Spectrum of Bladder Cancer Patients Morbidity and Mortality in a Tertiary Hospital of Northwestern Nigeria: A 7-Year Review

Background: Bladder cancer is a common cause of morbidity and mortality in our institution due to the late presentation. Morbidity is defined as a development of complications that may lead to mortality. Uraemia is a common presentation that constitutes a management challenge in our patients. We study the spectrum of morbidity and mortality in bladder cancer patients in our institution. Materials and Methods: This is a retrospective study of patients with clinical, radiological, cytological and or histological features of bladder cancer that had a morbidity and or mortality managed at Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital Sokoto from January 2011 to December, 2017. Data were retrieved from patients’ case notes via a proforma and analyzed using SPSS 20.0 version for windows. The results were presented in number percent, tables and chart. Results: There were morbidity and or mortality in 234 bladder cancer patients within the study period with a mean age of 48.4 ± 14.1 years and a range of 3 - 106 years. There were 219 males (91.5%) and 20 females (8.5%) with a male to female ratio of 11:1. There were haematuria and lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) in 230 patients (98.3%). There were necroturia ± weight loss and anorexia in 126 patients (53.8%). There was urinary tract infection (UTI) in 75 patients (32.1%), anaemia in 131 patients (56.0%) and uraemia in 161 patients (68.8%). Mortality was recorded in 84 patients (35.9%) which was due to uraemia in 52 patients (22.2%), urosepsis in 22 patients (9.4%) and anaemia in 8 patients (3.4%), intestinal obstruction and blood transfusion reaction in 1 patient each (0.4%). Conclusion: Anaemia, urosepsis and uraemia are the most common causes of morbidity and or mortality in bladder tumour patients in Sokoto. This poses great diagnostic and therapeutic dilemma to the urologist, patients and their relatives.

Metastatic Cervical and Supraclavicular Lymphadenopathy from Prostate Mimicking Lymphoma: A Case Series

Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer in men worldwide and the commonest cause of mortality in men. It is the commonest diagnosed cancer in African men. The earliest and common sites of metastasis are the axial skeleton and regional lymph nodes. Initial presentation of the metastatic disease with cervical or supraclavicular lymphadenopathy is rarely reported. We report 3 cases of metastatic cancer of the prostate presenting initially to physicians with huge cervical and supraclavicular lymph nodes enlargement which on biopsy revealed metastatic adenocarcinoma. On further evaluation, there were non-bothersome storage symptoms, elevated prostate specific antigen and abnormal digital rectal examination. Transrectal ultrasound (TRUS)-guided biopsy of hypoechoic nodules revealed high-grade adenocarcinoma of the prostate on histopathological examination. The cervical and supraclavicular lymphadenopathy resolved after commencement of androgen deprivation therapy. We advocate for prostate cancer screening in African men above 50 years of age presenting with cervical or supraclavicular lymphadenopthy to primary care physicians even in the absence of lower urinary tract symptoms.

In the artificial intelligence-driven modern wireless communication system,antennas are required to be reconfigurable in terms of size according to changing application ***,conventional antennas with constant phase distributions cannot achieve enhanced gains in different reconfigurable *** this paper,we propose a mechanically reconfigurable radiation array(RRA)based on miniaturized elements and a mechanically reconfigurable system to obtain gain-enhanced antennas in compact and deployed states.A five-element RRA with a phase-reconfigurable center element is designed and analyzed *** experimental sample has been fabricated,driven by a deployable frame with only one degree of freedom to realize the size and phase distribution reconfiguration simultaneously to validate the enhanced gains of *** proposed RRA can be tessellated into larger arrays to achieve higher gains in other frequency regimes,such as terahertz or photonics applications with nanometer fabrication technology.

Growth and nitrogen productivity of drip-irrigated winter wheat under different nitrogen fertigation strategies in the North China Plain

Excessive application of nitrogen (N) fertilizer is the main cause of N loss and poor use efficiency in winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) production in the North China Plain (NCP).Drip fertigation is considered to be an effective method for improving N use efficiency and reducing losses,while the performance of drip fertigation in winter wheat is limited by poor N scheduling.A two-year field experiment was conducted to evaluate the growth,development and yield of drip-fertigated winter wheat under different split urea (46%N,240 kg ha^(-1)) *** six treatments consisted of five fertigation N application scheduling programs and one slow-release fertilizer (SRF) *** five N scheduling treatments were N0–100 (0%at sowing and 100%at jointing/booting),N25–75 (25%at sowing and 75%at jointing and booting),N50–50(50%at sowing and 50%at jointing/booting),N75–25 (75%at sowing and 25 at jointing/booting),and N100–0 (100%at sowing and 0%at jointing/booting).The SRF (43%N,240 kg ha^(-1)) was only used as fertilizer at *** N application significantly (P<0.05) affected wheat grain yield,yield components,aboveground biomass (ABM),water use efficiency(WUE) and nitrogen partial factor productivity (NPFP).The N50–50 and SRF treatments respectively had the highest yield(8.84 and 8.85 t ha^(-1)),ABM (20.67 and 20.83 t ha^(-1)),WUE (2.28 and 2.17 kg m^(-3)) and NPFP (36.82 and 36.88 kg kg^(-1)).This work provided substantial evidence that urea-N applied in equal splits between basal and topdressing doses compete economically with the highly expensive SRF for fertilization of winter wheat *** the single-dose SRF could reduce labor costs involved with the traditional method of manual spreading,the drip fertigation system used in this study with the N50–50 treatment provides an option for farmers to maintain wheat production in the NCP.

Vesicle trafficking is an essential cellular process upon which many physiological processes of eukaryotic cells *** is usually the‘language’of communication among the components of the endomembrane system within a cell,between cells and between a cell and its external ***,cells have the potential to internalize membrane-bound vesicles from external sources by *** constantly interact with both mutualistic and pathogenic microbes.A large part of this interaction involves the exchange of transport vesicles between the plant cells and the ***,in a pathogenic interaction,the pathogen releases vesicles containing bioactive molecules that can modulate the host immunity when absorbed by the host *** response to this attack,the host cells similarly mobilize some vesicles containing pathogenesis-related compounds to the pathogen infection site to destroy the pathogen,prevent it from penetrating the host cell or annul its *** fact,vesicle trafficking is involved in nearly all the strategies of phytopathogen attack subsequent plant immune ***,this field of plant-pathogen interaction is still at its infancy when narrowed down to plant-fungal pathogen interaction in relation to exchange of transport ***,we summarized some recent and novel findings unveiling the involvement of transport vesicles as a crosstalk in plant-fungal phytopathogen interaction,discussed their significance and identified some knowledge gaps to direct future research in the *** roles of vesicles trafficking in the development of both organisms are also established.

钛和氧之间存在多种成键方式,但迄今为止,二氧化钛团簇均只有少数几种异构体被报道.与广泛使用的全局优化方法不同,本工作通过优化大量的随机初始结构,获得(TiO_(2))_(n)(n=2~8)团簇稳定异构体.首先利用PM6半经验方法对高达一万个以上的初始结构进行初步的优化筛选,并对筛选出的结构进行进一步的DFT计算以获得二氧化钛团簇的稳定异构体.利用这种策略,发现了大量未经报道的稳定异构体,并提出了(TiO_(2))_(5)和(TiO_(2))_(8)新的最稳定异构体.这些结构中包括含3个末端氧原子的异构体、含5配位氧原子和6配位钛原子的异构体等未经报道的新结构类型.与丰富成键特征相对应,发现异构体数目随团簇尺寸的增大而急剧增加,对于(TiO_(2))_(7)和(TiO_(2))_(8),能量在30 kcal/mol以内的异构体都在50个以上.该工作发现了大量的二氧化钛小型团簇异构体,并凸显了其多样的结构特征,增进了对二氧化钛纳米团簇的结构、成键的理解,并为进一步的理论模拟、力场优化等提供了理论基础.

本文旨在利用密度泛函理论研究甲苯在铂(Pt)表面的催化氧化。首先,用热力学方法研究了甲苯在Pt(111)、(100)、(110)、(211)和(200)表面的化学吸附。结算结果表明,苯环与Pt表面具有较强的相互作用,导致甲苯分子变形;甲苯在Pt(111)和(100)表面有稳定的吸附。在此基础上,本文进一步研究了甲苯在Pt(111)表面的分解过程,即通过过渡态搜索,计算了从甲苯的甲基和苯环中脱氢的活化能。计算结果表明,甲基中的C-H键较苯环上的C-H键弱。甲苯上甲基的脱氢反应(C6H5CH3→C6H5CH2→C6H5CH→C6H5C)是具有较低活化能的放热反应。与之相反,苯环的脱氢反应是吸热反应,且活化能较高。较低的活化能有利于甲苯的甲基在Pt(111)表面脱氢,而苯环上的氢不易脱除。甲苯上各键键长的变化说明了 Pt不同表面催化活性的差异。

Geology of the Structurally Controlled Quartz Vein Gold Mineralization in the Dikko Area, Part of Zungeru—Minna—Birnin Gwari Schist Belt, NW Nigeria

Dikko area, Niger State, North Central Nigeria falls within the Pan-African thermo-tectonic event which occurred in Nigeria as in other parts of West Africa with widespread effect on the mineralization of rejuvenated basement and geosynclinal trough deposits. The Pan-African Belt in Nigeria forms part of the Benin-Nigeria (Dahomeyan) shield which is regarded as the southern prolongation of the circumcratonic Pan-African belt of the West African Craton. Structurally controlled, gold-bearing quartz veins were measured and studied in the area from an extensive geological ground investigation. Field and petrographical studies indicate that the Neoproterozoic rocks constitute gneisses, amphibolite schist, amphibolites and migmatites. The amphibolites are intruded by pegmatites. The associated quartz veins are generally concordant with the main N-S regional structural trend. The lithological and structural studies carried out in these areas have demonstrated the relationship between structures and mineralization and/or lithology. The main characteristics of the gold mineralization in the area appear to indicate hydrothermal mineralization in connection with shear zones. This study allows us to predict that quartz veins in the amphibolite can be mined at a profit and a detailed geochemical and resource valuation needs to be carried out for the Au and associated Galena and Ag mineralization to fully exploit their economic potential.

The Occurence of Gastrointestinal Helminths in Slaughtered Cattle in Azare, North-East Nigeria

A Cross-sectional Study was carried out to determine the prevalence of gastrointestinal(G.I.)helminths parasites in slaughtered cattle at Azare abattoir,Katagum Local Government Area,Bauchi State,North-Eastern *** hundred and twenty faecal samples were examined using the floatation and sedimentation *** of the total samples tested,*** infections were detected in 62 samples tested,giving an overall prevalence of 51.6%.Class nematodes are the most diverse class(56.5%),followed by trematodes(35.5%),while cestodes are the least prevalent(8.1%).There was a statistically significant difference in ***’prevalence among different classes(p0.05).The Red Bororo breeds had the highest prevalence of 75%,while the least was recorded in White Fulani and Sokoto Gudali,40%*** was a statistically significant difference in G.I helminth infection’s prevalence rate to breed(p<0.05).This study revealed that Fasciola spp.(15%)is the most prevalent *** parasites detected,followed by Oesophagostomum spp(11.7%);Haemonchus spp.(9.2%);Strongyloides spp.(8.3%),Schistosoma spp.(3.3%);and Moniezia spp.(1.67%).Our findings from the present study revealed a high prevalence of *** species affecting cattle in Azare,North-East ***,there is a great need for proper advocacy on appropriate management,regular deworming practices,and improved cattle hygiene to boost animal *** will help in curbing significant loss to Nigeria’s economy and the world in general.
