Geographic distribution of arsenic contamination in the Himalayan Rivers flowing through Pakistan: Implications for its natural source and effects of anthropogenic activities

Arsenic(As) in natural hydrological systems is known as a worldwide major environmental concern. A geochemical and sedimentological study was done to ascertain the origin and geographical distribution of As in surface water and fluvial sediment collected from the floodplains/basins of the River Indus and its four major tributaries that drain through the northern Pakistan. The hydrogeochemical compositions of all five rivers were similar with calcium(Ca2+) and bicarbonate(HCO3-) being the dominating ions. The concentration of As ranged from 0.62-24.05 μg/L(average 3.7 ± 3.5 μg/L, n = 61) in river water, 2.3-23.4 mg/kg(average 5.7 ± 3.9 mg/kg) in suspended sediment, and 2.0-13 mg/kg(average4.13 ± 2.3 mg/kg) in fluvial sediment. Various approaches were used, including mineralogical, sequential extraction, geochemical, and statistical analyses to investigate the distribution, behavior, and potential sources of As in the sediment. The effect of geological factors on the distribution of As was also studied.No noticeable changes in the relative abundance of minerals were observed in the sediment at different locations along the river. Both mineralogical and statistical analyses showed that silicate minerals like muscovite, biotite, and chloride are the main As reservoir while oxides minerals like hematite and magnetite, which are minor components in the sediment are second largest As carrier. A geochemical baseline, using the normalization and cumulative frequency distribution curves was constructed for As.The estimated mean human contribution of As was 3.4% in the Indus River, 1.9% in the Jhelum River, 13.7%in the Chenab River, 17.5% in the Ravi River and 5.4% in the Sutlej River, indicating relatively higher effects of anthropogenic activity along the Chenab River and Ravi River. The almost negligible effects of anthropogenic activities were additionally confirmed through the pollution assessment parameters estimated from the geo-enrichment, contamination factors, and accumulation index analyses. The Paleocene coals of the Salt Range in the Punjab Province of Pakistan have great economic potential;however,their trace element and stable isotopic characteristics have not been studied in detail except for a few sporadic samples.In this study,a total of 59 coal samples of which 14 are obtained from open cast mines have been investigated for elemental composition andδ^(13)C-δ^(15)N isotopic signatures.Average contents of trace elements such as Co,Cr,Cu,Pb,Sr,Th,U,V,and Zn are 7.4,41.7,11.2,12.5,90.2,4.0,1.9,128,and 31.1 mg/kg,respectively.These values,when compared with the World Coal Clarke values,were relatively higher in low-rank coals in comparison with Clarke values for brown coals.Likewise,As(20.4 mg/kg),Co(6.6 mg/kg),Cr(22.4 mg/kg),Cu(^(13).3 mg/kg),Pb(19.2 mg/kg),Sr(^(15)4.7 mg/kg),Th(2.5 mg/kg),V(47.8 mg/kg),and Zn(75.1 mg/kg)were significantly higher in the sub-bituminous to bituminous coals of the Salt Range.Mineralogical analysis,based on X-ray diffraction and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy,revealed that the studied samples contain illite,kaolinite calcite,gypsum,pyrite,and quartz.Elemental affinity with organic and inorganic phases of coals calculated by an indirect statistical approach indicated a positive association of ash content with Ag,Al,Co,Cr,Cs,Cu,Mn,P,Rb,Pb,Th,U,and V,suggesting the presence of inorganic components in studied coals.However,As,Fe,Sr,and Zn exhibit negative correlations that imply their association with the organic fraction.Theδ^(13)C andδ^(15)N isotopic range and average−24.94‰to−25.86‰(−25.41‰)and−2.77‰to 3.22‰(0.96‰),respectively,reflecting 3C type modern terrestrial vegetation were common in the palaeomires of studied coal seams.In addition,the trivial variations of 0.92‰and 0.45‰among^(13)C and^(15)N values can be attributed to water level fluctuations and plant assemblies.

Over the past few decades,complementary and alternative treatments have become increasingly popular worldwide.The purported therapeutic characteristics of natural products have come under increased scrutiny both in vitro and in vivo as part of efforts to legitimize their usage.One such product is tea tree oil(TTO),a volatile essential oil primarily obtained from the native Australian plant,Melaleuca alternifolia,which has diverse traditional and industrial applications such as topical preparations for the treatment of skin infections.Its anti-inflammatory-linked immunomodulatory actions have also been reported.This systematic review focuses on the anti-inflammatory effects of TTO and its main components that have shown strong immunomodulatory potential.An extensive literature search was performed electronically for data curation on worldwide accepted scientific databases,such as Web of Science,Google Scholar,PubMed,ScienceDirect,Scopus,and esteemed publishers such as Elsevier,Springer,Frontiers,and Taylor&Francis.Considering that the majority of pharmacological studies were conducted on crude oils only,the extracted data were critically analyzed to gain further insight into the prospects of TTO being used as a neuroprotective agent by drug formulation or dietary supplement.In addition,the active constituents contributing to the activity of TTO have not been well justified,and the core mechanisms need to be unveiled especially for anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects leading to neuroprotection.Therefore,this review attempts to correlate the anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory activity of TTO with its neuroprotective mechanisms.

Increasing secondary bacterial infections with Enterobacteriaceae harboring bla_(CTX-M-15) and bla_(CMY-6) in patients with bronchogenic carcinoma:an emerging point of concern

Objective:To look for secondary bacterial infections in bronchogenic carcinoma（BCA） with resistant organisms harboring bla genes considering the paucity of relevant studies.Methods: A total of 137 confirmed cases of BCA and 34 healthy volunteers were studied for the occurrence and prevalence of blaCTX-M and and blaAmpC harboring-enterobacteriaceae.A subset of these patients（n=69） was previously reported for the secondary infection with the Aspergillus species. Bronchoalveolar lavages（BAL） were subjected for bacterial and fungal cultures and the bacterial isolates were screened by multiplex PCRs for the presence of blaCTX-M and blaAmpC.The isolates were also screened for the association of insertion sequence（IS26） by PCR and characterized by RAPD for any clonal relatedness.Results:A total of 143 bacterial isolates were obtained from 137 BAL specimens of BC,patients.The Enterobacteriaceae-isolates were multidrug-resistant showing concomitant resistance to fluoroquinolones and aminoglycosides.Both blaCTX-M and blaAmpC of CIT family were detected in 77.4%and 27.4%isolates,respectively.Sequencing revealed the presence of blaCTX-M-15 and blaCMY-6.Twenty one percent of the isolates were simultaneously harboring blaampC and blaCTX-M-15.IS26 PCR and RAPD typing revealed the presence of diverse bacterial population but no predominant clone was identified.The present study also suggests strong association of aspergillosis with lung cancer and further strengthens the potential use of non-validated serological tests suggested earlier.Conclusions:We emphasize that all patients of bronchogenic carcinoma should also be screened for secondary bacterial infections,along with secondary fungal infections,so as to introduce early and specific antimicrobial therapy and to prevent unwanted deaths.

Genome-wide identification and expression profiling of photosystem II(PsbX)gene family in upland cotton(Gossypium hirsutum L.)

Background Photosystem II(PSII)constitutes an intricate assembly of protein pigments,featuring extrinsic and intrinsic polypeptides within the photosynthetic membrane.The low-molecular-weight transmembrane protein PsbX has been identified in PSII,which is associated with the oxygen-evolving complex.The expression of PsbX gene protein is regulated by light.PsbX’s central role involves the regulation of PSII,facilitating the binding of quinone molecules to the Qb(PsbA)site,and it additionally plays a crucial role in optimizing the efficiency of photosynthesis.Despite these insights,a comprehensive understanding of the PsbX gene’s functions has remained elusive.Results In this study,we identified ten PsbX genes in Gossypium hirsutum L.The phylogenetic analysis results showed that 40 genes from nine species were classified into one clade.The resulting sequence logos exhibited substantial conservation across the N and C terminals at multiple sites among all Gossypium species.Furthermore,the ortholo-gous/paralogous,Ka/Ks ratio revealed that cotton PsbX genes subjected to positive as well as purifying selection pressure might lead to limited divergence,which resulted in the whole genome and segmental duplication.The expression patterns of GhPsbX genes exhibited variations across specific tissues,as indicated by the analysis.Moreover,the expression of GhPsbX genes could potentially be regulated in response to salt,intense light,and drought stresses.Therefore,GhPsbX genes may play a significant role in the modulation of photosynthesis under adverse abiotic conditions.Conclusion We examined the structure and function of PsbX gene family very first by using comparative genom-ics and systems biology approaches in cotton.It seems that PsbX gene family plays a vital role during the growth and development of cotton under stress conditions.Collectively,the results of this study provide basic information to unveil the molecular and physiological function of PsbX genes of cotton plants.

Based on experimental test results,flax fiber reinforced polymer composites are characterized by nonlinear visco-elastoplastic behavior.The aim of this work is to model the quasi-unidirectional flax fiber reinforced composite behavior through a three dimensional formulation with orthotropic elasticity and orthotropic plasticity using Hill criterion.The isotropic hardening and Johnson Cook parameters are identified from unidirectional tensile tests at different strain rates.The adjustment of Hill’s yield criterion is developed based on yield stresses obtained in tensile tests at different directions.The numerical integration of the constitutive equations is implemented in a user-defined material,UMAT subroutines for the commercial finite element code ABAQUS.Once model parameters are identified using tensile tests,the model needs to be validated by confronting it with other experimental results.That is why experimental and numerical three-point bending tests are carried out in order to validate the proposed model with tests that have not served for the identification.Finally,a numerical parametric study on low velocity impact of a flax/epoxy composite circular plate is investigated.

A case of a patient infected with a hepatitis C virus genotype 3a multidrug resistant variant in Pakistan

Background:Approximately 10 million people in Pakistan are infected with the hepatitis C virus(HCV).Most patients develop chronic hepatitis,with rare cases of spontaneous clearance.However,little is known about multidrug resistant viral variants in Pakistan.Findings:This case study describes a 47-year-old male diagnosed with chronic HCV genotype 3a infection in 2003.After an initial diagnosis of viral infection,the patient remained treatment naïve for 5 years.He received two therapy cycles of interferon(IFN)plus ribavirin(RBV)in 2007 and 2010,however,he was non-responsive to the therapy.The patient then received an additional two treatment cycles of pegylated IFNα-2b plus RBV(in 2011 and 2013);he was still non-responsive.In 2016,the patient underwent sofosbuvir plus RBV combination therapy,however,the sustained virological response was still not achieved.The host genetic factor was found to be heterozygous guanine and thymine(GT)and cytosine and thymine(CT)genotypes of rs8099917 and rs12979860 polymorphism of IL28B,respectively.Phylogenetic analysis suggests that the resistant variant belong to an out-group and may require triple therapy.Conclusions:This is the first case that reports on a HCV-infected individual who was a non-responder to multiple IFN therapies in Pakistan.Further studies are needed to understand multidrug-resistant HCV variants in the Pakistani population.

Geochemical Behaviour of the Tunisian Background Aerosols in Sirocco Wind Circulations

This study examines spatial and time evolutions of the principal constituents of the Tunisian background aerosols under Sirocco wind circulations. Aerosols coming from the Sahara Desert were found to be loaded with particulate matter, especially silicon. The aerosols were shown to have varying geochemical behaviour along the ＂South-North＂ displacement of the Saharan plumes, depending on the wind flow characteristics, geomorphologic features and the nature of soils swept by the wind. In the south and the center part of the country, the transfer of aerosol constituents to the soil （by gravity and/or impaction） was probably predom- inated by localized enrichment phenomena. The latter are reinforced by the effect of turbulent winds over bare soils, wind wakes and probably selective disintegration, especially in the vicinity of the geomorphologic features of central Tunisia. These relatively high features, extending over important distances, appear to be of paramount importance for the phenomena of redistribution of aerosol constituents even during periods without Sirocco wind circulations. In the northern section of the country, aerosol constituent concentrations dropped to almost 50%, in spite of the abundance of localized turbulent winds. This may be explained by the effect of forests and the relatively dense vegetation cover, which clearly reinforces the transfer phenomena to the soil and the attenuate of dust entrainment.

The content-centric networking(CCN)architecture allows access to the content through name,instead of the physical location where the content is stored,which makes it a more robust and flexible content-based architecture.Nevertheless,in CCN,the broadcast nature of vehicles on the Internet of Vehicles(IoV)results in latency and network congestion.The IoVbased content distribution is an emerging concept in which all the vehicles are connected via the internet.Due to the high mobility of vehicles,however,IoV applications have different network requirements that differ from those of many other networks,posing new challenges.Considering this,a novel strategy mediator framework is presented in this paper for managing the network resources efficiently.Software-defined network(SDN)controller is deployed for improving the routing flexibility and facilitating in the interinteroperability of heterogeneous devices within the network.Due to the limited memory of edge devices,the delectable bloom filters are used for caching and storage.Finally,the proposed scheme is compared with the existing variants for validating its effectiveness.
