Porosity and Pore Networks in Tight Dolostone—Mudstone Reservoirs:Insights from the Devonian Three Forks Formation,Williston Basin,USA

This study was performed to evaluate pore systems of reservoir lithofacies within the Devonian Three Forks Formation in the Williston Basin through micro-scale pore *** lithofacies are from the Upper Three Forks section,which is a prominent drilling target within the BakkenThree Forks Petroleum *** from the Formation were examined by(1)physical core description,(2)petrographic thin section microscopy,(3)x-ray diffractometry(XRD)minerals analysis,(4)scanning electron microscopy(SEM),and(5)porosity measurements from helium porosimetry,nuclear magnetic resonance(NMR),gas adsorption and mercury intrusion porosimetry(MIP).These were done to provide better understanding of the local variations in pore structures and how such structures impact reservoir quality within the Three Forks *** reservoir lithofacies were identified and described,including laminated lithofacies,massive dolostone,mottled dolostone,massive mudstone,mottled mudstone,mudstone conglomerates,and brecciated *** show a diverse variation in mineralogical composition,pore types,porosity,and pore-size *** types of pores were identified:interparticle,intercrystalline,intracrystalline,vuggy,microfractures,and mudstone ***-rich lithofacies have abundant dolomite and less siliciclastic minerals such as quartz,feldspar,and *** also have relatively low porosity and generally larger pore size.A general positive trend exists between porosity with clay minerals and feldspar,in contrast to a negative trend with dolomite,and no clear relationship with quartz *** from the gas adsorption analysis,NMR and MIP pore-size distribution confirm an abundance of macropores(>50 nm in diameters)in dolostone dominated lithofacies while other lithofacies generally have abundant mesopores(2–50 nm).

Microstructure Characterization of a Biogenic Shale Gas Formation——Insights from the Antrim Shale,Michigan Basin

Biogenic gas shales,predominantly microbial in origin,form an important class of organicrich shale reservoirs with a significant economic *** large gaps remain in the understanding of their gas generation,storage,and transport mechanisms,as previous studies have been largely focused on mature thermogenic shale *** this study,the pore structure of 18 Antrim Shale samples was characterized using gas adsorption(CO2 and N2).The results show that most of the Antrim Shale samples are rich in organic matter content(0.58 wt.%to 14.15 wt.%),with highest values found in the Lachine and Norwood *** from the Paxton Member,characterized by lower organic content,have smaller micropore surface area and micropore volume but larger meso-macro pore surface area and *** deconvolution results of the pore size distribution from the N2 adsorption indicate that all of the tested Antrim Shale samples have similar pore *** matter in the Antrim Shale hosts micro pores instead of meso-macro pores,while clay minerals host both micro and meso-macro *** pores play a primary role in the total *** biogenic Antrim Shale,therefore,has different pore structures from other well-studied thermogenic gas shales worldwide.

Assessment of Heavy Metal Exposure in Soils of Ihwrekreka Communities, Delta State, Nigeria

Crude oil pollution in the Niger Delta, perpetrated by both local communities and industrial actors, has brought about soil pollution with its consequent ecological, human health and food challenges. The purpose of this research was to examine the concentration and distribution of heavy metals in soil from communities contaminated by crude oil in Niger Delta, and to evaluate the potential health risks to residents from exposure to these contaminants. To achieve this, soil samples were collected from the Ihwrekreka community and analyzed for heavy metal content using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The analytical results in mg/kg revealed a significant metals pollution level derived from the oil spill in the soil ranging from 4.85 - 17,078 (Cu), 1.01 - 16.1 (Cd), 0.22 - 36.8 (Cr), 8.28 - 40.9 (Ni), 7.51 - 6474 (Pb), and 8.84 - 12,851 (Zn) respectively. Most of the metals were above the permissible limits of World Health Organization, with Cu, Zn, and Pb as the most contaminating metals. Lead was found to be the main contributor to the hazard index (HI) values for both children and adults in the study area, with its concentration exceeding the permitted limits set by the WHO and the EC. The hazard index (HI) values of Pb, Cu, Zn, Cd, Ni, and Cr were significantly higher than 1. These findings suggest that the release of heavy metals from an oil-contaminated site may pose a risk to human health and the environment.

Air Quality Assessment of Ubeji Community near Petroleum-Related Activities

The escalating global concern over air pollution requires rigorous investigations. This study assesses air quality near residential areas affected by petroleum-related activities in Ubeji Community, utilizing Aeroqual handheld mobile multi-gas monitors and air quality multi-meters. Air sampling occurred on three distinct days using multi-gas monitors and meters, covering parameters such as CO, NO2, CH4, NH3, VOCs, Particulate Matter, Temperature, Relative Humidity, and Air Quality Index. Soil and plant samples were collected and analyzed for physicochemical and organic components. Air pollutant concentrations showed significant fluctuations. Carbon monoxide (CO) ranged from 0.00 to 3.22 ppm, NO2 from 0.00 to 0.10 ppm, CH4 from 4.00 to 2083 ppm, NH3 from 371 to 5086 ppm, and VOCs from 414 to 6135 ppm. Soil analysis revealed low total nitrogen, and undetected BTEX levels. Plant samples displayed a pH range of 7.72 to 9.45. CO concentrations, although below WHO limits, indicated potential vehicular and industrial influences. Fluctuations in NO2 and CH4 were linked to traffic, industrial activities, and gas flaring. NH3 levels suggested diverse pollution sources. The result in this study highlights the dynamic nature of air pollution in Ubeji community, emphasizing the urgent need for effective pollution control measures. Although CO concentrations were within limits, continuous monitoring is essential. Elevated NO2 levels gave information on the impact of industrial activities, while high CH4 concentrations may be associated with gas flaring and illegal refining. The study recommends comprehensive measures and collaborative efforts to address these complex issues, safeguarding both the environment and public health. This study shows the potential synergy between air quality sensors and plants for holistic environmental health assessments, offering valuable insights for environmental assessments and remediation endeavours. Heavy Metal Levels and Ecological Risk in Crude Oil-Contaminated Soils from Okpare-Olomu, Niger Delta, Nigeria

Crude oil spills have inflicted extensive disruption upon the Niger Delta ecosystem, resulting in crop loss and severe environmental damage. Such spills exacerbate heavy metal concentration within soil due to the presence of metallic ions. The Okpare-Olomu community has borne the brunt of crude oil pollution from illicit bunkering, sabotage, and equipment malfunction. This study targets an evaluation of ecological hazards linked to heavy metals (HMs) in crude oil impacted agriculturally soils within Okpare-Olomu in Ughelli South LGA of Delta State. In this study, 24 topsoil samples were obtained from areas affected by crude oil pollution;the heavy metal content was evaluated through atomic absorption spectrometry. The concentration ranges for HMs (mg/kg) in soil were: 24.1 - 23,174 (Cu);0.54 - 37.1 (Cd);9.05 - 54 (Cr);12 - 174 (Ni);18.5 - 8611 (Pb);and 148 - 9078 (Zn) at a soil depth of 0 - 15 cm. Notably, metal concentrations were recorded to be above permissible World Health Organization limits. Predominantly, Zn and Pb recorded higher heavy metal concentration when compared to other heavy metals analysed, notably at sampling points PT7 through PT24. Zinc and Pb contamination exhibited highly significant contamination factors, and contamination severity was evidenced across all sample points, signifying a grave risk level. Pollution load indices indicated pervasive extreme pollution levels. Geoaccumulation indices signaled moderate to strong pollution, mainly by Pb and Zn. Ecological risk assessments revealed variable levels of heavy metal contamination, from low to very high, with potential ecological risk reflecting markedly elevated levels. This study underscores the imperative for soil remediation to rectify ecological imbalances in agriculturally affected soil constituents.

Background: Obesity has become a serious global public health challenge, given that it leads to various adverse health outcomes that include cardiovascular illnesses, diabetes, and certain types of cancer. The World Health Organization (WHO) has estimated that, at the end of 2022, 1 out of every 8 individuals were obese, and that the global adult obesity rates have over doubled since 1990, even as the adolescent obesity rates have quadrupled. Thus, as of 2022, nearly 2.5 billion adults, aged 18 years and above, were overweight, with 890 million being obese. Obesity and overweight incidence rate has been gradually increasing over the years, presenting significant challenges to the healthcare systems throughout the globe. In this regard, the objective of this systematic review was to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of lifestyle modifications (diet and physical activity) and pharmacotherapy in promoting weight loss and improving metabolic health in overweight adults. Methodology: To attain the above stated study objective, a systematic evaluation of previous studies was carried out, particularly studies that assessed the effectiveness and safety of lifestyle modifications (diet and physical activity) and pharmacotherapy in promoting weight loss and improving metabolic health in overweight adults. The authors have used the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) in the selection of eligible studies for inclusion in the study. Results: The findings indicate that lifestyle interventions resulted in 5% - 10% weight reduction and significant improvements in metabolic indicators, while pharmacotherapy (GLP-1 receptor agonists) achieved up to 15% weight reduction and considerable metabolic health benefits. Further, comparative studies show lifestyle modifications provide overall health benefits, while medication is necessary for non-responders. Conclusion: Individualized treatment strategies are crucial, and further research is needed

Biomedical applications of magneto-responsive scaffolds

Stimuli-responsive biomaterials, capable of responding on-demand to changes in their local environment, have become a subject of interest in the field of regenerative medicine. Magneto-responsive biomaterials, which can be manipulated spatiotemporally via an external magnetic field, have emerged as promising candidates as active scaffolds for advanced drug delivery and tissue regeneration applications. These specialized biomaterials can be synthesized by physically and/or chemically incorporating magnetic nanoparticles into the biomaterial structure. However, despite their promising impact on the future of regenerative medicine, magneto-responsive biomaterials still have several limitations that need to be overcome before they can be implemented clinically in a reliable manner, as predicting their behavior and biocompatibility remains an ongoing challenge. This review article will focus on discussing the current fabrication methods used to synthesize magneto-responsive materials, efforts to predict and characterize magneto-responsive biomaterial behavior, and the application of magneto-responsive biomaterials as controlled drug delivery systems, tissue engineering scaffolds, and artificial muscles.

Objective： Anocardium occidentale L. leaf is useful in the treatment of inflammation and asthma, but the bioactive constituents responsible for these activities have not been characterized. Therefore, this study was aimed at identifying the bioactive constituent（s） ofA. occidentale ethanolic leaf extract （AOEL） and its solvent-soluble portions, and evaluating their effects on histamine-induced paw edema and bronchocon- striction. Methods： The bronchodilatory effect was determined by measuring the percentage protection provided by plant extracts in the histamine-induced bronchoconstriction model in guinea pigs. The anti- inflammatory effect of the extracts on histamine-induced paw edema in rats was determined by measur- ing the increase in paw diameter, after which the percent edema inhibition was calculated. The extracts were analyzed using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry to identify the bioactive constituents. Column chromatography and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy were used respectively to isolate and characterize the constituents. The bronchodilatory and anti-inflammatory activities of the isolated bioactive constituent were evaluated. Results： Histamine induced bronchoconstriction in the guinea pigs and edema in the rat paw. AOEL, hexane-soluble portion of AOEL, ethyl acetate-soluble portion of AOEL, and chloroform-soluble portion of AOEL significantly increased bronchodilatory and anti-inflammatory activities （P 〈 0.05）. Oleamide （9-octadecenamide） was identified as the most abundant compound in the extracts and was isolated. Oleamide significantly increased bronchodilatory and anti-inflammatory activities by 32.97% and 98.41%, respectively （P 〈 0.05）. Conclusion： These results indicate that oleamide is one of the bioactive constituents responsible for the bronchodilatory and anti-inflammatory activity of A. occidentale leaf, and can therefore be employed in the management of bronchoconstriction and inflammation.

Assessment of the impact of climate change on the occurrences of malaria,pneumonia,meningitis,and cholera in Lokoja City,Nigeria

This study examined the impact of climate change on the occurrence of malaria,pneumonia,meningitis,and cholera in Lokoja City,Nigeria,with the aim of investigating the spatial distribution and prevalence of the four kinds of diseases as well as the coping strategies of people in the *** collected the rainfall and temperature data of Lokoja City during 2000-2020 from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration(NASA),and the medical records data of the four kinds of diseases from the Kogi State Ministry of *** also conducted a semi-structured questionnaire of 250 residents,who have experienced one of these diseases,to investigate their coping strategies with these *** Pearson correlation and multiple regression analysis were used to research the relationship between the climate parameters and cases of *** result showed annual variations in climatic parameters with R^(2)values of 0.0557,0.0009,and 0.4915 for rainfall,maximum temperature,and minimum temperature,respectively.A positive and significant relationship were observed between maximum temperature and malaria(r=0.80),rainfall and malaria(r=0.54),minimum temperature and meningitis(r=0.64),as well as rainfall and cholera(r=0.66)at P<0.05 *** the regression analysis R^(2)=0.71,0.50,and 0.52 for malaria,cholera,and meningitis,respectively at P<0.05 *** 2000-2020,cases of malaria were highest in Ward A with 15,422,while 715 cases of pneumonia were highest in Kupa North *** Ward A,3787 cases of cholera were recorded to be the highest,while cases of meningitis were highest in Kupa North Ward with 2383 *** revealed that malaria is more common in the wet season,while cholera and meningitis cases were highest in the dry *** study revealed that the most practiced coping strategy is the use of medications by about 90%of the *** studies are recommended in the study area to establish a causal link between climate change and disease occurre
