The Effect of Mineral Composition and Quantity of Fines on the Atterberg Limits and Compaction Characteristics of Soils

Because of the various elements that come into play in natural soil formation, the impact of varied proportions of mineral composition and fines amount on Atterberg limits and compaction characteristics of soils is not well known. Three distinct soil samples were used in this investigation. The findings indicated the effect of varied mineral composition proportions and fines amount on the liquid limit, plastic limit, and plasticity index as assessed by the Casagrande test and hand-rolling method. The fluctuation of maximum dry density and optimal moisture content with these three soils has also been studied. Furthermore, correlations were established to indicate the compaction parameters and the amount of minerals and particles in the soil. The data show that the mineral content of the soil has a direct impact on the Atterberg limits and compaction characteristics. Soils containing larger percentages of expansive minerals, such as montmorillonite, have more flexibility and volume change capability. Mineral composition influences compaction parameters such as maximum dry density, ideal water content, axial strain, and axial stress. Soils with a larger proportion of fines, such as Soil 2 and Soil 3, have stronger flexibility and lower compaction qualities, with higher ideal water content and lower maximum dry density. Soil 1 has moderate flexibility and intermediate compaction qualities due to its low fines percentage. The effect of different mineral compositions and fines on the Atterberg limits and compaction characteristics of soils can be used to predict the behavior of compacted soils encountered in engineering practices, reducing the time and effort required to assess soil suitability for engineering use.

Evaluation of diagnostic findings and scoring systems in outcome prediction in acute pancreatitis

AIM： To determine factors related to disease severity, mortality and morbidity in acute pancreatitis.METHODS： One hundred and ninety-nine consecutive patients were admitted with the diagnosis of acute pancreatitis （AP） in a 5-year period （1998-2002）. In a prospective design, demographic data, etiology, mean hospital admission time, clinical, radiological, biochemical findings, treatment modalities, mortality and morbidity were recorded. Endocrine insufficiency was investigated with oral glucose tolerance test. The relations between these parameters, scoring systems （Ranson, Imrie and APACHE Ⅱ） and patients＇ outcome were determined by using invariable tests and the receiver operating characteristics curve.RESULTS： One hundred patients were men and 99 were women; the mean age was 55 years. Biliary pancreatitis was the most common form, followed by idiopathic pancreatitis （53% and 26%, respectively）. Sixty-three patients had severe pancreatitis and 136 had mild disease. Respiratory rate 〉 20/min, pulse rate 〉 90min, increased C-reactive protein （CRP）, lactate dehydrogenase （LDH） and aspartate aminotransferase （AST） levels, organ necrosis 〉 30% on computed tornography （CT） and leukocytosis were associated with severe disease. The rate of glucose intolerance, morbidity and mortality were 24.1%, 24.8% and 13.6%, respectively. CRP 〉 142 mg/L, BUN 〉 22 mg/dL, LDH 〉 667 U/L, base excess 〉 -5, CT severity index 〉 3 and APACHE score 〉 8 were related to morbidity and mortality.CONCLUSION： APACHE Ⅱ score, LDH, base excess and CT severity index have prognostic value and CRP is a reliable marker for predicting both mortality and morbidity.

Investigation of Dyeing Properties of Different Fabric Species with Alkanna Orientalis Root Extract

In this study, the dyeing properties of different fabric species were investigated using root extract of yellow sormunen （Alkanna orientalis）. For this purpose, the cotton and wool fabrics were dyed using the root extract of yellow sormunen by pre-mordanting, together-mordanting and last-mordanting methods with copper sulfate （CuSO4）, iron sulfate （FeSO4） and aluminum sulfate （AiK（SO4）2） at medium pH. The same procedure was applied to cotton and wool fabrics that allowed in Artifical Urinary System （AUS） [%3 NH3 ＋ %3 urea ＋ %3 CAC2O4（g/v）] for 24 h. The color codes were determined with Pantone Color Quide, and K/S and L＊ a＊ b＊ values were detected with color measurement spectrophotometer, and also washing-, crocking-fastness levels were evaluated using gray scale. According to the evaluations, the fabrics dyed pre-treated with AUS have higher fastness values than the unpre-treated dyed fabrics with AUS.

Diabetes mellitus(DM) is a systemic and complex disease with micro and macrovascular complications that result from impaired metabolic pathways and genetic susceptibilities. DM has been accepted as an epidemic worldwide during the last two decades. A substantial gap in our knowledge exists regarding the pathophysiology of this metabolic disorder despite the improved diagnostic tools and therapeutic approaches. Sirtuins are a group of NAD+ dependent enzymes that are involved in cellular homeostasis due to their deacetylating activity. In the present review, we aimed to discuss the role of associated sirtuins in the pathogenesis and treatment of diabetes mellitus.

Effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on patients with presumed diagnosis of acute appendicitis

BACKGROUND Acute appendicitis(AAp) is the most frequent cause of acute abdominal pain,and appendectomy is the most frequent emergency procedure that is performed *** coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19) pandemic has caused delays in managing diseases requiring emergency approaches such as AAp and *** To compare the demographic,clinical,and histopathological outcomes of patients with AAp who underwent appendectomy during pre-COVID-19 and COVID-19 *** The demographic,clinical,biochemical,and histopathological parameters were evaluated and compared in patients who underwent appendectomy with the presumed diagnosis of AAp in the pre-COVID-19(October 2018-March 2020) and COVID-19(March 2020-July 2021) *** Admissions to our tertiary care hospital for AAp increased 44.8% in the COVID-19 ***-19(n = 154) and COVID-19(n = 223) periods were compared for various parameters,and we found that there were statistically significant differences in terms of variables such as procedures performed on the weekdays or weekends [odds ratio(OR):1.76;P = 0.018],presence of AAp findings on ultrasonography(OR:15.4;P < 0.001),confirmation of AAp in the histopathologic analysis(OR:2.6;P = 0.003),determination of perforation in the appendectomy specimen(OR:2.2;P = 0.004),the diameter of the appendix(P < 0.001),and hospital stay(P = 0.003).There was no statistically significant difference in terms of interval between the initiation of symptoms and admission to the hospital between the pre-COVID-19(median:24 h;interquartile range:34) and COVID-19(median:36 h;interquartile range:60) periods(P = 0.348).The interval between the initiation of symptoms until the hospital admission was significantly longer in patients with perforated AAp regardless of the COVID-19 or pre-COVID-19 status(P < 0.001).CONCLUSION The present study showed that in the COVID-19 period,the ultrasonographic determination rate of AAp,perforation rate of AAp,and duration of hospital

The Impact of Small Field’s Off-Set on Output Factor in Intensity Modulated Radiation Treatment

In intensity modulated radiation treatment (IMRT) planning, the use of asymmetrically collimated fields that are placed on central axis or its off-set is mostly required. Output is the main topic discussed today for extremely small and/or severe irregularly shaped fields. The air scatter data are involved directly or indirectly in obtaining the output. Despite the fact that extensive data have been published in many studies to provide a guide on the magnitude of output factor for clinical accelerators, there are very few data reviewed about output factor in-air or phantom for off-set fields. This study was aimed to investigate the impact of these conditions for small fields. This study was conducted in Elekta Synergy linear accelerator which produces 6 MV X-ray energy. The in-air output factor (Sc) has been measured by CC04 ion chamber with brass-alloy “build-up” cap and Dose-1 electrometer, and the total output (Scp) measurements were carried on at dose maximum depth in phantom by the same chamber and Thermoluminescence dosimeter (TLD) for 1 - 10 cm2 fields. The all measurements at center of isocenter and off-set fields at three directions (X2, Y1, Diagonal) were done. By decreasing field size from 10 to 2 cm2 at isocenter, the Sc value using CC04 was decreased to 5.4% and Scp using CC04 and TLD to 14.5% and 11% respectively. By increasing off-set value, the Sc and Scp values were increased in all directions comparing to central fields. The maximum increase was obtained in Y1 direction for Sc and Scp. TLD results for Scp is slightly higher than CC04. The dosimetric properties of small fields and their off-set should be evaluated and modelled appropriately in the treatment planning system to ensure accurate dose calculation in Intensity Modulated Radiation Treatment.

Acute pancreatitis caused by leptospirosis: Report of two cases

Two cases of acute pancreatitis with leptospirosis are reported in this article. Case 1: A 68-year-old woman,presented initially with abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting,and jaundice. She was in poor general condition, and had acute abdominal signs and symptoms on physical examination. Emergency laparotomy was performed, acute pancreatitis and leptospirosis were diagnosed on the basis of surgical findings and serological tests. The patient died on postoperative d 6. Case 2: A 62-year-old man, presented with fever, jaundice, nausea, vomiting, and malaise. Acute pancreatitis associated with leptospirosis was diagnosed,according to abdominal CT scanning and serological *** patient recovered fully with antibiotic treatment and nutritional support within 19 d.

Intrabiliary rupture: An algorithm in the treatment of controversial complication of hepatic hydatidosis

AIM: Intrabiliary rupture (IBR) is a common and serious compli-cation of hepatic hydatid cyst. The incidence varies from 1% to 25%. The treatment of IBR is still controversial. We aimed to design an algorithm for the treatment of hepatic hydatidosis with IBR by reviewing our ***: Eight cases of IBR were analyzed *** were evaluated according to age, sex, clinical findings, cyst number and stage, abdominal ultrasonography and CT-scan, surgical methods, complica-tions, results and coincidental ***: Female/male ratio was 1/7. Mean age was 52.12±18.26 years (range 24-69 years). Right upper quadrant pain, flatulence, palpable hepatic mass were symptoms common in all patients. Cholestatic jaundice was found in four cases. In all patients, cyst evacuation and omento-plasty were performed, followed by either choledochod-uodenostomy, T-tube drainage, intracavitary suturing of the orifice, two cases in each. Whereas in two patients diagnosed post-operatively percutaneous drainage of biliary collection or ERCP and sphincteroplasty were added. Morbidity and hospital stay were higher in these ***: When the diagnosis of IBR can be done pre-or intra-operatively, morbidity decreases. If a biliary fistula is seen post-operatively, endoscopic procedures such as ERCP, sphincteroplasty or nasobiliary drainage can be applied.

Preliminary Study on the Effective Microbial Supplementation of Feed on the Infection of Salmonella in Two Lymph Nodes of Beef Cattle in Eastern Ethiopia

A double-blinded randomized controlled field trial based on parallel group design was conducted from January, 2018 to July, 2018 in Chercher Oda-Bultum Farmers Union beef Farm. The present study was conducted to evaluate the roll of effective microbial supplementation to feed on the infection of Salmonella in the mesenteric and sub-iliac lymph nodes of beef cattle. In order to undertake the study, 130 beef cattle kept by the farm were used to establish a cohort. The study animals were randomly assigned to the treatment group (n = 100) and control group (n = 30). The feed of treatment group was mixed with EM at dose of 5× 1010 cfu/day/head for 90, 100 and 115 days while that of the control group was mixed with molasses, which acts as placebo. Both the treatment and control were slaughtered and two lymph nodes were collected from each animal under strict sterile condition and processed for the isolation and identification of Salmonella using standard procedure. The occurrence of Salmonella was 70% (CI = 51% - 85%) in control group while it was 33% (CI = 24% - 43%) in treatment group. The difference in the proportion of Salmonella infection in the two group was significant (x2 = 13.01;p = 0.000). The relative risk of Salmonella isolation in the control was 2.12 (1.41 - 3.20) compared to treatment group. The absolute and relative risk reduction in the treatment were 37% (CI = 17% - 57%) and 53% (CI = 29% - 69%), respectively. This preliminary study indicated that effective microbial supplementation of beef cattle feed reduced the occurrences of Salmonella in the lymph node of beef cattle, thereby potentially minimizing the economic and public health impacts of Salmonella infection. Then, it was recommended to use EM as prevention and control option in Salmonella carriage in cattle.
