Performance Evaluation of a Micro-Steam Turbine Powered Electric Generator under Changeable Bed and Drive Mechanisms

Machines are growth engines of the economy;each sector of the economy achieves its demand by the use of the machine. They are installed in various establishments for the purpose of using them to perform certain functions or others. However, as a result of the kind of forces, dynamic and static loads, they transmitted to their adjoining surroundings when used, they are often mounted on supporting structures, foundations or a combination of them to achieve adequate or appropriate safe operation and stability. When a machine is operating, it is subjected to several time-varying forces and as a result of which it tends to exhibit vibrations. In such a situation or process, a certain quantity of this force is transmitted to the foundation, which could undermine the life of the foundation and also affect its performance and the operation of any other machines on the same foundation. Hence, it makes sense to minimize this force transmission. This research aimed at developing an adjustable steel-framed structure for supporting the major components of a 5.0 kW micro-steam power unit (steam, turbine and alternator) and evaluating the performance of the unit with or without the vibration isolator when they are axially connected with flexible flange coupling or transversely connected with sets of belts and pulleys, in succession, respectively. The results showed that reduction in the force transmitted to the supporting structure occurred when the vibration produced by the unit is isolated from its base by the use of a vibration isolator, maximum reduction of 99.95% achieved when axially coupled and 99.91% when transversely connected with belt and pulley system. The results also showed that better performance would be attained when the steam turbine is axially coupled to the alternator than when connected with belt and pulley;The maximum voltage of 52 V and speed of 1000 rpm at 77 dB sound level attained with coupling connection, and voltage of 20 V and speed of 752 rpm at 75 dB

Objective:To evaluate the success rate of tuberculosis intervention programme at a specialist hospital in(?)badan,Nigeria through a retrospective study as well as carry out physicochemical evaluation of anti-tuberculous agents as a way of eliminating drug-related ***:The retrospective study involved the use of quarterly tuberculosis central register at the Government Chest Hospital,(?)badan between 1st quarter(2003)to 4th quarter(2009).Relevant data were extracted from these register with the aid of data collection *** basic physicochemical analyses of the drugs given to the patients were also carried out using the International Pharmacopoeia ***:All the drugs examined for their physicochemical properties passed the International Pharmacopeia recommended tests.A total number of 1 260 patients enrolled at the hospital were assessed through case *** comprises of 59.4%males of which69.23%new cases were also *** was a significant(P0.05).Failure rates in all categories were higher in males than females(P>0.05).Conclusions:More enlightenment and counseling is still required to meet up with the target for TB control.

Objective:To investigate the possible mechanisms of the decreasing fluid and food consumption following Hibiscus sabdariffa(HS) ***:On the 1st day of pregnancy,rats were randomly divided into three groups with six animals per each *** group was given tap water,one was given with extract at 0.6 g/100 mL while the third group was given with extract at 1.8 g/100 mL as their drinking *** groups received normal rat chow and drinking solution ad ***& food intake and weight were measured daily throughout pregnancy and Na^+ concentration in plasma was determined on the 18th day of ***:Results showed decreased fluid and food consumption,decreased weight gain and increased sodium ion concentration in plasma of rats with HS extract compared with the control ***: Consumption of aqueous extract of the calyx of HS during pregnancy decreases food consumption and weight gain through mechanisms that may depend on Na^+ in HS content and elevating Na^+ concentration.

C-glycosyl flavonoid orientin alleviates learning and memory impairment by radiofrequency electromagnetic radiation in mice via improving antioxidant defence mechanism

Objective: To investigate the antioxidant efficacy of oral orientin on 900 MHz radiofrequencyelectromagnetic radiation-induced oxidative stress in ***: The mice were randomly allotted into 5 groups consisting of 7 mice each. The deionised water and radiofrequency electromagnetic radiations(RF-EMR) groups were administered with deionised water while orientin was administered to the RF-EMR + low dose of orientin group(10 mg/kg), RF-EMR + high dose of orientin group(20 mg/kg) and high dose of orientin group(20 mg/kg). All the groups except deionised water and high dose groups were exposed to 900 MHz radiofrequency-electromagnetic radiation for 28 consecutive days(1 h/day). Learning and memory was assessed via the step-down inhibitory avoidance task. Activities of lipid prexidation and antioxidant enzymes were measured using ***: Radiofrequency electromagnetic radiation caused impairment in learning and memory and reduced activities of brain antioxidant enzymes, increased lipoperoxidation and corticosterone concentration as well as histopathological aberrations in the hippocampal tissues. Conversely, orientin alleviated learning and memory deficit, improved the activities of endogenous antioxidant enzymes and mitigated brain lipoperoxidation and neuronal degeneration in mice exposed to radiofrequency electromagnetic radiation. Conclusions: Orientin alleviates learning and memory impairment due to radiofrequency electromagnetic radiation in mice by improving antioxidant defence mechanism and may be considered as a promising therapeutic agent for improving the antioxidant system of people living in radiofrequency electromagnetic radiation-prone environment.

Paleo-productivity and petroleum source evaluation of the Nkporo and Awgu shales, Lower Benue Trough, Nigeria: Insight from inorganic geochemistry

The petroleum paleo-productivity and generative potential of the Nkporo and Awgu shales in the Lower Benue Trough (LBT) were studied. Major oxides were determined using Spectro Ciros Inductively-coupled plasma optical emission spectrometer (ICP-OES) while trace and rare earth elements were determined using an ELAN 9000 Inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometer (ICP-MS). The shales have Co/Ni ratios greater than 0.1 suggesting oil source rocks with more marine source input due to brief marine incursion in the transition zone after deposition. The very low Ni values and moderate V values, and a lack of correlation between the TOC and sulphur content, suggests that the organic matter is of terrestrial Type Ⅲ;and the very low paleo-productivity (Ba/Al and P/Ti ratios) suggests that the organic matter is of terrestrial origin. The low V/Ni values of the Nkporo and Awgu shales (Av. ≈ 4) and the high metal concentrations indicate a matured status. From the K/Rb ratios of the Nkporo (191–259) and Awgu shales (198–261), it can be deduced that the organic matter within the shales experienced a considerable loss of K and the shales are mature to generate gaseous hydrocarbons.

Impact of community-based rehabilitation on quality of life and self-esteem of persons with physical disabilities and their family members

Objective:Community-based rehabilitation(CBR)is a strategy by which persons living with disability(PWDs)access comprehensive rehabilitation services with limited evidence regarding its impact on the quality of life(QOL)and self-esteem(SE)of PWDs and their family *** study compared the QOL and SE of Nigerian PWDs in communities with and without a CBR programme(CBR and non-CBR respectively),and the family quality of life(FQOL)of their family ***:Cross-sectional study involving 2604 PWDs(1302 in CBR and 1302 in non-CBR);5208 family members of PWDs(2604 in CBR and 2604 non-CBR),recruited from four randomly selected geo-political zones in Nigeria,purposive/consecutive selection of eight CBR programmes,PWDs and their family members(CBR and non-CBR).Outcomes assessed using Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale(RSES),World Health Organization Quality of Life Instrument-short form(WHOQOL-BREF)and Beach Centre Family Quality of Life Instrument(BCFQOL).Mann-Whitney U test and Spearman's rank order correlation were used to analyse data at P<***:PWDs in CBR scored higher in all domains of WHOQOL-BREF(P<0.0001 in all cases)and RSES than non-CBR group(P<0.0001).The CBR families scored significantly higher than non-CBR families in all domains(P<0.05)except Emotional Well-Being of the *** CBR group scores on Psychological and Social Health domains of the WHOQOL-BREF showed significant positive correlation with CBR families'Family Interaction(P=0.06)and Parenting(P=0.07)domains and total FQOL(P=0.07).Conclusion:Community-based rehabilitation positively impacted on SE and QOL of PWDs and their family members.

Absorption Studies of Arsenic Using Maghemite Crystals Synthesized from Iron Waste Extracted from Ogun State Iron Mill Dumpsite

This paper outlines the synthesis of maghemite from raw iron waste obtained in an iron mill dumpsite around Ogun state, Nigeria. Magnetite was synthesized from the ferrous precursor obtained by digesting the iron waste with concentrated H2SO4. Transformation of magnetite to maghemite was done by heating the magnetite obtained in an oven at 200°C. To determine the absorption capacity of the synthesized maghemite sample, a stock solution of As(III) was used for the absorption. Absorption spectrum shows higher absorption of γ-Fe3O4 at higher concentration of As(III). Maximum absorption obtained is 14 mg/g. Estimated yield of γ-Fe3O4 was 32%;however a low, further study promises to improve the yield value. The study shows γ-Fe3O4 to be a good absorbent for heavy metals.

Establishment of a male fertility prediction model with sperm RNA markers in pigs as a translational animal model

Background:Male infertility is an important issue that causes low production in the animal *** solve the male fertility crisis in the animal industry,the prediction of sperm quality is the most important *** RNA is the potential marker for male fertility *** hypothesized that the expression of functional genes related to fertilization will be the best target for male fertility prediction *** investigate optimum male fertility prediction marker,we compared target genes expression level and a wide range of field data acquired from artificial insemination of boar ***:Among the genes related to acrosomal vesicle exocytosis and sperm–oocyte fusion,equatorin(EQTN),zona pellucida sperm-binding protein 4(ZP4),and sperm acrosome membrane-associated protein 3 exhibited high accuracy(70%,90%,and 70%,respectively)as markers to evaluate male *** of EQTN-ZP4,ZP4-protein unc-13 homolog B,and ZP4-regulating synaptic membrane exocytosis protein 1(RIMS1)showed the highest prediction value,and all these markers are involved in the acrosome ***:The EQTN-ZP4 model was efficient in clustering the high-fertility group and may be useful for selection of animal that has superior fertility in the livestock *** to the EQTN-ZP4 model,the ZP4-RIMS1 model was more efficient in clustering the low-fertility group and may be useful in the diagnosis of male infertility in humans and other *** appointed translational animal model and established biomarker combination can be widely used in various scientific fields such as biomedical science.

Enzymes inhibitory property,antioxidant activity and phenolics profile of raw and roasted red sorghum grains in vitro

Whole grain cereals are important dietary sources for management of metabolic diseases due to the bioactive components they ***,this study investigated enzymes(pancreatic lipase,-amylase,-glucosidase,xanthine oxidase and angiotensin 1-converting enzyme)inhibitory property,antioxidant activity and phenolics profile of raw and roasted red sorghum(Sorghum bicolor)grains in *** of flours of raw and roasted(150◦C and 180◦C,for 20 min)grains were assayed for enzymes inhibitory and antioxidant activities using spectrophotometric methods;while their phenolic constituents were characterized using *** raw grains exhibited strong enzymes inhibitory and antioxidant activities,and contained phenolic acids(gallic,chlorogenic,caffeic,ellagic and p-coumaric acids)and flavonoids(quercetin,luteolin and apigenin).However,whereas the enzymes inhibitory activity and levels of the phenolic compounds in the grains decreased significantly(p<0.05)with increasing roasting temperature,the antioxidant activity ***,roasting at high temperature may not be recommended for the optimum retention of the enzymes inhibitory property and phenolic compounds of red sorghum grains.

Groundwater Contaminated by Nitrates--A Case Study of Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State, Southwestern Nigeria

Nitrate is one of the problematic and wide spread contaminations. Indiscriminate disposition of human and animal wastes in Nigeria especially in urban region, and lack of proper environmental sanitation geared the need for the monitoring of groundwater contamination. This research work monitored the concentration of nitrate and nitrate-nitrogen in portable water from wells in Odo Ado, Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State, and examined the relationship between this concentration and the well depth as well as its nature （ringing）. The results showed that out of 20 water wells sampled, 50% of samples contain high level of nitrate with the highest having concentration of 140 mg/L and least 49 mg/L while the remaining has acceptable concentration ranging between 3.5 mg/L and 35 mg/L with most ringed wells. The mean concentration of nitrates is 48.06 mg/L and the nitrate-nitrogen is 10.85 mg/L. The statistical correlation between the concentrations and depth showed that there is a significant difference between their means at 95% confidence using T-test. Out of ringed wells, five have high concentration and eight have low concentrations while two of the wells （not ringed） fall below the acceptable limit （EPA） which indicates that there are other factors such as closeness to the point source and soil texture which were not considered in this work.
