Characterisation of Hydrological Drought and Implications for Sustainable Water Resources Management in the Sokoto-Rima River Basin (SRRB), Nigeria

Hydrological drought is usually characterised by water loss over time from both underground and surface supplies. Thus for this study, the assessment of hydrological drought was carried out by employing Cumulative Rainfall/Streamflow Anomaly as preliminary tools for the presence of drought signatures while detailed characterisation was via Streamflow Drought Index (SDI). The results revealed that hydrological drought was observed in all the stations;however, though in general, the stations could be classified as experiencing near normal drought conditions with mild drought signatures. The findings also revealed that the average streamflow deficit volume and durations of the hydrological drought severity were 1.780 Mm3 and 192 months, 1.444 Mm3 and 252 months, 3.148 Mm3 and 252 months, and 0.159 Mm3 and 372 months for Bakolori, Goronyo (pre dam construction era), Goronyo (post dam construction era) and Zobe stations, respectively. The results also revealed the relevance of flow duration curve and analysis of frequency of drought state transition for the development of scenario-based basin water resources management protocol. The coefficient of determination (R2) statistic of the developed regression models indicate that 73.3% and 86.5% variation in streamflow dynamics across the Basin can be explained by climate change variables. Though vaccination protects individuals against many infectious diseases,such protection does not always last forever since a few vaccinated individuals could lose their lifelong immunity and eventually become *** study,therefore,determines the effects of imperfect vaccination and memory index on the spread of diseases through the Caputo fractional-order SIRV(Susceptible-Infected-Recovered-Vaccinated)epidemic *** properties of the new model including the conditions for the existence of a unique solution determined through the fixed-point theory and the conditions for the existence of a positive solution of the model obtained via the Mittag-Leffler function along with the Laplace transformation-are thoroughly ***,our simulation results report that an increase in the imperfect vaccination force increases the population of infected *** the memory effect,the higher“memory”the epidemic system has of past states(which corresponds to decreasing values of fractionalorder parameter),the greater the peaks and magnitudes of infection shaping the epidemiological system dynamics.

This study aims to investigate the potential impact of inhibitors targeting the papain-like protease(PLpro)of SARS-CoV-2 on viral replication and the host immune response.A mathematical model was developed to simulate the interaction among susceptible cells,infected cells,PLpro,and immune cells,incorporating data on PLpro *** numerical simulations using MATLAB,the model parameters were estimated based on available statistical *** results indicate that strategically positioned inhibitors could impede the virus’s access to host cellular machinery,thereby enhancing the immune response and gradually reducing susceptible and infected cells over *** dynamics of the viral enzyme PLpro showed reduced activity with the introduction of the inhibitor,leading to a decline in viral ***,the immune cell population exhibited functional recovery as the inhibitor suppressed PLpro *** findings suggest that inhibitors targeting PLpro may serve as therapeutic interventions against SARS-CoV-2 by inhibiting viral replication and bolstering the immune response.

Introduction: Healthcare workers in Mogadishu, Somalia face significant occupational injury risks, particularly needle stick injuries, with 61.1% reporting incidents. This poses a serious threat to their health, leading to infections such as hepatitis B, hepatitis C, and HIV. Despite the high prevalence of injuries, awareness of Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) accessibility is relatively high, with 84.0% of respondents aware of it. However, there are gaps in knowledge and implementation, as evidenced by variations in availability of PEP. Improving workplace safety measures, providing comprehensive training on injury prevention and PEP protocols, and ensuring consistent availability of PEP in healthcare facilities are crucial steps to safeguard the well-being of healthcare workers in Mogadishu, Somalia. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among hospital workers in Mogadishu, Somalia, focusing on professionals from various healthcare facilities. The study targeted nurses, doctors, laboratory personnel, and pharmacists. Purposive sampling was employed, resulting in a sample size of 383 calculated using Fisher’s sample size formula. Data were collected using coded questionnaires entered into Microsoft Excel 2019 and analyzed with SPSS software to generate frequencies and proportions, presented through frequency tables and pie figures. Results: The study in Mogadishu, Somalia, examined the prevalence of occupational injuries and knowledge of Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) accessibility among healthcare workers. Findings indicate a high prevalence of injuries, with 61.1% reporting incidents, predominantly needle stick injuries (60.6%). Despite the majority seeking prompt medical attention (72.0%), work-related illnesses affected 53.2% of respondents, notably work-related stress (59.5%).
