Effects of Root Growth of Deep and Shallow Rooting Rice Cultivars in Compacted Paddy Soils on Subsequent Rice Growth

Rice is often grown as multiple seasons in one year,alternating between flooded and upland systems.A major constraint,introduced from the flooded system,is a plough pan that may decrease rooting depth and productivity of follow-on upland *** penetrating the plough pan under flooded rice system can leave a legacy of weaker root growth *** rooting rice cultivars could have a bigger impact,but no direct evidence is *** explore whether a deep rather than a shallow rooting rice cultivar grown in a flooded cropping cycle benefited deeper root growth of follow-on rice in an upland,reduced tillage cropping cycle,a simulated flooded paddy in greenhouse was planted with deep(Black Gora) and shallow(IR64) rooting cultivars and a plant-free *** plough pans were made in between the topsoil and subsoil to form different treatments with no plough pan(0.35 MPa),soft plough pan(1.03 MPa) and hard plough pan(1.70 MPa).After harvest of this ‘first season’ rice,the soil was drained and undisturbed to simulate zero-tillage upland and planted rice cultivar BRRI Dhan *** overall root length density(RLD),root surface area,the numbers of root tips and branching of BRRI Dhan 28 did not vary between plough pan and no plough pan *** with the shallow rooting rice genotype,the deep rooting rice genotype as ‘first season’ crop produced 19% greater RLD,34% greater surface area and 29% more branching of BRRI Dhan 28 in the *** the topsoil,however,BRRI Dhan 28 had 28% greater RLD,35% greater surface area and 43% more branching for the shallow rather than deep rooting genotype planted in the ‘first season’.The results suggested that rice cultivar selection for a paddy cycle affects root growth of a follow-on rice crop grown under no-till,with benefits to subsoil access from deep rooting cultivars and topsoil proliferation for shallow rooting cultivars.

Genomic Prediction of Arsenic Tolerance and Grain Yield in Rice: Contribution of Trait-Specific Markers and Multi-Environment Models

Many rice-growing areas are affected by high concentrations of arsenic(As).Rice varieties that prevent As uptake and/or accumulation can mitigate As threats to human *** selection is known to facilitate rapid selection of superior genotypes for complex *** explored the predictive ability(PA)of genomic prediction with single-environment models,accounting or not for trait-specific markers,multi-environment models,and multi-trait and multi-environment models,using the genotypic(1600K SNPs)and phenotypic(grain As content,grain yield and days to flowering)data of the Bengal and Assam Aus *** the base-line single-environment model,PA of up to 0.707 and 0.654 was obtained for grain yield and grain As content,respectively;the three prediction methods(Bayesian Lasso,genomic best linear unbiased prediction and reproducing kernel hilbert spaces)were considered to perform similarly,and marker selection based on linkage disequilibrium allowed to reduce the number of SNP to 17K,without negative effect on PA of genomic ***-environment models giving distinct weight to trait-specific markers in the genomic relationship matrix outperformed the base-line models up to 32%.Multi-environment models,accounting for genotype×environment interactions,and multi-trait and multi-environment models outperformed the base-line models by up to 47%and 61%,*** the multi-trait and multi-environment models,the Bayesian multi-output regressor stacking function obtained the highest predictive ability(0.831 for grain As)with much higher efficiency for computing *** findings pave the way for breeding for As-tolerance in the progenies of biparental crosses involving members of the Bengal and Assam Aus *** prediction can also be applied to breeding for other complex traits under multiple environments.

Trace element characteristics of partial melts produced by melting of metabasalts at high pressures: Constraints on the formation condition of adakitic melts

Experiments were conducted on a natural basalt (with 5 wt.% added h2O) at 1.0―2.5 GPa and 900―1100℃. Experimental products include partial melts (quenched glasses) + residual mineral assemblages of amphibolite or eclogite. Electron microprobe and LAM-ICP-MS were used to determine major and trace element compositions of these quenched melts, respectively. Major ele- ment compositions of all the melts are tonalitic- trondhjemitic, similar to adakite. Their trace element characteristics are controlled by coexisting residual minerals. Signatures of adakite such as high Sr/Y, low hREE and negative Nb-Ta anomaly, etc. are present only in the melts coexisting with residual assemblages containing rutile and garnet (rutile-bearing eclogite or rutile-bearing amphibole-eclogite). Garnet leads to hREE depletion in melts, whereas rutile controls Nb and Ta partitioning during the partial melting and causes negative Nb-Ta anomaly in melts. Therefore, in addition to garnet, rutile is also a necessary residual phase during the generation of adakite or TTG magmas to account for the negative Nb-Ta anomaly of the magmas. The depth for the generation of adakite/TTG magmas via melting of metabasalt must be more than about 50 km based on the approximate 1.5 GPa mini- mum-pressure for rutile stability in the partial melting field of hydrous basalt.

Talin and kindlin： the one-two punch in integrin activation

Proper cell-cell and cell-matrix contacts mediated by integrin adhesion receptors are important for development, immune response, hemostasis and wound healing. Integrins pass trans-membrane signals bidirectionally through their regulated affinities for extracellular ligands and intracellular signaling molecules. Such bidirectional signaling by integrins is enabled by the conformational changes that are often linked among extracellular, transmembrane and cytoplasmic domains. here, we review how talin-integrin and kindlin-integrin interactions, in cooperation with talin-lipid and kindlin-lipid interactions, regulate integrin affinities and how the progress in these areas helps us understand integrin-related diseases.

Visualization of Unsteady Gas/Vapor Expansion Flows

high speed expansion flows of pure vapors or gas/vapor mixtures are important to many technical applications, e.g. to steam turbines, jet engines, and for safety control of pressurized power *** sudden cooling of the fluid flow leads to condensation and nonequilibrium two-phase now with instabilities and periodic shock formation at mean frequencies of about 1 khz. Modelling and control of this dynamical problem is not only important with respect to erosion, it also may cause flutter excitation and serious demolition of technical facilities. In numerical simulations, the time dependent 2-D Elller equations collpled to four equations describing the process of homogeneous nucleation and droplet growth are solved by a MUSCL-type finite volume method. The results are compared with experiments carried out in an atmospheric supersonic wind tunnel. By application of this numerical method to internal flows (nozzles) we found different modes of instabilities including bifurcations. At the stability limit a sharp frequency minimum was found for symmetric oscillations in slender nozzles. It separates oscillation modes where the oncoming subsonic flow remains unchanged from the oscillatory state where a shock monotonically moves upstream into the oncoming flow. For different nozzles we detected a new unsymmetric oscillation mode with a complex system of upstream moving oblique shocks. here the frequency curve shows the typical structure of a bifurcation problem, which is definitely not controlled by viscous effects but by instabilities of the interaction of flow and phase transition process.

Distributional Considerations for Transboundary Risk Governance of Environmental Threats

Most policy analyses of both short-term and long-term disasters focus on aggregate impacts of their costs and the benefits of policy remedies. Distributional considerations relating to the costs of these disasters and the benefits of their risk management, however, are very important in many cases. This article examines two broad categories of cases in terms of distributional considerations. The first category is where transboundary considerations strongly affect risk governance, as in the case of climate change. The second relates to ordinary, short-term disasters, which include fewer, but still important, transboundary issues. Climate change policy requires information regarding the distribution of impacts and policy responses across countries because it is a global *** disasters involve transboundary considerations much less frequently, so the attention typically shifts to the distribution of benefits and costs within a jurisdiction. In both cases distributional information is needed to evaluate the equity of policies and to provide information for public participation in the policy process. This article offers modeling and policy approaches to address these issues.

Methane dehydroaromatization–A study on hydrogen use for catalyst reduction, role of molybdenum, the nature of catalyst support and significance of Bronsted acid sites

Methane dehydroaromatization was studied over Mo/SiO2 and Mo/hZSM-5 with different Mo loadings(2, 5, 10 wt%) at 973 K and 1023 K in a recirculating batch reactor. h2 pretreatment at 1023 K prior to methane activation has significantly improved the catalyst activity with increase in Mo loading and reduced the induction time on benzene formation in both Mo/SiO2 and Mo/hZSM-5. 10 wt% Mo/hZSM-5 gave a maximum methane conversion of 19% and ~67% benzene selectivity at 1023 K. The XRD analysis of used catalysts revealed that the Mo O3 species were converted to β-Mo2C phase. Studies on Mo/SiO2 catalysts showed that benzene was formed even in the absence of acidic zeolite sites. Reactions of ethylene in the presence of pure silica, hZSM-5 and in a blank reactor revealed that conversion of ethylene to aromatics was similar in case of the blank reactor and silica. Thus, it is believed that molybdenum carbide sites act as active sites only for C–h bond activation of methane and ethylene formation. Even though, ethylene can undergo subsequent oligomerization without any catalytic aid to form benzene at973 K and above addition of acidic zeolites improved the selectivity of benzene.
