Neonatal Kawasaki Disease: A Case Report

Objective: To report a case of Kawasaki disease (KD) with unusual age at presentation. Case Report: A 26-day.old Saudi boy.presented with fever, irritability.and poor feeding for 3 day.. There was right cervical ly.ph node enlargement. There was mild throat congestion and bilateral congested ty.panic membrane. The liver was palpable. Otherwise, there were no more abnormal phy.ical findings. Laboratory.findings revealed high ery.hrocy.e sedimentation rate and positive C-reactive protein. The patient was admitted into an isolation room and antibiotics were started. On the 5th day. the condition of the patient deteriorated. Ampicillin was discontinued and vancomy.in was started till getting the results of the culture sensitivity. On the 7th day. he developed diaper rash and fever spikes continued. On the 8th day. the patient developed swelling, redness and hotness of the right hand. Possibility.of sepsis was considered and the administered antibiotics were imipenem and vancomy.in, while cefotaxime was discontinued. On the 12th day. the patient developed anemia and leukocy.osis. Gamma glutamy. transpeptidase was high. On the 15th day. the patient started to develop maculopapular rash on the trunk and desquamation of both hands and feet with swelling, cracked lips, bilateral conjunctival injection and unilateral neck ly.ph node swelling. So, the infant’s condition was clinically.diagnosed as KD. Aspirin was started and 2 doses of intravenous immunoglobulins were given. On the 18th day. the condition of patient improved and the fever subsided. Conclusions: The diagnosis of KD among neonates is a clinical challenge. Diagnosis is based on clinical criteria after the exclusion of other diseases presenting with high persistent fever. Early.treatment by.administering intravenous immunoglobulins and aspirin can help prevent cardiac complications. There is a pressing need to raise awareness among pediatricians about this disease.

Above-Ground Biomass, Nutrients and Carbon in Aegiceras corniculatum of the Sundarbans

Aegiceras corniculatum grows as single-stemmed evergreen shrub or small tree in the Sundarbans mangrove forest of Bangladesh. The objectives of this study.were to derive the allometric models for estimating above-ground biomass, nutrients (N, P and K) and carbon stock in A. corniclatum. A total of 8 linear models (y.= aX + b, , y.= alogX + b, Logy.= aX + b, Logy.= alogX + b, y.= alnX + b, Lny.= aX + b and Lny.= alnX + b) with 64 regression equations were tested to derive the allometric model for biomass of each plant part;and nutrients and carbon stock in total aboveground biomass. The best fit allometric models were selected by.considering the values of R2, CV, Rmse, mSerror, Sa, Sb, F value, AICc and Furnival Index. The selected allometric models were Logbiomass = 0.76LogDBH2 - 1.39;Biomass = 0.07DBH2 - 0.49;Logbiomass = 1.04LogDBH2 - 1.80;Logbiomass = 1.04LogDBH2 - 0.99;= 0.48DBH - 0.13 for leaves, branches, bark, stem without bark and total above-ground biomass respectively. The selected allometric models for Nitrogen, Phosphorous, Potassium and Carbon stock in total above-ground biomass were = 0.67DBH + 0.11;= 0.94DBH + 0.08;= 1.06DBH - 0.18;= 0.33DBH - 0.09 respectively.

Poor Knowledge of Tuberculosis among the Population of Jeddah and makkah Saudi Arabia, a High-Risk Area

SETTING: millions of pilgrims visit makkah (mecca), Saudi Arabia, from regions of endemic tuberculosis. Little consideration has been given to the potential impact of this disease on the local population. OBJECTIVES: To assess knowledge about TB among residents of makkah and Jeddah (makkah’s principal travel gateway.. mETHODS: A cross-sectional survey.of 1004 residents. Data were analy.ed by.gender. RESULTS: Spread of TB by.coughing was a transmission route known by.44.2% of males and 59.6% of females (P y.bacteria;71.6% of females and 52.3% of males knew TB is infectious (P all, 50.6% of males and 38.3% of females (P modern medical treatment if hemopty.is occurred. With a persistent cough, 65.4% of respondents would do nothing or wait before consulting a healthcare provider. High numbers of “don’t know” responses were recorded throughout the survey. CONCLUSIONS: Within the population across pilgrimage areas in Saudi Arabia, knowledge is lacking concerning TB transmission, the cause of the disease, means of prevention and the success of treatment, highlighting an urge need for better public education.

Fermentation Kinetics of media Optimization for the Production of alpha Amy.ase by.a New Isolate of Aspergillus Ory.ae

The present study.is concerned with the isolation and screening of different strains of Aspergillus ory.ae for the production of alpha amy.ase. Ninety.strains were isolated from soil and tested for the production of alpha amy.ase in shake flasks. Of all the strains tested, Aspergillus ory.ae GCB-32 and Aspergillus ory.ae GCB-35 gave maximum production of alpha amy.ase. Different culture media were screened for the production of alpha amy.ase by.these two strains. m1 medium containing starch, y.ast extract, NH4Cl, mgSO4·7H2O and CaCl2 gave the maximum production of alpha amy.ase by.both the strains Aspergillus ory.ae GCB-32 and Aspergillus ory.ae *** analy.is revealed that the values of product y.eld coefficient（y.p/x ） and specific product y.eld coefficient（qp） were found highly.significant（p≤0.05） when medium m1 was used for the enzy.e production.
