Striving for cleaner production is a sought-after manufacturing *** stir welding(FSW)is a joiningtechnique with par excellence and far less invasive to the environment than even best conventional welding *** is energyefficient and free from consumables,affluent and *** is,thus,accepted as a clean welding process that can produceacceptable quality *** suffers from some major challenges of defects of its own kind that subject the process open toimprovements so as to prove itself a reliable production *** study presents a holistic characterization of defects commonlyfound in FSW *** finding of the present study reveals that most defects are caused by inadequate heat generation,impropermaterial movement around the pin and inadequate material consolidation behind the *** amount of heat generation andmaterial stirring depends on several FSW parameters which may lead to the defect formation,if not selected *** resultsreported in this work are derived from sound literature support and *** are made in the form ofcharacteristics of defects such as likelihood of their location,main responsible parameters along with the recommendations forminimizing them.

Caffeine intake by pregnant women, adults and children can be harmful to the health of all particularly fetuses if the intake exceeds the permissible limits. Therefore, it is of fundamental importance to measure its concentration accurately using certified reference materials (CRms). In the literature, no scientific details are published about the certification of caffeine standard solutions, and therefore, the present article covers this gap. A batch of caffeine solution was prepared in concentration of 1000 mg/kg and bottled. Homogeneity and stability of the candidate reference material were assessed by HPLC-UV and the results showed that the material is homogenous and stable enough. Characterization of the caffeine reference material was performed by HPLC-UV, LC-mS/mS and UV-VIS-NIR spectrophotometer in three different days and the characterization uncertainty was estimated in accordance with the requirements of ISO GUm. The certified value (999.86 ± 8.57 mg/kg) was derived as a weighted mean from the gravimetry and the three characterization methods and the certified uncertainty was calculated according to ISO Guide 35. The produced CRm is of strong interest to the food and drug analytical laboratories for the validity and credibility of their caffeine measurement results.

Aspirin and clopidogrel are the commonest dual antiplatelet agents being used in the secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease. In high risk patients with coronary heart disease, the use of aspirin was associated with a significant risk reduction of myocardial infarction, stroke and vascular death. The use of clopidogrel alone was slightly superior to aspirin, and associated with reduced risk of vascular death, ischemic stroke and myocardial infarction. Dual antiplatelet therapy has been well studied in patients with acute coronary syndrome and those undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). In patients with stable coronary heart disease or multiple risk factors the combination of clopidogrel plus aspirin was not significantly more effective than aspirin alone in reducing mI, stroke or death from cardiovascular causes.

Validation of a method for the measurement of Caffeine in Water by HPLC-UV

For the production of a reference material from caffeine solution, one of the methods of characterization was HPLC-UV since caffeine is very sensitive to the UV. In this work, a batch solution of caffeine in water reference material of 1000 mg/kg has been gravimetrically prepared using a calibrated analytical balance. A sample of this solution was diluted to 25 mg/kg for measurement by HPLC-UV in the range 10 - 50 mg/kg. The chromatographic separation was carried out by C-18 column and a mobile phase assembled of 75% water and 25% methanol (v:v). The detection was made by the UV detector at 275 nm. The validation of this analytical method was carried out in accordance with requirements of the EURACHEm and ICH guidelines. The selectivity, linearity, accuracy, precision and trueness (recovery and bias) of the method were studied. The validation results proved that the method is fit-for-purpose of measuring the caffeine concentration in water in the range 10 - 50 mg/kg using HPLC-UV.

AIm: To assess the efficacy and safety of combinedpegylated interferon and ribavirin therapy in hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection in renal transplant recipients. mETHODS: This is a retrospective chart review of post renal transplant patients who were positive for anti-HCV and HCV-RNA, and who have received treatment with combination of pegylated interferon and ribavirin between October 2003 and December 2008. Only patients with stable graft function and absence of evidence of cirrhosis and who received the therapy for continuous 48 wk were included. Nineteen patients (13 male and 6 female) were identified and included. The patient's complete blood count, liver and kidney prof ile, and cal- culated glomerular f iltration rate (GFR) were monitored every 6-8 wk while on treatment. HCV-RNA was tested at 12 wk for early virological response, at 48 wk for end of treatment response (ETR), and then retested at 24, and 48 wk after completion of therapy for sustained virological response (SVR). Liver biopsies were obtained before treatment from all patients and graft kidney biopsies were performed as required. RESULTS: Of the entire cohort, 9 patients (47.4%) showed an ETR and 8 had SVR (42.1%). Of the 8 patients with abnormal alanine aminotransferase (ALT) levels at baseline, 78.9% had their ALT normalized (including the virological non responders). ALT was normal in all responders at the end of therapy and at 24 wk post therapy (100%). Only one patient (5.3%) developed an increase in creatinine and decline in GFR from baseline towards the end of treatment. This patient's kidney biopsy revealed borderline rejection. There was no impact on response by HCV-genotype, initial HCV RNA load, age or sex of the patient or duration post transplant before commencement of therapy. All patients tolerated treatment in the same way as non-transplant with no unusual or increased occurrence of side effects. The concentrations of Ag, Co and Ni in the sediments and the different organs of Typha domingensis from Lake Burullus, Egypt, were investigated monthly from February to September 2010 to evaluate the aquatic environment quality of the lake and to test the suitability of these organs for bio-indicating of sediment metals. The sediment heavy metals were found to decrease in the order of Ni > Co > Ag. The sediment contents of Ag were about 45 times above the worldwide range. On the other hand, Co concentrations were below the reference ranges of United States and Chinese soils. The heavy metals bioaccumulation decreased according to the order of rhizome > root > leaf for Ag;and root > rhizome > leaf for Co and Ni. It was found also that, T. domingensis had no significant differences in heavy metals concentrations over time. The transfer factors of Ag, Co and Ni from sediment to below-ground organs were smaller than one. Co had the maximum transport from below-ground to above-ground organs, while Ag had the minimum. There was a significant linear correlation between the concentration of Ag in root of T. domingensis and that in sediment. This result suggested that T. domingensis can be regarded as bio-indicator for Ag pollution of Lake Burullus.

Background Although epilepsy has been acknowledged as an illness since ancient time,the public attitude toward epilepsy has not changed drastically due to the lack of appropriate *** study aims to determine the public perceptions of epilepsy in five main regions of Saudi *** In this cross-sectional questionnaire-based study,Saudi citizens living in the major cities of the five main regions of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia(the central,eastern,western,northern,and southern regions)completed the survey that included 27 questions about epilepsy *** A total of 7118 individuals from five regions participated in the survey:6749(94.8%)of respondents were Saudi,and 369(5.2%)were *** the 7118 respondents,6897 respondents(96.9%)did not have epilepsy,and 3378 respondents(47.5%)stated that they had never witnessed an epileptic *** addition,3749(52.7%)respondents incorrectly attributed epilepsy to non-neurologic conditions,and 4865(68.3%)respondents had an overall negative attitude toward people with epilepsy(PWE).They expressed objections to their child associating with PWE(2002;28.1%)or their close relatives marrying PWE(3192;44.8%),some believed that PWE are inferior(402;5.6%),refused to hire a PWE(1126;15.8%),and would feel discomfort around PWE(724;10.3%).In addition,2025 individuals(28.4%)believed that the health of PWE deteriorates over time;1485 individuals(20.9%)believed that PWE get sick more often than others;181 individuals(2.5%)believed that epilepsy could be transmitted;and 568 individuals(8.0%)believed that epilepsy could progress to malignant *** In Saudi Arabia,there is a substantial need for increasing the awareness and improving education on epilepsy in order to reduce stigma and increase the understanding of *** efforts could help improve the lives of people afflicted with the disease and ultimately contribute to better health outcomes for the entire community.
