Retrospective Analysis of the Correlation between TMD, Headache and Bruxism

Aims: To evaluate the association between bruxism, headaches, and temporomandibular disorder (TMD). Methods: A keyword search of the clinical notes of patients’ charts in AxiUmTM was performed using the search terms “TMD”, “headache”, and “sleep bruxism” to identify these patients. The inclusion criteria were patients with partial of full dentition, aged 18 to 65 years old who attended the UNLV School of Dental Medicine clinics between January 2014 and September 2018. Patients with incomplete records and those who were completely edentulous formed the exclusion criteria. Data were analyzed using the Pearson Correlation Coefficient. Results: The final sample was made up of 529 patients. The highest percentage of study subjects were in the age range of 29 - 34 (17.9%), with a statistically significant correlation to pain on opening (P = 0.0403). Females showed a statistically significant correlation to TMJ clicking (P = 0.0033). Caucasians also had a statistically significant correlation to TMJ clicking (P = 0.0001). In addition, a statistically significant correlation between pain on opening or chewing and headaches was also observed (P = 0.0081). Conclusion: Within the limitations of the present study, Caucasians, and females presented with more TMJ clicking than the other study subjects. Young adults, in particular, experienced more pain on opening or chewing.

Introduction: The aim of this study was to determine whether there was a significant difference in shear bond strength between metal and ceramic brackets when exposed to acidic dietary components (beverages) and to observe the chromogenic potential of each in vitro. Methods: Metal and clear orthodontic brackets were placed on extracted maxillary second premolars and exposed to select beverages three times daily for four weeks. Shade was taken using a colorimeter device at seven intervals and the shear bond strength of each bracket was recorded. Results: There was a variable change in tooth shade with respect to the various beverages in which they were submerged. Coffee and Dr. Pepper had the most pronounced change, whereas Red Bull and water produced little to none, respectively. Compared to controls, brackets submerged in coffee had the greatest reduction in shear bond strength, followed by Dr. Pepper, then Red Bull. Overall, clear brackets showed higher shear bond strength than metal brackets. Conclusion: Acidic dietary components have a negative effect on the shear bond strength of orthodontic brackets, and more pigmented beverages have a higher chromogenic staining potential.

Evaluation of Propolis as Intracanal Medicament against <i>Enterococcus faecalis</i>

The present study aimed to comparatively evaluate Propolis, Calcium hydroxide Ca(OH)2, Chlorhexidine gel 2% (CHX) intracanal medicaments, and a mixture of Propolis with Ca(OH)2 and CHX against Enterococcus faecalis. Material and methods: One hundred and eight single-rooted extracted human teeth were used;all teeth were cut 14 mm away from the apex and prepared until size 25 master apical file. Samples were sterilized and dipped in Brain Heart Infusion Broth (BHI) contaminated with E. faecalis for 21 days at 37°C. Samples removed, divided into six groups, injected with different medicaments as following: group A: Propolis;group B: Ca(OH)2;group C: CHX;group D: Propolis + Ca(OH)2;group E: Propolis + CHX, group F: control group with no medicament, teeth sealed with filling material and nail varnish for three times periods 2, 7 and 10 days. After each time period, samples were opened and irrigated with normal saline. H-file applied to the full length to obtain dentine chips, the files collected into test tubes containing sterile BHI and stored for 48 hours under anaerobic conditions. Samples were then removed and culture in Mueller-Hinton agar, then samples incubated for one week at 37°C after which colony forming units counted using colony counter, statistical analysis was done with ANOVA and post hoc use LSD. Results: Propolis, 2% Chlorhexidine gel, and a mixture of Propolis with Calcium hydroxide were effective against E. faecalis, Calcium hydroxide, and a mixture of Propolis Chlorhexidine was not effective against it. Conclusions: Propolis showed a promising role as an intracanal medicament.

Global warming has attracted much concern about the worldwide organization, civil society groups, researchers, and so forth because the worldwide surface temperature has been expanding. This investigation intends to assess and compare the ability of a combination of land cover indices to predict the future distribution of land surface temperatures in Freetown using the Polynomial model analysis. Landsat satellite images of 1988, 1998, 2000, 2010, and 2018 of the Freetown Metropolitan zone were utilized for analysis. The investigation had adopted two land covers indices, Modification of normalized difference water index and Urban Index (UI) (e.g., MNDWI and UI) and applied a multi regression equation for forecasting the future LST. The stimulation results propose that the development will be accompanied by surface temperature increases, especially in Freetown’s western urban area. The temperature prevailing in the west of the metropolitan area may increase in the city somewhere in the range from 1988 to 2018. Additionally, the results of the LST prediction show that the model is perfect. Our discoveries can be represented as a helpful device for policymakers and community awareness by giving a scientific basis for sustainable urban planning and management.

In this study,a set of coupled multi-media compartments(i.e.,sediment,soil,water and vegetable)was used to assess ecological and health risks from the ingestion of 11 PTEs(Pb,Cd,Cr,As,Hg,Cu,Zn,Ni,Co,Fe,and Mn)and their transportation routes in the water-soil-plant system from the coastal Bhola Island,*** mean concentrations of Cd,Pb,and Co for soil and Cd,Co,and As for sediment were higher than their reference *** contrast,Cd,Pb,and Ni concentrations in water surpassed the acceptable limits set by national and international laws and were considered unsuitable for drinking *** demonstrated high Pb and Cd contents,demonstrating a potential food safety risk to the *** of principal component analysis(PCA)revealed that Cd,Pb,Hg,Cu,Ni and Zn sources were likely to be anthropogenic,especially agro-farming inputs,whereas the Fe,As,Cr,Mn,and Co sources were similar to natural ***,Cd,Pb and Co are the key contaminants in the study area and pose the elevated health and ecological risks in the coastal *** and Pb exhibited higher ecological risks in soils and sediments,as Pb had the highest bio-accessibility(BA;0.02±0.003)and Cd possessed a high bioaccumulation factor(BCF;0.004±0.006).The self-organizing map analysis recognized three spatial patterns which are good agreement with *** average hazard index(HI)values for soil were above the permissible level(HI>1)set by the respective agency;two times higher HI values were noticed for children than adults,suggesting children are highly susceptible to health *** monitoring and source controls for Cd and Pb,along with agro-farming management practices,need to be implemented to reduce the risk of PTE contamination to the aquatic ecosystem and its inhabitants.

Brain Abscess Surgery Outcome: A Comparison between Craniotomy with Membrane Excision versus Burr Hole Aspiration

Introduction: Brain abscess represents 8% of intracranial masses in developing countries. Despite the advances in neuro-imaging, still, the diagnosis of brain abscess is difficult and may need a biopsy in most cases to verify the diagnosis because may even lead to death. CT scan with contrast is a good tool for diagnosing and localizing brain abscesses in late stages, however, it is difficult to diagnose them in the early stages. The development of MRI helps to more accurately diagnose brain abscess. Surgical management of brain abscesses is either medical or surgical through craniotomy or burr holes. Indications of each are still a point of debate among most neurosurgeons. Methodology: This is a descriptive longitudinal prospective study to compare the outcomes of two surgical procedures used in The National Centre for Neurological Sciences-Khartoum-Sudan (NCNS) from 2012 to 2015, craniotomy and excision of the abscess membrane versus burr hole and aspiration of brain abscess in terms of duration of hospitalization, length of antibiotic use, recurrence rate, number of images needed for follow-up, and the final postoperative early and late outcomes. The data was collected through a designed questionnaire and was then analyzed using SPSS version 20. No significant ethical approval was required for this study. Results: Fifty-four patients were operated on through craniotomy (29/54) and burr hole (25/54). Their ages ranged from 1 year to 53 years with an average presentation at 13 years of age. Most patients presented with fever (23.1%), convulsions (16%), vomiting (16.7%) and headache (15.4%). The mean of illness for both groups was almost 2 months. The majority of patients in this study were having no risk factors (38.9%) while the major risk factors seen were cardiac diseases (14.8%), neurosurgical procedures (13%) and otitis media (11.1%). The aim of the present study was to assess the dietary habits and oral hygiene practice of dental students in a new dental school. A self-administered structured closed-ended questionnaire on demographic characteristics, medical history, oral hygiene and dietary habits was distributed to dental students. Results showed that One third of students indicated that they don’t consume low pH beverages (soft drinks) at all, while 48.9% drink a soft drink or two a day. Students took varying amount of time to consume their drinks. The majority of participants consumed citric juices, fruits and/or pickles at least once a day. 91.3% of students use either soft (41.8%) or medium (49.5%) toothbrush. Only a fifth (16.9%) of the students brush their teeth after drinking soft drinks and 58.2% brush their teeth after vomiting. In conclusion, young adults need to be aware about their dietary habits & oral hygiene, and also a proper dental health program needs to be applied.

Associations between Vitamin D and Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: The Role of Vitamin D Receptor and Binding Protein

Background: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a chronic disease that is characterized by β-cell dysfunction and resistance for insulin. Vitamin D is necessary for insulin secretion so it is a crucial factor in the development of T2DM. This study was done to investigate the association between serum 25-hydroxy Vitamin D [25(OH)3D], VDR (Vitamin D receptor) and VDBP (Vitamin D binding protein) with type 2 diabetic patients compared to control subjects. Subjects and Methods: This study carried out 110 female patients who were previously diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and 110 age, sex and weight matched as controls. All participants were subjected to full history taking, clinical examination and assessment of fasting blood glucose, HbA1c , lipid profile, 25-hydroxy Vitamin D [25(OH)3D], VDR and VDBP. Results: Results showed that the level of 25(OH)3D was significantly lower in diabetic group compared to controls and was significantly negatively correlated with glycated hemoglobin, serum total cholesterol and low density lipoprotein cholesterol in type 2 DM. Decreasing Vitamin D level was significantly associated with decreasing VDR. No significant association was found between Vit D and VDBP levels. Conclusions: Vitamin D deficiency is frequent in diabetic patients and associated with poor control and outcome. This suggests a role of Vitamin D in the pathogenesis and control of T2DM. Serum VDBP in diabetes may be independent to the level of 25(OH)3D and needs further studies.
