteristics of fresh cow milk in samples taken in the region of Shkodra and Lezha and compare it to European quality standards. Results of the analyses were statistically processed by the Minitab 17 statistical program. Results showed that there is no significant difference (P > 0.05) in fat, protein, lactose and density value, while there is significant difference (P < 0.05) in pH, ash% without fat, freezing point and water value. The results show a stability of physicochemical parameters of milk, with variation according to the region where samples were gathered.

Better outcomes with desmopressin melt than enuretic alarm therapy in children with nocturnal enuresis during coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)

Objectives:This study aimed to investigate the effect of the coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)pandemic on the treatment of children with primary monosymptomatic nocturnal enuresis(MNE)with desmopressin melt versus an enuresis *** and methods:This study included 56 children with primary MNE who were taking desmopressin melt or using an *** anxiety levels were evaluated using the Social Anxiety Scale for *** both treatment methods,data from a 3-month bedwetting diary between the third and sixth months of the pre-pandemic treatment were compared with those assessed during the same period during the ***:Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic,the median 3-month mean frequency of MNE was 1(0-7.67)in children using desmopressin melt versus 1.33(0-6)in those using alarm treatment(p=0.095).During the COVID-19 pandemic period,the median monthly mean frequency of MNE was 1.33(0-7.33)in children using desmopressin melt versus 6(1.33-13)in those using alarm treatment(p<0.001).Conclusions:The COVID-19 pandemic and its accompanying psychological effects did not affect the treatment efficacy of desmopressin melt in children with primary MNE but did adversely affect that of enuresis alarms.

The Effect of Mineral Composition and Quantity of Fines on the Atterberg Limits and Compaction Characteristics of Soils

Because of the various elements that come into play in natural soil formation, the impact of varied proportions of mineral composition and fines amount on Atterberg limits and compaction characteristics of soils is not well known. Three distinct soil samples were used in this investigation. The findings indicated the effect of varied mineral composition proportions and fines amount on the liquid limit, plastic limit, and plasticity index as assessed by the Casagrande test and hand-rolling method. The fluctuation of maximum dry density and optimal moisture content with these three soils has also been studied. Furthermore, correlations were established to indicate the compaction parameters and the amount of minerals and particles in the soil. The data show that the mineral content of the soil has a direct impact on the Atterberg limits and compaction characteristics. Soils containing larger percentages of expansive minerals, such as montmorillonite, have more flexibility and volume change capability. Mineral composition influences compaction parameters such as maximum dry density, ideal water content, axial strain, and axial stress. Soils with a larger proportion of fines, such as Soil 2 and Soil 3, have stronger flexibility and lower compaction qualities, with higher ideal water content and lower maximum dry density. Soil 1 has moderate flexibility and intermediate compaction qualities due to its low fines percentage. The effect of different mineral compositions and fines on the Atterberg limits and compaction characteristics of soils can be used to predict the behavior of compacted soils encountered in engineering practices, reducing the time and effort required to assess soil suitability for engineering use.

BACKGROUND Liver tissue situated outside the liver with a hepatic connection is usually calledan accessory liver, and that without a connection to the mother liver, is calledectopic liver *** To identify studies in the literature on ectopic liver tissue located on thegallbladder surface or *** We present two patients and review published articles on ectopic liver tissuelocated on the gallbladder surface accessed via PubMed, MEDLINE, GoogleScholar, and Google databases. Keywords used included accessory liver lobe,aberrant liver tissue, ectopic liver tissue, ectopic liver nodule, heterotopic livertissue, hepatic choristoma, heterotopic liver tissue on the gallbladder, and ectopicliver tissue on the gallbladder. The search included articles published before June2020 with no language restriction. Letters to the editor, case reports, reviewarticles, original articles, and meeting presentations were included in the *** or abstracts containing adequate information on age, sex, history of liverdisease, preliminary diagnosis, radiologic tools, lesion size, surgical indication,surgical procedure, and histopathological features of ectopic liver tissue wereincluded in the *** A total of 72 articles involving 91 cases of ectopic liver tissue located on the gallbladder surface or mesentery were analyzed. Of these 91 patients, 62 werefemale and 25 were male (no gender available for 4 patients), and the age rangewas 5 d to 91 years. Forty-nine patients underwent surgery for chroniccholecystitis or cholelithiasis, and 14 patients underwent surgery for acutecholecystitis. Investigation of Dyeing Properties of Different Fabric Species with Alkanna Orientalis Root Extract

In this study, the dyeing properties of different fabric species were investigated using root extract of yellow sormunen （Alkanna orientalis）. For this purpose, the cotton and wool fabrics were dyed using the root extract of yellow sormunen by pre-mordanting, together-mordanting and last-mordanting methods with copper sulfate （CuSO4）, iron sulfate （FeSO4） and aluminum sulfate （AiK（SO4）2） at medium pH. The same procedure was applied to cotton and wool fabrics that allowed in Artifical Urinary System （AUS） [%3 NH3 ＋ %3 urea ＋ %3 CAC2O4（g/v）] for 24 h. The color codes were determined with Pantone Color Quide, and K/S and L＊ a＊ b＊ values were detected with color measurement spectrophotometer, and also washing-, crocking-fastness levels were evaluated using gray scale. According to the evaluations, the fabrics dyed pre-treated with AUS have higher fastness values than the unpre-treated dyed fabrics with AUS.

Diabetes mellitus(DM) is a systemic and complex disease with micro and macrovascular complications that result from impaired metabolic pathways and genetic susceptibilities. DM has been accepted as an epidemic worldwide during the last two decades. A substantial gap in our knowledge exists regarding the pathophysiology of this metabolic disorder despite the improved diagnostic tools and therapeutic approaches. Sirtuins are a group of NAD+ dependent enzymes that are involved in cellular homeostasis due to their deacetylating activity. In the present review, we aimed to discuss the role of associated sirtuins in the pathogenesis and treatment of diabetes mellitus.

Neuroprotective effects of daidzein on focal cerebral ischemia injury in rats

Daidzein, a plant extract, has antioxidant activity. It is hypothesized, in this study, that daidzein exhibits neuroprotective effects on cerebral ischemia. Rat models of middle cerebral artery oc- clusion were intraperitoneally administered daidzein. Biochemical and immunohistochemical tests showed that superoxide dismutase and nuclear respiratory factor 1 expression levels in the brain tissue decreased after ischemia and they increased obviously after daidzein administra- tion; malondialdehyde level and apoptosis-related cysteine peptidase caspase-3 and caspase-9 immunoreactivity in the brain tissue increased after ischemia and they decreased obviously after daidzein administration. Hematoxylin-eosin staining and luxol fast blue staining results showed that intraperitoneal administration of daidzein markedly alleviated neuronal damage in the ischemic brain tissue. These findings suggest that daidzein exhibits neuroprotective effects on ischemic brain tissue by decreasing oxygen free radical production, which validates the afore- mentioned hypothesis.
