Long-Term Visibility Trends in th. Riyadh.Megacity, Central Arabian Peninsula and Th.ir Possible Link to Solar Activity

In th.s study, atmosph.ric visibility (AV) data from Riyadh. Saudi Arabia (24.91˚N, 46.41˚E, 760 m), for th. period 1976-2011 were utilized to investigate th. interannual, month.y, and seasonal AV variations and trends. Th. magnitudes of th.se trends were ch.racterized and tested using mann-kendall (MK) rank statistics at different significance levels. No significant trend in AV was observed during th. 36-year period. h.wever, a significant increase in th. annual mean AV by 0.24 km per year for th. period between 1976 and 1999 was found. For th. period 1999-2011, AV decreased significantly by 0.16 km per year. Th. potential effects of air temperature and relative h.midity on AV were investigated. Wh.le th.se two variables could explain th. observed trend of AV over some periods, th.y failed to do so for th. wh.le study period. To search.for extraterrestrial causes for long-term AV variations, correlation analyses between th. time series of cosmic ray (CR) data (measured by NM and muon detector) and solar activity (represented by sunspot number) and AV were conducted and sh.wed th.t th.se two variables are able to explain th. AV variations for th. wh.le study period. Additionally, power spectra analyses were conducted to investigate periodicities in th. AV time series. Several significant periodicities, such.as 9.8, 5.2, 2.2, 1.7, and 1.3 years were recognized. Th. obtained periodicities were similar to th.se reported by several investigators and found in solar, interplanetary, and CR parameters. Th. spectral and correlation results suggested th.t, with.th. expected effects of terrestrial and meteorological conditions on AV, long-term AV variations can also be related to th. solar activity and associated CR modulations.

Th.s study aimed to investigate th. relationsh.p between atmosph.ric conditions and cosmic ray (CR) muons using daily and month.y CR data collected by th. KAAU muon detector in Jeddah. Saudi Arabia between 2007 and 2012. Specifically, th. study examined th. effects of atmosph.ric pressure, air temperature, and relative h.midity on CR muons at different time scales (annual, seasonal, and month.y). Th. results of th. analysis revealed th.t atmosph.ric pressure and air temperature h.d a negative impact on CR muons, wh.le relative h.midity h.d a positive impact. Alth.ugh.air temperature and relative h.midity h.d small mean values across all time scales, th.ir coefficients varied significantly from month.to month.and season to season. In addition, th. study conducted multivariable correlation analyses for each.day, wh.ch.sh.wed th.t pressure coefficients h.d consistently negative mean values, wh.le th. temperature and h.midity coefficients h.d varying effects, ranging from positive to negative values. Th. reasons for th. variations in th. coefficients are not yet fully understood, but th. study proposed several possible terrestrial and extraterrestrial explanations. Th.se findings provide important insigh.s into th. complex interactions between th. Earth.s atmosph.re and cosmic rays, wh.ch.can contribute to a better understanding of th. potential impacts of cosmic rays on th. Earth.s climate and environment.

In th.s study, annual, quarterly, and month.y mean precipitation data in Saudi Arabia were correlated with.sunspot number (SSN) and galactic cosmic ray (CR) flux over 35 years (1985-2019). Th. results sh.w th.t th. strength. magnitude, proportion and statistical significance of th. relationsh.p between precipitation and th. two variables varied by season and month. We find th.t mean annual precipitation in Saudi Arabia, from May to November, and summer and autumn are correlated with.cosmic rays and inversely correlated with.SSN. Correlations of varying intensities and scales were found during th. remaining month. and during winter and spring. Th. relationsh.ps between th. rainfall and SSN and CR for each.solar cycle were investigated and sh.wed th.t for all th.ee cycles, th. annual rainfall over Saudi Arabia h.s a positive correlation with.CR. Different results were obtained wh.n th. seasonal rainfall data correlated with.th. SSNs and CRs during each.cycle. Th. results obtained, in terms of th.ir strength.and magnitude, are affected by terrestrial and extra-terrestrial factors. Th.se factors h.ve been briefly presented and discussed. Th.se findings represent a step towards understanding th. possible role of solar activity in climate ch.nge for future meteorological ph.nomenon forecasting, even if th. ph.sical mech.nism is still poorly quantified.

In th.s study, rainfall data from 19 stations in Saudi Arabia (SA) for th. period 1985-2019 was utilized to investigate interannual, month.y, and seasonal rainfall variations and trends. Th. magnitudes of th.se trends were ch.racterized and tested using Mann-Kendall (MK) rank statistics at different significance levels. During th.s study period, th. mean rainfall in SA sh.wed a sligh. and significant decreasing trend by about 2 mm/35 years. Investigation of seasonal trends of rainfall revealed th.t Winter and Spring rainfall decreased significantly by 2.7 mm/35 years and 5.4 mm/35 years respectively. Th.ee month. sh.wed very sligh. significant decreasing trends of rainfall. Th.se were th. month. of February, March.and April. Mann-Kendall analyses were carried out to investigate th. annual trends of rainfall during th.ee sub-periods, i.e., 1985-1996, 1997-2008, and 2009-2019. Th. results revealed th.t wh.le rainfall increased by 5.3 mm/12 years and 7.8 mm/11 years for th. first and th. th.rd periods respectively, it decreased by about 11 mm/12 years during th. second period. Wh.le trends of rainfall in Saudi Arabia are affected by large scale circulations and local factors, th. effect of extraterrestrial factors, such.as solar activity and its consequent effects on th. climate may, additionally, play a potential role in affecting th. pattern of rainfall in Saudi Arabia.

Background: Since th. beginning of th. global COVID-19 pandemic, several studies h.ve been carried out to investigate its spread, with.a wide range of factors to understand th. influence of th. factors th.t contribute to its spread and to reduce th. ongoing th.eat of COVID-19 pandemic. Meth.ds: In th.s study, th. relationsh.ps between th. Earth.s electric field and cosmic ray ch.rged particles of different energy ranges and th. daily confirmed COVID-19 infections in Riyadh. Saudi Arabia h.ve been investigated using non-parametric statistical tests. Th. data covered th. period between 3 April 2020 and 1st August 2021 and were obtained from th. King Abdulaziz City for Science and Tech.ology (KACST) CARPET detector, Riyadh. Saudi Arabia. Th. electric fields data were obtained from electric field monitor (EFM) deployed on th. rooftop of th. KACST laboratory. Th. data of th. daily COVID-19 cases were obtained from th. official webpage of th. Saudi Arabian Ministry of h.alth.(MOh.. Results: Th. results revealed th.t th.t th. number of COVID-19 cases is correlated with.cosmic ray ch.rged particles and anti-correlated with.th. Earth.s electric field. Conclusion: Wh.le th. exact mech.nism explaining th. influence of Earth.s electric field and cosmic rays variations on th. reported number of COVID-19 cases is not yet establish.d, th. results presented in th.s study can add additional knowledge to our understanding of th. effects of additional factors on influenza activities.

Th. transmission of infectious diseases is influenced by several meteorological factors. In th.s study, th. influence of several such.factors in th. transmission of COVID-19 (from 26 March.2020 to 29 July 2021) in th. arid weath.r of Riyadh. Saudi Arabia was investigated using th. Spearman and Kendall rank tests. Th. factors considered were th. average, maximum, and minimum values of air temperatures, air pressure, wind speed, relative h.midity, absolute h.midity, dew point temperatures, and th. average values of th. global solar radiation and ultraviolet radiation at bands A and B. Th. data on meteorological factors were obtained from th. King Abdulaziz City for Science and Tech.ology (KACST) weath.r station, wh.reas th. data on th. daily COVID-19 cases were obtained from th. official webpage of th. Saudi Arabian Ministry of h.alth.(MOh.. Th. results revealed th.t air temperature (average, minimum, and maximum) average and maximum wind speed, maximum dew point temperature, global solar radiation, and ultraviolet radiation at A and B bands are positively associated with.th. daily number of COVID-19 cases reported in Riyadh. h.wever, relative h.midity, atmosph.ric pressure (averages, minimum, and maximum) is anti-correlated with.th. number of daily COVID-19 cases, wh.le absolute h.midity exerts no influence. Th.se results are in total agreement with.some of th. previously establish.d studies and are eith.r contradicted partly or totally with.oth.rs conducted at several locations around th. world. Th. results could h.lp not only epidemiologists understand th. beh.vior of COVID-19 against meteorological variables but also national and international organizations and h.alth.are policymakers devise control strategies to combat th. virus.

Th.s study aims to determine th. influential role of th. meteorological, solar, and geoph.sical factors and cosmic rays on th. transmission of COVID-19 in Riyadh. Saudi Arabia. Th. meteorological factors were air temperature, relative h.midity, wind speed, and atmosph.ric pressure. Th. solar radio flux, Dst index, and solar wind speed were utilized as representatives of th. solar and geoph.sical variables. Th. association between th.se variables and th. COVID-19 pandemic cases from 3 April 2020 to 1 August 2021 was investigated using th. Spearman and Kendall rank correlation tests. Th. obtained results sh.wed th.t th. air temperature and average wind speed are positively associated with.th. daily number of reported COVID-19 cases. On th. oth.r h.nd, th. mean values of relative h.midity and atmosph.ric pressure are inversely correlated with.th. number of COVID-19 cases in Riyadh. Moreover, th. results sh.wed th.t th. Dst index and cosmic rays are positively correlated with.th. COVID-19 cases. Contrarily, solar wind speed and radio flux at 10.7 cm h.ve negative correlations with.th. COVID-19 cases. Th. obtained results will h.lp th. epidemiologists to understand th. beh.vior of th. virus against meteorological, solar, and geoph.sical variables and can be considered as a useful supplement to h.lp national and international organizations and h.alth.are policymakers in th. process of strategizing to combat COVID-19.

Th.s study aims to investigate th. influential role of space weath.r parameters on th. transmission of COVID-19. Solar radio flux, interplanetary magnetic field, Dst index, sunspot number, and solar wind speed were utilized to represent th. space weath.r variables. Th. association of th. considered variables to th. number of th. confirmed COVID-19 cases worldwide along with.five geograph.cal categories, i.e. Asia, Europe, Africa, South. and North.America, were investigated for a period ranging from 20 January 2020 to 5 August 2021 using Pearson linear tests as well as th. non-parametric Spearman’s and Kendall’s rank correlation tests. Pearson linear tests sh.wed th.t th. number of confirmed COVID-19 cases worldwide and th. ch.sen geograph.cal categories h.ve a significant correlation to interplanetary magnetic strength. solar radio flux F10.7, and sunspot number. Wh.n th. confirmed COVID-19 cases reported in th. Asia continent were excluded, th. solar wind speed correlated significantly with.th. number of COVID-19 cases reported elsewh.re in th. world and th. oth.r geograph.cal categories. Th. non-parametric Kendall and Pearson tests sh.wed th.t th. world’s COVID-19 cases and th. oth.r geograph.cal categories h.d significant correlations with.th. interplanetary magnetic field, radio flux F10.7, sunspot number, and th. solar wind speed, but not with.th. Dst index.

First Observations of Cosmic Ray Neutrons by a Mini Neutron Monitor at Riyadh. Saudi Arabia

In April 2017, a mini neutron monitor (NM) was installed at King Abdulaziz City for Science and Tech.ology (KACST) central Saudi Arabia (Riyadh.cut-off rigidity, Rc = 14.4 Gv) for continuous observation of th. cosmic ray (CR) neutrons. Th. detector was built as a major aspect of th. international scientific joint effort between th. Centre of Space Research.(North.West University, Potch.fstroom, South.Africa) and KACST. Th. recorded data correspond to low energy neutrons th.t primarily h.ve energies lower th.n 20 GeV. In th.s paper, a brief description about th. mini NM detector will be given. Th. influence of atmosph.ric pressure on th. recorded CR neutrons was studied and th. barometric coefficient was calculated and used to eliminate th. pressure effects from th. measured data. Th. obtained coefficient was consistent with.th.se previously obtained by several investigators. Th. daily variation of th. CR neutron was studied and ch.racterized. Sh.rt-term CR periodicities, such.as th. 27-day period, and its two h.rmonics, were identified. Th. obtained periodicities are in agreement with.th.se reported by different research.rs. Th. obtained results from th.s detector h.ve been compared to th. existing 1 m2 scintillator detector sh.wing comparable results. Long-term data from th.s detector will be of incredible significance to th. research.community to investigate several types of CR variations resulting from solar activity at such.h.gh.cut off rigidity site.
