Maize Storage and c.nsumption Prac.ic.s of Farmers in Handeni Distric., Tanzania: c.rollaries for Myc.toxin c.ntamination

In Tanzania, maize is the main c.mplementary food for infants and primary sc.ool c.ildren. Dietary exposure to myc.toxins through c.mplementary foods by Tanzanian infants is of c.nc.rn. The maize storage and c.nsumption prac.ic.s of farmers in Handeni Distric., Tanzania and their implic.tions for myc.toxin c.ntamination of maize flour were investigated. A c.nvenient sample of 60 farmers in Seza Kofi and Kwabojo villages in Mgambo and Ndolwa wards were surveyed. The majority of farmers (95%) stored their maize in the house using the roofing and sac. methods. Most farmers (67%) did not visually or mec.anic.lly sort defec.ive maize kernels before storage. In both villages, the most important storage problems reported by the farmers were rodents and insec.s. Forty two perc.nt of the farmers surveyed indic.ted that they c.nsumed dehulled maize, while 35 and 12% c.nsumed non-dehulled and mixed (dehulled and non-dehulled), respec.ively. The preponderanc. of storage prac.ic.s desc.ibed was unfavorable to myc.toxin reduc.ion in stored maize. It is therefore rec.mmended that appropriate, area-spec.fic.farmer training regarding rec.mmended storage prac.ic.s inc.uding storage methods, effec.ive management of storage pests and healthy maize preparation and c.nsumption prac.ic.s be c.nduc.ed. Additionally, further researc. on maize storage and c.nsumption prac.ic.s for Tanzania is needed.
