Best practices in managing, supervising, and assessing architectural graduation proj.cts： A quantitative study

Graduation proj.ct courses refer to the culmination of the learning experiences of higher education. These courses consolidate the disciplinary knowledge gained during architectural education while they integrate most of the learning outcomes of a program, which are intended to prepare students for their transition to the profession of architecture. The educational methods of these courses require constant attention, regular review, and continuous development to remain consistent with the changing standards of the profession given the significance of these courses. The problem lies in the diversity and controversy of these methods, thereby implying inconsistency in the best practices. In this study, several questions are raised in terms of the nature of these courses, enrollment criteria, topic selection, learning experience, and assessment methods. This study aims to investigate the best practices of managing, supervising, and assessing architectural graduation proj.cts to provide guidelines for establishing and/or developing these courses. An analytical deductive methodology is adopted. This methodology is supported by a survey of a sample of 105 worldwide academic architects and is structured into four sections, namely, the analysis of the components of graduation proj.cts, the survey and its procedures, the quantitative findings of the survey, and a discussion of the issues and results. This study draws conclusions to its research questions, thereby extending its influence on the quality of architectural programs and the benefits for individuals who are concerned with their development.

Investigating elective courses in architectural education

One of the approaches used by educational institutions to ensure that their programs reflect advances and changes in the architectural profession is the inclusion of elective courses. This study aims to establish a basis for integrating elective courses into architectural curricula by investigating the component of elective courses in 30 highly-ranked undergraduate architectural programs around the world. The need for this study arose as a result of the limited literature and lack of scientific foundation with which to support the process of merging elective courses into architectural curricula. This study has raised many questions in terms of direction, amount, subj.ct, and timing of elective courses in architectural education. This study adopts an analytical deductive methodology supported by quantitative research. It is structured into four sections： topic overview, survey and its procedures, findings of the survey, and discussion. The discussion includes a proposal for integrating elective courses into architectural education. This study draws conclusions to its research questions, which broadens its impact on the quality of architectural programs and benefits for those concerned with architectural accreditation.

Liver transplantation in patients with incidental hepatocellular carcinoma/cholangiocarcinoma and intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma： a single-center experience

BACKGROUND： Reports of fiver transplantation （LT） in patients with mixed hepatocellular carcinoma/cholangiocarcinoma （HCC/CC） and intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma （ICC） are modest and have been mostly retrospective after pathological categorization in the setting of presumed HCC. Some studies suggest that patients undergoing LT with small and unifocal ICC or mixed HCC/CC can achieve about 40%-60% 5-year post-transplant survival. The study aimed to report our experience in patients undergoing LT with explant pathology revealing HCC/CC and ICC. METHODS： From a prospectively maintained database, we performed cohort analysis. We identified 13 patients who underwent LT with explant pathology revealing HCC/CC or ICC. RESULTS： The observed recurrence rate post-LT was 31% （4/13） and overall survival was 85%, 51%, and 51% at 1, 3 and 5 years, respectively. Disease-free survival was 68%, 51%, and 41% at 1, 3 and 5 years, respectively. In our cohort, four patients would have qualified for exception points based on updated HCC Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network imaging guidelines. CONCLUSIONS： Lesions which lack complete imaging characteristics of HCC may warrant pre-LT biopsy to fully elucidate their pathology. Identified patients with early HCC/CC or ICC may benefit from LT if unresectable. Additionally, incorporating adj.nctive perioperative therapies such as in the case of patients undergoing LT with hilar cholangiocarcinoma may improve outcomes but this warrants further investigation.

Towards a sustainable campus-city relationship:A systematic review of the literature

The relationship between a university and its city is considered strategical to achieve university targeted ambitions and *** university-city relationship is also encouraged for the benefit of the city,as universities unleash their respective cities’potentials to act as driving forces not only for their local communities,but also for the whole ***,maintaining a mutual relationship between the university and the city is considered essential to accomplish strategic goals for ***,the nature of this relationship is quite complex,overlapped,interconnected,and ***,this paper conducted a systematic review of the literature on university-city and campus-city relationships to evaluate recent research trends to uncover the aspects that connect universities with their respective *** search included articles published in 4 different databases from j.nuary 1990 to j.nuary 2021.A total number of 50 articles were selected in this *** findings uncovered different aspects that could help or hinder university-city relationship based on the physical and functional linkage between the campus and the ***,findings have shown that it is necessary to understand universities according to their contextual differences,as universities have shown different impacts on their respective cities in terms of their sizes and *** have also shown that the impact of the physical connection between the university and the city goes far beyond campus’s accessibility as it deeply affects students’social life as ***,decision makers,stakeholders,and university administrators need to co-design campus development process especially in the early stages to maximize the mutual benefits of campus-city *** main conclusions of this paper address several perspectives and lessons for a more sustainable campus-city relationship.

Enhanced termination of zinc and cadmium ions from wastewater employing plain and chitosan-modified mxenes:synthesis,characterization,and adsorption performance

Zinc and cadmium pollutants cause a significant environmental effect that cannot be *** to their considerable amount in an aqueous environment,industries are seeking suitable adsorbents that are environmentally friendly and inexpensive for removing metals from wastewater before disposing of them in surface *** research employed original MXene(MX)and chitosan-modified MXene(CSMX)to extract zinc(Zn(Ⅱ))and cadmium(Cd(Ⅱ))metal ions from water-based *** composite material produced was analyzed using techniques such as X-ray Diffraction(XRD),Scanning Electron Microscopy(SEM),Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy(FTIR),and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller(BET).The effects of contact duration,p H of the solution,and initial concentration of metal ions on the adsorption process of Zn(Ⅱ)and Cd(Ⅱ)onto both MX and CSMX composites were *** and prepared CSMX composite presented a high adsorption capacity for both studied heavy metals,which were 91.55 and 73.82 mg/g for Zn(Ⅱ)and Cd(Ⅱ)onto MX,106.84 and 93.07 mg/g for Cd(Ⅱ)and Zn(Ⅱ)onto CSMX composite,***,the maximum competitive adsorption capacities for Zn(Ⅱ)onto MX and CSMX composites are 77.29 and 93.47 mg/g,and for are Cd(Ⅱ)60.30 and 79.66 mg/g,***,the removal capacities for both single and competitive metal ions were superior to CSMX ***,the adsorption capacities after five successive regeneration sequences were only dropped by 13.2%for Zn(Ⅱ)and 17.4%for Cd(Ⅱ)onto the CSMX composite compared to the first *** results confirm that both metals could be efficiently terminated from wastewater,which makes the prepared CSMX composite a favorable candidate adsorbent in practical applications.

Evaluation of fatigue life of asphalt binders using the time sweep and linear amplitude sweep tests: A literature review

Asphalt binders play a crucial role in the fatigue cracking resistance of asphalt pavement,making the characterization of their fatigue life increasingly important. To evaluate the fatigue life of asphalt binders, two tests have been developed: the time sweep(TS) and the linear amplitude sweep(LAS), both conducted using the dynamic shear rheometer(DSR).Similar to asphalt mixtures, predicting the fatigue life of asphalt binders necessitates the predefinition of fatigue failure criterion and/or fatigue failure definition(failure point).Phenomenological and dissipated energy-based failure criteria are commonly employed to analyze TS test results, while the viscoelastic continuum damage(VECD) model is primarily used to predict fatigue life through the LAS test. Given that the fatigue test temperature significantly impacts the fatigue life of asphalt binders, various methods have been proposed in the literature for selecting the fatigue test *** paper provides a comprehensive review of the fatigue life evaluation of asphalt binders using both TS and LAS tests. It summarizes the different fatigue failure criteria and fatigue failure definitions employed and discusses the selection of fatigue test temperatures. Furthermore, the paper examines the influence of fatigue test conditions, binder chemical composition and/or penetration grade, and bitumen modification on the fatigue life of asphalt binders. Based on the current review, it is recommended to utilize the LAS test on PAV-aged bitumen under strain-controlled conditions to evaluate the fatigue life of asphalt binders. The most relevant failure definition is the peak in stored pseudo-strain energy based on the simplified viscoelastic continuum damage model(S-VECD). Additionally, the authors propose conducting the fatigue test at an intermediate reference temperature for each country or region, depending on its climate zone.

CFD investigation of the agitation in the desupersaturation during the wet-process phosphoric acid(WPPA)process

Desupersaturation is a complex cooling operation that involves hydrodynamic,thermal and mechanical *** process requires continuous agitation to avoid fouling problems and sludge *** current work aims to investigate the well mixedness in the desupersaturation tank for optimal *** this purpose,a multi-fluid CFD study was conducted based on the Euler–Euler modeling approach,considering a multiphase flow involving a liquid phase(phosphoric acid)and a poly-dispersed solid phase,i.e.a sludge with three different sizes where each size is considered as a separate ***,the hydrodynamic behavior of the flow within the agitated desupersaturator is analyzed through the investigation of the velocity fields as well as the power and pumping numbers,to determine both the agitator capacity to pump the flow and its power consumption during the ***,in order to assess the mixture homogeneity,we evaluated the solid suspension in the desupersaturation reactor following conventional methods and two new proposed methodologies:the first approach is to evaluate the suspension quality in the mixing system by compartment and the second consists on the assessment of the uniform convergence of the solid ***,we calculated the time required to achieve a full suspension at different solid *** other hand,we conducted a detailed analysis of the solid distribution dependency on the impeller rotational speed at different solid volume fraction,which allows a good understanding of the parameters controlling the homogenization in the desupersaturator.

Dear editor,Family physicians often serve as the primary resource for parents seeking medical treatment for their children,and it is not uncommon for children with medical emergencies to be brought into primary care offices instead of local emergency departments(EDs).Although estimated incidence rates of pediatric emergencies in primary care offices vary based on the definition used,the number of patients seen,and clinic location,[1-3]any healthcare provider who sees pediatric patients should be ready for immediate medical intervention to minimize adverse outcomes.[4,5]Various studies in the USA have shown that outpatient offices are not adequately prepared for pediatric emergencies,whether that is defined as stocking recommended equipment,having policies for the transport of patients to EDs,engaging in mock codes,or being certified in Advanced Pediatric Life Support(APLS)or Basic Life Support(BLS).[1-3]This deficit in preparedness exists despite the presence of multiple nation-and state-wide guidelines on the subj.ct,including a policy by the American Academy of Pediatrics.[3]Limited information exists on the preparedness of primary care physicians for pediatric emergencies in other nations.

An efficient energy-management strategy for a DC microgrid powered by a photovoltaic/fuel cell/battery/supercapacitor

The outcome of this paper is to suggest an efficient energy-management strategy(EMS)for a direct-current(DC)microgrid(MG).The typical MG is composed of two renewable energy sources[photovoltaic(PV)systems and fuel cells(FCs)]and two energy-storage elements(lithium-ion battery and supercapacitor).An EMS was proposed to ensure optimal bus voltage with a power-sharing arrangement between the load and the *** a result,in the suggested DC MG,non-linear flatness control theory was used instead of the traditional proportional-integral control *** suggested EMS is intended to supply high power quality to the load under varying load conditions with fluctuating solar irradiation while considering the FC *** validate and prove the effectiveness of the proposed EMS,a MATLAB®environment was *** addition,the output power of the PV system was maximized using the particle swarm optimization algorithm as a maximum power point tracking(MPPT)technique to track the MPP of the 3000-W PV system under different irradiance *** results show that the suggested EMS delivers a stable and smooth DC bus voltage with minimum overshoot value(0.1%)and improved ripple content(0.1%).As a result,the performance of the DC MG was enhanced by employing the flatness control theory,which provides higher power quality by stabilizing the bus voltage.
