Petrographic and Geochemical Characteristics of the Pouni Palaeoproterozoic Formations North of the Léo Square Degree (Burkina Faso, West Africa)

The Pouni area is made up of basalts belonging to the Boromo belt, lamprophyres and granitoids. These geological formations are similar to geological formations of the same type in other regions of the Palaeoproterozoic domain of the Man/Leo shield. This study, which focused on the petrographic and geochemical characteristics of these geological formations, led to the following main conclusions: The lamprophyres are basic plutonic rocks that cut through other geological formations. The basalt belongs to the northern part of the Borormo belt and is thought to be a relic of overthickened oceanic plateaus. There are two groups of granitoid rocks. The granodiorite has a geochemical signature close to that of Archean TTGs and is metaluminous in character. It has a low potassium content. The minor element and rare earth element spectra indicate that it could be derived from partial melting of basic magmatic rocks. Biotite granites are peraluminous and highly potassic. Minor element contents and rare earth spectra indicate that they could be derived from partial melting of felsic materials. Geotectonic diagrams show that the granitoids identified in the Pouni zone were emplaced in an active tectonic context, similar to that of present-day subduction zones.

Antioxidant, Antifungal and Antitermite Activities of Residues from Hydrodistillation of Cymbopogon citratus, Eucalyptus camaldulensis and Mentha piperita

Aromatic plant distillation produces residues rich in phenolic compounds known to be bioactive. In this context, residues from the hydrodistillation of Mentha piperita L., Cymbopogon citratus Stapf, and Eucalyptus camaldulensis Dehnh were chemically and biologically analyzed. The ethanol percentages (70%, 50%, and 30%) were evaluated by determining antioxidant activity using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picryl-hydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging, total phenolic content, and total flavonoid content. Antifungal activity was evaluated “in vitro” against Fusarium oxysporum, Alternaria alternata, Trametes versicolor, and Coniophora puteana using the diffusion method in malt-agar medium. Antitermite activity was also assessed against Reticulitermes flavipes using the most active extract with low ethanol concentrations (50% and 30%). The optimum ethanol concentration to extract phenolic compounds is 70% for TFC and 30% for TPC, and the antioxidant activity was 0.45 ± 0.01 mg/mL (IC50). The most active extracts were the ethanolic ones, particularly for Eucalyptus camaldulensis, presenting 100% inhibition against the mycelial growth of Coniophora puteana and Alternaria alternata at 1 mg/mL and 0.5 mg/mL, respectively. For antitermite activity, EE50 was the most effective, with a 24% termite survival rate and a degraded food supply surface of 28%. These data suggest the potential use of hydrodistillation residues for biopesticide development.

Trauma in Pregnancy at the Yalgado ouedraogo Teaching Hospital in ouagadougou,Burkina Faso:Epidemiological,Clinical,Therapeutic and Prognostic Aspect

Objective: To study the epidemiological, clinical, therapeutic and prognostic aspects of trauma in pregnancy at the Yalgado ouedraogo teaching hospital in ouagadougou. Patients and Methods: A descriptive retrospective study was done over a period of three years from 1st January 2010 to 31st December 2012. We included in our sample, all pregnant women admitted for trauma in pregnancy and eligible in three clinics: obstetrics/gynecology, orthopedics, general and visceral surgery. Anonymity and confidentiality of collected data were respected. Results: We recorded 224 emergency consultations for trauma in pregnancy out of 26,735 obstetric and gynecological consultations which gave a frequency of 0.8%. The mean age of our patients was 25.9 ± 5 years and mean parity was 1. Housewives accounted for 50% of patients and referrals were the mode of admission in 74.6% of cases. The causes of injury were dominated by road traffic accidents in 82.6% of cases, falls in 9.8% and assault in 7.6%. The mean gestational age of onset of trauma was 26.3 ± 7 weeks amenorrhea. The management was multidisciplinary with a medical component in 99.1% of cases, obstetric component in 13% of cases, a visceral surgery component in 6.7% of cases and an orthopedic component in 4.2% case. Multiple traumas were found in 4 patients. The fetal prognosis showed in the 1st trimester 3 cases of abortion in the 2nd trimester 5 cases of intrauterine fetal death and in the 3rd trimester 10 cases of preterm labor. Conclusion: Traumas during pregnancy are beyond emergencies within multiple causes and requiring a multidisciplinary management. Seen the limited means of support, establishment of a national strategy to prevent trauma in pregnancy will improve the prognosis for mother and child.

Iron toxicity is a major stress to rice caused by a high concentration of reduced iron, in the soil in many lowlands worldwide. To reduce iron toxicity in the West African lowlands, an investigation was performed at the site of the University of ouagadougou, in pots containing an iron toxic soil from the Kou Valley (West of Burkina Faso). The experiment objective was to study the effect of mineral fertilizer on Iron Reducing Bacteria (IRB) dynamics and activity during rice cultivation, iron accumulation in rice plant and rice biomass yield under iron toxicity conditions. BouAKE-189 and ROK-5 rice varieties, sensitive and tolerant to iron toxicity, respectively, were used for the experiment. The pots were amended with chemical fertilizers (NPK + Urea and NPK + Urea + Ca + Mg + Zn complex). Control pots without fertilization were prepared similarly. The kinetics of IRB and ferrous iron content in soil near rice roots were monitored throughout the cultural cycle using MPN and colorimetric methods, respectively. The total iron content was evaluated in rice plant using spectrometric method. Data obtained were analyzed in relation to fertilization mode, rice growth stage and rice yield using the student’s t-test and XLSTAT 2014 statistical software. The experiment revealed that NPK + Urea and NPK + Urea + Ca + Mg + Zn fertilization, decreased significantly (p ouAKE-189 rice varieties. In most pots, highest IRB densities and ferrous iron content in soil were recorded from rice tillering and flowering to maturity stages, indicating that rice plants promoted microbial processes and iron reduction in soil. From the study, the NPK + Urea amendment decreased significantly ferrous iron content (p ouAKE-189 and ROK-5 rice varieties roots relatively to control pots. Genetic Diversity of Local Rice Accessions Cultivated in Guinea Based on Agro-Morphological Traits and Identification of Sources of Tolerance to Iron Toxicity

In Guinea, traditional rice varieties are the most widely cultivated in rural areas despite their low yield and high susceptibility to iron toxicity. Moreover, the introduction of new improved varieties tolerant to iron toxicity poses a serious threat to the preservation of the genetic resources of these traditional varieties, whose genetic diversity remains poorly known. The present study therefore aims at a better valorisation of these local rice cultivars through the evaluation of their agromorphological diversity and the identification of genotypes potentially tolerant or resistant to iron toxicity. Thus, 90 accessions collected in the regions of Kindia and Macenta and six controls susceptible or resistant to iron toxicity (AZUCENA, BouAKE 189, CK 73, IR64, NERICAL 19 and AURYLUX 6) were evaluated in three replicate alpha lattice designs in two sites (Sérédou and Kilissi) using 16 agromorphological traits. The results showed significant agromorphological variability of the traditional accessions at both sites for all qualitative and most quantitative traits studied. In addition, 30 local cultivars expressed similar or higher grain yields than the resistant or tolerant controls at both sites, of which 12 were found to be stable at both sites. Of the 12 cultivars identified, five were resistant and seven tolerant to iron toxicity. These 12 accessions could be used in the varietal improvement of lowland rice in Guinea Conakry.

Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), characterized by acute exacerbations and remissions. We report the clinical case of an infant, an 8 months female baby. The time between disease onset and diagnosis of the disease was 6 months. It was from an unknown etiology. The main clinical picture was weight stagnation, mucoid bloody diarrhea, and rectal bleeding. The macroscopic aspect in anorectoscopy was an erythematous mucosa with healthy beaches intervals. The mucosa was bleeding easily on contact. Pathological examination realized within the various lesions of the association was highly suggestive. The suggested treatment was made of symptomatic, corticosteroids and immunosuppressant’s therapy. Conclusion: Ulcerative colitis is rare in infants and difficult to manage in our tropical context.

Two Cases of Hallopeau Type of Pemphigus Vegetans in Two Women in Burkina Faso

Pemphigus of Hallopeau (PH) is a mild and pustular form of pemphigus vegetans, termed initially as “pyodermite végétante” described by Hallopeau. We report cases in two black women. Two women aged 32 and 36 respectively (case 1 and case 2) were seen for a pustulosis associated with blisters and erosions. Their history and their review have found the mouth ulcerations. The clinical examination showed pustules on the cephalic end, the trunk, the limbs and the large folds. Lesions had a polycyclic aspect and spread in a centrifugal way, developing towards budding, squamous and scabby erosions quickly surrounded by new pustules. Regression left a pigmented macula. Histological examination of the skin lesion showed images similar to vulgaris pemphigus (PV), together with hyperacanthosis and papillomatosis. Aspects observed in immunofluorescence were identical to those of PV (case1). General corticoid therapy led to a rapid disappearance of lesions in Case 1 but in Case 2 the Lever protocol combining corticoid and methotrexate have been used. PH is rarely described in our regions. Clinical diagnosis is not obvious for the uninitiated. Beyond the clinical presentation, PH has the same paraclinical diagnosis and the same treatment as PV.

Objective: Conduct a study on cesarean sections in adolescent girls at the mother-child pool of the CHU-T in order to reduce maternal-fetal morbidity and mortality. Patients and Methods: This was a descriptive and cross-sectional study with a retrospective data collection method from January 1st, 2018 to December 31st, 2019. Results: The frequency of caesarean sections in our series was estimated at 59.9% in adolescent girls. 68.7% of adolescent girls were married, the average age was estimated at 18.3 ± 1 years, primiparous women were the most represented group with a rate of 88%. Adolescent girls were housewives in 73.5% of cases, with 37.4% of them living in rural areas. Objectives: to describe the characteristics of newly diagnosed prostate cancer (PCa) and the initial treatments offered to patients in the most important urological center of Burkina Faso. Methods: We analyzed the data of a cohort of 168 consecutive patients with no prior history of PCa between January 2009 and December 2012. Diagnosis of PCa was based on histological analysis of transrectal prostate biopsies. Patient and disease characteristics and the initial treatment offered were taken in account. Results: The mean age at presentation was 68.59 ± 9.41 years (range 30 to 95 years). There was a 3.6-fold increase in the incidence of PCa through the four years of the study. The mean duration of symptoms prior to presentation was 11.6 ± 10.9 months. The majority of cases (86.9%) were presented as locally advanced or metastatic disease. Androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) was the first therapeutic option for 121 patients (72%) and 73 patients (43.4%) underwent ADT through bilateral orchiectomy. Only 3 patients (1.78%) underwent radical prostatectomy. Conclusion: An increase in the diagnosis of PCa in our country was observed in this study. The diagnosis of prostate cancer was usually tardive in Burkina Faso. Treatment often involves surgical ADT for socioeconomic reasons.

This paper reports the case of K.Z, a 15 year-old child received in the Dental Surgery Unit of the Yalgado ouédraogo Teaching Hospital for consultation for some aesthetic reasons due to dental retentions. On his X-ray, the premolars 25, 34, 35, 44, 45 and the molar 47 were deeply impacted, retained by supernumerary teeth. The treatment consisted in the removal of persistent temporary teeth and supernumerary teeth with poor radicular set, except one premolar. The removal of this premolar located between the roots of tooth 36, was source of major risk;therefore, it was put under clinical supervision. After these extractions, a fixed orthodontic appliance enabled bringing impacted teeth to a functional position. Orthodontic treatment lasted 3 years with a monthly check-up. ours results are stable after one year of decline.
