Marine fouling is a worldwide challenge with huge damages on industrial structures,side effects on economics of industries,and environmental and safety-related hazards.Different approaches have been used for combating fouling in the marine environment.Meanwhile,nanocomposite polymer coatings are a novel generation of antifouling coatings with merits of toxin-free chemical composition and ease of large-scale application.Nanomaterials such as nano-metals,nano-metal oxides,metal-organic frameworks,carbon-based nanostructures,MXene,and nanoclays have antibacterial and antifouling properties in the polymer coatings.Besides,these nanomaterials can improve the corrosion resistance,mechanical strength,weathering stability,and thermal resistance of the polymer coatings.Therefore,in this review paper,the antifouling nanocomposite coatings are introduced and antifouling mechanisms are discussed.This review explicitly indicates that the antifouling efficiency of the nanocomposite coatings depends on the properties of the polymer matrix,the inherent properties of the nanomaterials,the weight percent and the dispersion method of the nanomaterials within the coating matrix,and the chemicals used for modifying the surface of the nanomaterials;meanwhile,the hybrids of different nanomaterials and appropriate chemical agents could be used to improve the antifouling behavior of the prepared nanocomposites.Moreover,the theoretical studies are introduced to pave the way of researchers working on theantifouling coatings,and the importance of the theoretical studies and computational modeling along with the experimental research is notified to develop antifouling coatings with high efficiency.

In this study, we investigate the photoluminescence （PL） properties of γ and θ-alumina nanoparticles synthesized by the chemical wet method followed by annealing. The obtained experimental results indicate the presence of some favorable near ultraviolet （NUV）-orange luminescent centers for usage in various luminescence applications, such as oxygen vacancies （F, F＋, F2＋, and F2 centers）, OH related defects, cation interstitial centers, and some new luminescence bands attributed to trapped-hole centers or donor-acceptor centers. The energy states of each defect are discussed in detail. The defects mentioned could alter the electronic structure by producing some energy states in the band gap that result in the optical absorption in the middle ultraviolet （MUV） region. Spectra show that photoionazation of F and F2 centers plays a crucial role in providing either free electrons for the conduction band, or the photoconversions of aggregated oxygen va- cancies into each other, or mobile electrons for electrons-holes recombination process by the Shockley-Read-Hall （SRH） mechanism.

Antimicrobial susceptibility of Helicobacter pylori strains isolated from patients in Shiraz, Southern Iran

AIM: To improve our understanding of Iranian regional variation in Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori ) antibiotic resistance rates to find the best antibiotic therapy for eradication of H. pylori infections.METHODS: A total of 266 patients undergoing endoscopy in Shiraz, Southern Iran, were included in this study. H. pylori strains were isolated from antral biopsies by culture and confirmed by the rapid urease-test and gram staining. Antibiotic susceptibility of H. pylori isolates was determined by E-test.RESULTS: A total of 121 H. pylori strains were isolated, 50 from male and 71 from female patients. Data showed that 44% (n = 53), 20% (n = 24), 5% (n = 6), and 3% (n = 4) of all strains were resistant to the antibiotics metronidazole, amoxicillin, clarithromycin, and tetracycline, respectively. When the antibiotics were considered together we found 11 sensitivity patterns for the strains. Resistance to metronidazole was significantly higher in female than in male patients (P 256 mg/L) which was found in 71% of the isolates is considerable. In the case of amoxicillin, an increased resistance rate of 20% is worrying. Resistance to clarithromycin and tetracycline is also emerging among the H. pylori strains in our region.

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) chronic infection is a worldwide health problem, and numerous efforts have been invested to develop novel vaccines. An efficient vaccine requires broad immune response induction against viral proteins. To achieve this goal, we constructed a DNA vaccine expressing nonstructural 3 (NS3) gene (pcDNA3.1-HCV-NS3) and assessed the immune response in C57BL/6 mice. In this study, the NS3 gene was amplified with a nested-reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) method using sera of HCV-infected patients with genotype 1a. The resulting NS3 gene was subcloned into a pcDNA3.1 eukaryotic expression vector, and gene expression was detected by western blot. The resultant DNA vaccine was co-administered with interleukin-12 (IL-12) as an adjuvant to female C57BL/6 mice. After the final immunizations, lymphocyte proliferation, cytotoxicity, and cytokine levels were assessed to measure immune responses. Our data suggest that co-administration of HCV NS3 DNA vaccine with IL-12 induces production of significant levels of both IL-4 and interferon (IFN)-γ (p<0.05). Cytotoxicity and lymphocyte proliferation responses of vaccinated mice were significantly increased compared to control (p<0.05). Collectively, our results demonstrated that co-administration of HCV NS3 and IL-12 displayed strong immunogenicity in a murine model.

Asphaltenes are complex molecular entities, which together with resins, aromatic hydrocarbons and saturates forms the crude oil. Asphaltenes and resins are in the thermodynamic equilibrium at static reservoir condition. However, asphaltene can precipitate due to changes in thermodynamic condition. Asphaltene deposition in production tubings has been an outstanding problem with wide economic impact on the oil industry. Meanwhile, the use of real-time tools to monitor depositions along the well is of great difficulty. In this work, the asphaltene precipitation region in a single phase flow wellbore is predicted for an oil well of the Iranian oil field. Then, asphaltene deposition thickness along the well is predicted for three time intervals. The simulation results indicated that asphaltene thickness exceeded more than 50% of tubing radius;therefore, a reduction in flow rate, an increase in pressure drop and tubing blockage are expected. Moreover, it is shown the deposits thickness along the wellbore has approximately a skew normal distribution shape, which could be the result of increases in velocity and excess pressure drop.

Study of Hepatitis B Virus Genotypes and Mutation in 1762 &1764 Nucleotides of X Gene in Chronic HBV Patients from Golestan Province—Iran

Introduction: More than 350 million people are chronic carriers of HBV and many of them develop progressive diseases, including cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. Many of those infected develop persistent disease and a proportion goes on to develop liver failure and cancer. Researchers showed that double mutations of the x gene at position 1762 and 1764, have been found in chronic hepatitis B. These mutations were proposed to be associated with fulminant hepatitis B increasing risk of hepatocellular carcinoma. This project aimed to investigate mutation in the x gene region of HBV infected patients in Golestan province, Iran. Method: 100 patients were entered in this study. Hepatitis B viral DNA was extracted from plasma and PCR was performed using specific primers. Direct sequencing and alignment of x gene were applied using reference sequence from Gene Bank database (Okamoto, 1988;Accession number AB033559). Results: Among the chronic HBV patients 51% were male. The results showed that 49% of patients had A1762T, G1764A mutations changing AGG to stop codon TGA. 27% and 24% of cases were showed mutation only in A1762T and G1764A positions respectively. Conclusion: This study was shown presence of X gene mutation in HBV infected people in Golestan province, Iran. The rate of mutation in two positions 1762 and 1764 of HBV genotype D X gene was higher than the average rate of the world (34%).

Organisms causing spontaneous bacterial peritonitis in children with liver disease and ascites in Southern Iran

AIM: To determine the causative agents of spontaneous bacterial peritonitis (SBP) in children with liver disease and ascites in our center.METHODS: During a 2.5 year period, from September 2003 to March 2006, 12 patients with 13 episodes of SBP were studied. In all cases at the time of admission serum albumin and glucose, urinalysis and urine culture was performed. Analysis [white blood cell (WBC) count with differential, albumin, glucose], gram stain, culture by BACTEC method and antibiogram was done on ascitic fluids. Abdominal paracentesis was repeated after 48 h of antibiotic therapy for bacteriologic assay. The patients were followed for at least three months in a gastroenterology clinic. RESULTS: There were 7 girls (58%) and 5 boys (42%) with a median age of 5.2 years (range, 6 mo to 16 years). All cases had positive ascitic fluid culture. Gram stain was positive in 5 (38.5%) of them. The isolated organisms were S. pneumoniae in 5 (38.5%), E. coli in 2 (15.3%), S. viridans in 2 (15.3%), and K. pneumoniae, H. influenza, Enterococci, and nontypable Streptococcus each in one (7.7%). All of them except Enterococci were sensitive to ciprofloxacin and ceftriaxone. All ascitic fluid cultures were negative after 48 h of antibiotic therapy. CONCLUSION: S. pneumoniae is the most common cause of SBP in the pediatric age group and we recom-mend a third generation cephalosporine (e.g., Ceftriax-ione or Cefotaxime) for empirical therapy in children with SBP.
