Antihypertensive efficacy of extract of Hedera helix in high salt-induced hypertensive Sprague-Dawley rats

Objective: To explore the antihypertensive effect of extracts from the leaves of Hedera helix(H. helix) on normotensive and hypertensive rats in-vivo followed by vasodilatory studies in-vitro.Methods: The crude methanolic extract was prepared and the activity directed fractionation was carried out. Spectrophotometric analysis of total phenolic and flavonoid content was also done. HPLC analysis was performed for the detection of hederacoside C. In-vivo blood pressure study was carried out in normotensive and high salt-induced hypertensive SpragueDawley rats. Isolated aortic tissues from rat and rabbit were used for in-vitro studies. The effects were recorded and analyzed through PowerL ab data acquisition system. Results: Crude extract of H. helix(1-30 mg/kg) decreased blood pressure to greater extent in high salt-induced hypertensive rats in-vivo compared to the normotensive [Max. fall(58.59±0.02) mm Hg vs.(67.53±3.07) mmH g]. The n-hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate and aqueous fractions were also checked. These fractions were more effective in hypertensive rats. Aqueous fraction was more potent and n-hexane the least. In isolated rat aortic rings precontracted with phenylephrine, crude extract induced endothelium-dependent effect. The endothelium-dependent component of vasodilatory effect was ablated with L-NAME, and denudation of endothelium. The aqueous fraction was most potent vasodilator. In aortic rings from hypertensive rats, extract and fractions produced partial endothelium-independent effect which was not affected by pretreatment with L-NAME, indicating endothelium dysfunction in the hypertensive rats and suggesting additional vasodilatory mechanisms. In rabbit aorta, the extract and fractions also inhibited phenylephrine and high K^+-induced precontractions, and shifted Ca^(++) concentration–response curves. Conclusions: Our findings indicate that extract and fractions of H. helix are antihypertensive remedies, which is the outcome of vasodilatory effect. This vasodilatory effect is mediated through ni

The present work describes the fractional view analysis of Newell-Whitehead-Segal equations,using an innovative technique.The work is carried with the help of the Caputo operator of fractional derivative.The analytical solutions of some numerical examples are presented to confirm the reliability of the proposed method.The derived results are very consistent with the actual solutions to the problems.A graphical representation has been done for the solution of the problems at various fractional-order derivatives.Moreover,the solution in series form has the desired rate of convergence and provides the closed-form solutions.It is noted that the procedure can be modified in other directions for fractional order problems.

A consensus meeting of national experts from all major national hepatobiliary centres in the country was held on May 26,2023,at the Pakistan Kidney and Liver Institute&Research Centre(PKLI&RC)after initial consultations with the experts.The Pakistan Society for the Study of Liver Diseases(PSSLD)and PKLI&RC jointly organised this meeting.This effort was based on a comprehensive literature review to establish national practice guidelines for hilar cholangiocarcinoma(hCCA).The consensus was that hCCA is a complex disease and requires a multidisciplinary team approach to best manage these patients.This coordinated effort can minimise delays and give patients a chance for curative treatment and effective palliation.The diagnostic and staging workup includes high-quality computed tomography,magnetic resonance imaging,and magnetic resonance cholangiopancreato-graphy.Brush cytology or biopsy utilizing endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography is a mainstay for diagnosis.However,histopathologic confirmation is not always required before resection.Endoscopic ultrasound with fine needle aspiration of regional lymph nodes and positron emission tomography scan are valuable adjuncts for staging.The only curative treatment is the surgical resection of the biliary tree based on the Bismuth-Corlette classification.Selected patients with unresectable hCCA can be considered for liver transplantation.Adjuvant chemotherapy should be offered to patients with a high risk of recurrence.The use of preoperative biliary drainage and the need for portal vein embolisation should be based on local multidisciplinary discussions.Patients with acute cholangitis can be drained with endoscopic or percutaneous biliary drainage.Palliative chemotherapy with cisplatin and gemcitabine has shown improved survival in patients with irresectable and recurrent hCCA.

Objective:To evaluate spasmolytic mechanisms of aqueous and methanolic extracts from Distemonanthus benthamianus trunk-bark.Methods:Spasmolytic activities of extracts were evaluated in vitro on spontaneous and potassium chloride-induced jejunum contractions,or against cholinergic[acetylcholine(0.3μmol/L)]stimulations.High performance liquid chromatography analysis of both extracts was performed in reference to standard compounds.Results:Extracts developed concentration-dependent inhibitory activities.The methanolic extract,which revealed better activity,produced spasmolytic and myorelaxant effects at concentrations of 0.01-0.30 mg/mL with EC(50)of 0.06 and 0.09 mg/mL(95%CI:0.03-0.3 mg/mL),respectively.Its anticholinergic effect was obtained at the same concentrations with EC(50)of 0.11 mg/mL(95%CI:0.03-0.3 mg/mL).Chromatograms showed the presence of gallic acid in both extracts,rutin being only detected in the aqueous extract.Conclusions:Distemonanthus benthamianus extracts exhibit verapamil and atropine-like activities,thus highlighting calcium channels and muscarinic receptors blocking potentials,which may be conveyed by some phenolic compounds.These results confirm the antidiarrheal activity of Distemonanthus benthamianus extracts.

An Implementation of Multiscale Line Detection and Mathematical Morphology for Efficient and Precise Blood Vessel Segmentation in Fundus Images

Diagnosing various diseases such as glaucoma,age-related macular degeneration,cardiovascular conditions,and diabetic retinopathy involves segmenting retinal blood vessels.The task is particularly challenging when dealing with color fundus images due to issues like non-uniformillumination,low contrast,and variations in vessel appearance,especially in the presence of different pathologies.Furthermore,the speed of the retinal vessel segmentation system is of utmost importance.With the surge of now available big data,the speed of the algorithm becomes increasingly important,carrying almost equivalent weightage to the accuracy of the algorithm.To address these challenges,we present a novel approach for retinal vessel segmentation,leveraging efficient and robust techniques based on multiscale line detection and mathematical morphology.Our algorithm’s performance is evaluated on two publicly available datasets,namely the Digital Retinal Images for Vessel Extraction dataset(DRIVE)and the Structure Analysis of Retina(STARE)dataset.The experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of our method,withmean accuracy values of 0.9467 forDRIVE and 0.9535 for STARE datasets,aswell as sensitivity values of 0.6952 forDRIVE and 0.6809 for STARE datasets.Notably,our algorithmexhibits competitive performance with state-of-the-art methods.Importantly,it operates at an average speed of 3.73 s per image for DRIVE and 3.75 s for STARE datasets.It is worth noting that these results were achieved using Matlab scripts containing multiple loops.This suggests that the processing time can be further reduced by replacing loops with vectorization.Thus the proposed algorithm can be deployed in real time applications.In summary,our proposed system strikes a fine balance between swift computation and accuracy that is on par with the best available methods in the field.

Human saliva is an indispensable fluid that maintains a healthy oral cavity which otherwise can lead to oral diseases(dental caries and periodontitis).In addition,salivary metabolites and microbiome profile provide early detection of systemic diseases such as cancer and obesity.Salivary diagnostic has gained popularity due to its non-invasive sampling technique.Fasting(abstinence from food or drink or both)research for weight loss and improve health is common,but studies using fasting saliva are scarce.Some metabolites in fasting saliva have been reported with interesting results,which can be enhanced by considering different confounding factors.For example,fasting saliva contains higher salivary nitrite,which is related to nitric oxide(NO).NO is a vasodilator supporting the healthy function of endothelial cells and its deficiency is connected to many diseases.The timely supply of NO through exogenous and endogenous means is highlighted and the potential advantage of fasting salivary composition changes in relation to COVID-19 infection is speculated.This review aims to provide a general discussion on the salivary composition,properties,and functions of the whole saliva,including the health benefits of fasting.

Industry 4.0 is a digital paradigm that refers to the integration of cutting-edge computing and digital technologies into global industries because of which the state of manufacturing,communication,and control of smart industries has changed altogether.Industry 4.0 has been profoundly influenced by some major disruptive technologies such as the Internet of Things(IoT),smart sensors,machine learning and artificial intelligence,cloud computing,big data analytics,advanced robotics,augmented reality,3D printing,and smart adaptive communication.In this review paper,we discuss physical layer-based solutions with a focus on high reliability and seamless connectivity for Industry 4.0 and beyond applications.First,we present a harmonized review of the industrial revolution journey,industrial communication infrastructure,key performance requirements,and potential sub-6-GHz frequency bands.Then,based on that,we present a comprehensive review of intelligent tunable dynamic antenna systems at sub-6 GHz as key enablers for next-generation smart industrial applications.State-of-the-art smart antenna techniques such as agile pattern reconfigurability using electrical components,machine learning-and artificial intelligence-based agile beam-scanning antennas,and beam-steerable dynamic metasurface antennas are thoroughly reviewed and emphasized.We unfolded the exciting prospects of reconfigurable dynamic antennas for intelligent and reliable connectivity in application scenarios of Industry 4.0 and beyond such as Industrial IoT and smart manufacturing.

Degradation of ^(14)C-glyphosate and aminomethylphosphonic acid (AMPA) in three agricultural soils

Glyphosate （N-phosphonomethyl glycine） is the most used herbicide worldwide. The degradation of ^14C-labeled glyphosate was studied under controlled laboratory conditions in three different agricultural soils： a silt clay loam, a clay loam and a sandy loam soil. The kinetic and intensity of glyphosate degradation varied considerably over time within the same soil and among different types of soil. Our results demonstrated that the mineralization rate of glyphosate was high at the beginning of incubation and then decreased with time until the end of the experiment. The same kinetic was observed for the water extractable residues. The degradation of glyphosate was rapid in the soil with low adsorption capacity （clay loam soil） with a short half-life of 4 days. However, the persistence of glyphosate in high adsorption capacity soils increased, with half-live of 19 days for silt clay loam soil and 14.5 days for sandy loam soil. HPLC analyses showed that the main metabolite of glyphosate, arninomethylphosphonic acid （AMPA） was detected after three days of incubation in the extracts of all three soils. Our results suggested that the possibility of contamination of groundwater by glyphosate was high on a long-term period in soils with high adsorption capacity and low degrading activities and/or acid similar to sandy loam soil. This risk might be faster but less sustainable in soil with low adsorption capacity and high degrading activity like the clay loam soil. However, the release of non-extractable residues may increase the risk of contamination of groundwater regardless of the type of soil.

The preparation and behavior of powder stearin-based methyl ester sulfonates(MES)with the addition of builder as a glidant agent was studied.MES is an anionic surfactant and its performance is equivalent to petroleum-based linear alkylbenzene sulfonates(LAS),the workhorses of the detergent industry.At the same time,zeolites or soda ash were the alternative builders for non-phosphate-based detergent.The behavior of powder MES properties was measured in terms of morphology,particle size,cohesion,caking,and compaction.Before that,these palm stearin-based MES of carbon chain 16–18 with ratios of 98:2,80:20,and 60:40 in flakes were ground using a high shear mixer by 23,000 rpm to produce powder particles.Decreasing the particle size of MES powder can reduce the powder's cohesion,caking,and compaction.The addition of zeolite or soda ash as a glidant in powdered MES can improve the caking behavior.The high stearic in MES greatly influenced getting fine particle powders and required more glidant agents.This powder MES with excellent powder characteristics can perform well as a bio-based cleaning product.

Electric-field induced fluctuations in laser generated plasma plume

The effect of an external electric field on laser-generated plasma has been studied.It is observed that the laser-generated plasma can be used for the ignition of a spark in the presence of a low voltage external electric field.An eight-fold emission intensity enhancement in Cu I spectral lines are measured as compared to the signal intensity in the absence of an external electric field.The plasma parameters remain the same initially,up to a few microseconds after the generation of plasma,and this feature makes it more interesting for the quantitative analysis of any sample using laser induced breakdown spectroscopy(LIBS).In the presence of an external electric field,fluctuations(contraction and expansion)in the laser-generated plasma are observed which increase the plasma decay time and consequently result in enhanced signal intensity.
