Gastric antisecretory and antiulcer activity of bovine hemoglobin

AIM: To investigate gastric antisecretory and gastro- protective activity of bovine hemoglobin (B-Hb) in rats. METHODS: Adult albino-Wistar rats were divided into groups of 6 animals each. B-Hb in doses of 100, 300 and 900 mg/kg body weight was tested for gastric acid secretion and antiulcer activity. Gastric secretions were measured 6 h after pylorus ligation in rats pretreated with B-Hb. The acidity was measured by titrating gastric contents against 0.01 mol/L NaOH to pH 7. Indomethacin ulcers were produced by oral administration of 30 mg/kg bw in the rats pretreated with B-Hb one hour before indomethacin. Six hours after indomethacin stomach removed and ulcer index was recorded. Ethanol ulcer were produced by 1 mL of ethanol in the rats pretreated with B-Hb 30 min before the *** hour after ethanol stomach were cut open to score ulcers. Histological examination and analysis of gastric wall mucus, non-protein sulfhydryl groups (NP-SH), and myeloperoxidase (MPO) were carried in gastric tissue following ethanol administration. RESULTS: In control rats pylorus ligation for 6 h resulted in the accumulation of 8.1 ± 0.61 mL of gastric secretion. The treatment of the rats with 100, 300 and 900 mg/kg of B-Hb produced a significant decrease in the volume of gastric secretion 5.6 ± 0.63, 5.5 ± 0.75 and 4.7 ± 0.58 mL respectively as compared to the control group [analysis of variance (ANOVA) F = 4.77, P kg (24.3 ± 3.29 mm2), 300 mg/kg (16.2 ± 1.45 mm2) and 900 mg/kg (12.6 ± 1.85 mm2) produced a dose dependent decreased the lesion scores (ANOVA F = 4.50, P kg (2.5 ± 0.42), 300 mg/kg (2.1 ± 0.4) and 900 mg/kg (0.7 ± 0.21) significantly inhibited the formation of gas

Genetic association of apolipoprotein E polymorphisms with inflammatory bowel disease

AIM:To study the association of apolipoprotein E(APOE) polymorphisms with the susceptibility ofinflammatory bowel disease(IBD) in Saudi ***:APOE genotyping was performed to evaluate the allele and genotype frequencies in 378 Saudi subjects including IBD patients with ulcerative colitis(n = 84) or Crohn's disease(n = 94) and matched controls(n = 200) using polymerase chain reaction and reverse-hybridization ***:The frequencies of the APOE ε2 allele and ε2/ε3 and ε2/ε4 genotypes were significantly higher in IBD patients than in controls(P allele and its heterozygous genotypes may increase the susceptibility to *** the contrary,the frequencies of the ε3 allele and ε3/ε3 genotype were lower in IBD patients as compared to controls,suggesting a protective effect of APOE ε3 for *** prevalence of the ε4 allele was also higher in the patient group compared to controls,suggesting that the ε4 allele may also increase the risk of *** results also indicated that the APOE ε4 allele was associated with an early age of IBD *** effect of gender or type of IBD(familial or sporadic) on the frequency distribution of APOE alleles and genotypes was noticed in this ***:APOE polymorphism is associated with risk of developing IBD and early age of onset in Saudi patients,though further studies with a large-size population are warranted.

Availability, Performance and Reliability Evaluation for PV Distributed Generation

Nowadays, renewable energy resources play an important role in replacing conventional energy resources such as fossil fuel by integrating solar, wind and geothermal energy. Photovoltaic energy is one?of?the very promising renewable energy resources which grew rapidly in the past few years, it can be used to produce electric energy through photovoltaic process. The primary objective of the research proposed in this paper is to facilitate the increasing penetration levels of PV systems in the electric distribution networks. In this work, the PV module electrical model is presented based on the mathematical equations and was implemented on MATLAB to simulate the non-linear characteristics I-V and P-V curves with variable input parameters which are irradiance and temperature based on Riyadh region. In addition, the reliability evaluation of distribution networks, including distributed generators of solar photovoltaic (PV) with varying output power capacity is presented also. The Monte Carlo simulation algorithm is applied to test the distribution network which is RBTS Bus 2 and the same has been conducted on the original case of distribution network substation 7029 which is located at kSA Riyadh. The two distribution networks have been modified to include the PV’s distributed generators. The distributed generators contribute to supply a part of the load during normal mode and supply the entire load during component failure or failure of grid operation supply. The PV stochastic models have been used to simulate the randomness of these resources. Moreover, the study shows that the implementation and integration of renewable resources as distributed generations have improved the reliability of the distribution networks.

Severe autoimmune hepatitis triggered by varicella zoster infection

Autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) is a chronic disease of unknown etiology that is characterized by the presence of circulatory autoantibodies and inflammatory histological changes in the liver. although the pathogenesis of AIH is not known, it is thought that, in a genetically predisposed individual, environmental factors such as viruses can trigger the autoimmune process. Herpes simplex virus, Epstein-Barr virus, measles virus, and hepatitis viruses are thought to play a role in the etiology of AIH. Proteins belonging to these viruses may be similar to the amino acid chains of different autoantigens in the liver, this causes immune cross reactions and liver tissue damage. We report a case of severe AIH following varicella zoster infection in a 23-year-old man, and speculate that, based on the molecular mimicry hypothesis, the liver damage was caused by an immune cross reaction to the viral proteins. Varicella-zoster-induced AIH has not been reported previously.

Background although epilepsy has been acknowledged as an illness since ancient time,the public attitude toward epilepsy has not changed drastically due to the lack of appropriate *** study aims to determine the public perceptions of epilepsy in five main regions of Saudi *** In this cross-sectional questionnaire-based study,Saudi citizens living in the major cities of the five main regions of the kingdom of Saudi Arabia(the central,eastern,western,northern,and southern regions)completed the survey that included 27 questions about epilepsy *** A total of 7118 individuals from five regions participated in the survey:6749(94.8%)of respondents were Saudi,and 369(5.2%)were *** the 7118 respondents,6897 respondents(96.9%)did not have epilepsy,and 3378 respondents(47.5%)stated that they had never witnessed an epileptic *** addition,3749(52.7%)respondents incorrectly attributed epilepsy to non-neurologic conditions,and 4865(68.3%)respondents had an overall negative attitude toward people with epilepsy(PWE).They expressed objections to their child associating with PWE(2002;28.1%)or their close relatives marrying PWE(3192;44.8%),some believed that PWE are inferior(402;5.6%),refused to hire a PWE(1126;15.8%),and would feel discomfort around PWE(724;10.3%).In addition,2025 individuals(28.4%)believed that the health of PWE deteriorates over time;1485 individuals(20.9%)believed that PWE get sick more often than others;181 individuals(2.5%)believed that epilepsy could be transmitted;and 568 individuals(8.0%)believed that epilepsy could progress to malignant *** In Saudi Arabia,there is a substantial need for increasing the awareness and improving education on epilepsy in order to reduce stigma and increase the understanding of *** efforts could help improve the lives of people afflicted with the disease and ultimately contribute to better health outcomes for the entire community.

Optimization study of a PEM fuel cell performance using 3D multi-phase computational fluid dynamics model

An optimization study using a comprehensive 3D, multi-phase, non-isothermal model of a PEM （proton exchange membrane） fuel cell that incorporates significant physical processes and key parameters affecting fuel cell performance is presented and discussed in detail. The model accounts for both gas and liquid phase in the same computational domain, and thus allows for the implementation of phase change inside the gas diffusion layers. The model includes the transport of gaseous species, liquid water, protons, energy, and water dissolved in the ion-conducting polymer. Water is assumed to be exchanged among three phases： liquid, vapottr, and dissolved, with equilibrium among these phases being assumed. This model also takes into account convection and diffusion of different species in the channels as well as in the porous gas diffusion layer, heat transfer in the solids as well as in the gases, and electrochemical reactions. The results showed that the present multi-phase model is capable of identifying important parameters for the wetting behaviour of the gas diffusion layers and can be used to identify conditions that might lead to the onset of pore plugging, which has a detrimental effect on the fuel cell performance. This model is used to study the effects of several operating, design, and material parameters on fuel cell performance. Detailed analyses of the fuel cell performance under various operating conditions have been conducted and examined.
