Assessment of ecosystem services value in response to prevailing and future land use/cover changes in Lahore,Pakistan

Land use/cover changes(LUCCs)significantly affect ecosystem services(ESs)and their corresponding monetary *** can be evaluated to analyze the ecological and environmental changes caused by *** research aims to estimate variations in the ecosystem services value(ESV)due to LUCCs in Lahore of Pakistan,and to offer information and recommendations to policy-makers concerned with the economic improvement of metropolis *** first investigated the historical LUCCs from 1990 to 2019,and then simulated the future land use/cover in 2030 and 2050 based on the CA-Markov model under three scenarios,including business-as-usual(BAU),rapid economic growth(REG),and coordinated environmental sustainability(CES).Subsequently,we evaluated the ESV from 1990 to 2050 and evaluated the historical and potential future ESV changes induced by LUCCs during 1990–2019 and 2019–2050,*** results showed that,land use/cover exhibited an increase in built-up land and decreases in vegetation,water body,and unused land both in the past and *** net ESV decreased from 58.26 million USD in 1990 to 50.31 million USD in *** 2050,the decrease in ESV is most rapid under the REG scenario(decrease ESV of 7.13 million USD and decrease percentage of 14.18%),followed by the BAU(decrease ESV of 5.61 million USD and decrease percentage of 11.15%)and CES(decrease ESV of 5.18 million USD and decrease percentage of 10.30%)*** each ecosystem service type,the ESV of waste treatment decreased by 18.37%from 1990 to 2019,followed by soil formation and conservation(17.52%),biodiversity and maintenance(13.23%),climate regulation(11.80%),food production(11.69%),hydrological regulation(11.11%),and aesthetic value(3.07%).These outcomes indicate that continuous land use/cover planning should focus on regenerating aquatic areas and vegetation restoration.

Effect of Fluidic Diode on Performance of Unidirectional Impulse Turbine

A pair of unidirectional turbines(UT)can operate in oscillatory airflow without additional ***,this arrangement suffers from poor flow rectification.A fluidic diode(FD)offers variable hydrodynamic resistance based on the flow direction,and this can be coupled with UT to improve flow *** this work,a numerical investigation on the effect of FD with UT is presented using the commercial fluid dynamics software ANSYS Fluent 16.1 with k-ωSST turbulence closure *** domains of UT and FD are numerically validated individually with experimental ***,both are coupled to obtain the combined effect,and these results are compared with the analytical *** was observed that coupling FD with UT improved the unit's performance at the lower flow coefficient(<1),but its performance decreased as the flow coefficient *** to the diode's presence,fluid leaving the turbine experiences higher resistance at a higher flow coefficient,which decreases the overall performance of the combined unit.

Obstacle removal in crowd evacuation is critical to safety and the evacuation system efficiency. Recently, manyresearchers proposed game theoreticmodels to avoid and remove obstacles for crowd evacuation. Game theoreticalmodels aim to study and analyze the strategic behaviors of individuals within a crowd and their interactionsduring the evacuation. Game theoretical models have some limitations in the context of crowd evacuation. Thesemodels consider a group of individuals as homogeneous objects with the same goals, involve complex mathematicalformulation, and cannot model real-world scenarios such as panic, environmental information, crowds that movedynamically, etc. The proposed work presents a game theoretic model integrating an agent-based model to removethe obstacles from exits. The proposed model considered the parameters named: (1) obstacle size, length, andwidth, (2) removal time, (3) evacuation time, (4) crowd density, (5) obstacle identification, and (6) route *** proposed work conducts various experiments considering different conditions, such as obstacle types, obstacleremoval, and several obstacles. Evaluation results show the proposed model’s effectiveness compared with existingliterature in reducing the overall evacuation time, cell selection, and obstacle removal. The study is potentially usefulfor public safety situations such as emergency evacuations during disasters and calamities.

ZnO Incorporated Acrylamide Grafted Chitosan Based Composite Film for Advanced Wound Healing Applications

This study was carried out to prepare ZnO nanoparticles incorporated acrylamide grafted chitosan composite film for possible biomedical application especially drug loading in wound healing. ZnO nanoparticles were prepared by co-precipitation method from zinc acetate di-hydrate and incorporated in acrylamide grafted chitosan. FT-IR and TGA of the prepared composite film confirmed the successful incorporation of ZnO nanoparticles in the acrylamide-grafted polymer matrix. SEM images showed that the ZnO nanoparticles were homogeneously distributed on the porous matrix of the composite film. Water uptake and buffer uptake analysis revealed that the composite film could hold water and buffer sufficiently, which facilitated the absorption of exudate from the wound site. Amoxicillin was loaded in the prepared composite film and the maximum loading efficiency was found to be 67.33% with drug concentration of 300 ppm. In vitro studies showed greater antimicrobial activity of drug-loaded composite film compared to both pure film and standard antibiotic disc. Finally, the In vivo mouse model showed maximum healing efficiency compared to conventional gauge bandages because the loading of antibiotic in the film produced a synergistic effect and healing time was reduced.

In present-day society,train tunnels are extensively used as a means of ***,to ensure safety,streamlined train operations,and uninterrupted internet access inside train tunnels,reliable wave propagation modeling is *** have experimented and measured wave propagation models in a 1674 m long straight train tunnel in South *** measured path loss and the received signal strength were modeled with the Close-In(CI),Floating intercept(FI),CI model with a frequency-weighted path loss exponent(CIF),and alpha-beta-gamma(ABG)models,where the model parameters were determined using minimum mean square error(MMSE)*** measured and the CI,FI,CIF,and ABG modelderived path loss was plotted in graphs,and the model closest to the measured path loss was identified through *** on the measured results,it was observed that every model had a comparatively lower(n<2)path loss exponent(PLE)inside the *** also determined the path loss component’s possible deviation(shadow factor)through a Gaussian distribution considering zero mean and standard deviation calculations of random error *** FI model outperformed all the examined models as it yielded a path loss closer to the measured datasets,as well as a minimum standard deviation of the shadow factor.

A biopolymer-based pH indicator film for visually monitoring beef and fish spoilage

Food safety is a worldwide public concern that has recently gained increased attention due to the emerging outbreaks of foodborne ***,there is a pressing need to make simple,cost-effective,and environmentally friendly methods for detecting food spoilage and to mitigate the impact of possible *** aim of this study is to develop a biodegradable indicator film which was made by combining cellulose-nanofiber/chitosan dyed with methyl red synthesis(CCM)as a pH indicator film and followed by a single layer coating of polylactic acid(PLA)on its surface,named PLA/CCM *** microstructural properties of PLA/CCM films were studied using scanning electron microscopy(SEM)and results showed that PLA effectively adhered to the surface of CCM *** microbial response to PLA/CCM film was determined via a bacterial plating *** was found that the contact of film with the microbes caused a substantial color change in the *** coating of PLA upon the CCM film decreased the percentage of the water vapor transmission rate(WVTR).The color of the film vividly altered from slightly red to yellow in response to a pH change in the range of *** PLA/CCM film was applied to monitor the spoilage of beef and fish at room temperature(23℃)and revealed the onset of food spoilage by displaying the color change from red to yellow after 1 *** total viable counts(TVC)of microorganisms and pH of the tested beef sample were determined,and the results revealed that both TVC and pH increased concurrently after beef spoilage.

As a metal immobilizer,biochar can be used to remediate contaminated ***’s effect on the phytoremediation process in flooded conditions under a scenario of increasing flooding frequency as global climate change is not well *** study investigated bamboo biochar(BBC)effects on growth and metal accumulation of Salix in multi-metal contaminated soil under non-flooded versus flooded *** cuttings were cultivated in pots with severely contaminated soil by Cd and Zn,for 120 days,with four treatments including non-flooded treatment,flooded treatment,non-flooded with 3%BBC application(BBC/soil,w/w),and flooded with 3%BBC ***,flooding,and BBC×flooding significantly decreased the bioavailability of metals in soils(P<0.05).The BBC addition markedly stimulated Cd concentration in leaves under non-flooded(94.20%)and flooded conditions(32.73%)but showed little effect on *** BBC significantly boosted Cd and Zn transport from roots to aboveground parts by 68.85%and 102.27%compared with no BBC amendment under non-flooded treatment,while showing insignificant changes under flooded *** the plant biomass was little affected,BBC significantly increased Cd and Zn accumulation in the whole plant by 52.53%and 28.52%under non-flooded while showing an insignificant impact under flooded *** together,BBC enhanced the phytoremediation efficiency of Salix to Cd and Zn in severely polluted non-flooded soil,while flooding offset this *** results indicated the effects of BBC varied under different soil moisture,which should be considered in the biochar-assisted phytoremediation to variable and complex environments.

Stock market forecasting has drawn interest from both economists and computer scientists as a classic yet difficult *** the objective of constructing an effective prediction model,both linear and machine learning tools have been investigated for the past couple of *** recent years,recurrent neural networks(RNNs)have been observed to perform well on tasks involving sequence-based data in many research *** this motivation,we investigated the performance of long-short term memory(LSTM)and gated recurrent units(GRU)and their combination with the attention mechanism;LSTM+Attention,GRU+Attention,and LSTM+GRU+*** methods were evaluated with stock data from three different stock indices:the KSE 100 index,the DSE 30 index,and the BSE *** results were compared to other machine learning models such as support vector regression,random forest,and k-nearest *** best results for the three datasets were obtained by the RNN-based models combined with the attention *** performances of the RNN and attention-based models are higher and would be more effective for applications in the business industry.

Current trends in staging rectal cancer

Management of rectal cancer has evolved over the years. In this condition preoperative investigations assist in deciding the optimal treatment. The relation of the tumor edge to the circumferential margin (CRM) is an important factor in deciding the need for neoadjuvant treatment and determines the prognosis. Those with threatened or involved margins are offered long course chemoradiation to enable R0 surgical resection. Endoanal ultrasound (EUS) is useful for tumor (T) staging; hence EUS is a useful imaging modality for early rectal cancer. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is useful for assessing the mesorectum and the mesorectal fascia which has useful prognostic significance and for early identification of local recurrence. Computerized tomography (CT) of the chest, abdomen and pelvis is used to rule out distant metastasis. Identification of the malignant nodes using EUS, CT and MRI is based on the size, morphology and internal characteristics but has drawbacks. Most of the common imaging techniques are suboptimal for imaging following chemoradiation as they struggle to differentiate fibrotic changes and tumor. In this situation, EUS and MRI may provide complementary information to decide further treatment. Functional imaging using positron emission tomography (PET) is useful, particularly PET/CT fusion scans to identify areas of the functionally hot spots. In the current state, imaging has enabled the multidisciplinary team of surgeons, oncologists, radiologists and pathologists to decide on the patient centered management of rectal cancer. In future, functional imaging may play an active role in identifying patients with lymph node metastasis and those with residual and recurrent disease following neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy.
