Machine learning techniques have become ubiquitous both in industry and academic *** model sizes and training data volumes necessitate fast and efficient distributed training *** communications greatly simplify inter-and intra-node data transfer and are an essential part of the distributed training process as information such as gradients must be shared between processing *** this paper,we survey the current state-of-the-art collective communication libraries(namely xCCL,including NCCL,oneCCL,RCCL,MSCCL,ACCL,and Gloo),with a focus on the industry-led ones for deep learning *** investigate the design features of these xCCLs,discuss their use cases in the industry deep learning workloads,compare their performance with industry-made benchmarks(i.e.,NCCL Tests and PARAM),and discuss key take-aways and interesting *** believe our survey sheds light on potential research directions of future designs for xCCLs.

Gasification experiments were carried out in a pilot scale fluid bed reactor operated under allothermal mode and low fluidisation regime with iron-doped olivine and char as catalyst for in-situ tar *** catalyst combination resulted in a reduction of 50%in the overall tar yield with respect to the reference ***,the integration of an oxidative Hot Gas Filtration unit downstream the gasification reactor led to a further reduction in overall tar yield and relatively clean gas was obtained(approx.1 g/Nm3,benzene-free).The tar dew point of the resulting producer gas was estimated to 80℃,only 40℃ above the threshold value recommended for its valorisation in standard internal combustion ***,catalyst elutriation and char hold-up took place to a large extent inside the *** analysis of catalyst samples at different Time-On-Stream(TOS)revealed:(i)a considerable loss of iron oxides during the first hour of test because of the interparticle mechanical attrition(mostly surface abrasion)and partial reduction of hematite to magnetite and wustite but,stable composition at higher TOS,(ii)the loss of the iron oxide coverage of Fe/olivine particles and the formation of agglomerates with increasing TOS and,(iii)the amount of carbon deposited in the surface of the Fe/olivine particles increased with TOS,but in any case,these carbon deposits can be completely oxidized above 650℃.

Reevaluation of dialect boundaries in the Yellowhammer(Emberiza citrinella)based on citizen science data:Should we split or lump?

Dialects are a specific form of geographic variation of birdsong with relatively sharp boundaries between distinct song characteristics,which provide opportunities for focused studies of processes underlying the emergence of spatial patterns in *** songbird species that exhibit dialects became models for such research,and for some of them large-scale datasets were assembled that included recordings provided by the *** them,the Yellowhammer(Emberiza citrinella,Emberizidae) is particularly prominent,as it has been recently a subject of dedicated citizen science projects focusing on its dialect *** most successful,in terms of public participation as well as the number and density of obtained recordings,was the Dialects of Czech Yellowhammers(DCY) project,which assembled detailed data at the whole-country level.A mosaic of almost all common song variants known across Europe was observed in Czechia,but the results indicated that some of the traditionally recognized Yellowhammer dialects may not represent geographically clustered song variants,at least not in Central *** quantitatively analysed variation(frequency and temporal characteristics and modulation) of the terminal song element in three dialects defined by arbitrary frequency thresholds in *** analyses indicated that pooling these to two distinct groups reflects the variation in the songs,as well as their spatial distribution,better than retaining the current classification to three dialects or their finer splitting to even more *** provide simple measures that may be used for classification of these Yellowhammer song variants in Central ***,we warn from indiscriminate transposing of results from one region to another,as that may lead to substantial *** studies of birdsong variation will benefit from big data assembled by citizen scientists,but to maximise their usefulness for further dialect research,careful delineation of d

Rice is often grown as multiple seasons in one year,alternating between flooded and upland systems.A major constraint,introduced from the flooded system,is a plough pan that may decrease rooting depth and productivity of follow-on upland *** penetrating the plough pan under flooded rice system can leave a legacy of weaker root growth *** rooting rice cultivars could have a bigger impact,but no direct evidence is *** explore whether a deep rather than a shallow rooting rice cultivar grown in a flooded cropping cycle benefited deeper root growth of follow-on rice in an upland,reduced tillage cropping cycle,a simulated flooded paddy in greenhouse was planted with deep(Black Gora) and shallow(IR64) rooting cultivars and a plant-free *** plough pans were made in between the topsoil and subsoil to form different treatments with no plough pan(0.35 MPa),soft plough pan(1.03 MPa) and hard plough pan(1.70 MPa).After harvest of this ‘first season’ rice,the soil was drained and undisturbed to simulate zero-tillage upland and planted rice cultivar BRRI Dhan *** overall root length density(RLD),root surface area,the numbers of root tips and branching of BRRI Dhan 28 did not vary between plough pan and no plough pan *** with the shallow rooting rice genotype,the deep rooting rice genotype as ‘first season’ crop produced 19% greater RLD,34% greater surface area and 29% more branching of BRRI Dhan 28 in the *** the topsoil,however,BRRI Dhan 28 had 28% greater RLD,35% greater surface area and 43% more branching for the shallow rather than deep rooting genotype planted in the ‘first season’.The results suggested that rice cultivar selection for a paddy cycle affects root growth of a follow-on rice crop grown under no-till,with benefits to subsoil access from deep rooting cultivars and topsoil proliferation for shallow rooting cultivars.

Background Prestroke physical activity(PA)has been linked to improved outcomes after intracerebral haemorrhage(ICH),but its association with ICH volume is *** aimed to investigate associations of prestroke PA with location-specific haematoma volume and the clinical outcome of *** All patients with primary ICH,admitted to three hospitals between 2014 and 2019,were *** performing light PA≥4 hour/week the year before stroke were considered physically *** volumes were assessed from admission brain *** associations were estimated using multivariate linear and logistic regression *** volume was explored as mediator to the relationship between prestroke PA and mild stroke severity(0-4 points on the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale),a good 1-week functional status(0-3 points on the modified Rankin Scale)and 90-day *** direct effects(ADE)and average causal mediation effects(ACME)were *** Of 686 primary ICH cases,349 were deep,240 lobar and 97 *** PA predicted smaller haematoma volumes in deep ICH(β=−0.36,SE=0.09,p<0.001)and lobar ICH(β=−0.23,SE=0.09,p=0.016).Prestroke PA was also associated with mild stroke severity(OR 2.53,95%CI 1.59 to 4.01),a good 1-week functional status(OR 2.12,95%CI 1.37 to 3.30)and 90-day survival(OR 3.48,95%CI 2.06 to 5.91).Haematoma volume partly mediated the relationships between PA and stroke severity(ADE 0.08,p=0.004;ACME 0.10,p<0.001),1-week functional status(ADE 0.07,p=0.03;ACME 0.10,p<0.001)and 90-day survival(ADE 0.14,p<0.001;ACME 0.05,p<0.001).Conclusions Light PA≥4 hour/week prior to ICH was associated with smaller haematoma volumes in deep and lobar *** active patients with ICH had a higher likelihood of mild stroke,a good 1-week functional status and 90-day survival,in part mediated by smaller haematoma volumes on admission.

The Poso Depression provides a record of Plio-Pleistocene environments and palaeogeography of Central ***-based sedimentological and provenance studies suggest that during the Pliocene the Poso Depression was a sea channel connecting Gorontalo and Bone bays formed in an asymmetric *** Pliocene history began with deposition of the Puna Formation with fan deltas at the eastern basin margin and channel complexes in the deep-water basin further *** of light and heavy minerals indicate the main sediment source was ultrabasic rocks in East Sulawesi with minor and intermittent magmatic and metamorphic input from West ***,in the Middle to Late Pliocene,carbonates of the Poso Formation accumulated on the eastern basin *** are unconformably overlain by shallow marine glaucophane-rich siliciclastics of the Pleistocene Lage Formation that are associated with the rapid exhu-mation and uplift of the Pompangeo metamorphic *** uplift led to the development of a land bridge connecting western and eastern *** terrane evolution favoured increasing the area of exposed land due to rapid tectonic uplift,which when combined with the tropical climate,contributed to faunal speciation and dispersal in Sulawesi.

The upper mixed layer depth(h)has a significant seasonal variation in the real ocean and the low-order statistics of Langmuir turbulence are dramatically influenced by the upper mixed layer *** explore the influence of the upper mixed layer depth on Langmuir turbulence under the condition of the wind and wave equilibrium,the changes of Langmuir turbulence characteristics with the idealized variation of the upper mixed layer depth from very shallow(h=5 m)to deep enough(h=40 m)are studied using a non-hydrostatic large eddy simulation *** simulation results show that there is a direct entrainment depth induced by Langmuir turbulence(h_(LT))within the *** normalized depthaveraged vertical velocity variance is smaller and larger than the downwind velocity variance for the ratio of the upper mixed layer to a direct entrainment depth induced by Langmuir turbulence h/h_(LT)1,respectively,indicating that turbulence characteristics have the essential change(i.e.,depth-averaged vertical velocity variance(DAVV)DADV for Langmuir turbulence)between h/h_(LT)*** rate of change of the normalized depth-averaged low-order statistics for h/h_(LT)*** reason is that the downward pressure perturbation induced by Langmuir cells is strongly inhibited by the upward reactive force of the strong stratified thermocline for h/h_(LT)***,the upper mixed layer depth has significant influences on Langmuir turbulence characteristics.
