Portal vein thrombosis and arterioportal shunts:Effects on tumor response after chemoembolization of hepatocellular carcinoma

AIm: To evaluate the effect of portal vein thrombosis and arterioportal shunts on local tumor response in advanced cases of unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma treated by transarterial chemoembolization. mETHODS: A retrospective study included 39 patients (mean age: 66.4 years, range: 45-79 years, SD: 7) with unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) who were treated with repetitive transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) in the period between march 2006 and October 2009. The effect of portal vein thrombosis (PVT) (in 19 out of 39 patients), the presence of arterioportal shunt (APS) (in 7 out of 39), the underlying liver pathology,Child-Pugh score, initial tumor volume, number of tumors and tumor margin definition on imaging were correlated with the local tumor response after TACE. The initial and end therapy local tumor responses were evaluated according to the response evaluation criteria in solid tumors (RECIST) and magnetic resonance imaging volumetric measurements. RESULTS: The treatment protocols were well tolerated by all patients with no major complications. Local tumor response for all patients according to RECIST criteria were partial response in one patient (2.6%), stable disease in 34 patients (87.1%), and progressive disease in 4 patients (10.2%). The mR volumetric measurements showed that the PVT, APS, underlying liver pathology and tumor margin definition were statistically significant prognostic factors for the local tumor response (P = 0.018, P = 0.008, P = 0.034 and P = 0.001, respectively). The overall 6-, 12- and 18-mo survival rates from the initial TACE were 79.5%, 37.5% and 21%, respectively. CONCLUSION: TACE may be exploited safely for palliative tumor control in patients with advanced unresectable HCC; however, tumor response is significantly affected by the presence or absence of PVT and APS.

Removal of Dyes in Aqueous media with Hydrochar Base of Solid Tanneries Waste: Optimization Process and Application

The Response Surface methodology (RSm) was used to optimise the conditions of preparation of activated hydrochar from tannery solid waste by hydrothermal carbonisation (HTC). The main factors such as residence time, moisture content and final carbonisation temperature were investigated during the optimisation of hydrochar preparation conditions. The three responses investigated are hydrochar yield, iodine and methylene blue indices. The results of experimental analyses showed that the yield of hydrochar decreases with increasing final temperature, leading to the formation of micropores inside the carbonaceous solid. The optimum conditions for preparing the following hydrochar were obtained: 83.10%, 390.44 mg∙g−1 and 259.63 mg∙g−1 respectively for the hydrochar yield, the iodine and methylene blue indices. The specific surface area of prepared hydrochar is 849.160 m2/g, SEm micrographs showed a porous heterogeneous surface and particularly, the hydrochar surface also revealed external pores on the hydrochar surface which acted as a pathway to the micropores. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), however, showed a predominance of acid functions on the surface of the carbonaceous solids. Tests were carried out to eliminate indigo carmine in aqueous media. Activated hydrochar showed a high level of activity, with the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms giving an adsorption quantity of 354.610 mol/g and a KF constant of 468.2489, respectively. The findings of the research revealed that hydrochar produced is well adapted for dyes removal.

How believable are published laboratory data?A deeper look into system-compliance and elastic modulus

Elastic modulus(E)interpretation is debatable with limited literature detailing the impact of *** address this impact,a comprehensive testing schedule using an aluminium 6061(Al)sample is carried out on several systems under various test *** is chosen as it is extruded and adheres to well defined shape tolerances and elastic properties.A robust method,using the Savitzky-Golay filter,is introduced to identify significant slope changes in the stressestrain *** the load in the test system is well defined,the recorded deformation is corrected to the expected value of Al resulting in a system-compliance *** results across the testing systems and test setups showed significant variance,with the recorded E always lower than the anticipated *** number of components within the system over which the deformation is measured had the most significant impact,lowering the expected E by up to 50%.Additionally,the system-compliance factor is inconsistent across different systems and ***,it is evidently proved that each setup must be separately evaluated for its system-compliance and that no single value exists across systems and *** findings are then projected onto a series of uniaxial compressive strength(UCS)tests carried out on Stanstead granite(SS GR)*** corrected Et50 and Eavg values for system-compliance of the samples are within1%for each system as opposed to being50%*** findings conclude that it is deemed necessary and of utmost importance that the deformation be corrected to accommodate the systemcompliance to obtain reliable results.

Poor rich demarcation of matthew effect on scale-free systems and its application

In a scale-free network, only a minority of nodes are connected very often, while the majority of nodes are connected rarely. However, what is the ratio of minority nodes to majority nodes resulting from the matthew effect？ In this paper, based on a simple preferential random model, the poor-rich demarcation points are found to vary in a limited range, and form a poor-rich demarcation interval that approximates to k/m E [3,4]. As a result, the （cumulative） degree distribution of a scale-free network can be divided into three intervals： the poor interval, the demarcation interval and the rich interval. The inequality of the degree distribution in each interval is measured. Finally, the matthew effect is applied to the ABC analysis of project management.

A Hybrid model for Reliability Aware and Energy-Efficiency in multicore Systems

Recently,multicore systems use Dynamic Voltage/Frequency Scaling(DV/FS)technology to allow the cores to operate with various voltage and/or frequencies than other cores to save power and enhance the *** this paper,an effective and reliable hybridmodel to reduce the energy and makespan in multicore systems is *** proposed hybrid model enhances and integrates the greedy approach with dynamic programming to achieve optimal Voltage/Frequency(Vmin/F)***,the allocation process is applied based on the *** hybrid model consists of three *** first stage gets the optimum safe voltage while the second stage sets the level of energy efficiency,and finally,the third is the allocation *** results on various benchmarks show that the proposed model can generate optimal solutions to save energy while minimizing the makespan *** with other competitive algorithms show that the proposed model provides on average 48%improvements in energy-saving and achieves an 18%reduction in computation time while ensuring a high degree of system reliability.

The present investigation deals with the positron behaviour in Alxlnl_xSb ternary semiconductor alloys in the zinc-blende phase. The calculations are mainly based on a pseudopotential approach coupled with the independent particle model. Features such as elastic constants, electron and positron chemical potentials, positron deformation potential and positron diffusion constant are determined. moreover, the positron affinity to InSb, A1Sb and their related ternary alloys and heterostructures is calculated. The present results are compared to experiment and found to be in reasonably good agreement. The information gathered from the present study can help in understanding the positron trapping at interfaces and precipitates and might be useful in slow-positron-beam experiments.

In this research,a promising class of insensitive and high-energy dense biopolymers,which contain nitrogen-rich 1H-tetrazol-1-yl acetate and nitrate ester functional groups,was successfully synthesized through tetrazole derivatization and nitration of cellulose and its micro-sized derivative(TNCN and TCmCN).Their molecular structures,physicochemical properties,thermal behaviors,mechanical sensitivities and detonation performances were studied and compared to those of the corresponding nitrocellulose and nitrated micro-sized cellulose(NCN and CmCN).The developed energetic TNCN and TCmCN exhibited insensitive character with excellent features such as density of 1.710 g/cm3and 1.726 g/cm3,nitrogen content of 20.95%and 22.59%,and detonation velocity of 7552 m/s and 7786 m/s,respectively,and thereby demonstrate their potential applications as new generation of energetic biopolymers to substitute the common ***,thermal results showed that the designed nitrated and chemical modified cellulosic biopolymers displayed good thermal stability with multistep decomposition *** results enrich future prospects for the design of promising insensitive and high-energy dense cellulose-rich materials and commence a new chapter in this field.

Development of a bioheat model for older people under hot and cold exposures

Physiological modeling is important to evaluate the effects of heat and cold conditions on people’s thermal comfort and health. Experimental studies have found that older people (above 65 year old) undergo age-related weakening changes in their physiology and thermoregulatory activities, which makes them more vulnerable to heat or cold exposure than average aged young adults. However, addressing the age-related changes by modeling has been challenging due to their wide variability among the older population. This study develops a two-node physiological model to predict the thermal response of older people. The model is built on a newly developed two-node model for average-age young adults by accounting for the age-related attenuation of thermoregulation and sensory delays in triggering thermoregulatory actions. A numerical optimization method is developed to compute the model parameter values based on selected benchmark data from the literature. The proposed model is further validated with published measurement data covering large input ranges. The model predictions are in good agreement with the measurements in hot and cold exposure conditions with a discrepancy 0.60 °C for the mean skin temperature and of 0.30 °C for the core temperature. The proposed model can be integrated into building simulation tools to predict heat and cold stress levels and the associated thermal comfort for older people in built environments.
