Facies development and sedimentology of the Middle Miocene carbonates of the Raghama Formation, northeastern Saudi Arabia

Ragahama Formation comprises a siliciclastic continental deposits followed by marine carbonates, representing prograding alluvial fans from adjacent high hinterlands seaward into lagoons and fringing reef environments. The present work aimed to document the facies development and sedimentology of the Raghama carbonates exposed along the eastern coastal plain of the Red Sea, northwestern Saudi Arabia. Four stratigraphic sections were measured and sampled(D1–D4) and thin sections and major and trace element analyses were prepared and applied for petrographic and geochemical approaches. The carbonates were subdivided into three successive fore-reef, reef-core, and back-reef depositional facies. Sandy stromatolitic boundstone, microbial laminites, dolomitic ooidal grainstone, bioclastic coralline algal wackestone, sandy bioclastic wackestone, and coral boundstones were the reported microfacies types. Petrographic analysis reveals that the studied carbonates were affected by dissolution, dolomitization, and aggrading recrystallization, which affects both the original micrite matrix and grains or acts as fracture and veinlet filling leading to widespread vuggy and moldic porosity. No evidence of physical compaction, suggesting rapid lithification and recrystallization during early diagenesis and prior to substantial burial and intensive flushing by meteoric waters. Most of the original microstructure of corals were leached and destructed. This is indicated by the higher depletion in Sr and Ca levels and increase in Mg,Na, Fe, and Mn levels, especially in section D1, in comparison with the worldwide carbonates.

Bryozoan Nodules as a Frame-Builder of BryozoanMicroreef, Middle Miocene Sediments, Egypt

Bryozoan nodules, coralline algae, scleractinian corals and oysters form an important organic buildup, 1.2-4.5 m thick in the Langhian-Serravaliann sediments of Egypt. Based on type, shape and size of the substrate, bryozoan nodules take tree-like and globular morphologies. Tree-like speci- mens reach 10 cm in maximum height and 3 cm in diameter, while Globular ones attain 9 cm in maxi- mum diameter. Most tree-like nodules are perforated with wide or narrow pores, few are non-perforated. Globulars and few tree-like forms are with mamelon-like structures. Perforations on the outer surfaces may indicate a symbiotic relationship between bryozoans and a live plant substrate. Nod- ules from Homiera and Gharra areas of the Cairo-Suez District with wider perforations may indicate growth in slightly lighter or turbid areas of the continental shelf than those of North Western Desert of narrower perforations. Non-perforated nodules may assume an incrustation on ephemeral substrate .

Paleoecology of Benthic Foraminifera in Coral Reefs Recorded in the Jurassic Tuwaiq Mountain Formation of the Khashm Al-Qaddiyah Area, Central Saudi Arabia

Thirty three benthic foraminiferal species belong to 23 genera and 16 families have been recorded from the coral reefs of the Callovian Tuwaiq Formation, Khashm AI-Qaddiyah area, Central Saudi Arabia. Three species： Astacolus qaddiyahensis, Nodosaria riyadhensis, Siderolites jurassica are believed to be new. Nearly all identified foraminifera are of Atlantie-Miditeranean affinity. The foraminiferal assemblage recorded in the present work is mixed of open marine, moderately deep marine conditions associations and shallow to deep lagoon. The reefal part of upper Twiaq Formation may have been deposited in shallow water of lower to middle shelf depth （20-50 m） as indicated by abundant corals and benthic foraminifera. The coral fauna and bearing benthic foraminifera indicated moderate water energy.

Facies Analysis and Biostratigraphy of the Miocene Sequence,Cairo-Suez District,Egypt

Miocene siliciclastic-carbonate deposits are widely exposed in Cairo-Suez District, Egypt. These deposits are underlain and overlain by continental sediments of Oligocene and post Miocene, respectively. Three stratigraphic sections were investigated at Gabals Geneife, Homeira and Gharra. Lithostrtigraphically, the Miocene sequence could be differentiated into two main rock units representing shallow deposits with relatively intermittent deep marine incursions. These are from base to top, Gharra Formation and Genefe Formation. Detailed macrofossils investigations led to the recognition of four macrofossil zones, namely Alectryonella plicatula-Crassostrea frondosa Range Zone, Echinolampas amplus-Scutella ammonis Range Zone, Chlamys（Macrochlamys） sardoa-Chlamys（Argopecten） submalvinae Range Zone, and Chlamys gentoni-Pecten（Oppenheimopecten） benedictus-Pecten（P.） ziziniae Assemblage Zone. Microfacies analysis and identified taxa indicated that the Miocene sequence was deposited in transgressive-regressive cycles ranged from near shore, warm shallow inner to middle shelf marine environments with storm influence during the accumulation of the oyster banks.

Nuclear β-catenin expression as a prognostic factor in advanced colorectal carcinoma

AIM： To investigate the changing pattern of β-catenin expression and its prognostic value in advanced colorectal cancer （CRC）. METHODS： Archival tumor samples were analyzed for β-catenin using immunohistochemistry （IHC） in 95 patients with advanced CRC. RESULTS： Membranous β-catenin expression was found in the normal colorectal epithelium. Almost 100% of CRC cases showed membranous and cytoplasmic expression, and 55 （58%） cases showed nuclear expression. In univariate （Kaplan-Meier） survival analysis, only the nuclear index （NI） was a significant predictor of disease free survival （DFS）（P = 0.023; n = 35）, with a NI above the median associated with longer DFS （34.2 too） than those with a NI below the median （15.5 too）（P = 0.045, ANOVA）. The other indices were not significant predictors of DFS, and none of the three tested indices （for membranous, cytoplasmic, or nuclear expression） predicted diseasespecific survival （DSS）. However, when dichotomized as positive or negative nuclear expression, the former was a significant predictor of more favorable DFS （P = 0.041） and DSS （P = 0.046）. CONCLUSION： Nuclear β-catenin expression provides additional information in predicting patient outcome in advanced CRC.

Up-regulation of α-catenin is associated with increased lymph node involvement in colorectal cancer

AIM: To investigate the changing pattern of α-catenin expression and its relationship to clinical and pathological features of colorectal cancer (CRC) patients. METHODS: Archival tumor samples were analyzed using immunohistochemistry (IHC) for α-catenin in 91 patients with advanced CRC. RESULTS: The values of α-catenin membrane index (MI) and cytoplasmic index (CI) were significantly related to the depth of tumor invasion (P = 0.027, P = 0.020, respectively), high indices being associated with increased depth of the primary tumor invasion (T3 and T4). Similarly, patients with high α-catenin expression had a signifi cantly increased risk of lymph node metastasis (32/39 vs 37/52 for MI and 37/45 vs 32/46 for CI) (P = 0.001, P = 0.0001, respectively, for LNN status). An altered expression (i.e., cytoplasmic pattern) was also related (P = 0.047) to the response to chemotherapy; patients with low CI were more responsive (CR: 7/46) than patients with high CI values (CR: 0/45). There was a marginal effect on survival in patients time with metastases (SWM) (P = 0.087); patients with low CI showing slightly longerSWM, but no such effect on disease free survival (DFS) or disease specifi c survival (DSS). As to co-expression with another member of the adhesion complex (β-catenin), high α-catenin/β-catenin MI index was of marginal signifi cance in predicting longer DSS (P = 0.063, log-rank). CONCLUSION: The results implicate that high α-catenin expression is intimately involved in the key regulatory mechanisms leading to invasive phenotype, lymph node metastases, and progressive disease in CRC.

Insects are well recognized as a source of potentially useful compounds for modern medicine. Development of anticancer drugs from natural resources has been performed throughout the world. In the present study, anticancer activity of the hemolymph and fat body of Sarcophaga argyrostoma third larval instars is assayed against human breast cancer cell line (MDA-MB-231 cells). The cytotoxicity of the hemolymph and fat body samples were determined. The results showed that growth of MDA-MB-231 cells was inhibited at different concentrations upon 24 h of exposure. There is no inhibitory activity against Vero cells under these experimental conditions. Protein profile of the hemolymph and fat body were extracted and separated using sodium dodecyl sulphate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE). Protein analysis showed differences in number of electrophoretic protein bands with different molecular weights between treated and control larvae. The present work assumes that hemolymph and fat body tissue have cytotoxicity against MDA-MB-231 cells and these results exhibit that larvae from S. argyrostoma could be used as a good source for developing anti-cancer agents and knowledge of these anti-cancer compounds will lead to better control of human disease.

AIM:To correlate cyclooxygenase-2(COX-2)expression profile with clinical and pathological variables to assess their prognostic/predictive value in colorectal carcinoma(CRC).METHODS:Archival tumor samples were analyzed using immunohistochemistry for COX-2 expression in 94 patients with *** were diagnosed and treatedat the Departments of Surgery and Oncology,King Abdulaziz University Hospital,Saudi ***:Fifty-six percent of the tumors showed positive cytoplasmic COX-2 expression,whereas 44%of cases were completely *** were no significant correlations between COX-2 expression and sex,age,grade or tumor ***,COX-2 expression revealed a significant correlation with tumor stage(P=0.01)and distant metastasis(P=0.02),and a borderline association with lymph node involvement(P =0.07).Tumors with high COX-2 expression showed a higher recurrence rate than tumors with no expression(Pels,COX-2 did not appear among the independent predictors of disease-free survival or disease-specific ***:COX-2 expression seems to provide useful prognostic information in CRC,while predicting the patients at high risk for recurrent disease.

A Correlation between Histochemical Patterns of Connective Tissue Fibers and AgNORs in Breast Lesions

Background: The precise histopathologic diagnosis of a breast lesion is the first step towards the most appropriate inclusive patient’s management. The aim of this study was to evaluate the correlation between histochemical patterns of connective tissue fibers and NORs in breast lesions. Methodology: Patients with breast cancer (n = 25) were ascertained as the case group, and those with benign breast lesions were ascertained as a control group (n = 25). Histochemical evaluations of elastic fibers, reticular fibers and mean AgNORs count were performed for all study subjects. Results: elastic fibers intensity was brought into being lessening in benign lesions and upturns in the direction of malignant lesions. The intensity of elastic fibers was found to intensify with rises of neoplastic changes in breast cancer and this was found to be statistically significant P Conclusion: Demonstration of connective tissue fibers (particularly elastic fibers) can strength the diagnostic evidence for conventional histopathology diagnosis. Mean AgNORs count can merge as an important quantitative marker in breast cancer diagnosis.

The Generation of electric Load Profiles in the UK Domestic Buildings through Statistical Predictions

Various forecasting tools exist for planners of national networks that are based on historical data. These are used to make decisions at the national level to meet a countries commitment to CO2 emission targets. However, at a local community level, the guidance is not easily understood by planners. This work presents for the first time a methodology for the generation of realistic domestic electricity load profiles for different types of UK households for small communities. The work is based on a limited set of data, and has been compared with measurement. Daily load profiles from individual dwelling to community can be predicted using this method. Results have been presented, and discussed.
