Effects of feeding whole linseed on ruminal fatty acid composition and microbial population in goats

The objective of the present study was to evaluate the effect of feeding different levels of whole linseed,as a source of n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids(PUFA), on ruminal fatty acid composition and microbial population in the goat. Twenty-four crossbred Boer goats were assigned to 3 dietary treatments: LO(control), L10 and L20 containing 0,10%, or 20% whole linseed, respectively. The ruminal pH and concentration of total volatile fatty acids(VFA) were not affected by dietary treatments. The feeding of L10 and L20 diets produced higher(P < 0.05) molar proportions of acetate and lower(P < 0.05) molar proportions of butyrate and valerate than the LO diet. Molar proportions of myristic acid(C14:0) and palmitic acid(C16:0) were lower(P < 0.05) in the rumen of goats offered L10 and L20 diets than the control diet. However, stearic acid(C18:0), vaccenic acid(C18:1 trans-11), conjugated linoleic acid(CLA,C18:2 trans-10, cis-12) and a-lenolenic acid(C18:3 n-3) were higher(P < 0.05) in the rumen of goats fed L10 and L20 than L0. Both inclusion levels of linseed in the diet(L10 and L20) reduced the ruminal total bacteria, methanogens, and protozoa compared with LO(P < 0.05). The effect of the dietary treatments on cellulolytic bacteria, varied between the individual species. Both inclusion levels of linseed resulted in a significant decrease(P < 0.05) in the population of Fibrobacter succinogenes, and Rumunococus flavefaciens compared with LO, with no significant difference between the groups fed linseed diets. The population of Rumunococus albus was not affected by the different dietary treatments. It was concluded that inclusion of whole linseed in the diet of goats could increase the concentration of PUFA in the rumen, and decrease the population of F. succinogenes, R. flavefaciens, methanogens and protozoa in rumen liquid of goats.

Effect of Dietary Components on the Shear Bond Strength of Orthodontics Brackets after Thermal Aging

Introduction: The stability of orthodontic brackets throughout orthodontic treatment plays a critical role in the treatment’s effectiveness. The present in vitro study was designed to assess the impact of various dietary components on the performance of orthodontic brackets. Methods: Metal orthodontic brackets were bonded to 66 extracted anterior teeth divided into groups based on the solution type: Milk, Gatorade, Cold Coffee, and a control group using water. Each group consisted of 20 teeth except for the control group, which included six teeth. The bracketed teeth were submerged in their respective solutions for 15 minutes three times daily at different intervals to mimic an in vivo environment and were stored in artificial saliva at room temperature (23?C). The specimens underwent artificial aging through 10,000 cycles of thermocycling (representing one clinical year) between 5?C and 55?C. Shade measurements were taken using a VITA Easy Shade device, capturing the classic shade and L*, a*, and b* values. Delta E values were calculated immediately post-bonding and after 7 days, 1 month, 1, and 2 clinical years. The shear bond strength of each bracket was measured using an ultra-tester machine. Results: After two clinical years, significant differences in ΔE color values were observed across all groups, with the most substantial change noted in teeth immersed in cold coffee. Brackets submerged in milk demonstrated lower shear bond strength than other solutions, whereas the control group exhibited the highest shear bond strength (P = 0.01). Conclusion: The study indicates that dietary components significantly influence tooth color stability and the shear bond strength of orthodontic brackets, underscoring the importance of considering these factors in orthodontic treatment planning.

Hepcidin-orchestrated Hemogram and Iron Homeostatic Patterns in Two Models of Subchronic Hepatic injury

Objective This study was designed to evaluate hematological disorders and the orchestrating roles of hepcidin and IL-6 in rat models of thioacetamide(TAA) and carbon tetrachloride(CCl_4) hepatotoxicity. Methods Rats were intraperitoneally injected with TAA(10 mg/100 g rat weight dissolved in isosaline) or CCl_4(100 μL/100 g rat weight diluted as 1:4 in corn oil) twice weekly for eight consecutive weeks to induce subchronic liver fibrosis. Blood and tissue samples were collected and analyzed. Results CCl_4 but not TAA significantly decreased the RBCs, Hb, PCV, and MCV values with minimal alterations in other erythrocytic indices. Both hepatotoxins showed leukocytosis, granulocytosis, and thrombocytopenia. By the end of the experiment, the erythropoietin level increased in the CCl_4 model. The serum iron, UIBC, TIBC, transferrin saturation%, and serum transferrin concentration values significantly decreased, whereas that of ferritin increased in the CCl_4 model. TAA increased the iron parameters toward iron overload. RT-PCR analysis revealed increased expression of hepatic hepcidin and IL-6 m RNAs in the CCl_4 model and suppressed hepcidin expression without significant effect on IL-6 in the TAA model. Conclusion These data suggest differences driven by hepcidin and IL-6 expression between CCl_4 and TAA liver fibrosis models and are of clinical importance for diagnosis and therapeutics of liver diseases.

Factors Affecting Medication Non Adherence in Type 2 Sudanese Diabetic Patients

Background: Medications non-adherence is responsible for treatment failure and a reason of higher cost of medical care. It had been proved that, in general, diabetic patients are non-adherent to their treatment and only a small number of them were found to be adhering with all aspects of diabetic care. Objectives: To assess and evaluate the most common factors associated with medications adherence among Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (DM) patients attending Ribat University Hospital Diabetic Clinic (RUHDC) Khartoum state, Sudan. Methods: Single Centre Descriptive cross sectional hospital based study was carried out among 351 patients using structured questionnaire and patients cards. Results: A total of 351 patients were recruited in the study;65.8% were females. About 64.4% were on oral medications and 35.6% on insulin. Adherence to medications among total Type 2 DM patients was 45%. Main barriers to medication adherence were drugs unavailability (34.3%) and forgetfulness (30.7%). Medications knowledge was 41.2% for patients on oral medications and 38.4% for insulin users. Conclusion: Adherence to anti-diabetic drugs in this study was found to be sub-optimal but considered reasonable in comparison with that reported by many African countries. Poor medications knowledge, drug brand unavailability and forgetfulness were the main reasons for medications non adherence. Family support, improving healthcare system and changing patents’ behavior will be needed to improve medications adherence.

Addition of Insulin to Treatment Regimen in Type 2 Diabetes: The Significance of Age and Duration among Sudanese Diabetic Patients

Background: Type 2 diabetes is a progressive disease and as the result of patient’s age and diabetes duration, β-cell ability for insulin secretion deteriorates continually and finally fails to meet body requirement. Intensification of treatment drug regimen including addition of insulin is critical to maintain glycemic target and reduce developing of long-term complications. Objective: The main purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of diabetes duration and patients’ age on addition of insulin to treatment regimen. Methods: A single centre, cross-sectional hospital-based study was done among 351 diabetes Mellitus (DM) patients visiting Ribat University Hospital Diabetic Clinic, Khartoum State, Sudan. Data was collected using constructed, validated and multiple-choice questionnaire. Results: From 351 patients enrolled in the study, female were 65.8% and male 34.2%. About 64.4% were on oral anti-diabetic;35.6% on insulin;about 31.6% shifted to insulin when their ages above 40 years;and 22.8% when diabetes duration was above 5 years. Co-morbidity was 54.4% and 60.2% of patients had hypertension. Conclusion: Interactions between age and longer duration of diabetes were mostly significant reasons for transferring patients to insulin. Percent of insulin users and co-morbidity was within international range.

Assessing Knowledge of Hypoglycemia Symptoms among Type 2 Diabetic Patients Using Insulin, Khartoum, Sudan

Background: Hypoglycemia is a traumatic dilemma that has a critical impact on not only the patient’s quality of life but also their families and communities. Improving Patient’s awareness and knowledge regarding hypoglycemia symptoms is crucial to avoid serious implications like loss of consciousness and even death. Objective: This study aimed to assess patients’ knowledge of hypoglycemia symptoms and source of diabetes information among insulin users type 2 diabetes. Methods: A single centre, hospital-based, analytical, and cross-sectional study was carried out among diabetic patients using insulin attended to Ribat University Hospital Diabetes Clinic (RUHDC), Khartoum State, Sudan during a period of study. A validated questionnaire was used to obtain socio-demographic characteristics of respondents and the patients’ knowledge regarding hypoglycemia symptoms was assessed whether good, medium or poor. Data were analyzed, using (SPSS). Descriptive (frequencies) and inferential statistics (association used chi-square) were used at a level of confidence p ≤ 0.05. Results: A majority of patients (52%) had poor knowledge of hypoglycemia symptoms and the common symptoms known to patients were hands tremor (67.2%), blurred vision (52.8%) and sweating (65.6%). No associations were found among hypoglycemia symptoms knowledge, socio-demographic and diabetes duration. Only (25.6%) had regular visiting to educating center and physicians were the major source of diabetes knowledge (74.4%). Conclusion: This study proved low patients hypoglycemia symptoms knowledge and physician were the main sources of information about diabetes at RUHDC. Further ideas are required in collaboration and integrated approach to filling the gap of patients’ awareness and multidisciplinary team in diabetes management.

Seismic stress perturbation and triggering patterns induced by the 2016 Central Italy earthquake sequences

Numerous shallow earthquakes, including 24 th August Amatrice, 26 th October Visso, and 30 th October Norcia earthquakes, ruptured the segments of Mount Vettore-Gorzano fault system in the central Apennines(Italy) in 2016. In order to investigate the stress perturbation and triggering patterns among the earthquake sequences, we introduce a more realistic nonplanar coseismic fault geometry model, which improve the rupture model by assimilating relocated aftershocks and the GPS observations. We adopt the seismic slip inversion program of the steepest descent method(SDM) to create the detailed coseismic rupture models and optimize Coulomb Failure Stress model by varying the coefficient of friction and received fault parameters. The results indicate that the nonplanar fault geometry model is more reflective of the deep slip of the coseismic rupture than planar model. As evidenced by the coseismic Coulomb stress changes caused by the three mainshocks at different depth slices, the stress loading mainly distributes on the active fault zones and the stress changes can well explain the spatial distribution of aftershocks. The first large Amatrice mainshock accelerates the occurrence of the Mw 5.9 Visso and Mw 6.6 Norcia earthquakes, with the positive stress changes at the hypocenter exceeding the stress triggering threshold(0.010×10^(6) Pa) and up to 0.015×10^(6) and 0.257×10^(6) Pa, respectively. Furthermore, the Mw 5.9 Visso earthquake as well encourages the occurrence of the Mw 6.6 Norcia event with the increased stress changes of 0.052×10^(6) Pa on the hypocenter. It is concluded that the stress transfer and accumulation play crucial roles on the linkage triggering mechanism among the mainshock-mainshock and mainshockaftershocks. Noteworthily, the cumulative stress changes on the southwest segment of the Norcia Fault(NF), the southeast parts of the Montereale Fault System(MFS) and Mount Gorzano Fault(MGF) of the main regions are up to(1.5~3.5) ×10^(6) Pa.
