Hemoglobin Subunit Beta Gene Polymorphism rs33949930 T>C and Risk of Sickle Cell Disease—A Case Control Study from Tabuk (Northwestern Part of Saudi Arabia)

Background: Sickle cell disease and sickle cell trait are common erythrocyte disorders that are most often caused by a point mutation (rs334, designated HbS) in the hemoglobin beta gene (HBB);however of this fact, there is extreme variability in occurrence and clinical presentation of sickle cell disease which may be explained by some other genetic changes associated with the gene. In the present study we examined the association between HBB gene polymorphism rs33949930 T>C in the occurrence of sickle cell disease in Saudi Arabia population. Materials and Methods: A case control study of 100 sickle cell disease patients and 100 healthy controls from Tabuk, Saudi Arabia. HBB gene rs33949930 T>C polymorphism was analyzed using Allele specific polymerase chain reaction technique. Results: It was observed that the genotype percentages TT, TC and CC among the patients with sickle cell disease were 63.0%, 35.0% and 2.0% and healthy controls were 68.0%, 27.0% and 5.0% respectively. Allele frequency for T allele was observed to be fT = 0.20 and fT = 0.19, where as for C allele was fC = 0.80 and fC = 0.81 among cases and controls respectively (p = 0.29). Compared to the TT genotype, the odds ratio of 1.4 (95% CI 0.76 - 2.57), risk ratio of 1.2 (95% CI 0.86 - 1.65) and risk difference of 8.4 (-6.66 - 23.38) for heterozygous genotype of HBB rs33949930 T>C was observed in relation to sickle cell disease. In addition, some difference in the laboratory values was observed among sickle cell disease patients with the different variants of HBB gene rs33949930 T>C polymorphism, especially the carriers of heterozygous TC genotype;however, the difference doesn’t reach to statically significant number. Conclusion: Present study suggested that there was not any significant association between HBB gene rs33949930 T>C polymorphism and occurrence of sickle cell disease. Ground-level ozone(O_(3)) is a widespread air pollutant causing extensive injuries in ***,its effects on perennial energy crops remain poorly under-stood due to technical difficulties in cultivating fast-growing shrubs for biomass production under O_(3) treatment on the *** we present the results of a two-year evaluation in the framework of which willow(Salix sachalinensis ***)shrubs were exposed to ambient(AOZ)or elevated(EOZ)O_(3) in two successive growing seasons(2014,2015)and treated with 0(EDU0)or 400 mg L^(−1)(EDU400)eth-ylenediurea spray in the second growing *** 2014,EOZ altered the chemical composition of both top young and fallen leaves,and a novel mechanism of decreasing Mg in fallen leaves while highly enriching it in young top leaves was revealed in shrubs exposed to *** 2015,EDU400 alleviated EOZ-induced decreases in leaf fresh mass to dry mass ratio(fm/DM)and leaf mass per area(LMA).While EDU400 protected against EOZ-induced suppression of the maximum rate at which leaves can fix carbon(A_(max))in O_(3)-asymptomatic leaves,it did not alle-viate EOZ-induced suppression of the maximum rates of carboxylation(VCmax)and electron transport(J_(max))and chlorophylls a,b,and a+b in the same type of *** O_(3)-symptomatic leaves,however,EDU400 alleviated EOZ-induced suppression of chlorophylls a and a+b,indicating different mode of action of EDU between O_(3)-asymptomatic and O_(3)-symptomatic *** herbivory occurred only in AOZ-exposed plants,leading to suppressed biomass production,while EOZ also led to a similar suppression of biomass production(EDU0×EOZ ***400×EOZ).In 2016,carry-over effects were also evaluated following cropping and transplantation into new ambient *** of EOZ in the preceding growing seasons extended to the third growing season in the form of suppressed ratoon biomass production,indicating carry-over effect of *** EDU400 protected against EOZ-induced suppression of biom

A new type numerical model for action balance equation in simulating nearshore waves

Several current used wave numerical models are briefly described, the computing techniques of the source terms, numerical wave generation and boundary conditions in the action balance equation model are discussed. Not only the quadruplet wave-wave interactions, but also the triad wave-wave interactions are included in the model, so that nearshore waves could be simulated reasonably. The model is compared with the Boussinesq equation and the mild slope equation. The model is applied to calculating the distributions of wave height and wave period field in the Haian Bay area and to simulating the influences of the unsteady current and water level variation on the wave field. Finally, the developing tendency of the model is discussed.

Ceramic Carbon/Polypyrrole Materials for the Construction of Bienzymatic Amperometric Biosensor for Glucose

A novel amperometric glucose biosensor was constructed by electrochemical formation of a polypyrrole (PPy) membrane in the presence of glucose oxidase (GOD) on the surface of a horseradish peroxidase (HRP) modified ferrocenecarboxylic acid (FCA) mediated sol-gel derived ceramic carbon electrode. The amperometric detection of glucose was carried out at +0.16 V (vs. SCE) in 0.1 mol/L phosphate buffer solution (pH 6.9) with a linear response range between 8.0x10(-5) and 1.3x10(-3) mol/L of glucose. The biosensor showed a good suppression of interference and a negligible deviation in the amperometric detection.

Study on 3D Quantitative Structure-Activity Relationships of Taxoid

A series of 94 taxol analogues exhibiting antitumor activity were investigated using comparative molecular field analysis (CoMFA) method. The most optimal CoMFA from 80 compounds selected randomly yielded a two-components model, with significant cross-validation r(cv)(2) of 0.640 and conventional r(2) of 0.868. The robustness of the CoMFA model was further validated by prediction of 14 test set compounds. The CoMFA model explained present SAR and particularly the importance of the hydroxyl group at C-2' position and the stereochemistry at C-2' and C-3' positions.

The prophylactic effects of Chinese propolis against cypermethrin toxicity were evaluated by performing ovary and uterus histopathology, as well as by characterizing ovarian function, embryos, and litters. Cypermethrin induced atypia in the ovary and uterus, and decreased the ovulation sites and the number of embryos. Cypermethrin-induced oxidative stress during pregnancy, decreased the parturition rate as well as the number and weight of offspring and increased the incidence of morphological malformations in the offspring. Administration of propolis to cypermethrin-treated animals mitigated cypermethrin-induced reproductive toxicity.
