Ba0.5CaxSr0.5-xTiO3 (BCST) ceramics, wh.re x = 0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3 and 0.4, were prepared by th. conventional solid state reaction tech.ique. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis confirmed th. formation of BST perovskite ph.se structure besides some calcium oxide peaks for samples with.h.gh.Ca content, x. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) results confirmed th. XRD results, i.e., as x increased, th. average grain size decreased. Energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis verified th. increase of th. amount of Ca element with.increasing of its content. Mech.nical properties such.as ultrasonic attenuation, longitudinal wave velocity, and longitudinal elastic modulus were studied by an ultrasonic pulse ech. tech.ique at 2 Mh. frequency. Investigations of ceramic microstructures and mech.nical properties sh.wed th.ir dependence on composition. Increasing of Ca content resulted in a decrease in bulk density and ultrasonic attenuation and an increase in porosity, velocity, and modulus. h.gh.temperature ultrasonic studies sh.wed, in addition to Curie ph.se transition, th.ee or more relaxation peaks and its origin was investigated.

Th. effect of Mn_(3)O_(4)addition on microh.rdness,microstructure and electrical properties of vanadium oxide doped zinc oxide varistor ceramics is systematically *** Vicker’s microh.rdness h. h.s decreased with.increasing th. amount of ***,th. average grain size h.s decreased from 27.51μm to 19.55μm with.increasing th. amount of Mn_(3)O_(4) up to 0.50 mol%,wh.reas an increase in Mn_(3)O_(4) up to 0.75 mol%h.s caused th. average grain size to increase and th.n it decreases with.increasing Mn_(3)O_(4)from 0.75 mol%to 1.00 mol%.Th. sintered density h.s decreased from 5.38 g/cm3 to 5.31 g/cm3 with.increasing th. amount of Mn_(3)O_(4).Th. varistor ceramic modified with.0.50 mol%Mn_(3)O_(4) h.s exh.bited excellent nonlinear properties,with.16.29 for th. nonlinear coefficient and 441.9μA/cm2 for th. leakage current ***,th. sample doped with.0.50 mol%Mn_(3)O_(4) h.s been found to possess donor density as 0.77×10^(18) cm^(-3) and 0.916 eV barrier h.igh..

Novel CYP1B1 mutations and a possible prognostic use for surgical management of congenital glaucoma

AIM: To identify CYP1B1 gene mutations and evaluate th.ir possible role as a prognostic factor for success rates in th. surgical management of Egyptian congenital glaucoma ***: Totally 42 eyes of 29 primary congenital glaucoma patients were operated on with.combined trabeculotomy/trabeculectomy with.mitomycin-C and followed up at 1 d, 1 wk, 1, 6 and 12 mo postoperatively. Genomic DNA was extracted from periph.ral blood leukocytes. Coding regions of CYP1B1 gene were amplified using 13 pairs of primers, screened for mutations using single-strand conformation polymorph.sm followed by sequencing of both.strands. Efficacy of th. operation was graded as eith.r a success [maintaining intraocular pressure(IOP) less th.n 21 mm h. with.or with.ut antiglaucoma medication], or a failure(IOP more th.n 21 mm h. with.topical antiglaucoma medications). RESULTS: Seven novel mutations out of a total of 15 different mutations were found in th. CYP1B1 genes of 14 patients(48.2%). Th. presence of CYP1B1 gene mutations did not correlate with.th. failure of th. surgery(P=0.156, odds ratio=3.611, 95%CI, 0.56 to 22.89); wh.le th. positive consanguinity strongly correlated with.failure of th. initial procedure(P=0.016, odds ratio=11.25, 95%CI, 1.57 to 80.30). h.wever, th. Kaplan-Meier survival analysis revealed a significantly lower time of IOP control in th. subgroup with.mutations in CYP1B1 versus th. congenital primary glaucoma group with.ut mutations(log rank test, P=0.015).CONCLUSION: Seven new CYP1B1 mutations are identified in Egyptian patients. Patients h.rboring confirmed mutations suffered from early failure of th. initial surgery. CYP1B1 mutations could be considered as a prognostic factor for surgery in primary congenital glaucoma.

Palliative radioth.rapy(pRT) is primarily employed for palliation of bone pain in patients with.castrate-resistant prostate cancer(CRPC). h.wever, evidence th.t p RT influences prostate-specific antigen response in patients with.CRPC on systemic th.rapy is lacking. We describe th.ee cases of CRPC progressing after treatment with.docetaxel(n=2) and abiraterone(n=1), wh. responded unusually after p RT for bone pain with.th. development of a significant bioch.mical response and restoration of response to systemic th.rapy. Th. possibility of p RT influencing metastatic disease in CRPC h.s not been previously reported, and raises th. possibility of radiation-induced modulation of anti-tumor immune response mech.nisms th.t may play a role in th. restoration of response to systemic treatment.

Th. management of castrate-resistant prostate cancer progressing after maximum androgen blockade(MAB) h.s evolved in th. last decade with.th. development of several novel th.rapeutic options. h.wever, th. initial th.rapeutic strategy in th.se patients usually involves with.rawal of anti-androgen th.t can be associated with.bioch.mical response in approximately 20% of patients. Notably, we h.ve observed evidence of sustained bioch.mical response in two patients following secondand th.rd-line MAB using rech.llenge sch.dule of previously administered anti-androgen after latent interval. Th. possibility of response following sequential MAB using th. same anti-androgen agent h.s not yet been reported.
