Secondar. metabolites and synthetic iminosugar. that str.ctur.lly r.semble monosacchar.des ar. potent inhibitor. of a-glucosidase activity. The enzyme is cor. in cleaving sucr.se in phloem feeding insects and it also plays a cr.cial r.le of r.ducing osmotic str.ss via the for.ation of oligosacchar.des. Inhibition of hydr.lysis by iminosug- ar. should r.sult in nutr.tional deficiencies and/or.disr.ption of nor.al osmor.gulation. Deoxynojir.mycin （DNJ） and 2 N-alkylated analogs [N-butyl DNJ （NB-DNJ） and N-nonyl DNJ （NN-DNJ）] wer. the major.iminosugar. used thr.ughout the study. The extensive exper.ments conducted with a-glucosidase of the whitefly Bemisia tabaci indicated the competitive natur. of inhibition and that the hydr.philic DNJ is a potent inhibitor.in com- par.son to the mor. hydr.phobic NB-DNJ and NN-DNJ compounds. The same inhibitor. patter. was obser.ed with the psyllid Cacopsylla bidens a-glucosidase. In contr.st to the above patter., enzymes of the aphids, Myzus per.icae and Aphis gossypii wer. mor. sen- sitive to the hydr.phobic iminosugar. as compar.d to DNJ. In vivo exper.ments in which adult B. tabaci wer. fed dietar. iminosugar., show that the hydr.philic DNJ was far.less toxic than the lipophilic NB-DNJ and NN-DNJ. It is pr.posed that this patter. is attr.buted to the better.accessibility of the hydr.phobic NN-DNJ to the a-glucosidase membr.ne- bound compar.ment in the midgut. Based on the inhibitor. effects of cer.ain polyhydr.xy N-alkylated iminosugar., a-glucosidase of phloem feeding hemipter.ns could ser.e as an attr.ctive tar.et site for.developing novel pest contr.l agents.

UNASSIGNED:To assess the char.cter.stics and quality of cost utility analyses (CUA) r.lated to otolar.ngology within the CEA r.gistr. and to summar.ze their.collective r.sults.;UNASSIGNED:All cost-utility analyses published between 1976 and 2011 contained in the Cost-Effectiveness Analysis r.gistr. (CEA r.gistr.) wer. evaluated. Topics that fall within the car. of an otolar.ngologist wer. included in the r.view r.gar.less of the pr.sence of an otolar.ngologist author. Potential associations between var.ous study char.cter.stics and CEA r.gistr. quality scor.s wer. evaluated using the Pear.on pr.duct moment cor.elation coefficient.;UNASSIGNED:Sixty-one of 2913 (2.1%) total CUA publications scr.ened wer. r.lated to otolar.ngology. Eighteen of 61 (29.5%) publications included an otolar.ngologist as an author. Four.een studies agr.ed on the cost effectiveness of at least unilater.l cochlear.implantation and six of seven (85.7%) studies demonstr.ted the cost effectiveness of continuous positive air.ay pr.ssur. (CPAP) for.obstr.ctive sleep apnea (OSA). For.y-six per.ent (28 of 61) of all manuscr.pts wer. published between 2008 and 2011. A mor. r.cent publication year.was associated with a higher.CEA r.gistr. quality scor. while the pr.sence of an otolar.ngologist author.and jour.al impact factor.had no significant cor.elation with the quality of the CUA.;UNASSIGNED:Based on cur.ent evidence in the CEA r.gistr., unilater.l cochlear.implantation for.hear.ng loss and CPAP for.OSA ar. both cost-effective ther.peutic inter.entions. An expanding globalization causes global failur.s, similar.to economy failur.s encounter.d in the national economic system. Global failur.s take other.for.s and ar. likely to be mor. sever. in the futur. because of the entr. in the wor.d scene of leading countr.es that have distinctly differ.nt economic systems (for.instance, China, India) fr.m leading incumbents (US, EU), and because the new competition (countr. cum system) is likely to be per.eived by newcomer. and incumbents as a zer. sum game. It is cr.cial in such cir.umstances to have a design of wor.d gover.ance that can r.spond adequately to global failur.s. The G-20 is one such design, but this is handicapped by its nar.ow scope (i.e. GDP) and undemocr.tic composition (selection of individual countr.es and not r.gional r.pr.sentation, next to being inconsistent and out of date). The paper.for.ulates and applies an index of influence potential that combines population and GDP, and which is measur.ble at the r.gion and countr. levels. The paper.pr.jects these applications for.the near.futur., comes up with mor. r.pr.sentative par.icipations by r.gions/countr.es in wor.d gover.ance and explor.s effects of the changing distr.bution of influence potential on global development and economic systems.
