Practical Method Proposed to Estimate Silting’s Rate in Small and Hillside Dams

The construction of small dams and hillside reservoirs is a common practice for dealing with erratic and unevenly distributed rainfalls in arid and semi arid areas. Moreover, these small hydraulics structures are recommended as a solution to adapt to climate change in rural areas. They are fundamental for the sustainability of the water resources. However, these dams are potential sinks for upstream sediment. Therefore, it would be useful to monitor and measure the amount of sediments in small dams because it is necessary to understand siltation and better functioning of these vital structures. This control and these measurements require the application of the bathymetry or topography surveys which is too expensive for the responsible of these small dams. In this context, this paper proposes a simple and low cost method called: Triangulation of the estimated silted level. This method is based on direct measurement of the accessible silted level in dam. This new method is compared with another method based on the initial Elevation-Capacity curve of dam, usually used when the bathymetry is not attainable. The results of both of them have been verified with those of the bathymetry and electrical tomography methods and validated the proposal method as the most approximate. Therefore, this method is recommended as a new direct and simple technique to evaluate the amount of silting in small dams and hillside reservoirs.

A Rare Tumor in a Rare Location: Ganglioneuroma

Ganglioneuroma is a rare benign tumor Neuronagliomas of the adrenal gland are a rare pathology. Therefore, this case will be of interest to urologists, surgeons, oncologists, and pathologists. Located in the adrenal gland (20%), along the sympathetic chain, and particularly in the posterior mediastinum (40%) and the retroperitoneum (30%). Ganglioneuroma poses a positive diagnostic and therapeutic problem. We report the case of a patient aged 48 admitted for pain in the right hypochondrium. He had no significant past medical or surgical history. On a physical examination, there were no noticeable findings except for mild tenderness and a mass on palpation. He underwent abdominal CT, which showed a relatively homogenous right adrenal tumor measuring. Endocrine work-up including urine catecholamine and cortisol levels was normal. Due to the tumor size and with consideration of the differential diagnosis of a malignant lesion, we elected to operate on the patient. Right adrenalectomy was performed, with no related complications. The final histopathologic report revealed adrenal ganglioneuroma. Although benign, the ganglioneuroma can present malignant aspects, in particular, CT scans and biological that can mislead the clinician, so histology remains the examination of choice for making the diagnosis.

Isli and Tislit: The First Dual Impact Crater Discovered in Morocco

Isli and Tislit, the Moroccan “Romeo and Juliette” according to a popular legend gave their name to a twin lakes in Imilchil. There we show evidences that these two lakes are impact craters. The proof as follow: 1) the fragments of iron meteorites found on both sides of Isli and Tislit lakes belong to the same parent meteorite and siderite type;2) the sedimentary formations which are almost tabular in the area of the lakes become tilted with a centripetal sloping all around and towards Isli lake;3) the circular shape of the Tislit lake is similar to that of the Isli lake;4) the impact breccias found on the south of the Isli lake contain shocked quartz crystals;5) the radial fractures of high pressure affect some sedimentary beds. All these observations give evidence of the presence of an impact crater due to the fall of meteorites.
